At tlH: opening of this period, the batLalion, \vith other
elements of the 1st Harines ws.s in X Coros reserve bivouaced
in the HONGCHON area, in KOREA. The battalion, h:wing been
alerted for possible employment on short notice, continued its
training of re1placement personnel on a day to day basis until
11 September when it moved by motor to a forward assembly area
in the vicinity of DT 3140.
On 1?. September the b&.ttalion moved out by foot with the
mission of relieving elements of the let B~ttalion, 7th Marines
and f·lements of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines and proceeding
into the atteck phase. The relief of elements of 1/7 in the

of 12 Serytember wl th no incident other than heavy enemy "B 11 an(i

such relief •;as effected the battalion was directed to tie-in
Ni th elements of 2/7 for the remainder of the night ~md to
effect relief and pa8sage of lines of 2/7 on 13 September. On
13 Se·otember, in as much as all elements of 2/7 were not in

DT :?98462. The situation presented the following problem -that of strong· enemy resistance on key terraia separating known positions of elements of 2/l and reported :oosltlons of elements of 2/7, with forward movement of elements of 2/l being denied the full use of supporting arms ia view of the reported close proximity of elements of the tvo friendly battalions.
Elements of the battalion effected relief and passage of lines of Co "F" and nroceeded into the attack, This attack was resisted fiercely by a well emple .. ced and suoported enemy. The enEmy employed such tactics as taldng cover 1.:1 his prepared bunkers and calling down his o'm mortars on attacking elements when they came within range of hand to 'le.nc1 combe.t. After two attemuts and extremely .heavy cs.sualties, Co "E" secured hill 749 (DT 297456) and Co "D" vas pe.ssed through Hith the mission of attacking North along the rid.ge line from hill 749 to effect a link u;1 vii th friendly elements of 2/7 still reuorted to be in the vicinity of DT :?98462. The :orog·ress of Co "D" was slow and costly, however continued until la.te in the afternoon when elemen-" s of ?/? made contact 1vi th the le:rt rea.r of Co 11 D11 • It lo/E. s no•1 apparent that in fact no elements of 2/7 "'ere on the high ground in the vic1nlty of DT 298462, but had occu:oied ground in the vicinity of DT 295455, aporox:imately 400 yards to the South h'eRt of the crest of hill ?49. li'1th the situation, as it noH presented itself, clear, Co 11 D'1 was ordered to held and immediately steps were taken to effect defense for the nltht. Elements of 2/7 were subsequently relieved of responsibility in the sector en~ moved to the rear.
On 14 September, Co 11 F" was passed through Co 11 D11 la the continuatl.on of the: attack with the mission of securing the.t part of Division objective 11 BAKER 11 , DT 297462 to DT 304463. This etta ck Has sto )))ed apnroxima tely 200 yards short of the left flank of the objective by extremely heavy small arms and automatic weapons cross-flre supported by accurlltely placed mortar '"nd artillery fire takinr; advantage of the intricated and deceptive configuration of rugged mounta.inous terrain. A defensl ve perimeter i.Jas then established holoinc the. c;rouno. g:e.ined for the night.
On 15 Seutember, the attack was resumed late in the afternoon after extreme efforts were ma~e to neutralize the enemy rr:sistrmce by artillery and air, although. air wes 1n no senile adequate 1n nun, bcrs. This E,ttack lvGB again storned and the ba ttel1on Hi thdre,,.' to its oosl t1ons held the previous ni(':ht.

During the night of 15-16 Seutember, the battalion w' s countera.tta.cked by the 9lst NK regiment. The e.ttack lasted for a period of :3 hours and 55 minutes ancl. ~;as repulseci with great loss to the enemy. At no time Curing the counterattack \vas the integrity of the ba.ttalion 1 s perimeter defense endangered. Although the enemy attempted to encircle the left flank of the defense, his efforts >·Jere thwarted by the timely shifting of the 4.2 inch mortar barrage alloted the battalion.
On 16 September, elements of 1/1 executed a relief and uassage of lin~ of 2/1 and continued the attack securing the objective, The batte.lion now had the mission of provldinp: secur.1 ty for an e::tende,i man-pack supply route to elements of 1/l until 1640I, 19 September, when it reverted to Division ReBerve and vJithcirevl to an assembly area vicinity DT :3040,
