1st West Africa FMD Roadmap Meeting • Togo • September 2016
FMD Socioeconomic or Economic Impacts
• No socio-economic impact assessment of FMD in Ghana has ever been done
1st West Africa FMD Roadmap Meeting • Togo • September 2016
Component 1:
FMD control plan
1. Vaccination plans (Ghana has adopted a no vaccination policy against FMD):
2. Plans related to FMD surveillance:- None so far
3. Cross-border activities – Important to bring for regional discussion: Border harmonization but none carried out
4. Other control measures (movement controls, biosecurity, biosafety, awareness campaigns):- with suspicion of FMD Outbreak usually there is restriction of movement out of affected area
1st West Africa FMD Roadmap Meeting • Togo • September 2016
Component 2:
Activities to strengthen the veterinary services
Briefly describe: OIE PVS and GAP analysis 2009
1. Improve governance of the FMD control programme
2. Implementation of an evaluation/monitoring system
3. Enhancement of the laboratory capacities (RESEPI/RESOLAB-AO for West Africa):- on-site bench trainings, FAO supported trainings
4. Other activities to improve governance of Veterinary Services (e.g. regional coordination)

Component 3:
Synergies to control other TADs
1. FMD-related activities that contribute to control other major TADs (e.g. PPR, CBPP) (movement control, vaccination, surveillance, farm biosecurity, training/workshops, etc.)
2. Strong veterinary services contribute to the control of other major diseases (Bench training on animal disease diagnosis.:-FAO , IAEA & USDA/APHIS)
3. Laboratory capability contributes to the control of other diseases:- FAO supported training on the use of molecular assays for the accurate diagnosis of FMD with the supply of diagnostic kits1 slide

indirectly to FMD control:- NONE
- Any research plan? NONE

Need to establish concretely the epidemiology of FMD in Ghana
• Full knowledge of the prevalence of the disease
• Circulating serotypes
• Stakeholders knowledge of the disease to improve reporting
Needs for support from development partners to address those gaps
• support to conduct nationwide active disease to establish the true prevalence
• Strengthening laboratory diagnostic capacity
• Training of field veterinary personnel on disease recognition and proper sampling for confirmation
Gaps and request for support
1st West Africa FMD Roadmap Meeting • Togo • September 2016
SummaryFive main FMD-related activities for FMD control in
GHANA
1. Comprehensive establishment of the epidemiology of FMD in Ghana:-• support for Epidemiology unit to conduct of nationwide active FMD
surveillance to establish true prevalence;• strengthening laboratory capacity to rapidly and accurately confirm
outbreaks and serotype virus as well as properly submit samples toreference centres for genotyping
2. Identify risk of FMD introduction in Ghana (livestock trade & transhumans) and develop appropriate control plan
3. Identify circulating FMD virus serotypes in the country and conduct vaccine marking studies in preparation for an extensive vaccination campaign
4. Implement an aggressive vaccination campaign along side other control measures (movement control, enforcement of quarantine policy,)
5. Assessment of the efficacy of vaccination campaiign and make necessary recommendations.
