Royal Heart, Loyal Heart Joseph Saves His Family

Fall 1 © 1998 by Discipleship Publications International The Life of Joseph 3-3-3

The Life of JosephLesson 3

The children will learn the story of how Joseph saved his family andforgave his brothers.

MaterialsFor the teacher:• 1 deck of regular playing cards

Preparation1. Practice telling the Bible Story using the deck of cards.2. Separate all the “hearts” from the deck of cards.

Introducing the Bible StoryDirect the children to the story area. Remind them that last weekthey heard some very difficult things that happened to Joseph: hewas almost murdered, thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, accused ofa crime he did not commit and then forgotten by someone who wassupposed to help him get out of jail. Today, they are going to hearwhat happened to Joseph not long after he was forgotten in prison.

Royal HeartsHave your Bible open to Genesis 41. Tell the children that today’sBible Story comes from Genesis 41 through 46. The Bible says thattwo years after Joseph was forgotten, Pharaoh—who was the king—had a dream. He did not understand the dream so he sent for thewisest men in the land to come and tell him the meaning of hisdream. No one could tell Pharaoh what his dream meant.

One of the men who was there was the same man that Josephhad helped in prison. This man was an important servant of theking. He remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him. Pharaohcalled for Joseph to come. The Bible says that Joseph shaved andchanged his clothes and then went before the king. Joseph told theking exactly what his dream meant and that it was a message fromGod. The king was so impressed with Joseph that he put him incharge of the whole land of Egypt. He dressed Joseph in royalclothes and made him the second most powerful man in all the land.Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the king’s service.

Hold up the King, Queen and Jack of hearts. Remind the children that because God was with Joseph, he became like a king—

in charge of the whole country! Pass out the three cards for threechildren to hold.

Loyal HeartsFor seven years, there was a time of great success and abundance.Joseph knew that after these seven years would come seven yearsof famine when there would be nothing to harvest. During theseven good years, Joseph collected food and stored it away so thatthere would be plenty of food for the people during the famine. When the famine came, people came from all over the world toEgypt to buy food.

Some of the people who came to buy food were Joseph’s broth-ers. They had no food in their land and they would die if they didnot get some. Ten of Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to get food. They did not recognize Joseph but he recognized them. At first hedid not tell them who he was. He sent them back home to bringthe youngest son Benjamin, who was born after Joseph. The broth-ers were afraid of Joseph so they did as he said. When theyreturned with the youngest son, Joseph finally told them who hewas. Joseph cried so loud that the people could hear all around him.The Bible says that his brothers were terrified. They did not knowwhat to say. But Joseph told them to come close to him and hehugged and kissed them. He cried and they talked. Joseph toldthem not to be afraid. God had planned for all of this to happen sothat they would be saved. Joseph told his brothers to go and gettheir father and come and live with him in Egypt and they did.

Take out the rest of the heart cards. Pass them out to the children.

Share and TellTell the children to take turns standing up and, holding their cards, say one way that Joseph was “royal” like a king or one way that hewas “loyal” or loving to his brothers. Then ask them to name oneperson that they are going to tell this week about Joseph. Continueuntil each child has had a chance. Close with a prayer for the chil-dren to have loyal hearts for their families like Joseph had for his.

Teacher Tips• Practice telling the story with feeling and expression.

The Life of JosephLesson 3

The children will make an Egyptian-style necklace to remind themthat Joseph saved his family while he was a ruler in Egypt.

MaterialsFor each child:• 1 circle of black construction paper, 31/2" diameter• crayons• 1 piece of yarn or string, 18"• 8 pieces of round macaroni: ziti, elbow or penne• cup with paper beads prepared during PreclassFor the teacher:• hole punch • 1 glue stick• scissorsReproducible Pages:• Page B, 1 copy for each childNOTE: Reproducing Page B on heavy paper will eliminate the needfor the construction paper circles and glue sticks.

Preparation1. Prepare a Life Saver necklace to show the children as an example.2. Cut out the construction paper circles for the children.3. Cut out the “medallions” from copies of Reproducible Page B for

the children.4. Glue the medallions to the construction paper and punch with a

hole a half inch from the top for the children.

Instructions1. In our Bible Story, we learned that God blessed Joseph in many

ways. Joseph was finally released from prison because he helpedPharoah understand his dream. Pharaoh believed that Josephwas a godly man and so he made Joseph ruler over Egypt. While Joseph was in Egypt, there was a terrible famine andJoseph’s brothers were afraid they would starve to death. Theytraveled many miles to ask the King of Egypt for food for theirfather and family. They did not know that Joseph was a ruler inEgypt. When Joseph saw his brothers, he was so happy that hecried! Not only did he give them food, but he invited them to

come and live with him in Egypt. At first his brothers wereafraid of Joseph because they had treated him so badly whenhe was young. But Joseph forgave them and told them that itwas God who let it happen so that they could be saved! Josephtrusted and honored God. He devoted his life to doing whatpleased God. God used him to save his family. Now you aregoing to make an Egyptian-style necklace to remind you thatJoseph was in Egypt when he saved his family.

2. Show the children the Life Saver necklace that you made.Distribute the paper beads that the children prepared, the medal-lions that you prepared, the yarn, macaroni and crayons.

3. Tell the children to write their names on the backs of theirmedallions. Then have them place the yarn through the hole, asshown in Figure A.

4. Tell the children to thread their paper beads and macaroni onboth sides of the medallion. They may thread them however theylike, using any pattern or order they choose, as shown in Figure B.

5. When they have finished threading their necklace, help them totie the yarn at the end.

ConclusionEncourage the children for their creative efforts. Have the childrenwear their necklaces and read together the words on their medal-lions. Close with a prayer that the children will be as forgiving totheir brothers and sisters as Joseph was to his brothers.

Teacher Tips• Consider preparing a few different samples to show the children a

variety patterns that they can make with the beads and macaroni.• For easier threading, tape the ends of the yarn for the children.

The children will identify things that they think Joseph would do andthink of ways that they can be like him by playing this game.

MaterialsFor the teacher:• Joseph costume: robe, crown and scepter

Preparations1. Prepare a costume that you will wear during this game.2. Practice playing this game at home.

Instructions1. Come to class in costume. Explain that today’s game is a fun

review of this week’s Bible Story. Remind them of the story, say-ing: We learned that after Joseph was released from prison, hebecame a very powerful ruler in Egypt. He was so successfulthat the King made him the top ruler in the country. We alsolearned that Joseph’s brothers were starving from the famine. They came to Egypt to look for food. When Joseph saw hisbrothers, he was so happy that he cried. He not only gave themfood, but invited all of his brothers and his father to come andlive in Egypt—and they did! Joseph forgave his brothers foreverything they did to him. That was a good thing because hisbrothers were afraid that he would still be angry after all theseyears. Joseph told them not to be afraid. He told them Godused what they did so that he could save them. And that iswhat he did.

2. This game is played in a similar way as “Mother May I?” Have thechildren form a line side-by-side. Tell them that you are going tobe Joseph in this game. You will stand at one end of the gamearea, and the children at the other. The children will take turnsasking, “Joseph, may I take some food?” You will ask each one a question. If they answer correctly, then all the children mayadvance by taking one big step. If the child does not answer correctly, then everyone must go backward one small step.

3. Play continues until the children have reached the front oruntil all the questions have been asked. Play as many times astime permits.

ConclusionEncourage the children to try and play a game like this with theirfamilies over the holidays. Instead of asking questions about Joseph, they can ask people to say something they are thankful for. Closewith a prayer for the children to see how blessed they are by God.

Teacher Tips• If you are unfamiliar with this game, ask someone to explain it

to you.

The children will review the names of Jacob’s twelve sons as theyplay this Bingo game.

MaterialsFor each child:• Bingo markers prepared during PreclassFor the teacher:• scissors• a hat or small basketReproducible Pages:• Page E, 1 copy for each child • Page F, 1 copy for the teacher

Preparation1. Cut out the names of Jacob’s sons from your copy of

Reproducible Page F. Fold them and place them in the hat or basket.

2. Practice this game at home.

Instructions1. This is the last week that they will review the names of Joseph’s

brothers. Today, they will review them in a game of Bingo. 2. Using the opposite side of this lesson card, briefly review the

names of the twelve sons of Jacob with the children.3. Distribute the Bingo markers prepared during Preclass and the

copies of Reproducible Page E to the children. 4. Explain that you will call out the name of one of Jacob’s sons. If

they have that name, they will place a marker on it. If theydon’t, they will wait until the next name is called. They may onlyplace one marker per name called. Invite the children to place amarker on the free space in the middle.

5. Play continues until all the names have been called or until thechildren get Bingo. Return names to the hat or basket and play asecond time. Invite a child to be the caller for the next round.

ConclusionRemind the children that Joseph loved his brothers and saved themeven after they had done something mean to him. God wants us toforgive and love our brothers and sisters. Close with a prayer for thechildren to be forgiving like Joseph, especially during the holidays.

Action

Forgive others quickly when they hurt you.

Don’t tell the truth because you might getin trouble.

Get upset if your friend gets a prize andyou don’t.

Ask for forgiveness when you hurt someone.

Tell the truth even if you will get in trouble.

Play only with other kids who are like you.

Talk while your teacher is talking.

Refuse to play if you can’t be the leader.

Grumble and complain when you are askedto do chores.

If you find something that does not belongto you, you don’t try to find the owner.

If someone is making fun of another child, you defend them.

You do what is right even if no one is looking.

You do what is right only when someone iswatching you.

Joseph would do this Joseph would not do this
