Study by Dr Carol Dweck

Carol Dweck, a leading psychologist, took 400 students and gave them a simple puzzle.

Study by Dr Carol Dweck

Afterwards, each of the students were given six words of praise. Half were praised for intelligence: "Wow, you must be really smart!" The other half were praised for effort: "Wow, you must be hard working!"

Study by Dr Carol Dweck

Dweck was seeking to test whether these simple words, with their subtly different emphases, could make a difference to the student's mindsets. The results were remarkable. After the first test, the students were given a choice of whether to take a hard

or an easy test. A full 2/3 of the students praised for intelligence chose the easy task - they did not want to risk losing their ‘smart’ label.

Study by Dr Carol Dweck

The group praised for intelligence showed a 20% decline in performance compared with the first test, even though it was no harder.

But the effort-praised group increased their score by 30%. Failure had actually spurred them on.

Mindset Experiments

Mindset experiments Computer studies students received lessons on the importance of a growth mindset. It resulted in a dramatic improvement in test scores after a six-week intervention.

Students at Stanford University were encouraged towards a growth mindset in one workshop. At the end of term, these students had earned significantly higher grade point averages than the control group

Growth vs Fixed Mindsets Growth Fixed

Intelligence can be developed:

-  Nurture -  Developed -  Can be changed

Intelligence is static:

-  Nature -  Genetic -  Can’t change it

Focused on learning Focused on appearing smart

Potential unknow(n)able Potential limited

Achievement linked to effort Achievement linked to talent

Setbacks cause them to learn from mistakes & persevere

Setbacks cause them to hide mistakes & give up

Welcomes challenges Avoids challenges

“I must work hard to achieve. “I’m not great at Maths now, but if I work hard, I will be!”

“I can cruise to the top.” “Why bother...I’m just not good with numbers.”

Effort An excerpt from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.

Effort An excerpt from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

We're comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.

Effort An excerpt from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand - one is a seed of corn, the other is nightshade, a deadly poison.

Effort An excerpt from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds - one corn, the other nightshade. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land. What will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted. "As we sow, so shall we reap." In other words, what we put in, we get out!”

Effort An excerpt from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up come the two plants – one corn, one poison. The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant...success...or failure; a concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant must return to us.

Grit What is it? The combination of very high persistence and high passion for a long term goal. Research suggests… “Self discipline out predicts IQ for academic success by a factor of 2.”
