    The 1st National Development Plan was in1953.

    A sum of $100 million was approved by theBrunei State Council for this purpose.

    Under the 1st National Development Planthe government made improvements invarious fields:

    Rebuilding the oil industry after theJapanese occupation.

    In 1955, the $14 million Gas Plant wascompleted. It was opened by Sultan OmarAli Saifuddien III.

    As early as 1954, survey and exploration

    work both land and offshore were carriedout by the Brunei Shell PetroleumCompany (BSPC). As a result, the Seriafield had increased in production in 1956.

    In 1954, Brunei set out written policy oneducation. The main aim was to ensureeducational facilities for primary and

    secondary, technical, vocational trainingand adult education.

    In 1956, Brunei Teacher Training College

    (BTTC) was set up.

    In 1958, Brunei English-medium teacherswere sent for training in Kota Bharu.

    More schools were built.

    In 1957, the Seria Government wasopened. And later renamed Anthony AbellCollege (AAC).

    In 1958, an English medium school for

    girls was set up in Brunei and known asSekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri(STPRI).

    Chinese schools were opened in BruneiTown and Seria.

    Technical education was first set up in1951 to train skilled workers for oil

    industry.

    The government of Brunei also gavescholarships to students to further studies

    in various institution oversea.

    In 1956, religious schools operating in theafternoon were established.

    Religious teachers were also recruited fromJohore.

    Scholarships were offered to students tocontinue their higher education such as Al-Junied Arabic school in Singapore, IslamicCollege Klang and Al-Azhar University inCairo.

    In 1958, road was built linking Belaitdistrict to Brunei Town.

    Shipping activities linked Brunei with other

    countries.M

    ain ports were Kuala Belait,the mouth of Tutong River and Brunei Bay.

    In September 1953, reconstruction onairfields at Berakas started. It was

    completed in 1954.

    In October 1953, Bruneis first nursingschool began at the hospital in Bruneitown.

    Increased in number of medical workers.

    Many of them had received their trainingoverseas particularly in Sarawak andMalaya.

    Improvements in public utilities such as

    water supplies and electricity. Thisprogress brought about improvements inthe living standards of the population.
