• Basic Information about the Scientific Revolution

• When: Between the 1550s– the early 1700s.

• Where: Europe, mostly countries in Western Europe including: Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal

• What was it?• A time period in history when people began to

change the way that they looked at the world and started to QUESTION EVERYTHING!

• Why did it happen?• People began to use science, observation, and

experiments to figure out how things worked instead of accepting the teachings of the church and traditional values.

scientists have discovered over time?

• Science uses a method of testing theories (ideas about how things work) called the scientific method • Uses steps including a hypothesis, experiment,

and observation to prove a theory

• Before the Scientific Revolution, science was called “natural philosophy”. • Mixture of moral thinking, religious beliefs and

thoughts, mathematics, and MAGIC! • Used teachings of the Ancient Greeks • Did not rely on experiments or testing any

hypotheses

• Causes of the Scientific Revolution:

• During the 1500s, people began to question what they had always believed about the world:

• Why?

• 1. Printing Press– Machine that allowed copies to be made of the same information. • Could get information out fast to spread new ideas and

beliefs

• 2. Age of Exploration–European countries were trying to explore the world and wanted more scientific research done to improve navigation. • Encouraged thinkers to use SCIENCE and EXPERIMENTS!

• 3. New Knowledge from Muslim Scholars– Muslim scholars were sharing their discoveries, which opened the minds of European thinkers and Scientists!
