THE CASINO

Is the name of Mr. Nolte's new es-

tablishment nt lvapiolani Park. The building is pleasantly situated afew miles from town, and was builtby Mr. Lucas. It comprises a largeroom sixty by thirty feet, always atthe disposal of the public, and whichcan bo utilized for private picnics ordances, the floor being a good one.It is well lighted and opens on to awide verandah. In a corner of theroom is a bar, whence unintoxicat-in- g

beverages arc supplied to thethirsty traveler. Bath rooms, dressing rooms, a good kitchen and theprivate apartments of Mr. Nolte areat the rear of the public room ; thegrounds in front are being cultivated, and will soon be covered with grassand flowers. The painting andpaper hanging were executed byMr. Kohm, and the house is fittedwith chandeliers, intended ultimatelyfor gas. On Tuesday' several hun-

dred visitors partook of the proprie-

tor's hospitality, being conveyedthere chiefly by Dodd's busses. Wehope that the venture will be a suc-

Tiik new Hawaiian half dollars havebeen christened by the natives Kcmo

Ailulu,. which, being Interpreted, meansJames who eats taro tops. The reasonfor this" singular appellation Is becausethe likeness resembles exactly JamesHumphrey, who was noted for his par-

tiality to taro tops.

The double band concert, on Tues-

day afternoon, attracted an enormousnudlcnce. The music was good, peopleexpressing surprise at the degree ofperfection attained by the ReformatorySchool baud. The new uniforms of theHawaiian band, worn for the first time, were much admired.

Tins effects of Christmas ilny werefelt by an increase in the treasury ofthe Station IIouso yesterday. Seventeeninebriates, four gentlemen who createdallrays, three for assaults, one for dis-

turbing the quiet of the night, and onefor furious and heedless driving, allcontributed their quota to the revenueof the country.

On Sunday Dr. MeGrcw celebratedhis sixtieth birthday, and, on Monday,Judge Widomann celebrated his sixty-secon- d.

Both gentlemen were visitedby a very large circle of friends whowished to see them, halo and hearty, sixty years hence. Ills Majesty sentthe band to play at Dr. MoGrcw's houseon Monday morning, being under theimpression' that that was the day of thedoctor's natal celebration.

A most enjoyable incetingof the YoungPeople's. Temperance Union took placeon Tuesday evening at the residenco ofMiss Breeze, the house being crowded. The entertainment commenced withreadings by Mif-- s Kbit and Master A.Carter. Miss Brecse then explained howSanta Clans had crossed the ocean toMirprise the little ones of Honolulu. He.then made his appeal ance in the personnf J. Not! Jr., though some said it wasNott S inta Clans, and gave a present toeach member of the Union. After thissurprise to the young folks, Miss Brcesewas surprised by receiving a bedroomlounge and suite from her bible class, for which she briefly returned thanks. After three cheers fo'r Miss Brcese andthree for Santa Clans, the company par-took of refreshments before adjourning.

The Christmas eve of 1833 will lou;rbe remembered in Honolulu. The streetswere thronged with folks who had post-

poned purchasing tin ir gifH till the lastmoment, and Thrum's and Lycan'sstores, about 10 o'clock, were almostdenude of toys. The auction sale at theGolden Rule Bazaar was crowded, andthe stores of Mollis, Fishel and Water-hous- e

did a good business. WhenMellisdisplayed his magic lantern views, Fortstreet was impassablel and the sidewalk,in front of Number Ten, was blockedliv people watching the mechanical toyc.Wenner and Broglie & Spear were wellpatronized as were the barbers and gro-cers. Later on the Hawaiian B ind sere-nnde- d

the town and found its way to thehotel, where a large number of visitors, including Ills Mijctv, were assembled. His Excellency Paul Neumann was

the rccipieut of a spuch'.l fere-nud- e,

"for he's a jolly good fellow" beingreceived with cheers. String bands pa.raded the town,- - delighting some anddisturbing others with their Hawaiianmelodies. Christmas nlghl was celebrated at the hotel hy a small dance inthe public sitting room, which was veryenjoyable.

T11UHSDAY, DEC. 27, 1883.

THE KING OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS.

His Majesty, Kulnknim 1, of Ha-

waii, appears disposed to innko n

stir cic long. Through Iiis Minis-tci- s,

iv cliiiin has been set tip fqrsovereignty over all the uiuinnexudislands of the l'ncillo, he being theonly sovereign in this direction. Itis not likely that the modest pro-

posal will have much effect, althoughit appears a "great ofllcer of state"has gone forth from Hawaii with aHag and instructions to annex allthe islands he comes across, afterthe style of recent annexation pro-

ceedings from Queensland. Howthe little kingdom of his majestycould hold the islands supposing hehad them is a problem, for the solu-

tion of which there is neither mennor money available in his domi-

nions. Possibly ho might arrangewith a syndicate. But, at present,ho has more territory now than peo-

ple to occupy it profitably ; for theislanders, through leprosy and otherscourges, arc dying out rapidly.Toxcn and Country Journal.

A TARCEDY THAT MADE A CEMETERY.

The Baltimore Green Mountaincemetery lias a most romantic his-tos- y.

Fifty years ago it was thu

happy homo of the Oliver family, which consisted of the father andtwo children, son and daughter. The daughter, who was a beautifulgirl, had many suitors, but to all didshe nay, save one, a poor youngman of whomc her father disapprov-ed, and whomc he had forbidden tobee. He had also taken an oath thatif he caught the young man on thegrounds he would shoot him. Buttrue love not onlg laughs at bolt andbars, but at shotgun as well. Oneevening the young lady, havingjiggrcccl to meet her lover at the footof the lane, donned a suit of herbrother's clothes, hoping thereby toesdape detection, and sallied forth. Her keen-eye- d father caiiajht sight ofher as she marched boldly along, and thinking he recognized in thetrespasser the young man who hadbeen forbidden the grounds raisedhis gun and iirad. The feminineshriek which pierced the air revealedto him what he had done. II isdaughter was dead before he reachedher side, and from that day thewretched father became a wandererupon the face af the earth. He tookhis son and went abroad, leaving hisbes property in the hands of anagent with orders to sell the home-

stead for a cemetery. In a shorttime the city purchased the grounds, and the body of the murdered girlwas the lii&t one to be buried there.-- Uorreepondcncc Uieveland Leader.

NOT SUCH A FOOL.

The mysteries or feminine costume

have ever been held to be a scaledbook to long-sufferi- men. Butone of the sterner sex recently playedoff an innocence of those mattersupon the woman whom he had swornto love, honour, and cherish, in astyle that was just a trille too thin. The poor lady had expressedan ardent desire for

to completeher Gup dress, and the guilelessyouth had responded to her desireWilli an aiacniy mai suprisuu ner uy,proniising to interview Messrs.Geoige and George on his way homethe following evening. The "horrorand amaze" of the good woman onreceiving at the hands of a messen-ger a note saying that her lord andmaster had gone to the "club" witha packet containing a dozen and ahalf buttons of the fashionable colour, instead of the gloves for which herspirit yearned, may be more easilyimagined than described. "I knewlie wns'ft fool, but I didn't think howas such a fool ns all that!" she tear-

fully remarked tota sympathisingvisitor. "She took mo for a flat, butI'in not quite such a fool as I look ! ' 'remarked the inhuman master to afriend as he related his brutal joke, and chuckled oyer the desolaljon ofsoul which It had ocottsjoiipil,-2''0tf-e- ral
