kEn’s Korner Chapter Director - Ken Freeland
“Chapter News” History of GWRRA Chapter CA1K
It all started when Rick Dyer was District Director of District F and Michelle and I were
the ACD’s and COY’s of Chapter S in Ventura. As much as we both loved the members of Chapter S it was over fifty five miles just get to the meetings on a Saturday morning. I had
this brilliant idea to start a chapter in the North San Fernando Valley area. I approached Rick
and he said that we should take over Chapter K, as it was closing.
So with $50.00 in the Chapter account Syl Emery and myself took over CA1K. Syl was
my ACD. The chapter grew slowly, most of the members that attended those early meet-ings were friends from South Central, Los Angeles. They road all the way up into the San
Fernando Valley to help us get started. The chapter grew with new members. It’s a struggle to grow a chapter again after it has almost closed. It was at the District Rally at the Sheraton
Hotel in Agoura Hills that Nadine stepped into our chapter lives. She became a very
important part of the chapter.
Dave Gilman eventually took over as ACD of the Chapter when Syl moved to Oregon
and eventually took my place as the CD. Dave was without a doubt the best thing that hap-
pened to the chapter. He added new blood and ideas to make the chapter grow. He is the main force behind our annual Mother’s Day Ride. Without him and the support of Hamer
Toyota we could not put the ride on.
When Dave got promoted at work and had to spend more time there Nadine took over
as CD. She is without a doubt one of the most invigorating people I know. Here again, she is really organized and was a GREAT CD. After a couple of years and a new job I did some-
thing I never thought I would do again, I agreed to become CD again if she would stay on as
ACD. I have since added Chip and Charli as ACD’s.
As in all chapters, the membership ebbs and flows. Chapter CA1K is lucky to have a real-ly good core membership and like all chapters, the few does the work of many for the chap-
ter.
One last thing, our 10th Annual Mothers Day Ride was a “GREAT” success. Our attend-
ance was down a little over 25%, but everyone had a great time. Another thing that hurt was
we had 25 attendees that were comp compared to 12 last year. We could never have pulled everything together if it had not been for the hard work of Dave Gilman and the generosity
of Hamer Toyota.
Thanks, Get out and ride.

Once the temperature outside exceeds that of
body temperature you need to wrap up rather than undress. Why?
1) To reduce water loss from evaporation
2) Create a cooler microclimate around your body
3) Prevent serious sunburn.
A few tips for riding in the hottest conditions
Light colored, full-face helmet. It might sound unbelievable but when it gets really hot it’s cooler
to ride with a closed visor. Sunglasses, loose cot-
ton shirt with long sleeves (cooler than a T-shirt) wear anything in a light color. Denim or heavy-
weight cotton pants are best for hot weather.
WATER COOLING - Riding in wet clothes is much
cooler. Wet your scarf and hair, and in very hot
conditions soak everything if possible and do it every hour or so.
PREVENT Fatigue - Stop frequently to rest, stretch, move around, drink water and cool
down. Research shows that accident rates are
reduced by regular short rest breaks.
Prevent SUNBURN. Remember that you can burn
through many lightweight fabrics (a good reason
to go for denim/heavy cotton outer gar-ments). Apply total sun block with highest SPF
(Sun Protection Factor) for those exposed bits of
flesh. Pay special attention to the ‘danger’ areas – between sleeve and gloves, back of the neck,
throat and ‘V-neck’ if jacket is undone, and nose.
Don’t forget to keep re-applying it too.
DEHYDRATION. Signs are less frequent urination
(urine passed will be less in volume and darker in
color), fatigue, headache, dizziness and cramps. Dehydration can be very very serious but it is
preventable. Drink lots of water. This is probably
the most important thing about riding in hot weather. Consider using drinking bottles that
allow you to drink while on the move. If not,
stop often and make sure you carry a good sup-ply of water.
ON THE MOVE: Start riding early in the day (at
daybreak on extremely hot days). Stopping by midday and having an extended siesta makes
good sense. When riding at dusk or dawn watch
out for animals on the road. Where there’s a choice of routes, take the road at higher alti-
tude. It will be cooler and may be more fun.
Use the correct engine oil & check level often. If the oil gets too hot it may be too thin to lubricate
effectively. Do the usual motorcycle checks –
tires, coolant etc. Cover your black vinyl seat with a lighter color to prevent bottom burns!
And finally, REMEMBER to carry warm clothes and waterproofs. Many times hot days can also
get very cold and wet.
Ride Safe,
Nadine.
“Hot Weather Riding Tips”
Air pressure, fuel mileage and potty breaks! These are some of the things that
are constantly bouncing around in that big noggin of mine as I am ambling down
the highway, with or without anyone else with me. I seem to be obsessed with air
pressure as it relates to the tires on my bike. I simply will not leave the house
without checking my tire pressures and I usually end up checking Ken’s as well.
I check my tire pressures so much that I get to know the rhythm of how much
air will be lost during the week (about 1 pound) and how temperature effects air
pressure. You see, the manual states that my 1800 takes 36 pounds in the front
and 41 pounds in the rear when the tires are cold, presumably meaning after the
tires have cooled overnight and before you swing a leg over. But I can tell you
from experience that “summer cold” is completely different from “winter cold”
when it comes to air pressures. But by constantly checking my tire pressure over
a variety of conditions, I can get a “feel” for how temperature and weather af-
fect my tires. I can see the results of my efforts by watching the wear patterns
on my tires.
Fuel mileage is also a constant worry for me when I am riding. I always reset my
trip odometer when I fill up, so I know how many miles I have put on that tank of
gas. My 1800 averages about 40 miles per gallon, give or take, so I know that I
have a maximum of 240 miles in that tank of gas. That can change though, de-
pending on speed and terrain, so I always plan a fuel stop in the 180 to 200 mile
range. When traveling with other bikes with less range, the group might have to
stop sooner. I think that it is always a good idea to go ahead and top off my tank,
even if I think I can make the whole route without it, better to be safe than sor-
ry!
Then there is the always the welcomed potty break. I note that it is always wel-
come but seldom requested! Many times I have wished that someone in the group
would request a break, but I myself would not want to be the first to suggest it.
Sometimes I have ridden drowsy, in discomfort or even in pain, just because I
didn’t want to bother the group with a break. So for gosh sake, help me. If for
any reason you need to stop for a break, let me know. I need one too!

“Tucson Here We Come!!”
We hope that you all join us at the
Region F convention this year. We’ve al-
ways had a lot of fun at the Region F convention and I am sure this year will
not be any different. Going to a Region F
is another opportunity for you to see all
your friends you’ve met along the way
throughout our Region. What better way
to stay in touch with all those
marvelous people you’ve met. After all
that is what GWRRA is all about,
“Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, our motto that we live by.
Always focusing on the “Friends”
because frankly that is why we all hang
out together, we’re “friends”, and many
say we’re “family”. Below is a recap on
what you are actually getting for your
$119.00 per night hotel stay. A brief
synopsis of what the $30.00 credit is all
about and how it is used. We’ve always attached a schedule of events for the
Region F convention so you can see
what is happening each day.
If you want education this is where you
should be. The CA convention unfortu-
nately will not be having a UTDP class.
So if you want to become a seminar pre-
senter this is where to do it. Also
Region F is having the Amazing Team
Challenge, so if you want to test your
skills at riding at low speeds, come out
and show us what you can do. Because of limited open areas at the CA conven-
tion we will not be having the Amazing
Team Challenge. Shiny bikes, chrome
and just pure beauty, come and enter
your bike in the “Bike Show” at the
Region F convention, we know how you
all like those bragging privileges of
winning that special trophy. There is
something to do for everyone at the
Region F convention, so we hope to see
many of you there.
Until next month, ride well,
ride often

A Mystery Ride
Plans are in progress for a ride with an unknown destination with stops along the way. It will be an all day ride and might even be an over night stay. That will be worked out before the ride of course. Look for this to occur in June!!!!
Is there a favorite restaurant you would like to share with the group? An evening ride is great for the summer and we can all ride and meet at the restaurant!
All ideas for rides are welcome! Plan a ride for the group!

A Holiday Gift
When we think of holiday gifts we may picture toys, electronics, personal items such as clothing or jewelry. How about something different for the holidays - an awesome 1st Aid Kit and signing up a loved one for a 1st Aid course. The ability to respond to a basic 1st Aid emergency and possibly save a life is the greatest gift you can give. Information on kits and classes is available at the American Red Cross website: http://www.redcross.org/

What is GWRRA Chapter CA-1K?
We are a family oriented motorcycle organization spon-
sored by the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA).
Although most of our motorcycles are Gold Wings, we welcome
all makes and models - two or three wheeled.
Our Chapter area covers the San Fernando Valley, Santa
Clarita, and adjoining cities, a large portion of Simi Valley, Bur-
bank, Glendale, and portions of Los Angeles / West Los Angeles.
As GWRRA members, we are committed to the enjoyment of
motorcycling, motorcycling safety, memorable rides throughout
California and our beautiful country.
Committed, happy, and involved members and their fami-
lies is the cornerstone of our existence. We recently created a
photo album on the website for member's to post pictures of
their motorcycles, travels, and memorable events. We encour-
age you to take a look at them.
Staying busy, traveling often is commonplace for members
of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter CA-1K.
