BMW, Rolls-Royce announce plans for jet-engine venture

BMW said it plans to re-enter the jet-aircraft engine business after an absence of 30 years through a joint venture with Britain's Rolls-Royce PLC.

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG said it will acquire an aerospace technology line ofKloekner-Humboldt-Deutz AG and then merge the business into a joint venture with Rolls-Royce.

The West German luxury-car maker said its move back into aircraft engines reflects the company's desire to expand into new but related industrial areas. BMW said it will control 50.5 percent of the joint venture; Rolls Royce will own the remainder of the venture , which will be based in Oberursel, West Germany.

The joint venture will develop , manufacture and market jet engines of up to 20,000 pounds of thrust, which power small civilian and military jets capable of carrying up to about 100 passengers.

The new venture will be called BMW-Rolls Royce and will collaborate with Rolls-Royce's own Tay and Trent jet-engine programs, the British company said in a separate statement.

A BMW spokesman said the KHD aerospace unit - KHD Luftfahrttechnik GmbH, which is based just outside Frankfurt in Oberursel - has annual sales of about $98 million and employs about 900 people.

Munich-based BMW built aircraft engines before World War II, and by the end of the conflict was producing turbines for what was then the newly developed jet airplane, BMW said.

However, BMW left the aircraftengine business in 1959 by selling its operations to the big West German engmeenng group Man AG, which later merged the operations with Daimler-Benz AG.

BMW ACA events are partially supported by a generous grant from BMW of North America, Inc.

Daimler earlier this year agreed to link up its civilian jet engine operations with those of the Pratt & Whitney engine subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. of the United States.

Meanwhile, one of the world's largest producers of jet engines, General

Electric Co., has filed suit against Daimler 's agreement with Pratt & Whitney, charging it violates a joint engine-development accord between GE and Daimler.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you all to the 1990 Victoria Tour. This has become an annual event for many members and something a lot of us really look forward to . Our last tour was in 1988 and it was as successful as ever.

For those of you not that familiar with Victoria, it is a beautiful city - a fact that anyone who has spent any time here will agree with. Andy and I started this tour a number of years ago when we were about the only members north of the border and lo. and behold a tradition has been started.

We have chosen the weekend of September 28, 29 and 30th this year to give you a new view of Victoria. Usually the tour is held in the Spring and like Seattle; the weather can never be predicted. Choosing September should give us a better chance at fabulous weather and give all of you a look at Victoria in sunshine.

As usual we will keep the weekend informal in its structure with the exception of our fabulous German feast on Saturday night. Yes, bring an empty stomach - Canadians love good food! Friday night we will have our tradtional get together which I will host here at my home. This has always been a good way for old friends to reunite and for new friends to be made.

Saturday, we will leave basically open for you to explore our wonderful city and hopefully leave a little American money behind. As some of you know articles such as fur coats can be a wonderful buy in Victoria! For any of you wishing to have a closer look at Victoria and area we can arrange for a tour. In the past most people have pref erred that we keep the weekend unstructured and so we have, but please let us know if anyone would like to try or see something different - we aim to please!

Saturday night will be our traditional German feast and Schnapps of all varieties. You'lljust have that meal digested when Sunday a.m. we get

Victoria Tour 1990

again for breakfast/ brunch as the final opportunity to get together before everyone starts heading for home.

I have done a lot of checking into hotels - I know you prefer to be in the downtown area. The Harbour Towers Hotel is offering us by far the best rates. If we are able to book 20 rooms or more we can get a group rate of $115.00 Canadian (this is for 2 adults -2 queen sized beds). If we fall short of 20 rooms the price will be slightly higher. I must admit I for one was appalled at the cost of motels this year but they are all at least this much and many at a much higher cost. Don't forget the Canadian dollars vs. U.S. dollar exchange rate .

This weekend has become somewhat of a tradition for many and is really a lot of fun. I am determined to keep it going even if there are only 5 of us here. Please consider my invitation - it's a ways off yet but what better way to plan for a weekend away. Oh yes, for anyone wishing to bring their children please do so . Babysitters can be arranged for Saturday evening and any other time you wish.

The ferry service from Vancouver to Victoria will most likely be running on an every two hours schedule (on the odd hour) at this point in September. An interesting alternative for you to get here is the Stena Lines departing from downtown Seattle and arriving in downtown Victoria. I believe you can even take the overnight trip and book a state room on board the ship at a cost that isn't out of this world.

Hotel reservations should be made by calling the hotel directly at 1-800-663-5896. Mention you are with the BMW Club to get the group rate. The deadline for this is August 15th.

I will need to hear from those interested preferably as soon as you can but the latest date will be August 15th. Do give it some thought and if you have any questions please call me. (604-652-1025)

I am really looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones in September!

Your Committee's At Work The Committee to Support Shop

Visits is one of the lesser-known bureaus in Munich's Four Cylinder Towers, but one of the more influential. So effective and galvanized is this team that it is likely to be the first to move into the Eisenach expansion facility.

The foresight which the CSSV exhibits can be seen on most any model of BMW, and to a weekend wrench (such as myself) contains as much magic and mystery as well-written computer code. I mean, these guys seem to think of everything, all the little details, which a duffer (such as myself) can appreciate only in retrospect, gaining therefrom an inchoate sense of the myriad of possibilities of which I am not even conscious but which the CSSV has surely mapped out in the finest detail.

For example, who would think to mount the heater control valve on a 630CSi exactly 2.0 cm above the throttle pedal? A dilettante (such as myself) would put it in the engine bay, on the firewall (like the dilettantes at Mercedes Benz). But by putting it 2.0 cm above the driver's go foot, you can substitute for the control cable a direct linkage with a flimsy plastic U-joint (special order from Germany) . Also, when the single 0-ring which seals the unit wears out (special order from NASA) the engine will not be in danger of overheating from undetected coolant loss, because you will detect it right away. This was discussed in Committee minutes which, through an unfortunate production error, were riveted into the heater core and which I translate here verbatim:

I. The driver with his foot will off the pedal slip.

2. The carpet all the coolant will soak up, squishy noises making.*

3. The odor though not profound the nose will offend.

4. The shoe color of the driver will change.

5. The shoe all the coolant with soak up, squishy noises making.*

by Thomas B. Nast

*It is unclear how both the carpet and the shoe will each soak up all the coolant. Giving the Committee the full license it has already taken, perhaps it is assumed that the radiator will be refilled before a repair is made. The Committee is certainly correct in its assessment that the driver will get soaked.

So the Committee set to work to ensure that repair shops benefited as much as the lucky car owner from this engineering advance. The easiest way to do this is to bolt the valve in from its inaccessible behind. To repair it, all that needs to be done is remove the entire center console, radio and all; remove the air conditioning evaporator; remove the heater box; change the valve (it is a sealed unit, for no apparent reason, and cannot be fixed) ; replace all of the above and recharge the air conditioning. Flat rate is seven hours , plus about $90.00 for the parts, including the a / c work. Never mind the ruined carpet , worth another $800 or so; it was lousy to begin with, and this will give you a long-sought opportunity to upgrade.

Of course, you could move to Southern California and bypass the heater. Ever wonder why you see so many BMW's down there?

Just a few weeks ago I found Jurgen Bentmeister's thumbprint cast into the top chain cover of a 533i (Herr Bentmeister, in case you don't read BMW's popular "Service Bulletins'', is the technical adviser to the Committee, much as John Isuzu, err, Sinunu, is technical adviser to "Lips" Bush). It was underneath the distributor cap. I really don't know what the factoryspecified procedure is for taking off that distributor cap, but experience suggests that you might want to take the radiator out first. You see, the fan shroud (approved by the Finger Protection Committee), which is in the way, cannot quite be wriggled out from around the radiator (approved by the Thermal Transfer Dynamics Working Group) without damage because the air conditioning compressor (approved by the Free the Freon Twelve) is in the way. Your coolant probably needed flushing anyway -have the shop do it all and help Jurgen finish paying for his son's much-needed engineering degree.

Perfection is a never-attainable goal, and recent models demonstrate the CSSV is still hard at work. The 525i, for example, has eliminated the possibility of oil lines bursting by mounting the oil filter directly on the block (as with most past BMW models). In cooperation with other committees the award-winning Solar Heating Prefecture of the Thermal Transfer Dynamics Working Group), the CSSV has carefully coordinated the complete protection of that filter, particularly when the engine is hot, which is when the Lubrication Evaluation Board insists the oil be changed. From the 5 l 5i 's bottom, the engine mount and air conditioning compressor ensure the filter's chastity. From behind the subframe, the exhaust system performs like duty. From the top, the battery and exhaust

Page 7: ©1990 BMW of North America, Inc. The BMW trademark and ... · (available only as part of $25 membership fee .) Second Class postage paid at Seattle, WA. Postmaster: send address

manifold defend the filter's ramparts . Thus, the shops will suffer no red ink from their loss of burst-hose business, since only shops have the shoulderlength asbestos gloves and EPA-approved bunny suits and respirators required to change the filter "by the book."

Alas, the CSSV has never been allowed to design a complete car, from the antenna down. Which is probably for the best, because years of analysis of existing designs would be irrevocably Jost to the question thus posed: Should it have two humps, or three?

BMW Adds Two Sporty Models For 1991: 318i and 318is

Two new four-cylinder models, powered by the first four-valve-percylinder BMW engine designed for volume production, are joining BMW's 3-Seriesasearly 1991 models . At$21 ,500 base price, the new two-door 318is puts a decidedly sporty BMW driving experience within the reach of more buyers. And at $19,900, the new fourdoor 318i gives new meaning to the term "entry-level BMW."

Both of the new BMWs are powered by the same free-revving, highly efficient 16-valve engine. And lest anyone misinterpret this reappearance of the "318i" designation, which appeared on the first model in the present 3-Series back in 1984: We have here not only a completely new engine, but two distinct new models that have benefited from close to seven years of BMW's typically thorough engineering refinement.

The New 16-Valve Engine The new models' most prominent

feature is the new four-cylinder engine, which combines the high power output of four valves per cylinder with typical BMW smoothness, all-around response and durability, and excellent fuel efficiency. It is the latest in BMW's long line of four-valve-per-cylinder engines, which began with a 16-valve racing powerplant in 1966 and includes 11 different engine types, and the first specifically engineered for quantity production. Those of the BMW M3 and the new MS have much in common with racing engines and are largely hand-assembled.)

In its basic layout, the new four is closely related to the mighty V-12 engine of BMW's flagship models, the 750iL luxury sedan and the brand-new 850i sports coupe. The cast-iron block's 84-millimeter bore, in fact, is the same as .in the V-12; in the European eightvalve configuration, the 1.8-liter engine's valvegear also parallels that of the V-12.

For the 16-valve engine, BMW's engineers developed a completely new

· cylinder head. The light, strong aluminum gravity die casting carries its camshaft bearings and valve lifters in separate pressure castings that allow an optimum 39° 30' angle between the intake and exhaust valves. To save weight and reduce inertia, the camshafts are hollow; they are driven by a durable duplex chain that is kept quiet by rubber-coated guides and a hydraulic tensioner. Also contributing to quietness are hydraulic bucket tappets, which are designed to avoid oil drainage while the engine is stationary and to minimize wear by turning constantly in their bores. The cam cover, which like other external engine components is both visually attractive and functional , is acoustically decoupled from the cylinder head to further reduce valve noise. For durability under hard driving conditions, the exhaust valves are sodium-cooled.

The hemispherical combustion chambers were optimized using sophisticated computer-aided engineering techniques, not just for maximum power output but for ample torque at low and middle engine speeds; indeed, the engine's maximum torque of 127 lb-ft is quite impressive for a 1.8-liter engine. With a compression ratio of 10.0: 1, the engine is engineered to take advantage of unleaded premium fuel with a pump octane rating of 91.

Another engineering feature contributing to this new engine's combination of smooth, flexible low-speed operation with high output at high engine speeds is a two-stage throttle. At lower speeds and loads, only the smaller (35-mm / 1.4-inch) throttle opens; on demand, the larger (54-mm/ 2.2-in.) throttle opens to provide full airflow for the engine's impressive output of 134 horsepower at 6000 rpm.

Complementing the two-stage intake system is a free-flowing exhaust system, beginning with a header fabricated of large-diameter tubing and including a large-volume catalytic converter and two mufflers. For resist-

ance to corrosion, the header and most internal exhaust-system components are of stainless steel.

Working in combination with a new-generation, highly integrated Digital Motor Electronics (DME) enginemanagement system is a new type of ignition system in which the mechanical distributor is replaced by four individual coils, one per cylinder. The system reduces the number of moving parts, improves radio noise suppression, and allows more precise control of ignition timing for the individual cylinders by the DME system. Tripleelectrode sparkplugs are engineered to go 30,000 miles before replacement.

With BMW's familiar, precise-shifting five-speed manual transmission, the 3 l 8i and 3 l 8is attain 60 mph from rest in 9.9 seconds and reach an electronically governed top speed of 122 mph. Given the engine's sporty performance characteristics, BMW decided not to offer it with an automatic transmission. 31 Si: A New BMW Under $20,000

At $19,900 base price, the new 318i four-door sedan is the first BMW to be offered in North America at less than $20,000 since 1986. Yet this is a very well equipped car whose standard features include four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, power-assisted steering, central locking, power outside mirrors, air conditioning, power windows, driver's-side airbag supplemental restraing system (new in all 3-Series models for 1990) and an AM/ FM stereo/ cassette audio system.

Like the 325i, the 318i is upholstered in durable, tasteful cloth; high-quality leatherette is available at no extra cost. Available 3 l 8i options include limiteds lip differential, halogen foglights, alarm system, metallic paint and a tiltor-slide sunroof.

31 Sis: The Sporty One Although both new four-cylinder

models are lineal descendants of the car that first put BMW "on the map" for American enthusiasts - the 2002 of

Page 9: ©1990 BMW of North America, Inc. The BMW trademark and ... · (available only as part of $25 membership fee .) Second Class postage paid at Seattle, WA. Postmaster: send address

1968 - the 3 l 8is in particular captures the spirit of that beloved BMW sports sedan.

Back then, the 2002's combination of engine performance, two-door body and . BMW-style precision and handling added up to a brand-new driving experience. With 134 hp, a trim twodoor body and the handling of MTechnic suspension, the 318is puts this very same concept into highly contemporary terms.

For the sports-oriented driver, the M-Technic suspension is the perfect complement to the responsive 16-valve engine. As in the 325is, M-Technic means larger anti-roll bars front and rear and sports-tuned shock absorbers - refinements that mean crisper handling without detracting significantly from the compact BMW's ability to soak up big bumps with ease. Another feature shared with the 325is is the 3 l 8is's 6.5-in.-wide cross-spoke alloy wheels , a half-inch wider than the 318i's wheels. From the outside, the 318is is also recognizable by its extended front spoiler and discreet reardeck spoiler.

Inside, the 318is driver and front passenger enjoy the extra lateral support, adjustable thigh support and separate height adjustment of sports front seats; here too, there is a choice of fabric or leatherette. The list of extra-cost options is the same as for

Retum of the 2002 Whj).e the new four-door, under

$20,000318iis BMW's entry level, Japanese car fighter, the 318is is the car for 2002 fans. I'm proud of BMW for not retreating and going upmarket still further. The 318 is here to go toe-to-toe with the cars from the land of the rising sun.

Japanese cars come extraordinarily well equipped. That's why the 3 l 8is comes standard with air conditioning, power windows, sports seats and a nice stereo system. And wouldn't you order all these if they were options?

But the soul of any car is its engine and this one's soul is pure. The brand new 1.8 liter, 16 valve motor puts out 134 horsepower and pushes the 3 l 8is to 60 mph in 9.9 seconds. Enough to remind one of the Tii of yore.

Club members might prefer the suspension of the German market only 318is which is considerably harsher. The springs were softened for the U.S. market and the car rides 15 mm higher. The German version was deemed too radical for most Americans' taste.

The 3 l 8is is available now and is a real value. The 318i will be on dealer showroom floors in July and for $1,600 less you get two more doors. Such a deal!

-David Lightfoot

the 3 l 8i. The 318is has been welcomed by the

European and American press alike. The new engine, reported the leading German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, is "one of the best four-cylinders anywhere." Automobile found that the 318is delivers "arguably the most entertaining handling you can buy for the money. " And in Auto Week, Mark Vaughn wrote that "The newest and least expensive BMW on the market could easily turn out to be the most fun to drive." Clearly, the entry-level fourcylinder BMW has been reborn in a new form, more attractive than ever.

Priced only $1600 above the 318i, the 318is also offers excellent value -and a chance for BMW enthusiasts to acquire a true sporting BMW at a price thousands below the entry level of the past few years.

Nine Models Now Offered In 3-Series

Introduction of the 3 l 8i and 3 l 8is brings the number of models in BMW's 3-Series to nine. Other models are the 325i (six-cylinder) two- and four-door; 325is sports two-door; 325i Convertible; all-wheel-drive 325iX two- and four-door; and the M3, a special sports sedan powered by a super-performance 16-valve powerplant based on BMW's Formula I racing engine.

Russian History In A Car Magazine?

(Ed note: The Goodwill Games Art Festival is presenting Moscow Treasurers and Traditions, an exhibit of Russian art, from now to the end of September. Our club will be visiting the exhibit on September 8 at 2 P.M. This article is the first of two about the exhibit. This month, we focus on the history of Russia and touch on how that history influenced Russian art. Next month, we will delve more deeply into the artwork itself.)

It's pretty hard (no, impossible) to fully appreciate the art of a given culture without at least a vague understanding of the history of said culture. Herewith a blessedly brief outline of Russian history, designed to acquaint you with some of the major historical forces shaping the Russian art you will see on September 8th. That is when our club will visit the Moscow Treasures and Traditions exhibit, sponsored by Boeing as a part of the Goodwill Games Art Festival.

In the 14th century, Moscow became the political and cultural center of Russia." Over the next 400 years, Moscow princes presided over a mindboggling expansion of territory. From a humble 600 square mile enclave centered around the Kremlin, Russia expanded through 11 time zones in Eurasia alone, plus into Alaska and California. Among many key moments in this expansion was the defeat of the Mongols who had occupied large areas of Russia for centuries.

How was this massive land-grab accomplished by these Muscovite princes? Well, they certainly didn't do it by themselves. They were aided in no small measure by the Russian Orthodox clergy. Since the princes were spreading the Word, any who resisted were seen by the Church as enemies of Christ to be punished by excommunication. This blunted many challenges

to Moscow's supremacy, since none of her rivals could claim this combination of political power and church support.

The church, of course, is one of the prime currents running through the waters of Russian history. Actually, the church predates the existence of the Russian state. As in Europe, the church was the inspiration for much truly breathtaking art: from icons, gold censers, to the buildings themselves. The depiction of church scenes, priests ministering to the sick, as well as the otherworldly, ethereal treatment of religious figures in various works gives evidences as to the massive sway of the church in Russian life, as well as evidence why the Communists have never been able to eradicate it.

Another major influence came to be noted after the death of the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI. As the

MOSCOW TREASURES &TRADITIONS

TM

ruler of the only Orthodox state not under control by infidels, then czar Ivan the Great claimed the legacy of Byzantium. He later married the niece of the last emperor, and soon after that began to use the double-headed Byzantine eagle as a state crest.

The late 16th and early 17th century saw Russia in decline. Swedes occupied a large portion of the northwest part of the state, while the Poles even managed to occupy the Kremlin for a time. After repelling the Poles, an

Page 11: ©1990 BMW of North America, Inc. The BMW trademark and ... · (available only as part of $25 membership fee .) Second Class postage paid at Seattle, WA. Postmaster: send address

assembly of 500 delegates chose Mikhail Romanov as the new czar. The Romanov dynasty, which lasted over 300 years until deposed by the Bolsheviks, heralded a new era of culture in

/

Moscow. Of particular note was the development of lwo important cities: St. Petersburg as the political capital, and Moscow as the center of learning, ideas, and culture. St. Petersburg be-

came known for its adoption of Western ways, while Moscow attempted to blend Western influences with Russian. Was Russia like the West? Or was it a nation, where, as one said, "everything is different''?

During the heyday of the Russian nobility a few thousand nobles had controlled almost twb million serfs. These serfs were a "gift" of Catherine the Great and her son Paul to the most loyal nobles. In 1861, the serfs were emancipated, and the free spending nobles who had depended on their free labor found themselves in deep financial trouble. The resulting economic dislocations produced a entrepreneurial class who, among other activity, were heavily involved in textile manufacturing. One of these men, Pavel Tretyakov, built his own gallery which featured almost exclusively Russian works. This era produced a tremendous increase in both the quality and quantity of art, but it wasn't to last.

In 1917, after three years of war, the Romanovs were overthrown and the Bolsheviks took over. For a time the boom of creativity which characterized the latter 19th century continued. After the death of Lenin, however, this increasingly gave way to the heavy hand of "socialist realism", characterized by a relevant, if mundane, presentation of larger-than-life images of Russian life in the 30's . The works of of the artists of the earlier era were forced underground, and many have only just begun to see the light of day.

Dave Dirkes of Issaquah has a very rare BMW for sale. He is offering a 1963 BMW 700 cabriolet with 42,354 miles. The 700 has a twocylinder, air cooled boxer engine, derived from BMW motorcycles, rear mounted. Transmission is a four speed. The car is white with a red and white interior. The car is in need of major restoration but runs and everything is intact. If you're interested (price is about $10,000, but make an offer), call Dave at 392-4329.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then BMW continues to be flattered. Remember when it seemed just about every car company wanted to build a 3-Series pretender? Then BMW went upmarket and started stressing the 5-Series. And here come the pretenders again. In Car & . Driver, Jaguar's new Ford appomted chairman stated his goal to create a "BMW 5-Series competitor." Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo's Darrell Davis introduced the new Alfa 164 which will be restyled inside and out within two years and given a new name. It will be "a BMW 535 sort of car," he reported in Autoweek.

For many years, BMW has offered the 5-Series in Europe with 2.0 and 3.0 liter engines, in addition to the 2.5 and 3.5 liter engines offered here. The 530i is now being eliminated and the 520i and 525i are getting 24-valve engines with no change in displacement. These will not be Sbadged because the emphasis will be on increased torque and fuel efficiency, although horsepower will go up.

These new sixes will be known as M50 and have the same cylinder spacing as the engines they replace at 9lmm. This allows production flexibility and enables BMW to use the same tooling as on the fours (M40) and the Vl2 (M70).

An unusual feature is the intake manifold, which is made of a synthetic material, not aluminum. The M50 engines have centrally located spark plugs and direct ignition with one coil per cylinder. (Car)

Car & Driver magazine recently celebrated its 35th anniversary. In a look back at automotive "highlights", BMW was mentioned several times.

The BMW 700, a two seat coupe with a rear mounted two cylinder engine and a 78 mph top speed was tested. The price was $1898. They found it fun .

In 1979 the BMW Ml was called: "The world's best exotic, and the first of its kind to qualify as a real car."

In the same year, they said of the 320i: "Rolling proof that less is more."

The 750iL is called "the best luxury sedan on the planet" in 1988.

BMW NA has contracted with Warrantech Corp. of Stamford, Conn., to administer BMW's limited warranty and vehicle service contracts. BMW's Quality Continuation Plan provides up to 7 or 75,000 miles of service coverage. (Roundel).

The West Coast Chapter (Vancouver) of the BMW Car Club of Canada will be holding a track day on September 30th at Westwood Race Track. This is the last track day available to any club prior to the closing of Westwood.

When the Philippine's dictator, President Marcos, was relieved of his duties, much publicity was made of the finds in the Presidential Palace.

However, two rather interesting items were apparently overlooked, because amongst the piles of footwear were two BMW 3 l 6s belonging to Imelda Marcos. You could tell they were Imelda's because they were painted metallic pink, her favorite color. And every badge bore the legend IMELDA in case there were any doubt.

Inside, the roof lining was trimmed in mink with gold plating and mother-of-pearl inlaid dashboard. The odometer readings were 1548 on one and 892 on the other, so they never went very far.

But why did she need two BMWs finished exactly the same way? Well, as one Filipino wag commented at the time they were found , she had one for each foot.

The whereabouts of these very special BMW's is presently unknown. (BMW Driver's Book)

The new 24-valve 525i goes on sale in North America this summer. In early '91 ASC+T will be offered as an option. What is ASC+T? It's a traction control system using brake actuation. (Automobile).

Mercedes-Benz will unveil a 200-mph supercar at the 1991 Frankfurt auto show. The car is loosely based on M-B's Group C sports racing car. Power is from a 500 horsepower V-8 giving 0 to 60 times under 4 seconds. The man behind the project is J ochen Neerspasch, who was responsible for the Ml while employed by BMW. If the car goes into production, it will break the existing gentlemen's agreement between BMW and Mercedes not to build cars that can exceed 155 mph. How about a reply built around the V-12, BMW AG? (Car & Driver)

BMW is testing a special 3-Series Touring with the Nurenburg post office. What makes the car so special is its powerplant - an electric motor. The converted 325iX is a test vehicle for BMW's high energy battery and electric motor. The motor produces 23 horsepower and 50 foot-pounds of torque. Top speed is 62 mph; 0 to 30 mph takes nine seconds. Range is 90 miles in city traffic. Recharging is accomplished in 12 hours by plugging into a standard household (220 volts in Germany) outlet. (Roundel)

First of BMW's new 3-Series, the four-door , is expected in January with a station wagon, two-door coupe and convertible in the pipeline - though perhaps two years down the road. However, all have been seen testing in California and Germany. The new cars are nearly six inches longer, two inches wider, but also have improved aerodynamics and up to 220hp. (Autoweek)

Renderings of a four-wheel-drive Kamm back version of BMW's Zl sports car have been circulating in Europe, but company officials decided to put the rumor of the car's production to rest by showing off a full-size fiberglass model of the concept during a recent tour of BMW Technik.

According to Dr. Klaus Faust, managing director of the unit, the one-off styling exercise was penned by none other than Harm Lagaay, stylist of the Zl, under Technik's founder, Dr. Ulrich Bez. Lagaay and Bez later went to Porsche and teamed on the Carrera Panamerica, a 4wd sports car for Dr. Ferry Porsche's 80th birthday. The Panamerica was unveiled at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Porsche's paint scheme, a metallic green, is virtually identical to the color of the Zl Kammback.

Faust said the Kammback version was developed about the same time as the Zl, but was shelved early on for fear it would detract from the sports car's exclusivity. (Autoweek)

BMW's chief stylist, Claus Luthe, has been arrested in the April 14th stabbing murder of his son. Ulrich, 33, suffered from drug and alcohol problems and had returned to live with his parents. He was stabbed several times in a quarrel. The elder Luthe joined BMW AG in 1976 as chief stylist and was most recently responsible for the new 850i. (Roundel)

Vallelunga was the site of the 9th and 10th round of the Italian Touring Car Championship.

Heat l saw the pole sitter Roberto Ravaglia take the lead, but half way through the 2nd lap the engine of his works BMW cut out and Maggiorelli's BMW ploughed into the back of him. This left the BMW contingent at bascially one, because Tarquini was blacked flagged for trying to push Capello off the track. Tarquini refused to come off the track however and set the fastest time of the race on lap 4. Tarquini was given an offer of a free pair of shoes from Brunos cement works and he felt that the pits looked like a good place to park his car. The surviving M3 of Pirro had also taken a battering in all of the action, but despite a smoking front tire, he managed to avoid any further trouble and went on to win. Larini brought the works Alfa 75 into second and Capellos Alfa was third.

With three M3s at the back of the grid, it looked as if sparks might once again fly in the second race, but Pirro cruised to an easy win. The action was provided by Ravaglia, as he was one of the last place BMWs, but not for long. Setting fastest lap on the way, he took second place from Larine six laps from the end and set about gathering in Pirro. The lead of Pirro was too much

for the time left and Ravaglia had to settle for second at the finish. The two BMWs were followed by the Larini Alfa, the M3 of Tarquini (he looks good in his new summer loafers that float as well as a Trump check) was fourth in front of his teammate Maggierelli .

That wraps up this month's report since I don't have any of the local action results, although I know there was some, but I didn't get to SIR for the vintage cars and no one has sent me any other information. I'll leave you with a question then. With all of cars and different classes, why didn't BMW have even a single car entered at Le Mans? They don't have to put a Group C car into the 24 hour event, but it would seem that the Vl2 would be a real contender, but an M3 could have held up the marque's image it would seem. Maybe next year?

Whoops! What was that in front of those BMWs? A Vauxhall Cavalier, come on, get real.

I am sorry to report that it was indeed a Vauxhall that finished in front of the Bimmers at last British Touring Car Championship race. The May 28th round 3 race, held at Thruxton, saw John Cleland win the Class B race and finish 7th overall, five seconds in front of Jeff Allam's BMW.

The Thruxton track is pretty much a flat out blast kind of track and the Class A Ford Sierra RS500s took the first six places. For all of the speed and open corners on this circuit, there was a lot of contact right from the start. On the first. lap Cleland was forced wide at the second corner and said "there was a hell of a lot of shoving and I got pushed back behind the BMWs." The Class A Fords strung out in a line and the drivers were afraid of "cooking our tires'', but the Class B cars kept the crowd entertained although Cleland was out into a solid lead by lap 4 of this 20 lap event. Sytner and Luby ran in team formation , about 5 seconds behind the Vauxhall and Allam pulled them in after stalling on the starting grid and getting off in last place. Allam tore through the other M3s and on the last lap had the Prodrive team of Sytner and Luby in his sights . Up the hill into the chicane Sytner took a shot at passing Luby and the cars touched, sending them both into a spin. Allam jumped over the curbs and took second, Sytner recovered for third and Luby slipped to fifth, behind the Sierra of Andy Rouse. Final finishing order was:

I Robb Gravett Ford Sierra 2 Tim Harvey Ford Sierra 3 Graham Hathway Ford Sierra 4 L. Bristow Ford Sierra 5 Sean Walker Ford Sierra 6 Grahame Good Ford Sierra 7 John Cleland Vauxhall Cavalier 8 Jeff Allam BMW M3 9 Frank Sytner BMW M3

Hans Stuck dominated rounds 11 and 12 of the German Touring Car Championship at another fast course, this time in Wunstorf. At the start of the first heat Stuck was easily ahead on the run to the first corner followed by the Mercedes of van Ommen and the BMWs of Schmickler, Cecotto, Thiim in a Mercedes, and the BMW of Laffite. The pattern of the first four didn't change, but there was a real tussle between Thiim, Laffite, Soper and Heger for the fifth spot. Laffite had to pit to change a damaged tire and Heger called it a day with a broken engine. He probably called it more than a day, but I can't use those kind of words in this family magazine, actually if I could SPELL those words in German I would use them.

While this was going on up front , Joachim Winkelhock had charged through the field in his BMW to gain sixth place, having started on the last row this was a great drive, but with only 4 laps to go, this was as far as he

got. Hans Stuck crossed the finish line 1.2 seconds in front of van Ommen's Mercedes. Cecotto, hampered by a handicap weight of lOOkg, was glad to finish third followed by Soper, Winkelhock and Hahne.

At the start of the second race, Stuck once again lead the pack down to the first corner, followed by van Ommen, Winkelhock, Cecotto, Soper and Hahne. Winkelhock ousted the Mercedes for second place while the train of cars consisting of Cecotto, Soper, Hahne and Thiim followed on. The first four places remained unchanged but the battle for fifth kept the massive crowd of 35,000 on its feet . Lafitte retired after coming together ("coming together" sounds kind of pleasant doesn't it, what they actually did was bend each others cars) with Fritz Kreutzpointner. With a last name like that I don't think I would have hit him, just think about filling out the accident report! OK, so it's a race track and there isn't any accident report, but think of how much it cost the team owner to paint his name on the side of the car. I think I would fire him unless he changed his name to Schmit or Karl or at least promised to stop bending the tin. Meanwhile back at the race, on lap 16 Hahne outbraked Giroix and slipped into fifth behind a very happy Stuck,Winkelhock, van Ommen and Cecotto.
