located. You can go for the trail right up along the road which offers a great view of the valley. The other good trail to go to is called Bear Lake trail or something like that. It will take you to view those high mountains. The trailhead is on the south side, I believe it is from the Aspen street. This is a very beautiful city and worths a return trip.

10/8,9 at Durango Landmark motel 303-259-1333 1-800-252-8853 3030 Main Ave *** This hotel is ok. It is located along Hy550 and there are many hotels in the area. I think the price is too high. The outside is average, but the inside is quite nice. =============================================================== ---Hiking trips Mt. Audoburn (8/12/95) To get to this trail, you go to Braind Lake area. The latter can be reached from Nederland on #72 north, less than one mile north of Ward. You need to pay $3 (good for five days) to enter the park. Once in Braind Lake area, park your car for the Mitchell Lake. The trailhead is on the northeast corner of the parking lot. This trail starts from about 10,500 ft and went up to about 13,200 ft. Two- thirds of the trail is above the tree line. Not steep, but rather long. Near the top, good view of the whole area. You are near the top of almost everything. The last leg is claiming on rocks. Long Lake, Lake Isabelle and Pawnee Pass (8/13/95) Also in the Braind Lake area, but park your car for the Long Lake. The two lakes are easily accessible, first one is only 1/4 mile, and the next is 2 1/2 miles from the trailhead. The two lakes are all very beautiful. I suggest that you make an effort going to Pawnee Pass. The trail all the way to Lake Isabelle raises hardly more than 400 feet. After you turn into the trail heading for Pawnee Pass, it goes up steadily. You hike along a stream with beautiful flowers and splashing white water. You can see Lake Isabelle along the path from time to time. The dark green color of the water as seen through rugged rocks is breathtaking. I did not reach the Pawness Pass, but stopped at the top of a mountain which is rather flat once you are there. You can have a real good rest there. Green Mountain (8/19/95) This morning it was cloudy. The hike startes from the Gregory Canyon road. The first part is to find the trail for Saddle Rock. It takes about 35 minutes to get to Saddle Rock. After that the trail went down somewhat and then just follow the trail to the top of the Green mountain at 8100 ft. On the top there is a big rock and on top of the rock there is a small pile of rocks stacked up. The top of the pile there is piece of round metal indicating all the high mountains that can be seen from there. It was cloudy so these peaks were not seen. It is a good trail. Bear Mountain (8/20/95) This is the most strenuous hike I have done in the Boulder area. I did this with Jeff Wu. We started at the parking lot at NCAR. Take the trail through the Mesa trail till the trail head which is actually about 30 minutes from the parking lot. Once in the trail, this is a continuous steep climb. The view along the way is good but great one is there only when you are near the top. Need good hiking shoes because of the steep trail. The top is at 8450 ft and the climb from the base is about 2500 ft. It took us less than two hours going up,

and about one and one-half hours to return. Mt. Sanitas This one you go west along Mapleton Ave. and park the car at the trailhead which is just away from the residential area. Once you enter the hiking area, there are two paths. The one to your right is along the valley and is not steep. You can walk or jog uphill. At the ned of this path, you can hike up toward Mt. Sanitas. This portion of the path is rather steep. The alternative path is to go left once you enter the hiking area. This path takes you up immediately and rises steadily along the ridge. The trail is moderate in difficult. Behind Red Rock The Red Rock area near the canyon road can be accessed from the canyon road through the downtown area, also from the Mapleton street as in the trailhead of Mt. Sanitas. There is an extensive trail behind the Red Rock (meaning toward the west). The trail winds along above the canyon road and offers good view of the road and the Boulder Creek (which is side by side with the canyon road). The trails goes up and down which eventually reaches the top of the local mountains. At the end it reaches some dirt road accessible from the Sunshine highway (Mapleton turns into this road). It took me 45 minutes to get there. Foothill trails (early June and 10/1/95) The trailhead is in the northern part of Boulder. The parking lot is to the right after hw36 merges with hw94 (28th street and Broadway). From the parking lot go to the west through a tunnell. This trail has few trees along the way, it offers great view of the north and the Boulder reservior. Gregory Canyon This one starts from the foothill of the Flagstaff road. It offers you the opportunity to go up to Flagstaff mt and then you can come down from there along another path. Great for an hour. ****Good Places to go *** Boulder Creek The good part is from Broadway heading up. Many activities. The one I like most is to drive up along the canyon road and park the car somewhere up. You can then walk or jog along the trail, with the view of the rocks along the two sides of the canyon-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope that you are sleeping well at this time after the emotional telephone conversation. I want to sort out what I went through in the last few days, for you as well as for me. By writing it down can help me clarify things which escaped me during the conversation, and for future references. The long period started with the hiking to Jade Mt(JM) on the evening of May 17. We took the bus at 11:30pm, down the highway thru Jia-I to the base of JM. It was just about the time for the sun to come out. The road to the JM national park is quite good. We are for the hiking. The 75 of us, with me and Jiang the only two senior citzen (the rest are all in their 20's) started the hiking at about 8am. The first part is a paved road of a distance of 2.4km. Then the real hiking started. It

was a rather nice trail of a distance of 8.5km to the cabin where we are to spend the evening. This road is very nice since it is situated along a beautiful valley. It is not too steep and no sheer drop which is what I am afraid. The group was divided into 7 smaller groups and each small group acts as a unit. We hiked together and everything else together. Each small group carries their own supplies--food, cooking utensils. Being the most senior person I was not asked to carry anything except for the things of my own use. The climb was not too difficult for me except that I really hate to carry things on my back. I realized later how heavy the stuff other people were carrying. They are about 20 kg! We arrived at the cabin at about 1pm which has the elevation of 3525m. (We started at about 2600m). Nothing more to do at that time but then I developed the most severe headache of my life for the next five hours. There was no place for me to lie down since other people have already taken over. I was drifting in and out and I was afraid that I was to get sick. There were quite a few people having the same headache. Jiang was pale with pain and I probably looked the same. I was very tired and weak-- I did not eat enough for the long hike since I was not used to such long hiking carrying things on my back. I should have brought more energy intensive foods for the trip -- I learned this time. Anyway at about 5:30pm the dinner was cooked. It was a very decent one and it is kind of fun to see all the cooking done in front of the small opening in front of the cabin. It was a very nice "community" and the students in charge are indeed doing all the work. They expected us just to enjoy. After the dinner (the appetite was not that great) I went to sleep immediately. I woke up at 12:30 am to find out the tiny space between my two neighbors ( I shared a blanket with Jiang) and I was awake. I felt almost impossible to breathe in such a tiny confinement. Each person got up at 2:30am to have some breakfast-- french toast and scrambled egg! I made my own coffee with the coffee bag I brought with me. Then it comes to the real hiking. We headed for the top at 3:30am in the midst of a clear sky. Never saw so many stars. There are stars and mountains and nothing else. Again we hiked as a unit. It is dark so each person has a flashlight. It was indeed a great sight to see a small column of lights along the winding path going up. The hike is slow since some were not in good health. I was ok when I got up but then my headache is completely gone and I felt great and really enjoyed. We did not move fast enough since we need to wait for the slower members in the group. We got to the top at about 5:30 am but the sun is already partially up. There are peaks after peaks in all directions below us. The clouds are below us. The mountain ranges are here and there. I have never seen Taiwan so beautiful!

Page 7: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

We headed back for the cabin at 6:15 am. Then I got to see better the path we covered in the dark. It was not as scary as I had expected. At 9am we started the long walk back. The amazing thing is to find out how much food and what kind of stuff the kids were bringing with them! Our team has one big cabbage. Other teams I have seen watermelons. I saw them eating honeydew-type melons at the top. They cooked some hot ginger-soup at the top. It was indeed fun to spend two days with these young kids. There are about 15 girls, two in my unit--both are girl friends of other members. They did all quite ok. After the exhausting long walk -- mostly from carrying so much stuff on your back, we arrived at the bus at 1pm. On the way back the bus took the New Central Highway, which is from JM through Nantou and ended at Yui-Li. I arrived my apartment at 9:15pm Sunday. I first called my eldest brother about the situation of my Mom who was admitted to the hospital the Thursday before. She was still doing very well on Tuesday the same week. I was told that she had great pains that Saturday (the time when I had my severe headaches) and on Sunday she was not moving much but appeared to be very sick. After my shower I got a call from Shih-Jay that his father was to go to check my Mom out and I should be ready for the next call. I told him that I was rather tired and I wanted to go to sleep but he should be able to wake me up should he call me again. I went to bed at 10:30pm and to be waken up at 11:40pm. The msg is to come home! I went to collect the laundries that had been dried by that time ( I was planning to collect them the next morning) and headed for home at 12:05am, May 20. We arrived home at 1:50 am. Mom was lying down in the my 3rd brother's home on a piece of flat wood elevated to the height of the bed. She was fully dressed. She was still breathing but nothing else. All of the families were there. Ie-Hong's whole family came home by hiring a taxi from Taipei at a cost of about 3000NT$. They had to leave early before the traffic control in Taipei started for the inauguration of President Lee. Everyone was waiting for that last minute and how she suffered the last few days were told among ourselves. I was tired so I went to take a nap at about 4:30 am. I got up at 6am but she was still breathing. Not everyone was in that room after dawn. At about 9:40am someone came to the room where my father and some of us (in my parents house) were sitting saying that the last moment was coming. I helped my father over so I arrived there to find out that her breathing had stopped. She lied peacefully there then. My elderest brother had to departed that morning very

early to take a special train with his entourage of people to Tao-Yun to participate in the Lee's ceremony. He came home at about 4pm to get things taken care. The whole thing has been planned between my two elder brothers. That is indeed fortunate for me since there are so many things to do! I was told to do this and that and helping making decisions here and there, but nothing major. Well, then the tent was set up in front of the house. A refirgerator was moved in and her body was put in there. A small altar was set up and "sai-Gong" was called in to start all the chanting. Helpers from the neighbors prepared all the special white clothes for all of us to put on and activities involving us started at 3pm. It went on and off until 10 pm that evening. Fortunately it was not too hot and the weather actully was very good. Then small rains started at about 9:30pm. Ie-Hong, Jing-Dong and myself volunteered to be the "guardians' for the body for the rest of the evening. I took the fist shift but was too tired after about 3am. Besides it is kind of spooky to be all alone in a rather cloudy and chilly morning. I took my turn for sleep at 3am for three hours. I woke up to find out that Shih-Jay came at about 5:30am to take the turn. By 7am the down pours started and we needed to do something to keep the whole area dry. By 9am some people started coming in. An outdoor altar was set up for "non-relatives" to pay tributes. The floor wreaths started coming in and some visitors also showing up. The Fung-Shui (wind-water) guy came also and after a few more discussions, the dates for putting the body in the coffin was set for May 26, the cremation for May 27 and the open ceremony (farewell party as they called it) for June 4. I went with two other brothers to select the vessel for the ashes after the cremation. It was made of jade and costed about 30,000NT$. (There are others which are about twice as expensive) I left at 6pm for Hsin-chu with the others in Changhwa area to take care of the rest. I have to give a talk again this Saturday so I will go back home again after that. More to come after it happened. This is just to give you an idea what was to go through. My brother told me that it will cost us about 500,000-1,000,000 NT$ for the whole thing. Fortunately we have so many brothers to share the cost! At the day of the ceremony it was anticipated that 400-500 people will show up. This is Taiwan-- they do it the local way. Nobody is to change it for their parents even if they do not like it.

Trips 1997 --------------------------- trip report to Las Vegas 3/26 - 3/31/97 fly SW airlines round trip far $129 --------------------------- The distance between airport and the Strip is quite short--about 5 miles only. It may be advisable to rent the car from the hotel if it is not needed right away.

We stayed in Rio for the first three nites at $69 for weekdays and $95 for Friday nite. This hotel is located away from the Strip. Acess to the Strip is by their shuttle bus or by your own car. The room is nice -- they are all suites. The world buffet (8.95 for dinner) and the seafood buffet (I think it is $18.95) are supposed to be quite nice.

On the last day we stayed at the new Monte Carlo. It is not as gloomy (for the non-gambler) as other hotels. The lobby is nice and you can stay away from the casino if you do not intend to go there. The buffet here is not as extensive but quite good too. It appears to be somewhat higher class.

For the show, the EFX at MGM Grand is a MUST. At $70 per ticket but well worth of it. The other show--crazy girls. It is topless and played at Rivera. Not so much fun.

Our main activities are outdoors. Day 1 we went to Red Rock Canyon. Only about 35 minutes to the west from the Strip. The rocks are quite interesting. The trail called Ice Bottom is along the canyon. It is a good short hike. The red rocks in the first two stops are quite good. Our Day 2 was the trip to Hoover Dam. You can park at the garage on the Nevada side (for $2) or go to the Arizona side for free. I recommend a walk across the dam and take the guided tour down to see the bottom. A black canyon river curise probably will be very good but we did not do it. It is about $65 per person.

The portion of the trip above was taken with the Lai's family. It was great to have their company.

Our Day 3 trip was a drive to the Valley of Fire. It is the first state park of Nevada. Follow I15 north and exit on 169 (the exit is not conspicuous, exit when you see the sign for Valley of Fire). Once you enter the west entrance you can stop and look around. But it is better that you drive directly to the Visitor Center (you can pay the day use fee there -- $4 per car and do not try to avoid it since they can come and check). After the Visitor Center go toward the inside park. Drive all the way to the end where there are beautiful rocks. You can also stop along the way and take short or long hikes. Every rock is so beautiful and you should spend a day here to explore the whole region. Make sure that you have full tank of gas before you leave LV.

Page 10: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

After Valley of Fire we headed for Death Valley. We took I95 north to Beatty and then entered the park by turning to 190. A better route is to turn south at Lathrop Walls to 127 and then change to 190. Furnance Creek ranch and camping area is near the junction of 190 and Badwater Road. Or you can take 160 from Vegas and then Stateline Road and then 190. The last one is the shortest and the sign is clear, but the route is boring.

OK, so what to see at Death Valley. First you can stay at Furnance Creek Ranch for $105 a nite (The Inn is in the $250 range) or if you want you may pursue the camping possibility. There are glocery store, restaurent and gas station there but expect to pay high prices. You should go to the sand dune in the late afternoon or early morning. This is located about 17 miles north of the hotel. You should also visit Devil's golf course, Badwater, the Artist loop, and natural bridge. All of them are along the Badwater Road. No, actually you should stop at the Visitor Center first to get the map and ask for information. They also provide all sort of programs in the afternoon and evening. A two-nite stay is probably better and it is better to make the trip before the end of March. It was getting to the 90's on March 30 when we visited. There are a few other sights which are quite interesting but we have to do in a rush.

Valley of Fire State Park

The vivid cliffs of fiery red and startling white sandstone at this 36,000-acre desert state park attest that nature is the universe's master sculptor. Millions of years of assault by the elements has resulted in a breathtaking display of natural arches, bridges, intricately-patterned cliffs and vertical formations. The wind and water are responsible for the crazy quilt of textures that adorn the 600 million-year-old rocks. The sandstone, ancient petroglyphs, rock paintings and designs mark the existence of the Anasazi, an early Indian civilization. A seven-mile round trip hiking trail to Silica dome and a three-mile loop to Fire Canyon offer scenic views and chances to spot sheep, burros and antelope.

About 60 miles northeast on Interstate 15.

------------------------------- Arizona trip dates: June 1997 for ten days flew to Phoenix and then a car Tucson: Sabino good canyon, take the bus up but nice to walk down Sonora desert great for closeup of desert eco and saguaro take the route which goes by Saguaro National park west Mission San Xavier Del ABC is mostly hispanic heritage Downtown Tuscon area is very take an evening walk

Sedona: A very beautiful Rock city indeed take Oak Creek canyon from Flagstaff A good idea if you can spend a nite there or two Many good looking rocks Tlaquepaque shopping center is good for looking nice arts

drive to Enchantment resort, in Boynton canyon, where you can take a hike with great views. Airport mesa drive is great too.

North Rim, grand canyon. The drive to North Rim from Flagstaff is great but the north rim itself is not as exciting as the south rim. Can stay overnite near Navaja Bridge. The Marble canyon lodge is a good place. From there you can visit the Navaja Bridge which is over the Colorado river. You can drive to Lee^Rs ferry where all the boats are launched for the rafting on the Colorado. The road to Lee^Rs ferry is very good with great canyon sights. Try a short hike along the small canyon which feeds the Colorado. They are very narrow. Of course watch out for the weather. The North Rim is very isolated and TOO far. If you go, see if you can stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge. You need to reserve well ahead of time. You should eat there for the dinner.

The South Rim, Grand Canyon It is very crowded. The view from the rim is great, but not that different after you have been there for a while. Make sure that you go down. I tried the Bright Angel trial. It is very easy. You can reach Indian Garden in 4.5 miles and Flat point where you can see Colorado river below in 6.0 miles. Of course you need to come back UP. If you are in good shape, I think you can do a day trip down to the river and back. Or plan well ahead to stay overnite in Phanton Ranch. It is a good idea to stay in the park at least for one nite. Hotel reservation should be made very early. The IMAX Tusayan is a good place to see Grand canyon from the air.

Monument Valley National Park Fascinating rock formation on the Indian reservation. Too far to make it worthwhile. It may be a good stop if you want to continue on to Uta.

Jerome: A layered city. Well worth to spend half a day. Can be combined with the trip to or from between Pheonix and Sedona.

Scotsdale: Embassy Suite there is great. The rate is low in the summer. The city itself is also interesting

Trip to Big Sur

12/26-28, 1997 -------------------- This is a long weekend trip. karin, Cade and two of us left Fremont in the morning. We took 880 and then 101 to San Luis Obispo where we stayed the first nite. After checkin, we drove to Prismo Beach. The pier area is quite nice with a few interesting shops. The most interesting part is to pay $5 to enter the Prismo Beach where you can drive your car ont the beach. But park your car half way and then go for the big sand dune. It is gorgeous, especially in the late afternoon. The evening we spent in downtown San Luis Obispo. It is a good place to stroll, with many good shops and cafes.

The next morning we went to Morro Bay to see the Morro Rock. Well, I would skip this town. We then settled at the Best Western Cavelier Inn in San Siemeon. It has good access to the beach and you can stroll south and then came back jogging along highway 1. It is a good thing to do near sunset. The afternoon we went to see the Hearst castle. The IMMax on the castle before the tour is good. Amazing that someone can be so wealthy.

The last day was a drive north from San Siemeon on HY1. Many vista points provide good sights of the rugged coastal lines. We stopped at Pffier Beach where you need to pay $5 to get in. A good place to have some fun. Then we took a hike at Pffier State Park. Entry fee is $6. The hike to Valley View trial is good. On the way back we saw migrating whales, but it is very far away. We made a brief stop at Carmel. IT is a very high-class town. The shops and the town are all very impressive. Then we took 156 and then 101 and then 880 back to Fremont. The dinner was at Black Angus steak house in Fremont. Great meal, especially the pork ribs that I ordered.:q

The Big Sur area is ragged but you do not see as much by just driving along. I think it would be better if one can stroll along. But to do that it may be better just do it on the northern part of the Big Sur. The town of Carmel is also very interesting. We have only an hour to walk around in the mall area, but a return visit is probably desirable in due time.

note: the Point Rye national seashore is good for whale watching from Dec to March. half-moon bay is good point for sea fishing trips.

Emil found out that our ticket was for the same period but in March. Last

minute effort solved the problem. At Ohare we found out that the rental car

was also reserved for a month later. Franatic phone calls later solved the problem.

Stayed at the UC faculty club. Nice and relatively cheap.

Discussion with UF did not go too far. He is physically in good shape but

attention span is limited. Saturday morning had a tour of downtown Chicago with

Toru. The next day visiting the ethnic neighborhood of Chicago, including the

Swedish, Lebanon, Indian and Chinese. Then a drive to Northwestern U. It was

a great campus at great location. Dinner in Chinatown, 55th street near the

train line has a few restaurents too.

Trip to Fremont during 1998 springbreak

Date: 3/20 -3/29

The main goal of this trip is to deliver our 1993 Toyota Cambry to

Karin. We started at about 8:30 am on I-70 until we reach Salina. From there

we drove north until we reached I-80.

The strech of I-80 in western Nebraska is nearly along the North Platte

river. It is the migratory season for many species of birds and on our way

over we saw many species on the ponds or in the sky. Too bad there is no time

to stop. The first day we covered about 650 miles and we stopped at Larami,

Wyoming. This is the home to the University of Wyoming and it is in a valley

Page 15: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

surrounded by the mountains. We stayed at the Comfort Inn near the University

and took a look at the reasonably interesting campus.

The second day was a short drive to Salt Lake City, about 400 miles away.

The drive is quite interesting, with snows on the mountain tops, but I would

not say that there are places worth stopping. Once arriving SLC, we first

visited the City Hall on the 4th street and then headed out for the Mormon

Temple square. Immediately a "sister" came to volunteer as a guide. The

buildings were quite interesting but we were not converted. We then went

to take a quick tour of University of Utah. After that we headed for the

Pioneer Park and hiked up the eastern mountain range which offered a great

view of the valley. We stayed at the Fairfield Inn west of the airport. It

was not a great place but anything in town is full or too expensive.

The next day we headed for Antelope Island in the Salt Lake. It is about

45 minutes drive north of the city. It is very peaceful and quite empty

and it is great for a leisurely walk. The Baffalo point is certainly nice. The

other trails were closed. In the afternoon we headed for the Temple square

again to watch "Legacy"-- an IMMax movie about the westward migration

of the Mormons. Quite educational. The everning was used for another hike.

We follow the road toward the capitol building but headed up till

you can not go up any more and found another trail which leads to

a high point which offers the direct view of the Capitol building and

the State street. This point was climbed by Brigham Young when he reached

SLC.

The next day is a direct drive to Berkeley. We had to cover about 750 miles.

It turns out not a big deal at all when you can averaged about 83 miles

Page 16: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

per hour. The stretch in Utah is great. Nevada is not as striking.

The drive passing the Tahoe region is quite spectacular. The heavy snow

still covers the whole mountain region. After passing that region, the

rich farm valley of the Sacramento region is clear. Boy, it is already spring there!

We arrived Berkely around 5pm local time. A call to Karin and then we headed for

Fremont directly in our own car.

Karin spent Wed and Thursday with us. On Wed we did some shopping and checking

out the Milpitas oriental shopping center. The next day we hiked up the

Mission Peak which is about 2500 ft above sea level. Not bad since we started

probably from 100 ft. You need to go thru all the cow pasture and over two fences.

It was very beautiful this time of the year. Friday everybody was tired so

not much going except for a quick shopping trip. Saturday afternoon went to the

Garden show at cow palace. It was not as exciting as expected.

The return trip was exciting. Once at the airport we were told that our reservation

has been moved to Tuesday instead of Sunday we had. Clearly the reservation office

screwed things up bad. Eventually they put us in the first class but there was

three hours of waiting in twin city. The shuttle bus coming home has no a.c.

and it was delayed for about an hour. Well, this is Kansas!

trip to DC 4/24 - 4/27

This trip was planned for visiting Joe Martinez

to talk to him about my research work. The original plan was to meet him

on Monday 4/27 but it has to be changed since later he has other

commitment. We left at about 8am to catch a US air flight to DC from KC.

Page 17: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

The ticket was $226.

We stayed at the Washington Marriott which is

located at 23th and M st. It was about four blocks from Dupont center

and it is also quite near the Georgetown and also the Rock Creek

parkway. The prepay weekend rate for the room and breakfast is $95.

It is a steal.

Upon arriving on 4/24 we had pizza at Pizzaria Paradiso at 2029 P st. It is a

good place for simple and elegant pizza and sandwich. P street is full

of restaurents. Then we walked to 18th area to have dinner at an

Ethiopean restaurent. We ordered the sampler but it was too much. We

probably should have tried the French food to be discussed later. The

18th street takes us to the Adams-Morgen area which is a hub for all

different ethnic groups.

The next morning we were able to enjoy the full

breakfast.( I had the morning jog before breakfast all the way to the

zoo). The morning we went to the craft show at the National Museum.

There are quite a lot of expensive artwork and one guy was actually a

graduate from KSU. After the show and a quick visit of the M.E. Escher's

work we went to Dupont circle for lunch. The evening we took the subway

to Medical center to meet with Joe Martinez. He showed us around the

area a little bit and then to his house. Then we went to a fish

restaurent in Bethesda. He took us to the hotel.

Sunday morning after the breakfast I discussed with Joe at the hotel

about my work. It was

quite nice since I have the chance to explain the exciting work that I

Page 18: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

have done. In the afternoon we took the walk toward the Mall passing

White House. We stopped by the Natural History museum to look at the

gem, especially the Hope Diamond. Then we walked to Shih-Jay's hotel

which is Henley Park hotel-- on 11th and Mass. behind the convention

center. It is not a great one. Together with his two colleagues we set

out for the Mall, walking all the way from the Capitol to the Lincoln

Memorial. We then went to the Chinese restaurent called City Light of

China which is a terrific place to eat.

There is not much to do on Monday so we went to the zoo and then walked back

to the hotel following

the Rock Creek trail. I was later told that it is not a good idea to do

that since it is not considered to be safe. The return flight was

uneventful except to return to the rainy and cold spring of Kansas.

Well, need to work anyway.

trip to Santa Fe 5/23-5/31--DAMOP

This is a combined business and vacation trip using our new

Toyota Cambry. The passengers are cdl, sml and toru.

On 5/23 we left Manhattan at about 8am. After I70, I135 we took

state 61 passing Hutchison to highway 54. Hwy54 is mostly two lanes

all the way, we stopped at Greenberg in Kansas for lunch at a

Pizza Hut, then passing cities like Hooker in Okalahoma and Texahoma.

There were a few big feeders in Texas where thousands of cows are

in the pens. It is not clear to me that they are for slaughter or

indeed for feeding. The original plan was to take NM104 to go to

Las Vegas, but we got lost in Tucumcari. We ended up driving

toward Santa Rosa and then took Hwy84 to Las vegas. After settling

in Comfort Inn, then we took off for the plaza of Las Vegas. This

city once was the capitol. The city center has a few old houses

and it seems that there are a few tourists passing by. That evening

we have our first New Mexican meal for the trip. It was quite good.

5/24 Left early in the morning before it got too hot. We drove south

along Hwy25 passing Santa Fe. Exit on Hwy22 and then Hwy16, a small

sign points us to Tent Rock. (the sign is not clear at all) Once we

are there it was quite interesting. The erosion of the different soils

create figures that were claimed to be like tents, but actually more

lime penis. Anyway, there are quite a few of them in the area and you

Page 20: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

can climb on them. But the most interesting part is the canyon road

which has very narrow passage and it takes you eventually to a

high point from there you can see the whole world.

We then took 25N passing Santa Fe, 285 and then 502 to Los Almos.

We are to stay two nights at the Adobe Pines B&B. The owner Partin

has a beautiful house overlooking the golf course. It was an elegant

house which took them six years to build. After a brief rest we then

head out for the Bandelier where the fomous Indian ruins are located.

I had been to this place before but now they have very good concrete

foot paths for the visitors--too bad. We then took the hike down

the Rio Grande as suggested by Howard Bryant. The hike is about 5

miles round trip and we were the last to return. There we met one

guy from Phidelphia. This guy is a builder and seems to be very

knowlegeable about the buildings. He talked about how great the Acoma

is and that made us to decide to make a special trip.

5/25 This day was supposed to travel in the Jehmez mountains, the

hwy 4 of N.M. The forest is lining up against the road. We stopped

briefly at spencer hot Spring but did not go into it since we did

not have the appropriate attires. Then we drove down passing

Jehmez Springs, a small town which once was considered to be the

site for the A-bomb site, only later replaced by Los Almos as

insisted by Oppenheimer. The driving is fine but not time for

hiking. We then passed one of the Pueblos where the local was

selling Indian fry bread on the roadside. Eager to test that

culture. We went to one of the stands and there was a half eaten

Page 21: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

one and I thought it was a sampler. I took a small piece and

enjoyed it only to find to my embarassment that it belonged to

one of the customers who was paying for his bread. Well, he did

not complain!

We then head out for Acoma-- 60 miles west of Alburquerque(AB). After

the exit from Hwy40, it was another 15 miles. But it was a good

drive. You are on top of the mesa most of the time to have a

360 view of the highland. Then the road winds into this valley where

another Mesa stands up in the middle. There you go to the visitor

center, paying $8 per person and then a bus will take you for the

guided tour. The mesa used to be inhabited by hundreds of people. But

now only about 30 people living there since there is no

electricity, nor water. It was quite interestin to see how the

houses are built in the Adobe style--similar to the ones in Taiwan

in the good old days! It is a good introduction to that part of the

world.

Then we drove to AB and visited the old town area. There we bought

a reproduction of a painting of R. C. Gorman. Well, he is supposed to

be very famous Inidan and need to read more about his work. The drive back

to Los Almos is long. Today we added 350 miles to the odometer.

5/26 In the early morning I tried to do some jogging at the 7400 ft

level of Los Almos. It is not easy. I ended up walking and

slow jogging in the canyon. There is so much fun, but no time to do

more. Then it is time to pack and head for Tao's.

We took Hwy84, then 68 along the Rio Grande toward Taos. This part

Page 22: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

of the driving is fun and we stopped at the roadside to visit this

old women who used local chili, corn and other stuff to make nice

wreath, and the chili ring. We bought something from her and took the

picture with her --- a very decent old woman. The lunch was

at a cafe near Ranchos de Taos, about 4 miles south of Taos. There we

visited the Adobe church-- a famous one with very ubiqutous design.

Too bad that it was closed in preparation for a funeal. Then we drove

to see Rio Grande gorge bridge-- the second highest one, probably

second to the Royal Gorge in CO. The city of Taos was not as

impressed as I had expected. We did not visit the Pueblo since we

had been to Acoma. On the way back we took the high road, visiting

a few small chuches and stopped at a weaving place to talk to

the owner. In a small town people are fun to visit since they can

always find the time to talk to you.

The high road passes thru the valleys and the mountains. Good view

all the way.

Then we are in Santa Fe.

The evening reception was Palace de Governors.

5/27 official DAMOP meetings

chair a session in the afternoon and then a poster session

5/29 went to canyon road to view some galleries. Too many great and

expensive stuff.

5/30 took the morning off to visit Sandia peak. Drove along hwy14

and passing a few small towns. The peak is still partly covered

by snow. But a short hike along the trail facing AB was quite

Page 23: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

nice.

5/31 Drive another 700 miles coming home. Left 8am and arrived

9:30pm. NM104 from Las Vegas to Tucumcari was great, with a broad

pasture. After entering Kansas we decided to take a tour of the

part of the state that we never have the chance of visiting before.

We first stopped by Dodge City, to take a look of this famous town

but no time for exploring. Then we drove along hwy50 to Great Bend

and then 156 to reach 70. This is the season of harvesting and the

wheat fields which extend miles in every direction glows yellow and

gold in the evening sun. Never seen this wheat country and when

the field is so broad, so flat and so rich in color, you can say

Kansas is at its best!

This trip the car starts with 450 miles on the odometer. When it

enters the garage again it was 2720 miles! This is the second time

we covered more than 2000 miles after that trip to CA in March. Well,

we did with two different Cambry's.

itinerary: left 10:30am on 6/26, stayed with Lin Tseng-Tser of Cherry creek

in Denver. Wu and Jen and their wives came for the dinner.

6/27 attended the wedding of Erica Cocke at their lodge. Only family and

close friends were invited. The reception is at Craftwood hotelin

Manitou Srpings. Stayed at Alpin motel that nite.

6/28 took the car up Pikes Peak and then went to Garden of Gods. Then

jogged on the trails there--great. Stayed at the Gray's Avenue B&B.

Owners Tom and Lee are very nice. It is a large operation and you got

the chance to see many other people.

6/29 en route to Durango via HY160. The scenery became very great after

passing the Wolfcreek pass. Stayed at Inns of Durango at 2900 Main

Street. Packed and ready for the hike with Lew and Enid.

6/30 took the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge rail up at 7:30am and

got off at Needleton at about 10am. Then with the pack hitched, hiked

up toward the Chicago basin. It is about 5 miles and 2500 feet

above the train stop. Found a good camping site which turned out to

be below the lower edge of the Chicago Basin. No matter. It has

great view and quite open.

7/1 got up early and started the hike at a quarter before 7am. Climb

up along a very nice trail with day-hike pack only. After 2 hrs

arrived at the twin lakes. The whole area is covered with snow.

The hiked on the snow toward the Windom peak at 14,082 feet. With

a lot of huffing and puffing we reached my first fourteener at

around noon.(Lew and Enid have done this more than 30 times at

other peaks)

We had the lunch at the peak. Then came down. They went on to the

Sunlight Peak which is quite steep and covered with snow. Since I

do not have the ice axes, I stayed low. It was a difficult crimb as

I was told. The returned to the camp is a long walk, arriving camp

site at 7pm. Another raman for dinner.

7/2 Today Lew and Enid went to climb Eodora peak, another fourteener.

Page 25: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

This peak is also quite exposed and steep so I decided not to

follow. Instead I went up to Coulombine Pass which is about

13,000 ft at the pass. The walk is not strenuous but the view is

fantastic. The first part it follows a canyon and then reached a

broad meadow where the flowers are blooming and the snow are

still covering at the high places. Have my own lunch overlooking the

meadow and the towering mountains around it. The food is not great

(rye bread, cheese and salami) but the view is fantastic -- better

than the rotaing restaurent! On this trip, met a couple from

Madison on their 5 days backpacking trip and another guy from Boulder

doing the same thing but on opposite direction.

I returned to the camp at around 3:30pm. Since the water in the

plastic bottle was warm enough (water from the stream is melted ice

water!), I went for a much needed shower. First wash the hair and

then stripped down to wash under the bright sun. It was very nice,

but try to take a shower with about two gallons of water.

Another raman for dinner--with canned tuna.

7/2 time to return to the civilization. Pack the tent and leave nothing

behind, the walk to the train station is about three hours. Since

the long weekend follows, there are many hikers heading for the

mountains we have justed left. The same train picked us up and

we arrived Durango at 5pm. First thing is to head for the shower.

After a good prime rib dinner at the Christina (at 3400 Main), we

are back to the civilization!

7/3 started the long drive home (stopped for speeding at Durango after

Page 26: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

5 minutes -- but only a warning). Covered almost 800 miles in 13 hours

to arrive home at 8pm. It was tiring but not a difficult drive.

epilog: This is the first backcountry hiking in my life. It was very

enjoyable. You need to have the good physical shape to be able to

hike to places where there are few people. Then the whole nature is

yours to enjoy, not to share. But you need to know how to survive in

such isolation, without the comfort of the normal daily life. On the

other hand, the nature can be so pretty. You woke up in the morning and

stared in owe at the great beauty around you. Your need is so small

when you are basked in gorgeous surrounding. Watching the mountains at

different hours and the shape, the color and the contrast are always

changing. Great experience and wish to do more often.

This trip totaled 1800 miles on my new Cambry,

Canadian Rockies

7/11 Left Manhattan at 12pm. Run into a big rain storm bfore reaching

Topeka, arrived at satellite parking at 3:30pm. The waiting at the ticket

line is slow. Have had more than 3 hrs of waiting at MSP and pizza for

dinner.

The departure from MSP to Calgary was a disaster. When we were at the

ticket counter the lady joked that we might have to change the gates three

times before we got to go. Indeed she was right. First an hour before the

scheduled departure, it was announced a gate change. After we got there for

Page 27: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

about 20 minute there was another gate change. We then entered the plane

except to be told that there was a delay in loading the luggage, then there

was an oil leak. After in the plane for an hour, we were told to take

another plane at another gate--three changes as predicted.

Arrived at Calgary airport hotel at 12:30am only to find that the Lai's

were not in the room. Well, we did not get the suite. So each family in

a separate room, except that the ac in the room is making the hissing

sound and it is not possible to sleep. At 2:30 am moved to another room.

What a start to get this vacation! It turns out everything is almost perfect

from there on.

7/12

Arrived at Banf around noon. After lunch we checked in the 2Bd apt

of Douglas Fir Resort. The room has two levels and rather spacious. Without

map we wandered around Cascade Gardens and eventually ended up in the

Banf Spring Hotel area where you can see the Bow river passing by with

Bow Falls. We then walked back to the city around the river bank--a

highly recommended walk.

7/13

Got up really early jogged and then hiked up the Tunnell Mountain Summit.

Thisshould be the first hike when arriving Banf since it allows you to get a

good view of the township and the interesting place to go.

The team is to visit Sunshine meadows. From the parking lot we decided to

hike up. It was a bad idea since the meadow starts after the 5 km hike. It was

raining but the hike was a pleasant one. Turns out to be the most

primitive path for the whole trip. On the return we took hw1A--the Bow valley

Page 28: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

highway, and stopped to see Johnston Canyon. It is a good one but we did

not venture beyond the lower canyon since we were hungry then. We learned

to pack lunch with us the rest of the trip. You always need to eat something.

After the afternoon rest, the whole four of us went up to Tunnell Mountain

Summit again.

7/14 Today we were at Lake Louise.

Did not get there early enough so we were not able to see the reflection.

The lake itself indeed is very beautiful, sourround by mountains on three

side. Opposite to the famous hotel is the Victoria Glacier and the lake

has this deep blue-green water. The highlight is to move away from the

crowd after spending an hour in the hotel checking out the layout of this

famous hotel. We chose the trail to Lake Agnes where there is a tea

house and you can get quite reasonable snack for lunch there. Do not

stop there, continue on around the lake and then head for a pass toward

the Big Beehive trail. The view from there is fantastic. Go to the end of

the trail there is another roofed rest place. You can see Lake Louise and

the hotel from there, and the view of the Victoria Glacier is magnificient.

You can make a circular return loop as you decend and keep to the trail on

your left.

We stopped at the Moraine Lake on the way back. The lake is as good

as Lake Louise and you can have good view of the ten peaks. Do not have

enough time for another hike so this has to be done at a later date.

7/15

This day is spent in Banf. First drove to the Upper Hot Spring parking

Page 29: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

lot. Then hike up all the way to the Sulfur Mountain , from there you can

further walked to Sanson Peak. The walk is fun but you do see the gondola

all the time. Came down on the free ride. After the rest, we headed for

93 southwest direction into Kootenay National park. We visited the Marble

Canyon. This one is small, but very deep and you can see it well. The

next stop is Painted Pots. Here the soil is very colorful. The walk to

both places are very enjoyable. Did not venture further down the the radium

Hot Spring -- it is way too far.

7/16

Checked out Douglas Fir Resort and headed north along Coulmbia Ice

Parkway. Major stop is at Bow Summit and Peyto Lake. The Lake is quite

nice but there are too many people at the observation station especially

when the tour bus arrives. You can hike to the Bow Summit. There are many

beautiful wild flowers along the way. Have lunch at the peak and you have a

good view of Bow lake too. Another path is to stay close to Peyto Lake.

There is also a trail there which offers a great view of Peyto Lake.

Then we head for the Coulombia Ice Field. Join the tour bus and then

visited the Icefield itself. The Athabasca Glacier can be reached by their

special bus and you got to walk on it and collect drinking water melted from

the ten thousand year old glacier. It is retrieving and will be gone in

a few hundred years.

After settling down in the hotel there we then went to the Parker ridge which

is a trail about 10 km south of the visitor center. The hike again is quite

pleasant and you can see the Glacier there at a distance.

The visitor center has good eating facility and a stay there is well

Page 30: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

worth of it.

7/17

In the morning we hiked the Wilcox Pass. You have good view of the

Parkway but at the top you can see many segments of the Coulombia

Icefield. There are quite a few mountain goats up there. A recommended hike

too.

Further up north, stopped at the Athabasca Falls and then 93A to Japser

and on the way had our first sight of a black bear.

We stayed at Angels on Aspen, B&B. It was a wonderful place.

7/18

Today we hiked the Sulfur Skyline trial. Have a good view of many

mountain peaks. Then had our only bath at Miette Hot Springs. On the

way back, stopped at a wild river which is very shallow and you can

walked a long way into it. Then the sight of one huge elk grazing by

a roadside lake. The decorative horn is indeed an exaggeration.

7/19

Today we hike Cavell Meadows Loop. Here you have a good view of

the Angel Gracier and on the way up there are beautiful wild flowers.

The mistake was that we stopped for lunch too early without hiking to

the even higher peaks. We have to come down since we wanted to visit

the much talked about Maligne Canyon. It turns out this canyon is not

as good as Marble canyon. Too many people and too much fenced in.

7/20

Today we first went to canoing at Pyramid Lake. Unfortunately the

Lai's got a turnover and they all got wet. The water was cold. No matter,

Page 31: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

in the afternoon we rent a bike and rode following the Athabasca river

and came back to make a stop at Jasper Park Lodge for drinks. The ride

was great.

7/21

Still do not have enough of the mountain views. So we took the return

trip to see the mountain peaks one more time. Then reaching Lake

Louise we headed for Moraine Lake and hike to Larch Valley and then onto

Sentinel Pass. We have enjoyed so much hiking and just cannot get away

without climing it if there is a peak in sight.

Only after 4pm did I realized that I did not have hote reservation

at Calgary, instead it was at a tiny town north of the city. It was

too bad since there is little to do there. The end of the trip is just

as unexciting as the beginning, but everything in between has been great.

7/22 Everybody goes his/her own way home and I flew to Vancouver then

to SF before my flight to Taipei. The calgary-vancouver flight has good

view of the mountains.

The return trip to MCI was rescheduled to July 31.

This trip started from the flight to SF from Calgary via Vancouver. Karin

picked me up at SFO and then we went out jogging around the lake near her

apartment in Fremont. After the dinner at the Outback which was not that great, she

sent me back to the airport for the Eva flight to Taipei which left at 1:30am.

The flight was only half full --indeed the Asia Flu has some effect. The seat 27D is greatsince it has a lot of leg room in front. Arrived Taiwan in the early morning and

Shih-Jay picked me up and settled at the guest house inside Tsinghua.

The next two days attended the meeting hearing some talks and presented one of

my own the next day. Then use Shih-Jay's car to go back to Homei to see my

father but stayed at Yau-Dong's place. It turns out that Sunday evening was

used as an occasion for my father's 90th birthday at a restaurent in Changhwa.

Came back to Hsinchu for the last two days to do some work. It was hot and

humid and it is more comfortable to stay inside. But I was able to do my morning

job in the tracks in Tsinghwa.

The return trip was a good flight too. Again 27D is a good seat. Spent the night

at Karin's place but changed the flight to return home the next day.

There was a mixup on the flight too. They made the change of my flight to August

31. I have to insist and they eventually yielded.

3:15pm -4:32pm Chicago-KCI UA1929

This trip starts at 8am. Shu mei drove me to kci, in a big fog with litle visibility.

Her flight on 9/18 was delayed by an hour and we ended up at the Montreux station at

about the same time. We were picked up by Mrs. Lee and aftr refreshing up

the Chang's and us went for a walk along Lake Geneva from the apartment of

the Lee's at Villeneuve to Montreux. We had the dinner at the Bavarian-- or

something like that. They had jumbo shrimps, but I had the delicious perch

from the lake. We walked back in the darkness.

Trip to see Matterhorn

This trip took place on 9/19/98, Saturday. It was a beautiful day with

complete blue sky. Mrs.Lee, the Chang's and us drove from Montreux,

passing cities like Sion, Sierra and then we stopped the car at Tarsh

from there we took the train to Zermatt. We switched to another train to

Gunergrat which offered the great view of the Matterhorn and other

peaks, including the highest mt. Rosa, in Switzerland. S.M. and I walked

down from the top, but we picked up the train at Lappel...

We had to share the path with the foul-smelling goats, but we took many

photos with them. After returning to Zermatt, we walked in this

pictureque town, and wishing for a quick return trip. On the return, I

was the driver, first time for me to drive in Europe. The late dinner

was at Mrs.Lee's home.

Trip to Jungfrau

taken on Sept 21

We left Montreux at 8:20am,drove thru Bern and then parked the car at the

town of Zweilatshinen. The train ticket costs Sf155 per person. We took

Page 34: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

the line passing Lauterbrunnen then changed at kl.Scheidegg.This is a

very nice town to spend a nite or two in the future for its excellent

hiking. We then took the train to Jungfroujoch. Had the lunch there at

the Crystal restaurent, the highest restaurent in Europe. The short walk

outside the restaurent is fine

and the ice sculpture also worths a short visit. The highlight should be

the gracier hike which is next to the elevator for Sphnix observation.

The retun to Grindelwald which is a charming little town. Didn't spend

much time there. A good place to visit again too..

Paris on Sept 22,1998

Gare Lyon then transfer to Gare Montparnasse. The transfer was confusing

so we took the taxi, costing F65. The old coins do not work any more. Along

the way, the TGV train zipped thru the flat land of western France,

passing the bigger cities like Rennes, St. Brieuce, Guingamp, Morlaix and

then Brest. The trip is to take about four hours. The hotel we will stay

is called Hotel de Oceania, at 82 rue de Siam. It is within the walking

distance.

9/23-25 meeting in Brest-- ok meeting

Paris trip on 9/26/98 9/27/98

We arrived Paris from Brest via TGV. After settling at the hotel

Tuileries, we went on to Louve. The new pyramid adds a lot to the museum

which we visited many years ago. But it is more fun to go to the

Tulieres garden and then to the oblisk at the Concord. We then walked to

the Eifel Tower and took the elevator up to the top observation floor.

The view of the city in the night is great. We then walked back to the

Page 35: 1995-98-tripReport - Kansas State University · The stay in the guest house in RIKEN is very nice. The trip ends up with a visit of the Photon Factory where the host if Yoshiro Azuma.

hotel, passing by the underpass where Dianna was killed a year ago. We

ate Japanese for dinner after 10pm to finish the day.

We walked to Notre Dame and climbed to the top. Then we walked to the

island of St Louis. Then were in the de Halle area and visited Jean and

Phillipe.

After a short nap, it is time to take a run aound the Louve and

Tuilerves Garden. It was raining hard but I have to run, The garden is

nearly empty but the run was great despite that the rain was pouring

onto my face and I was very wet.

DOE TRIP REPORT

Start at 4am from home and drove in the darkness. Got to airport at 6:30am. Got free miles membership card for SW airlines. The driver from the Super Shuttle took me along the scenic drive along the country road and passed the old downtown of the Ellicott county. The city was flooded a few years ago.

After a short nap I took a walk around the Turf Valley golf course.

The reception has a lot of food, the dinner includes shrimps, chicken and filel mingon.

10/26

Woked up by alarm then went to run on the golf course on the East side. The day was spent on talks and the evening was for poster session. Not much fun.
