Q. I have been selling GM vehicles for over 20 yearsand now have older customers who need a vehicle thatwill handle a lift of some sort to assist in carryingtheir scooter or power wheelchair. With no GM mini-vans available, what other type of vehicle will work?Simona H.-VA.

A. These two questions relate to the same challenge,room to roam!! Individuals with larger chairs, prostheticsor who just need room to maneuver to transfer, need fullsize vehicles. My take on the fuel efficient vehicle is thatwe will see more hybrid vans and even electric vehiclesthat can be customized by mobility dealers to solvemobility challenges. However, the old adage of 10lbs. ofpotatoes fitting into a 5 lb sack is most appropriate. Youcan be fuel efficient, stylish, dual fuel and all electric, butif you cannot get into the car or van or cannot get yourwheelchair or scooter into the vehicle then your mobilityis greatly compromised. Let’s hope the full size Ford orChevy van is never discontinued as a lot of peopledepend on the floor room to handle their individualneeds. Vehicles have to be convenient to use both fromthe care giver’s perspective as well as the individual withmobility problems. The whole package needs to belooked at, ease of entry, type of lift you need, passengerspace and capacity for storing the necessary equipmentthat a lot of people take when they travel. Crossovers andsmall compacts are fine but wheelchair and scooter usersneed to be cautious when buying a vehicle. For thosereaders like Simona in the Auto Industry, I would recom-mend that you align your dealership with a reputableNMEDA dealer so you can answer those mobility ques-tions from your clients when they come up. As the carindustry changes a whole new set of mobility challengescrop up. Follow this magazine though out the New Yearfor new solutions and products

Q. I continue to get notices from Chrysler informingme that my warranty is about to expire on my 2007van. Is it worth buying the extended warranty? I onlyhave 27,000 miles on my van now and with the cost ofnew vans it does not look like I will buy another oneanytime soon. Clara S.-VA.A. Who has NOT been inundated with phone, text andtweet messages alerting us to the fact that our car warran-ty will soon expired? While we may be tired of the per-sistent nagging it does make sense to evaluate the need.Beware that most all of those notices pertain to only thechassis. Owners of wheelchair vans would not think ofletting their warranty run out if it covers the conversionequipment. With the high cost of door motor replace-ments, ramp motor replacements and kneel systems Iwould advise you to 1) make sure your warranty coversthis equipment and 2) keep it current. If you do not haveany coverage left on your conversion equipment, seek areputable NMEDA dealer that sells this type of warrantyand purchase it. CAUTION: Read the fine print! Knowwhat you are buying, how convenient it is to get your vanrepaired and what tow or courtesy van service is included.Your chassis warranty is a different matter. If you areplanning on keeping your van a long time as you men-tioned, I would get a combo chassis/conversion warranty.If you are considering keeping your van only 4-5 years,extending the existing warranty may not be a wise invest-ment. Now for those readers that are considering a vanpurchase, negotiate some type of warranty in the deal. Ifthe seller is not willing to offer it, then your assumptioncan only be that there may be problems coming in thevery near future and you better plan for repair cost.

Q. The government is calling for fuel efficient vehi-cles, which means smaller and lighter weight. They areeven talking about surcharges and penalties for driv-ing larger cars. What are we in the handicapped com-

VECTOR INDUSTRIES CELEBRATES 40 YEARSWhat began with some parents wanting to havesomething for their special children to do after highschool eventually became a sheltered workshop busi-ness that has been in operation for over 40 years. In1969 the Waynesboro Workshop began operating inthe basement of the old Waynesboro City Library. Ayear later Valley Workshops was formed and includ-ed Waynesboro Workshop, the Staunton Workshop,the Buena VistaWorkshop and laterthe CovingtonWorkshop.

In 1972 the ARC ofAugusta donated twoacres for a newbuilding which wasconstructed in 1973.In 1987 theWaynesboro ValleyWorkshop becameVector Industries and a year later a new warehouseand office space were added. Through the past 40years Vector Industries has grown from sevenemployees to over 100. In fact, one employee,Ingold Hahn, has been with Vector the entire 40years! Overall, Vector has 19 employees with overtwenty years of experience.

Throughout Vector’s existence its purpose has beento give people with diverse disabilities the opportuni-ty to earn a living, gain dignity and develop skills,self-worth and pride. Vector’s mission has been toemploy and train persons with diverse disabilities toenable them to reachtheir potential as pro-ductive communitymembers.

Although VectorIndustries is a not forprofit, it operates likea business. It trainspeople to followproper work rulesand good businesspractices. Employeesare evaluated onattendance, safety,quality, productivity, teamwork and other businessrequirements. Vector is extremely proud of the safe-ty, quality and customer service records that theemployees have produced as a team. For example,they are approaching four years without a lost timeaccident, over two years with only one customer

quality complaint and almost two consecutive yearsof delivering product to the customer on the datethey requested it.
