Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFrom Fear To Faith

August 10, 2014

First Reading - 1Kings 19:9, 11-13Elijah’s experience is a perfect parable oflife. We live in a terrifying world thatthreatens to blow us away or tear usapart. The tiniest whisper of hope, themost subtle expression of faith, however, puts fear to flight and provides refugeagainst destruction.

Second Reading - Romans 9:1-5The apostle Paul was deeply burdenedfor the fate of his fellow Israelites. Hefeared that they had squandered theadvantages and blessings that God hadgiven them. But he held to the faith thatGod would never abandon the Jews andthat they would return to God.

Gospel - Matthew 14:22-33Simon Peter almost made a career ofgreat beginnings and failed endings. Hewalked on water until fear got the best ofhis faith. He was ready to die for hisMaster until fear caused him to denyhim three times. But he always cried outfor help when fear overwhelmed himand his faith saved him.

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS

ISAIAH 56:1, 6-7

ROMANS 11:13-15, 29-32

MATTHEW 15:21-28

When Sailors’ Skills Are Not Enough By: Kristina M. DeNeve Adult Faith Formation Coordinator Diocese of Honolulu

The disciples’ journey in today’s Gospel is much like our dailylife. We are already followers of Jesus, baptized and regularly fedby Scripture and Eucharist. When we sense Jesus telling us to dosomething, we try our best to do it.

So we set out in the boat as asked. How many times are we thensurprised, shocked or angered when things do not go well?! Jesustold them to get in the boat, but he did not necessarily promisesmooth sailing.

Facing the storm, the disciples used their sailing expertise. Andwe too use our skills when problems arise. Unfortunately, however, talents often are not enough B for them or for us. Whenwe completely focus on the wind, our problems can stilloverwhelm us. (Note too that this entire pattern repeats itselfagain with Peter!)

Life’s troubles only end when Jesus reaches out to them. Jesusprovides what is most needed. Then we see the disciples get itright: self-congratulations are not warranted, only praise andworship of God. God help me remember this story the next timethe storms come!
