Khan Women's University has been striving to provide a haven to the women of Balochistan and Pakistan,

all those who are interested in educational and intellectual pursuits.

The official Key Handing Ceremony was held in the old Recreational Hall, the current Hanna Hall in the

University premises. Mr. Shafiqullah Khan, the DS Railways, presented the key of the property to the

Honourable Chancellor, Mr. Owais Ahmed Ghani and the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Shahida Jaffrey, in a

ceremony attended by prominent members of Quetta society, ministers, local government officers, and

Vice Chancellors of other universities of Balochistan.

While addressing the guests, Dr. Jaffrey made a few comments on the vision of the University:

“We will strive to impart education and knowledge of the highest standard. Our students will receive

modern education while preserving our Islamic and rich cultural, social, ethical and traditional values. We

will, Inshallah, produce educated women graduates from Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University,

Balochistan. This will be the premier institution of higher learning in Balochistan and, we hope, in

Pakistan. Real revolution in Balochistan society will come with women's education. This is the beginning

of that”.

Philosophy

SBKWU aims to provide the women of Balochistan and the rest of Pakistan with an excellent standard of

education and with the best skills suited to which ever station they choose in their lives, regardless of

creed, class, age, or domicile. SBKWU aspires to impart education that not only develops the mind of its

students; it also seeks to make its students socially responsible citizens. The University sincerely believes

that revolution begins from within the home and by educating women, it hopes to make the future of

Balochistan and Pakistan brighter.

Introduction

Since 1953, the Sardar Bahadur Khan Sanatorium on

Brewery Road had been providing shelter to the sick. On

March 18, 2004, the building witnessed a historic

transformation, when it was given the status of

Balochistan's first, and Pakistan's third, women's

university. From that day onwards, the Sardar Bahadur

Goals

! SBKW University will be the main source of skilled females in Balochistan and

towards this end the main goal of the university is to impart the best English medium

education possible to the females of Balochistan

! The university is also endeavoring to bring about a cultural revolution in the homes of

Balochistan by educating women of the province in their arts and culture

Story Behind the Logo

The need for a logo was felt as soon as Sardar Bahadur Khan

Women's University was established; however, it was decided to

take some time to think of a suitable logo that would suit the

University's vision.

Ms. Mehnaz Akbar Aziz, Country Director, Children's Resource International (CRI), was instrumental in

identifying, Akhtar Shah, who draws political cartoons for The News under the pseudonym of Shah Tune,

was contacted for some ideas about the design. After extensive research, he came up with a logo which

was approved by the Vice Chancellor--following several consultations, and the Chancellor.

The logo includes the two colors of life and vitality, green and blue. Blue is also the color of water which

has been used as a motif of the imagination by several Romantics. Apart from its symbolic significance,

the logo also breaks away from the traditional mould used by the majority of universities by adopting more

modern lines and lettering. These are symbolic of the University's outlook as well since it strives to

introduce innovative teaching methodologies and academic programs which will not only make it an

outstanding institution but will also produce individual and competent students.

“I feel that Balochistan is a province, a society, which is in transition. It has a

very strong tribal…history and background… but over the past…twenty,

twenty-five years I think a process of transition, of change, has been taking

place in the entire area and, more so, in Balochistan. The trigger that started

this change was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan which totally destabilized

the entire area…. [As a result of the war] the people of Afghanistan and

Balochistan realized that…there is a big world out there so there was a major

exposure of this society to the entire world.

That was the trigger that started this process of

change….. I personally saw the change in the

Frontier…. In a period of twenty years the

Frontier has totally changed…. We have

now…transitioned from a tribal culture and

society to a more cosmopolitan culture. At the

same time there is emphasis on preserving and

retaining what is good in our society: the

moral values, the social values that we have.

“Since the past eleven months I have been observing Balochistan. The change is here as well but it is

lagging; it is slow and we need to expedite that change. It can only be done through education. We have

to change the mindset, the thinking. What better way of doing it than bringing change inside the homes

of the people and that change can only come from the education of the girls and women. That's why there

was such an emphasis on an institute for higher education for women at Quetta, where we think the

process will…expedite…. Our mothers, our daughters, our sisters all exercise a certain influence, and, if

we are able to put educated women in every household, we will change the society.

“We want modern knowledge…at the same time we want that we should retain our very strong family

system, our social values, and moral values…. We must retain our identity that is our Islamic identity.

The challenge before us is how to strike his great balance…between knowledge and retaining what is

good in our society. We have seen other education systems in Pakistan which, in their pursuit of modern

knowledge, have thrown their own culture out of the window with the result that they are neither fully

here. This is something I want all of you to be very conscious about. Try and understand what the

challenge is; what it means to us. It will depend on each one of you. What you will do when you go back

to your homes, your family, how you will shape that family. In whatever form you shape your family that

will be Pakistan; that will be Balochistan. That is your importance in society.

“If anyone wants to follow a career, she's welcome, she should if she wants to, but education itself is not

meant for you to take up jobs and earn money. That is one small aspect. The major thing is basically to

shape you, to provide you with the right ideas so wherever you are, you can shape…that environment in

the right way.”

Message of the Vice Chancellor for the first News letter of the University, September 2004

The need for a Women's University was felt for several years by the people of

Balochistan, it materialized with the coming of Mr. Owais Ahmed Ghani as

Governor Balochistan. The fate of the land and buildings of the old Sardar

Bahadur Khan Tuberculoses Sanatorium, the property of Pakistan Railways was

being decided, as the hospital was non functional. As luck would have it, the

Prime Minister of Pakistan too was from Balochistan, Mir Zafrullah Khan

Jamali. A decision was taken that the Sanatorium spread over 39 acres of land,

with scores of room, wards and bungalows will become the Women's University

of Balochistan. Since the land and buildings were a gift from the Pakistan Railways for the Women's

University, it was decided to retain the name Sardar Bahadur Khan to continue to honour Sardar

Bahadur Khan who was the Agent to the Governor General of Pakistan as well as the Minister for

Pakistan Railways.

The SBK Women's University was incorporated with the University Ordinance approved on March 10,

2004, the Vice Chancellor's appointment orders issued on March 11, 04. Work began earnestly from one

room on campus with a borrowed work table, a few chairs and a borrowed phone line that rarely worked.

Support was provided by the University of Balochistan and the Chancellor's/Governor's Secretariat.

Transport too was rented. In a record time of 59 days, classes were created out of the long Sanatorium

wards, partitioned, painted and repaired; furniture made for class rooms, faculty rooms and staff rooms.

Faculty was recruited for the subjects offered, and students administered aptitude tests, and classes

initiated. Library too was established, with books, furniture and staff recruited. There was no water as

the old tube wells had dried up due to falling ground water levels, and hundreds of pine trees dried and

were dying. Electric power was erratic; it would go away in the morning and back in the evening. A

small diesel generator was purchased and connected to one computer that was used for University paper

work.

We had our teething problems -- had to recon with the neighborhood that resisted the construction of the

boundary wall, as over the years the roads of the hospital were used as thoroughfares for the people that

settled in the kachi abadis bordering the sanatorium lands. The University had to give away 5 feet of

land on two sides to provide a narrow road for the kachi abadi residents.

All that is history now and I look back at the great challenge provided to me by the honourable

Chancellor/Governor. A very strong foundation has been laid for a class educational institution of

higher learning in Balochistan. The pioneering class that numbered 137 young women is confident and

bubbling with positive energy. There are hundreds more who will pass through this institution and will

be the future mothers and raise children who will make Balochistan and Pakistan proud. That will bring

about a positive revolution in the country.

Page 11: 1st Convocation report

In Conclusion, I would like to mention a few names of people who made my task easy: Prof. Jamila

Qazi, the Registrar; Ms. Sarah Hameed, PSO to VC; Mohammad Akbar, Deputy Director Technical;

Naveedullah Khan, Deputy Director Finance and Javed Ashraf, Deputy Registrar. I would like to thank

all and everyone involved with the Women's University, each had a role to play, and if we continue this

way, our dream will come true the SBK Women's University will be there to stay as a quality institution

of higher learning in Balochistan.

University Quetta (SBKWU) is holding its first Convocation on 18 July

2006.

It is a matter of great pleasure and satisfaction that within a record time of

little more than two years SBKWU has not only become a leading institution

of higher education for women in Balochistan but also succeeded in holding stits 1 Convocation which, indeed, is a remarkable achievement. I am also

happy to note that this University is marching ahead successfully towards its

prime goal i.e. "Placing an educated lady in every house of Balochistan" which, I am confident, would

bring a revolution from within the society. I extend my heartiest felicitations to Madam Vice Chancellor,

Dr. Shahida Jaffrey, her dedicated team, learned faculty and hardworking students on their marvelous stachievements. I also congratulate them on the occasion of 1 Convocation of their University. I hope that

they would continue to work with same missionary zeal for further progress and development of this

institution in order to make it one of the best institutions of higher learning in the country. I wish them all

success in their noble endeavors.

Message from Mr. Abdul Wahid Siddiqui, provincial Minister for Education

Convocation is the most cherished and adorable event in the life of a student. st

It is really heartening that SBKWU is holding its 1 Academic Convocation

on its campus. On this auspicious day, I congratulate the graduates and their

families for their dedications, diligence and devotion to improve their

knowledge and skills.

I hope that the university will keep striving for new avenues to create a

tolerant, enlightened, progressive and dynamic society in Pakistan. I

congratulate the academicians, staff and graduates and pray for their

bright future.

Message from Mr. K. B. Rind, Chief Secretary, Balochistan

The history of development, across the globe, amply, demonstrates that

education is the key condition for economic, social and political

development. Education is the liberating force which gives freedom to

human beings from the tyranny of ignorance, poverty and

disempowerment. Review of successful initiatives at human and social

development in developing countries, establishes a direct relationship

between female education and efforts at improving delivery of education

and primary health care services and poverty alleviation at household

level.

The Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University is indeed one such endeavor of the present government

to provide an excellent facility to the women from Balochistan to acquire professional expertise in

social and natural sciences and prepare them to play an active role in economic and social development

of Balochistan.

Convocation is a critical juncture in the life of an institution and students. It is the stage for the

institution to offer its labour of love to the nation occasion both for the SBKWU and the graduating

students and need to be celebrated meritoriously. I would like to extend my hearty congratulations to the

SBKWU for realizing a dream into reality and the students for the award of deserved degrees.

Speech of the Honourable Chancellor on the First Academic Convocation, 18 July 2006

Madam Vice Chancellor, very proud parents,

distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen

Aslam-o-Alaikum.

It is a big project. It is very rare that in your own

periods of excitement you are able to achieve success.

I remember about two years back I told Dr. Atta we

need a women's university at Quetta, he said I will help

you. I started looking for a building. I came to this

place, it was dirty and disarrayed. Today it is full of

life; to me it is of immense personal satisfaction. I went back and asked my Principal Secretary to work

on it. The Vice Chancellor was to be a lady Ph.D from; Balochistan-- a difficult task. It was destined for

the university to come. Knowing we had no funds and building belonged to the Railways. I spoke to the

Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali, an angel in disguise -- I asked him that Balochistan needs your help

and we want to start the university quickly. He came, and walked here and said this premises is for the

university and here is a cheque of 5 crore rupees. In March 2004 the V.C returned to Quetta from USA. I

asked the V.C, I don't know how you will do it, but I want the first session to start in this session. In

exactly 59 days, the university began classes with over a hundred students.

I pay tribute to the people of Balochistan. The VC University of Balochistan helped us to begin a flying

start. Today, we have 800 students, 770 from Balochistan and 30 from outside Balochistan which shows

that the university's reputation is crossing the borders of Balochistan. Soon it will be a premier

institution of Balochistan. We started with a small team and I told them to have a vision of what you want

to do. Vision was worked out -- to place an educated and cultured lady in every house of Balochistan. I

am glad to see, as I come here often, that today I can see a world of change that is taking place.

I wish to say something to the students:

1400 years ago, in the battle field of Badar, 313 people decided to stand up for their principles and were

faced by overwhelming enemy. Logically, they should have withdrawn, but they fought. A revolution

was born that day and still continues. Those 313 were Badaries and you are also Badaries. This

institution will bring revolution in Balochistan; we have prepared you for that, but it is you who have to

standup for the change. Do not let that deter you. I am glad to know that some of you joined the faculty

and have become a part of struggle that continues here and others will go back to their homes and some

to professional lives, but they will make difference in the thinking of the society.

Behind every successful man there is a strong woman. People of Balochistan support this institution and

allow the university to grow. Knowledge is power, power creates change. All nations today compete on

the basis of human resources. We want to make the people of Balochistan dynamic and successful.

Page 25: 1st Convocation report

21SBKWU

I pray for you to see your way through life. It is a day for thanksgiving, I express my gratitude to all

those who have established the university--Mir Zafarullah Jamali, the Vice Chancellor and Registrar

for their commitment --they are courageous and committed ladies; Shoaib Mir -- instrumental to

make the system move, worked on the Charter of the university and managed the affairs of the

university; faculty both regular and visiting, who made it possible; they worked in unfavorable

conditions (on contract) and made it possible. People; who opposed the university have made us

strong, the graduating students, parents and families of graduating students. Thank you all.

Speech of Mr. Zafarullah Jamali, former Prime Minister of Pakistan

Honourable Chancellor, Respected Vice Chancellor,

guests, parents and students. SBKWU has a short

history. Sardar Bahadur Khan was Minister for

Railways in the then Central Cabinet of Pakistan;

therefore, this institution was named after him as

Sardar Bahadur Khan Sanatorium. He also remained

the Agent to the Governor General in Balochistan and

the leader of the opposition in 1970.

The Governor Balochistan requested for a Women's

University for Balochistan, Balochistan is my home, I was born here, I was brought up here and I was

educated here. The area of the sanatorium was picturesque a picnic spot for young boys of Quetta Today

we see a world of change. I came here on a snowy day two years ago; I asked Mr. Mehar, Minister for

Railways to come along and ordered him to handover the building of 1 billion and 63 crores to Governor

Balochistan, and gave a cheque of 5 crore rupees to the Governor Balochistan for the Women's

University. I appreciated the hard work and that's how we started.

I was forced by the Vice Chancellor and the Chancellor to attend this Convocation. I felt it my duty. The

governor started several educational institutions of higher education besides this university the IT

University, and Lasbella University of Agriculture and Marine Sciences at Lasbella, as well as a few

Cadet Colleges are also coming.

Today is a very special day. The establishment of the SBKW University was a required need of

Balochistan. Dear graduates respect time and time will respect you. My advice to graduating students:

education begins at home, actual education depends upon the parents. I always challenge other

provinces that people of Balochistan are most awakened, but they have never been given the

opportunity. I thank the Governor for his efforts for the establishment and the continued support to the

university. My sincere congratulations to all graduates, and appreciation and respect to parents and

faculty. The Best of luck to you. I am grateful to the Governor and the Vice Chancellor once again.

Convocation Address by the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Shahida Jaffrey

Honourable Chancellor, Mr. Owais Ahmed Ghani,

Honourable Mir Zafrullah Jamali, former Prime

Minister of Pakistan, Honourable Ministers,

honourable Vice Chancellors, Guests, parents, faculty

and graduates.

Aslam-o-Alaikum

It was in January 2004, while I was vacationing with

my daughter in California, that I received a telephone

call from the Honourable Chancellor's Office, his

Principal Secretary spoke to me, mentioning that a women's university has been established at Quetta

and the Chancellor was looking for a Vice Chancellor. The next evening, there was a call again from

Pakistan; the operator said that Governor Balochistan will speak to you. I was amazed the Governor

calling me!! I was the CEO of the Balochistan Rural Support Programme and was astonished that the

Governor was calling me in California. The Governor Sahib was very kind and gracious and had high

expectations of the university for women that was to be created. He had his own vision and high hopes --

how classes will be, what will be taught and the funds available. He mentioned that Prime Minister Mir

Zafrullah Jamali has approved the establishment of the Women's University at Quetta, has visited the

site that will be the Women's University, which is an old TB Sanatorium with hundred of pine trees,

located on a hill overlooking Quetta valley, belonging to the Pakistan Railways. Funds have been

provided by the Prime Minister, by the Provincial government and there is money available from the

Governor's special funds. I accepted, and was grateful to him for his call and for his confidence in me.

I couldn't sleep that night.

It was a challenge. On arrival in Pakistan, I met with the Chancellor; the University Act was being

incorporated, based on the Model University Ordinance. I was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of

the Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University on March 15, 2004. I found an outstanding woman from

the education sector in Balochistan, Prof. Jamila Qazi, who accepted the position of the Registrar; and a

young woman Sarah Hameed who had graduated from Oxford University. I also took staff from the

BRSP. We began work with just 6 persons.

We worked days and nights and were able to recruit new faculty and began classes in a record period of

59 days. One entire block of the neglected TB Sanatorium was cleaned up, repaired and painted and

with borrowed furniture, received students in classes on May 10, 2004.

130 young women armed with BA/B.Sc degrees sat the entrance tests and enrolled. The Chancellor had

wanted that all young women seeking admission should be enrolled. We did just that. Students were in

possession of bachelor's degrees, but some were weak academically. We began teaching using the

interactive teaching methodology, and used the semester system.

Page 27: 1st Convocation report

23SBKWU

Studies were tough and several dropped out, going to institutions where studies were easier. The hardy

ones continued and are now getting their Masters in Arts and Masters of Sciences Degrees. It was very

demanding for all of them for the teachers as well as the students. Faculty development has been the

university's number one priority. Faculty members are constantly receiving training and learning new

teaching methodologies. Students too have worked very hard I am sure all parents and family members

can vouch for that!!

Since the university is located far out of town the most pressing need was transport for student's pick

and drop. We rented commercial buses and began the bus service till the university buses arrived a few

months later. An old doctor's cottage was cleaned and set up as a hostel that accommodated 10 students

and two faculty members.

History is created today, 75 young women that constituted the pioneering class of the Women's

University are receiving their degrees in Masters of Arts in English Literature, Economics, Sociology,

Pakistan Studies, and Masters of Sciences in Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Chemistry. The science

students have completed their entire practical and research. That has been the reason for the delay in

holding the convocation. Because of the kind of education provided to them during the past two years,

graduates are sought after in the local job market. We have recruited ten of our own students as faculty

and in the administration, recruitments made purely on merit. All of us worked very hard and the small

beginnings are now recognized as a success story.

The University has begun a four year BS Honors programmes in Computer Sciences, Botany, Zoology

and Chemistry. Masters Degrees in Social work, Urdu, Education, and Fine Arts have also been

introduced. We have a Finishing School and a Gem and Gemological Institute. 10 of the faculty are

enrolled in M.Phil and PhD programmes. Inshallah we will have our own PhD Faculty in a few years.

The HEC has supported the computerization of the university with LAN and WAN, PERN connectivity

and digital Library. This will enable students and faculty to access world knowledge through the

computers.

This shows the University is growing and going ahead with confidence.

I must thank the Government of Pakistan, the Government of Balochistan and the Governor for their

generosity -- we were never short of funds, which we used extremely cautiously, and provided all

facilities required for quality education to students. The library, museums and the laboratories are fully

equipped with the latest and modern instruments. We have good hostels and cafeterias. Classrooms have

all required furnishings and audio visual aids. The premises that we have received was purpose built for

a sanatorium, with long wards for long confinements of tuberculosis patients. These have been

partitioned and converted into classrooms, laboratories, museums, library and staff rooms. We have

now run short of space. You will observe that university premises have undergone transformation -- the

old unused sanatorium is a garden now, which serves as a haven and sanctuary for students, providing

them healthy learning environment. The people of Quetta will like this campus.

Page 28: 1st Convocation report

24 SBKWU

I have to thank many people today who have contributed to the success of the university. First and

foremost the honourable Chancellor, as someone remarked the other day the Chancellor IS the

Women's University. I could not have done what all I have done without the support of the Chancellor.

To Mir Zafrullah Jamali, the Prime Minister when the Women's University's idea was born, for his

support. His presence here today is indicative of his interest in the education of the young women of

Balochistan. It is the seed that he had sown two and a half years ago that is bearing fruit today.

Principal Secretary to Governor Balochistan he has always been there for us at the university and all

those at his secretariat.

I am grateful to Justice Rasheed the Vice Chancellor, University of Balochistan and all of his staff. We

borrowed student chairs and computers from the University of Balochistan. Initially for the first few

days all faculty members came from the University of Balochistan, and then the Vice Chancellor

allowed senior faculty to come visiting on a regular basis. I am thankful to the present Vice Chancellor

who continues to support us.

I am proud to see my family and grand children here to share this happy occasion with the people of

Balochistan.

I would like to thank the people of Quetta and Balochistan who allowed me to run the university the way

I want and have stood by me; the good parents who had faith in me and the university and have sent their

daughters, sisters and wives to receive education and allowed them to live in the university hostels. The

university has current enrollment of 800 and 70 live in the hostels.

I have to pay tributes to the hard work put in by all faculty, staff and the students of the university, I

couldn't have done it all by myself.

The establishment of the first women's university has created history in Balochistan. The university has

influenced the lives of young women of Balochistan, and thereby will create a silent revolution by

putting an educated and enlightened woman in every home who will raise educated and enlightened

children--that is what real development is.

I thank you all for being here today.

The Valedictorian's Speech

Honorable Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Faculty,

distinguished guests, parents and dear friends

Aslam-o- Alaikum

I feel both privileged and proud to be standing here as

a Valedictorian of the pioneering batch of the Sardar

Bahadur Khan Women's University. It is a great

historical moment for all of us, a moment of immense

joy and pride. The University has produced its first

batch of graduates. I am grateful that you could all be here today to share in our celebrations. Together

we have had quite a wonderful journey, as it is said that journey is best measured in achievements rather

than in miles. The first phase of this amazing journey, which began in 2004 by a small group of people

against all odds is successfully completed today. In this short span of two and half years the university

has come a long way. It was on 29th of April 2004 that I began my personal journey with apprehensions

and expectations, when I came here for the entrance test. Like the multitude I was also not satisfied with

prevalent system of education and wished to get equipped with the latest trends. Then I was oblivious of

the fact that the university would open its doors of opportunities for me, plethora of them came my way.

The university provided me with opportunity of speaking on different forums, regional, national and

international. The university enabled me to improve my skills of succeeding in spite of obstacles. It was

here during the course of my education that I learned how to do things by the books, but I also learned

that we can forget the book, that I can write my own book, write my own rules, my own choice and my

own life. The university gave me the sense of being complete and accomplished in the true sense of the

word.

As you know the progress of a nation depends on an equal participation on the part of both men and

women in every field of life, and for that we need to empower women. Dear friends, movement for

women's empowerment does not call for their dominance over men. It seeks for them the same access as

men have to employment, political participation and representation, economic opportunities, directive

roles in society and rights under law. Empowerment means giving person the capability to improve their

lives and environment in which they live. And when they begin to feel they can hold authority, influence

others and operate in the leadership roles on the same terms as men, then they have become empowered;

knowledge is essential in sensible decision making in all areas of endeavor meaning that women's equal

access to education in all disciplines and at all levels. It is prerequisite of their empowerment. Self

reliance, initiative, ambition, exceptional native ability and fortunate coincidences may enable a

specific woman to attain spectacular success in her chosen domain. Ladies and gentlemen a woman

cannot attain equality with man if they are ignorant. Awareness of self worth on the part of women is

Page 30: 1st Convocation report

26 SBKWU

precondition of their empowerment. Here at the university we were not only shown our self worth but

also have been empowered to meet the challenges of this complex world with courage and

determination.

On a more personal note, I have special thanks for my teacher Prof. Jamshed Ahmad who taught me to

live not lead life. My friends for being there for me and last but not the least my family specially my

father who gave me the confidence, courage and strength to stand against the tide. Who told me I could

do anything I want. Had it not been for him I would not have been standing here today; for my fellow

graduates before we leave to celebrate and map out the rest of our lives, remember, success is not

measured by how well you fulfill the expectations of others, but how you honestly live up to your own

expectations. Success is not a place at which one arrives, but rather the spirit with which one undertakes

and continues the journey.

I would like to end my speech with a poem for my fellow graduates.

Look at yourself as you stand among winners, see yourself as one belonging

to an elite group of individuals

And know that you have accomplished a great success in life

You have taken a dream, added a splash of determination and created the

reality which you hold in your hands today

And as you stand among the future of our world in that Heeling

moment, take time to reflect on the past; on obstacles you've had to overcome

On mistakes you may have made, and be sure that there are no obstacles you

cant over throw, and mistakes can be rectified

So as you end a chapter in your journal of life and embark out into an

unchartered sea, you will tread the uncertain waters with caution, knowledge

and respect

You have the courage to look deep with in and make the changes you know

you can

The knowledge not to disturb the good that is already there, and the self respect to be the best that you can

be.

With these thoughts fellow graduates, let us travel forward. This is the end of a very significant phase in

our life and the beginning of the next most important phase.

I wish you all the success and happiness in the world.

The Story of the Convocation Gowns and Head Gear

The date for the first convocation of the SBKWU was to be decided - the academic work and tests for

most departments were complete by March 2006, but practical work of Chemistry and other Science

departments were continuing due to the late establishment of laboratories. The final date for the First

Convocation was decided and approved by the honourable Chancellor for July 18, 2006.

A ton of work was required for making arrangements. The creation of

degrees, folders for the degrees; the design of the gowns and the head gear

etc.; designing and printing invitation cards; who was to be invited --

preparing the guest lists, and inviting the guests of honour.

As this was the First Convocation, quality of work and standards and styles

of gowns were to be established. It was decided that everything will be local

with ethnic Balochistani touch.

I called Naheed Azfar and consulted with her as she is a designer and had

designed the very popular PIA uniforms. Her suggestions were "the gown

should be designed along local styles with hand embroidery on the front and

sleeves, and Balochi topis as head gear". We had only two months to the

Convocation. If there was no time for hand embroidery, get machine embroidery Balochi style. Fabric

should be wash and wear cotton using university logo colours. Gul Ahmed textile manufacturers and

suppliers were contacted in Karachi - they did not have fabrics in the colours that we required.

We were narrowing in on the colours of the gowns - blue and green. The first attempt at creating the

gowns was using wash and wear cotton fabric in light blue, light green and mauve - three different styles

were created, based on the design of the Balochi chola, with similar colour hand embroidery panels

down the front.

For the head gear the first attempt was to use the Balochi hand mirror embroidered man's cap. A large

local tassel was attached to it, and a white dupatta attached to the right side as worn by the stewardesses

of Emirate Airlines.

Numerous designs and styles of graduation gowns were downloaded from the net, both used by

universities in Pakistan and abroad, to draw inspiration from.

The first creations were shown to the honourable Chancellor. He selected one style of embroidery, but

had no comments on the style of the gowns and the Balochi cap.

After numerous trips to the Quetta market and seeking availability of fabric in large quantities for the

manufacture of 170 gowns, the final colour and the kind of fabric to be used was decided after

consultations with Mrs. Ghazala Owais Ghani. The colour for students was navy blue, beautiful maroon

for faculty and golden for the VIPs. All gowns were to have 2 and a half inch hand embroidery panels in

Embroidery panelscollected

Page 36: 1st Convocation report

32 SBKWU

three colours down the front and on the wide sleeves. The VIP gowns were to have embroidery all

around the hem of the gown, with additional three stripes in the center of the sleeves.

The head gear was still a challenge. The head gear of the Aga Khan University is designed like a turban,

Hamdard University and several other universities use the same design - the

latest was the Karakoram University in Gilgit. Usually the graduation cap is

shaped like a book with a tassel hanging on one side. Using the Balochi cap

on women in Balochistan - we were aware of the sensitivities of the people,

as women in Balochistan do not wear caps. When taking reactions from

different people a senior professor remarked "when the graduate will return

home her brother will ask her - you went from home wearing a dupatta and

have returned from the university wearing a man's cap!!" So that was the last

time a Balochi cap was considered and it was put away.

A decision was taken to do dupattas PIA style, having the same hand mirror

embroidery panels on them. Dupatta fabric was to be chosen both for

students and faculty.

The university is not only for Balochi women. All local and national ethnic groups are representative.

So it was important to create the convocation garments as acceptable to all and should be neutral in

style.

After the final selection of the colours and fabrics, orders for embroidery

were to be given. Fazal Khan who has a shop on Jinnah Road was contacted;

he was unable to produce, through his workers the 900 yards of hand

embroidery in 20 days. Tahir Malik at the BRSP was contacted - who

designed the panel and chose the colours of thread and marked them and had

the first sample created overnight by a mother and two daughters artisans

team who were at the BRSP having come from Bhag, who was able to

produce a sample one yard long in 5 hours. Small samples were distributed

amongst different groups of artisans all over Quetta, through the APWA,

Small Industries and other groups that did embroidery.

White cotton four inches wide panels were given along with threads and mirrors -completed panels

began arriving within a few days. Fabric for the final gown was decided as good quality velvet available

locally, in navy blue, maroon and gold. Orders for velvet were placed through local suppliers, and

Rehman, the Jamali family tailor, was told to stitch the gowns patterned after the design of the gown

worn by the graduates of the BUIT University. Rehman initially refused to stitch the gowns as there was

not enough time - one month to stitch 170 gowns, with continuous electric breakdowns in Quetta -- but

then agreed. He closed his shop and assigned all of his workers on stitching the gowns - saying that he

stitch 4 sets of shalwar kamizes in the time required in stitching one velvet gown. We agreed to pay him

accordingly.

Dupattas were to be made - I stitched one, but the cut of the

dupatta was not right. Then a dupatta was borrowed from a

lady of PIA ground staff, and design copied. Fabric and

colour of the dupattas was to be decided. Light blue colour

was selected for the students, dupatta of georgette

material, and beige for the faculty. The Treasurer

department made the bulk purchases of all fabrics and

negotiated the rates.

Rehman tailor did the dupattas and also stitched embroidered panels to them.

Lining was also attached under the embroideries.

Four VIP gowns were created using good quality beautiful golden velvet with

maroon and gold embroidery panels. More embroidered panels were required

for the hem of the gowns and the three stripes on the sleeves. The dupattas for

the VC and the Registrar were of different georgette, but were beige in colour.

Badges having university logo were ordered and made in Karachi, each

student, faculty, VC and the registrar wore them over their dupattas on the left

side.

All money spent on the gowns, dupattas, embroidery and

stitching went to the local artisans, fabric stores and the

tailor. The money for the badges was the only item ordered

from outside Balochistan.

The total cost of each gown and dupatta inclusive of

everything came to Rs. 2500/-

VIP gown cost Rs. 5000/-

The logo badges cost Rs. 300/-

The end result was magnificent. Each set of gown, dupatta and a badge were

rented to students at Rs. 500 each, and to the faculty at Rs. 100 each, and are

the property of the university, to be used for later convocations. The numbers

will be increased with the increasing numbers of graduating students. There

will be different colors for B.Sc Honours, M. Phil and PhD graduates - but the

style will remain the same.

The entire composition was through the efforts of the Vice Chancellor!!

Botany Department(By Huma Batool, Lecturer Botany Dept)

I still remember his words: it was April 2004, when I asked my cousin to

go to the newly established SBK Women's University and bring me the

application form, because I wanted to apply for the post of Lecturer.

When he came back he said “what kind of a university is this that does

not have any pen or paper”. Despite that I dispatched an

application with my CV and after a rigorous selection

procedure I was appointed as a lecturer of Botany on May 6,

2004, of course after a very tough written test and an interview

before a high level selection panel.

On May 10, 2004 I conducted my first class in the university;

there were very few students; student chairs were borrowed

from the University of Balochistan. There was no table or

chair for the teacher. The long wards of TB Sanatorium were

partitioned and converted into longish classrooms. Only a

white board and a marker was provided to me and an old

ceiling fan moving very slowly not bothering to give any air.

I could not envision that a great transformation will quickly occur in this institution. Now, I feel proud to

be part of history that has been created at the SBKWU, in just two years we have developed

tremendously.

Currently, the Botany department is equipped with laboratories, one museum and two classrooms. The

museum is very well stocked and has a collection of over three hundred preserved wild, local and non

local plants and over a hundred preserved specimens of fossils of rocks and plants from all over

Pakistan.

The laboratories are also well equipped and more instruments will be purchased for higher research

purposes.

Currently there is a demonstration plot on campus, where 7500 gladioli bulbs have been planted and are

flowering. Flowers will be sold at the forthcoming Convocation and in the flower market.

Arrangements will be made to sell the blooms in other parts of the country.

This demonstration will further be expanded and the Botany Department will establish a Horticultural

Society that will propagate ornamental plants and flowers for commercial purposes.

teaching, students are provided field visits and research

trips. They have visited different institutions such as the

Agriculture Research Institute, Arid Zone Research

Institute, CASVAB and EPA (Environmental Protection

Agency) Quetta.

The university has provided opportunities to faculty for

further enhancement of their teaching skills and faculty of the department has attended numerous

training events, workshops, seminars and conferences all over Pakistan. In 2004 and 2005 Children's

Resources International (CRI) organized training and workshops at the Allama Iqbal Open University,

Islamabad. Faculty also attended a three month training program at Islamabad in March 2005. Other

training events were: All Pakistan Botanical Society Conference at Sindh University, Jamshoro in

January 2006, and in July 2006 a workshop at Karachi University (Ecology).

The department conducts workshops and recently organized a four day workshop on flower

arrangement and floral wear competition. Students and teachers also participated in different events at

the university: candle making workshop, debates, poster competition etc.

We have come a long way, now the students and teachers are actively involved in research as there are

laboratories and museums -- Botany department has plans to do research to create new knowledge.

Chemistry Department

The journey of Chemistry department started in 2004 with

the establishment of the university with only four regular

lecturers and one visiting faculty member for 16 students.

Currently the department has 13 lecturers with 2 visiting

senior faculty members. About 150 students are enrolled in

BS (Chemistry) and M.Sc. programme in a separate block

named as “JUNIPER BLOCK”.

Dr. Ata-r-Rehman performed the inauguration of the Chemistry Department Laboratories in 2005.

\Besides the regular teaching methods, students are also taught by using different visual aids: the

overhead projector, multimedia, models, charts etc.

Establishment of the Women's university is a

landmark in the history of Balochistan. The

university was established to provide higher

education to the women of Balochistan; to educate

one woman is actually educating the entire family and

in turn the entire generation.

Like the crest of a peacock so is Mathematics at the

head of all knowledge. The Department began

functioning with its first batch of six students and one

regular faculty member in May, 2004. Gradually, the number of students and faculty increased. Senior

faculty comes on visiting basis from the University of Balochistan.

Modern teaching methodologies are used; the interactive method. Students are evaluated through

regular quizzes, presentations, tests and assignments. Students are taken to different places and

institutions to learn and explore the application of their knowledge; recently they went on a visit to the

Metrological Department Quetta.

There is no doubt that the students that have graduated and awarded with Masters degrees are indeed

Masters in their own right. The SBK Women's University has recently recruited two of its graduates as

faculty, they were amongst the best out of all those who applied for the positions!!

Zoology Department

Education is the key to individual opportunity, the strength of our economy, and the vitality of our

democracy. Two years ago a Women University mushroomed in the heart of Quetta valley, and was

named Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University. The department began in a single room with only 13

students and four lecturers and one assistant professor who came on visiting basis. There were no

laboratories, neither a library

For the last two years, Zoology department has made progress by leaps and bounds and now it is very

well established. Two new large halls have been constructed next to the long halls allotted to the

Zoology Department as additional space for laboratories, classrooms and staff rooms.

The University invited Mr. Sayed-ul-Haq, Assistant professor of Genetics from the department of

Biological Sciences at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. He provided practical training on the

fundamentals of Genetics to all students and faculty of Zoology Department. Faculty of Botany Dept

also attended. And a few faculty members of Govt. Girls College Jinnah Town also attended.

It is heartening -- eight out of the nine regular lecturers of the university are enrolled in PhD and M.Phil

programs.

The university stresses faculty development. Faculty

members are sent to different work shops, symposia

and seminars all over the country. Some of the

training attended by faculty are:

• Techniques in biotechnology held at the UoB

• Project Cycle Management held in Karachi

• Faculty Development Programme held in

Islamabad

• Early Childhood Education held in Islamabad

• Training of Molecular Biology (CAMP) Lahore

• Basic techniques in bacterial culturing and staining held in CASVAB Quetta

Students too participate in and attend training events. They are also taken on educational trips. Some of

the visits/training are :

• Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) • Geological Survey of Pakistan

• Hazarganjee National Park • Bolan pass

• Rural Poultry Development • CASVAB

Economics Department

Economics is thought to be the toughest subject

amongst all the social sciences. No one can imagine

life without economics, because economy is the most

important pillar among the three basic pillars of

society. The need of the day is to prepare the people,

especially women of the country, to work for the

economic stability and prosperity of the country. To

meet this challenge, the Department of Economics began functioning in May 2004 as one of the

pioneering departments of SBK Women's University,

Quetta, providing opportunities for the women of Balochistan to become good economists.

The M.Sc. Economics course consists of four semesters. Over the past two years, the young regular

faculty has received numerous training organized by the HEC as well as in house training. Modern

teaching techniques for imparting interactive and applied knowledge are used. Students are taken on

field visits on a regular basis. As there are no senior teachers on the university roll due to non

availability of qualified people in Balochistan, senior and experienced faculty come on visiting basis

from different institutions in Balochistan.

The following co-curricular activities have been arranged by the department:

• Visit to State Bank of Pakistan (BSC) Quetta

• Visit to ZTBP, Quetta

• Post-Budget Seminar, 2005

• A seminar on “Gender Empowerment”

By Dr. Karamat, Head of Economics Department,

Bahauddin Zikirya University, Multan

• A lecture on the “Use of SPSS in Econometrics and Research”

By Mr. Mehmood Khalid, HEC Islamabad

• A lecture on “Stock Exchange” by Mr. Mahfooz Ali Khan,

Secretary Finance, Govt. of Balochistan

• A seminar on “Introduction to globalization and gender role in economic development”

conducted by Muhammad Yahya Tajik, Director NIPA Quetta.

To promote the culture of innovation, research and exploration, students are conducting research.

Besides their hectic academic schedule, students are involved in numerous extra curricular activities at

the university. They organize parties, picnics and other programmes.

The friendly and supportive learning environment of SBK Women's University has provided

opportunities to both the faculty and the students to do their best. This is just the beginning! We -- the

faculty are looking forward to making our students the best among the best.

Education Department

Education Department was established at SBK

Women's University in the Fall Semester 2004, which

offered Masters Degree in Education. The duration for

this Degree program is two years four semesters.

The aim of Education Department is to produce good

and well oriented teachers and well equipped

educational administrators; produce highly qualified

and skillful teachers; education builders; teacher

trainers, inquisitive researchers, guidance experts, educational planners and curriculum designers.

Produce creative and dedicated teachers capable to play an effective role in teaching and learning

processes and in the complete development of their

students.

Teaching is interactive and students are evaluated on a

regular basis. They are required to make

presentations on assigned topics; they have to take

surprise quizzes and are encouraged participate in

class discussions to improve their communication

skills and confidence. They are given written

assignments on different topics.

Students of the Education Department went on two excursion trips. Students and faculty are very

actively involved in other activities both social and cultural. The Education department organized a

“Milad” at the university.

English Department

“Nothing is good or bad in the world, it's the way we feel it”. (Shakespeare)

Since the establishment of the University, the English department has been vigorously participating in

academic as well as non academic activities, making

the university an institution of quality learning. The

University is following the curriculum prescribed by

the H.E.C. The academic calendar of two year

duration is divided into four semesters, where

rigorous academic as well as non academic activities

take place. No absences are allowed; there are

assignment, presentations, research work, quizzes

and tests. There is a very high enrollment in the

English Literature department.

One often witnesses, students sitting on benches under the huge pine trees reading from Wordsworth and

Shakespeare, and discussing passages from Emma.

Faculty has received numerous training, and among different activities and discussions for the students,

an important academic event was a week long Classic Film Festival, where different Classic films based

on drama and novels of English classic writers were screened. This provided an opportunity to students

as well as faculty to see on the screen the novels and plays that they had read in the classroom.

Fine Arts Department:

Success of nations depends on those who recognize and

strengthen their cultural heritage. Arts and crafts being one

of the main cultural heritages of the Sub-Continent. The

world is loosing its cultural heritage with the focus on

modern technologies and commercialization of its ethnic

products. It is a recognized fact that Balochistan is the only

area in the world where its arts, crafts and hand embroideries continue to exist in their original form.

SBK Women's University's Department of Fine Arts began in March 2005. The academic activities at

the university are full of excitement, joy and enthusiasm. Fine Arts is a professional study program

rather than academic, and work has to be done with hands,

lots of working materials, clay, plaster of paris, paints both

oil and water, wood carving, sculpturing, that requires a lot

of space. Unfortunately, the Fine Arts Department is

currently housed in an old cottage that has four small

rooms; the department is short of working space. With the

growing student body and the kind of work the students do

using live human models to work from more space is

required.

The students and faculty are always very actively involved in university events that require inputs

from the artistic and esthetic perspective.

The honourable Chancellor/ Governor Balochistan, Mr. Owais Ahmed Ghani had given an

Page 46: 1st Convocation report

42 SBKWU

assignment to the students of the Fine Arts Department, to create a Mehrgarh Corner in the garden of the

Governor's House, Quetta. For this purpose the students did research and also visited Mehrgarh site in

Bolan and completed the assignment.

The faculty members of the Fine Arts department

participated in an Exhibition of female artists of

Balochistan, as well as organized an exhibition and an

arts and poster exhibition for the International

Environment Day at the University, sponsored by the

IUCN.

Students have undertaken numerous visits to

exhibitions at the Arts Council, Balochistan.

Students find the Fine Arts Department very

interesting and the enrollment continues to grow.

Social Work Department:

Social Work department was introduced after one

year of the university's creation in March 2005, and

eight students enrolled. Since its establishment the

emphasis has been laid upon academics along with

research and field visits.

Students have undertaken field and study visits to

Mastung, Khanozai, Kanak, Kandaki, Dasht and

Balozai working with activists and field supervisors of IUCN, SUSG & BRSP.

The Department has been involved in numerous other activities; organized seminars and workshops on

Tuberculosis and Cancer.

Social Work department has to improve the skills of the students in communication with people, they

have to learn “peoples” skills. For that purpose they were attached to different organizations for field

visits and research. They learnt communication skills, report writing skills, mobilization and

presentation skills etc. Students have taken trainings and sessions on PRA, CPI, TNA and Micro credit.

Free medical camp was also arranged at the SBK Women's University on Hepatitis and AIDS.

Sociology Department

Sociology promotes scientific attitude amongst students

towards society. The department of Sociology was

established at the university in 2004 with 34 students.

Masters in Sociology requires students to conduct

empirical research, study human behavior, social and

cultural norms. Students of Sociology department have

done just that during their two years at the SBKWU. They

have conducted various research activities and undertaken numerous study tours. They have studied the

work of the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP) and visited numerous village organizations

and prepared reports on the socioeconomic conditions of District Mastung.

Students also visited Mehargarh in Bolan --an archeological site, and did a presentation during the

honourable Governor Balochistan's visit to the university.

Several of the outstanding graduates have been recruited by the university as faculty.

Urdu Department

The department started its academic activities only with nine students and four teaching staff members.

New courses "ASOOL-e-TEHQEEQ-o-TADVEEN" and "MOAVNAT-e- TADREES" and research

thesis have been included in the syllabus.

Discussion on Urdu Tanz-o-Mazah" "Urdu Swaneyh

Nighari" and workshops on "Asool-e-Tehqeeq, Khaka

Nigari and Tehqeeq-o-tadveen" have been held.

The department organized a "Mushaira" in December

2005. All departments participated. The department was

also involved in numerous social events in addition to

educational activities. Students as well as their parents are

very happy with the standards of education at the

university.

We are living in a society where you have only fifteen seconds to make an impression. Etiquette,

manners and personal grooming are increasingly playing an important role to open the right doors for

you.

The Philosophy behind the name

Oasis - an area in a desert made fertile by underground

water or irrigation Rose - a flower symbolizing

everlasting beauty and grace

Combining the two, symbolizes "woman" growing,

developing and blossoming through education and

knowledge which enhances not only her own personal life, but her family, her community, and

ultimately her country. Through this empowerment comes a responsibility for women to personally

"grow and blossom" within her social framework. The idea

of establishment of the finishing school comes from the

Chancellor of SBK Women's University, Mr. Owais

Ahmed Ghani, and it was established by a consultant from

Canada Mrs. Majeeda Hameed. She designed the course

outline and a complete set up of the Finishing School.

The Finishing School began in March 2005, the first class rdwas held on 3 March, 2005. Formal inauguration of the

thSchool was performed on 7 May 2005, by Begum

Ghazala Owais Ghani, wife of Governor Balochistan. She toured the School, the model cottage, and the

Hani Beauty Salon.

The Finishing Schools has so far completed three courses of 4 month duration.

Begum Ghazala Owais Ghani distributed the Diplomas among the th

students of the first course of “Oasis of Roses” on 20 July, 2005.

nd2 Graduation Ceremony

Once again on completion of the second four month course, Begum

Ghazala Owais Ghani was the Chief Guest and distributed the

The students and faculty of the Oasis of Roses frequently organise workshops on flower arrangement,

fabric painting, candle making and have to undertake mandatory community work.

rd3 Graduation Ceremony students received their

diplomas at the First Convocation of the University.

Students of Oasis of Roses regularly visit the Quetta

Serena Hotel, to learn how hotels and restaurants

operate and how to check into a hotel. They visit

Banks to learn how to open and operate bank

accounts.

Guest Speakers are invited from different spheres of

life such as doctors, gynecologists and women from other disciplines to teach students about life.

The Driving School

Women have to learn all skills especially to be able to drive a car. Motor

driving is as important as learning to cook a meal. If there is an emergency

in the house and there are three vehicles parked in the drive way and there

is no driver what does one do? When married, there are no drivers to take

children to school and to purchase groceries, so the woman of the house has

to do that. If the husband is posted abroad and there are no drivers what

will be the mobility of the woman and her family? That was the idea behind

the introduction of motor driving classes for students at the university. The

SBK Women's University arranged special driving classes for students

through the National Driving School, Quetta, at subsidized rates of Rs 2800 for 35 driving lessons. After

successfully completing the 35 lessons, learners get their driving license. 29 students including several

faculty members have graduated from the school and have their driving licenses. Driving lessons are

provided during university timings. Two Suzuki Bolans are at the Women's University parking area at 1

pm. Each vehicle carries the driver and four

students/learners. The vehicles are taken out on the

streets of Quetta, each learner drives 7 miles. One faculty

who took driving lessons, and after successfully

completing her 35 lessons has a driver's license in her

possession has now purchased her own car and is mobile

and independent and very happy and confident.

Gem and Gemological Institute

Students' Convention

Balochistan is a province bestowed with a vast variety of

natural resources. It is endowed with abundance of marble,

granite and semi precious gemstones. So far, 25 different

types of stones have been discovered in Balochistan. To

make optimum use of the potential available in the form of

indigenous raw material (Marble & Granite), handicraft

manufacturing and gemstone processing institutes are

being established all over the country. In 2002-03 exports of Marble/Granite products from Pakistan

were worth $16.7 million out of this, handicrafts amounted to $ 12.5 million. There is a likelihood of

annual increase of 10% per annum in exports of Marble/Granite products. Realizing the tremendous

potential of growth, the government is paying special attention to it; doing utmost for promotion of this

sector as small industry.

The SBKW University has established a Gem and

Gemological Institute on its campus in collaboration with

Gem and Gemological Institute (GGIP) Peshawar and

Small and Medium Enterprise Authority (SMEDA)

Balochistan. The institute has been established on the

pattern of Gem and Gemological Institute Peshawar

(GGIP). Technical cooperation and assistance has also

been provided by GGIP.

The project will be completed in two phases. At the initial stage, gems cutting, polishing and carving

center has been established. The aim is to give technical training to the faculty, students and women of

Balochistan. To use state of the art technology in cutting and polishing semi precious gemstones and in

manufacturing of marble and granite handicrafts; enabling them to come into this business and generate

self-employment through exports. It is expected that, about 300 women will be trained in the first two

years.

(By Durdana Khosa, Lecturer English Dept.)

The Students' Convention is a historic event in the history of Pakistan. We have no example of such a

gathering being assembled in the past as matters relating to the country's youth have seldom received

any attention they deserve. Since 1999 a number of unprecedented policy initiatives have been

introduced, and Students' Convention is yet another new initiative by the government of Pakistan to

Page 56: 1st Convocation report

52 SBKWU

engage students of the nation in dialogue on pertinent issues. To bring them on a single platform. The

philosophy behind Students' Convention is to understand how the youth of Pakistan can play a

constructive role in the development of Pakistan and prepare prospective leaders that in future are a

valuable assets to the country.

The objectives of the event are:

• To promote cultural integration among students

• To provide them a forum to share and exchange their views

The emphasis is on listening and engaging students into discussions during three thematic discussions. nd th

The first Convention was held in 2004 from 22 to 24 May in the Convention Centre, Islamabad, and so

far three Conventions have been organized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Over 100 top

students participating in this mega event are drawn from all over the country; Azad Jammu Kashmir and

Deeni Madaris on the basis of their performance in the contests arranged at regional and provincial

levels.

Durdana Khosa and Farkhanda Shahid from the Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University were

selected to participate in the First Students' Convention. The themes for the discussion in the First

Convention were:

• Investment in education: an essential ingredient for development

• Extremism is a barrier to development

• Enlightened moderation is the key to globalization

The final day was presided over by the President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharref, who

announced on the occasion that 50 students from among the 100 will be selected to visit the Peoples

Republic of China.

Six students from Balochistan were selected to be the part of delegation. From SBKWU, Durdana

Khosa was selected to represent the University. It was a 15 days long trip to China. Basically, it was a

ChinaPakistan Youth Friendly Exchange program with 100 member youth delegation to visit each other

respectively.

So far, HEC has organized three events. Smaller Conventions on provincial level were organized to

select students for the National Convention. Sardar Bahadur Khan Women's University had the honor of

hosting the first and the second provincial Students' Convention in 2005; The Governor Balochistan

Owais Ahmad Ghani was the Chief Guest on the second Convention. Students from different

universities of the province participated in the event.

Students' Convention so far has proved to be a valuable learning experience for all delegates and

observers and has opened new dimensions to their thought process.

Young Leaders' Conference 2OO6

(By Shamaila Arif Chaudhry)

Introduction

Six students from the SBKWU participated in the YLC organized at Islamabad. The students were

sponsored by HUBCO at the cost of Rs. 35,000/- per participant; HUBCO also paid for their air

tickets from Quetta to Islamabad and back. Outstanding students from the Women's University were

selected and sent to Islamabad.

School of Leadership, also known as SOL, held a conference at Hotel Pearl Continental Rawalpindi

during the first week of July 2006. This conference was titled as 'Young Leaders Conference'. SOL holds

such conferences each year, which are aimed at changing the general attitude of youth from pessimism

to optimism. Trainers, motivation speakers and celebrities from different fields interact with these

representatives of youth and through speeches and activities polish the leadership qualities in them.

These representatives of youth are titled as 'Young Leaders'. The lodging arrangements for the YLs are

remarkable. The beauty of YLC is in observation of time. Punctuality and discipline are the chief norms

observed during the conference. YLC 2006 was one such workshop, which lasted for six days. YLs

participated in it from all parts of the country and also from abroad such as China, India, and Nepal and

also from USA.

Objectives

Basically, the aim of YLC is to change the apathetic attitude of youth, which arises from the

discouraging social circumstances. In the words of SOL team, the change of attitude from 'I can't' to 'I

can'. The main objective of YLC is to provide the YLs with the followings:

• Motivation

• Empathy

• Self realization

• Energy

• Choices

In a nutshell, YLC provides a platform where youth can feel responsibility towards the society and focus

on a vision that is a better Pakistan and fly in order to attain their aim.

The Learning We Gained

The conference was a great opportunity for us. We gained a lot of confidence, learnt to rely on ourselves,

we learnt to take personal responsibility for our shortcomings and we learnt that unless we step-up in
