Scott Peck January 2016 Labette Center calls for Nominations for the Sixth Annual Care and Compassion Awards Labette Center for Mental Health Services ( MHS) is asking for nominations for the sixth nual Care and Compassion Awards. The Care Compassion Awards recognize those in the Lab County community and LCMHS staff members routinely go above and beyond to show care compassion to others. “Nominees can be anyone in the Labette County community, including emp ees of LCMHS, who have gone above and beyond to show care and compas to others,” LCMHS Executive Director Matthew Atteberry said. “This pe does not necessarily have to be someone who volunteers for a lot of diffe things, but someone who is extraordinarily caring and routinely demonstr compassion towards others.” Community members and LCMHS staff may submit entries. All entries m have the name of the person being nominated, an address and if possib  phone number and/or an email address. It is also helpful to include the name  phone number for the person who is submitting the nomination, although not required. A detailed description of why the person is being nominated m also be included and should be at least 500 words in length. Labette Center calls for Nominations for the

Sixth Annual Care and Compassion Awards

Labette Center for Mental Health Services (MHS) is asking for nominations for the sixth

nual Care and Compassion Awards. The CareCompassion Awards recognize those in the LabCounty community and LCMHS staff members routinely go above and beyond to show care compassion to others.

Services, in partnership with the Kansas Foundation forMedical Care (KFMC,) will offer a free workshop series

or people living with diabetes as well as their caregivers.

The six-week workshop series helps people gain self-con-

dence in controlling their symptoms, better manage their

health and lead a fuller life.

The workshops are highly interactive and promote the de-

velopment of skills necessary to lead a healthy life with

diabetes. The workshop series is designed to complement

medical treatments and education provided by healthcare

providers. People living with diabetes and their caregiverswho attend the workshop series will receive a free copy of

he book, Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions.

Class will be starting in January. An informational meeting

held on January 12th at 2pm at Belmont Towers, 1900 Bel-

Upcoming Guiding Good Choices Class to Start

The next Guiding Good Choices class held at Labette Center will be beginning

in late January. This course is designed to help parents of children ages 9-14

learn how to strenthen family bonds, set a clear family position on drugs, teach

children skills they will need to make healthy choices, and increase children’t

involvement in the family. This is a ve week course and classes are held on

Monday evenings from 6pm - 8pm. Dinner is provided during the course. The

start date for this session will be determined through the month.

This curriculum for the Guiding Good Choices course was developed by Dr.David Hawkins and Dr, Richard Catalano to promote healthy behaviors in chil-

dren and reduce risks that predict adolescent health and behavior problems.

LCMHS Welcomes New My Family Labette Resource Specialist

Labette Center welcomes Kimber Martinez to our staff as

the new My Family Labette Resource Specialist! Kimber

 began working with the Center on January 5th, 2016. The

My Family Labette program is now in its third year and

continues to grow and expand, helping the youth in La-

 bette County.

This program was made possible through the use of grant funding, which

 been awarded by U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration

the support of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDH

This funding provides the Center monies to continue the My Family Lab

Program, which is a Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visi

(MIECHV) Program for families within Labette County.

The purpose of this program is to provide families a centralized process

will identify family’s needs and wants, and connect them to community

sources and services. “I am excited that LCMHS is able to be a part of a program that is only offere

three other counties in Kansas. Our My Family Resource Specialist will be able to outreach to families in

community so that they are more aware of the services available.” stated Misti Mustain, Director of Speci

Services at Labette Center for Mental Health. The My Family Program assists families with children b

to ve years of age, as well as women who are pregnant, to assure they have the education, skills, resour

and opportunities to succeed. This is a collaborative effort with Early Head Start, Healthy Families Ameri

and Parents as Teachers programs.

Kimber will be spending time seeing clients in both the ofce, in

the community and during visits to homes.
