On 3 June the lst Mar~nes continued the attack from posi­tions in TA l222P, l422K, 1521D, and 1622N toward objective DOG with the 3dBn on the left, the 21.'!Bn on the rig1lt. Through­out the period from 3 June to 6 June the Regt attacked against a w-ell en trsna:l.ea, tenacipus enemy llilo employed heavy, accur­ate !li)rtar and art111ery fire from strong points located on the comrrt~LTlCI_ing ground~ !)!.1ring the nights the enemy continued probing attacks, but the .attacks were repulsed each time with heavy enemy casual ties. .After securing the ground from TA ll21J to TA 1421W the 2d and 3dBns held up, consolidating their ~osi tL·ns ancl dispatching patrols to the front and flanks. On 8 June at 0800K the 2dBn jumped off in the attack against SA, AW, and mortar fire. By 1300K the initial re­sistance wo.s broken and the 2dl3n 1 s front lines established on Hill 421 in TA 1423. The lstBn was re.uevea by -.ne ;:;u­Bn, 5th ROK Rect on position, and th~ moved to an assembly area in TA 122l.BCD S~"'ld TA l222WXY.

On the mortling of 9 June at 0630K aa the 2t!Bn was ~e.­paring to launch their attack, an intense and accurate mor•ar ana artillery barrue fell on their lines. This barrage was immediately followed by an enemy force estimated in excess of a reinforced company. Counter-battery, mortar, SA and AW fire drove off the attackers with devastatin' results.

As soon as the attaak was repulsed the 2dBn jumped. oif into the attack in conjunction with the lstBn. The enemy poured a 't.ritherins stream of SA and AW fire into the limited aven11es of approach. In addition, the enemy fired pre-registered concentrations of heavy morta:rs and artillery into the assa11ltinc forces.

Aircraft was requested repeatedly for support of the as­SQillt units during the morninc of 10 June, but it was not available due to weather oondt tiona. The fir-st aircraft to a:rrive was WI. OY which came on station at 1400K. This plane directed artillery missions on en!!IDY troops, artillery axtd mortar positions. Also,· it materially aided in reportinc to the assault unite observed troop concentrations. At l?OOK the first fighter aircraft QJ'rlVed on station. During the period from 1700~ until 2230K 15 fighter craft from the let MAW were used by the lst Marines. These planes deliver-iiid rockets, napalm, and strafing runs on enemy troop concentra­tions and ar-tillery s,.."ld mortar positions. Close air support, althou~h not available in the sufficient qllantity requested, mater1e_lly aided the a&s!lult units in takinr their objectives~

The excellently coordinated support of artillery, air, tanka, and eng:1neers enabled the infantry to close with the enemy. It was necessary to enrage in hand to hand combat in

A Nortn Korean Major and several junior officers were in­cluded in the 97 enemy dead counted on Hill 676, TA 1327R, lb.ioh was secured by the 2dBn at 2000K. It was estimated that an additional 110 en ewy were K!A and 200 were \'l!A. The 2dBn also took 19 POW's. The latBn secured Hill 700, TA l226M, at 2lOOK. They oounted 30 enem.y dead on the position and estimated an additional 50 enemy were KIA and 150 were W'IA.

anchors of the enemy's MLR. On 11 June at 0945K the 2dBn was engaf"ed in a f1refictlt within ita positions with enemy elements who had been bypassed. This enemy was coJJpletely destr-oyed.

On 13 June the 3dBn ae!!!aul ted Hill 787 1n T.A 1429D after an excellent air strike and artillery preparation. The enemy encountered here put up the same determined resistance as has been encountered previously. However, a lstBn patrol was in a poei t1on to view the rear of the enerey posi tiona and ob­served an estimated enemy compa)ly retreating to the north, '!'hey brought BA. The enerey again stayed in their emplacements until driven out by the assaulting troops, It was necessary to use bayonets and grenades close in to destroy the determined enemy. The 3ilBn sent out patrols from this p6int to Objective 3, TA 1328B. and Ob.lective 4. TA l430N. A friendly rocket ripple had been fired on Objective 4 with excellent results.

From the 14th to the close of the period the let Marines developed their pos1t1one along the NEW KA.WSAS Line by the use of barbed wire, anti-personnel mines, trip flares and booby traps. Bunkers and connectiRC trenched for front line positions and CP's were constructed. Strong combat patrols were dispatched daily. The efficiency of the 3dBn, particularly of the SAC staff, wa.e impaired due to these hestVY casualties.

At 09lOK a "bulldozer" assisting the 3dBn hit a mine in TA 1118 resulting in 5 WIA.
