Objectives:To show that conflicts of interest may
arise between industrialists and others.
Homework:
• Identify and explain three ways in which you can limit your impact on the environment.
Industry and Conflict
• Conflict may arise between factory owners and the inhabitants of the surrounding area.
• Example: Location of incinerators – such as the one built by Indaver in Duleek, Co. Meath.
• The construction of an incinerator in Cork was also opposed.
What is an incinerator?
• An incinerator is a factory that burns waste.
• Everywhere they are built, people protest against them.
Why do people protest against incinerators?
• Some scientists believe that fumes created by incinerators are carcinogenic.
• A carcinogen is a cancer causing agent.• Carcinogens can lead people to develop
various forms of cancer.
Positives of incinerators
• Can you imagine what these might be?
Positives of incinerators
• Provide an alternative to landfill sites, which are filling up.
• Countries across the EU use incinerators to get rid of waste and rubbish.
• They can be used to generate electricity for the region in which they are located and also attract other industry.
• Jobs will be created → people needed to build and maintain incinerator.
Negatives of incinerators
• Can you imagine what these might be?
Negatives of incinerators
• People living close to incinerators fear toxins may be emitted that are poisonous and carcinogenic.
• Might lead people to ignore more environmentally friendly ways of waste disposal (e.g. recycling) if incineration is seen as an easy option.
