Once again it gives us great pleasure to congratulate the five clubs that have earned the "ONE SQUARE IS FAIR" AWARD by

having one or more squares at all of our 1985-1986 season specials. Con-gratulations go to COUNTRY PROMENADERS, DANCING SQUARES, HIX & CHIX, LAKE-LAND SQUARES, and RICHMOND DANCERS.

We started working on our 1986-87 award with the Warm-Up dance in August and we had eleven clubs with one square or more. BRAVO!!! We are off to a good start, however we felt and many dancers agreed that the Warm-Up dance, which is usually held on Labor Day week-end, was not a good dance to count in the award.

It seems quite a few people have commitments on Labor Day week-end with family gatherings, taking the kids back to college, etc. Therefore the Executive Board, with the approval of the Delegates have agreed that the Warm--Up dance will no longer be counted in the "ONE SQUARE IS FAIR" award. We also agreed that the Mini-Festival will be counted it was not counted in the past). This now gives all clubs a chance this year in getting the award. For those clubs that did attend the Warm-Up dance with one square er tr-e and hav-e—onn -square- Dr more at all of our specials this season, there will be a special award.

L.U.S.T. (Let Us Speak Together) was a huge success this year and special thanks go to Co-Chairpersons: Frank & Betty Olier and Frank & Helen Cavan-augh for doing such a fantastic job in planning a very informative and en-joyable day. Also many thanks to all the people who gave their time and talents to help make L.U.S.T. 1986 a memorable occasion. Our day was topped off with a great dance called by none other than our new slim John Kaltenthaler. We are already planning our next LUST for 1988.

We hope to have a great turn out at the 12th Mini-Festival. The Mini-Festival is becoming the high light of the year and this year we will have two halls with one hall for Mainstream and one hall for Plus and Rounds, with Advanced dancing and a Round Dance exhibition in between.

Our clubs are now in full swing and the holidays will soon be upon us. We are wondering how many of you will be giving of oneself. Don't just join a club, be a part of it. Give a helping hand without being asked. Bring refreshments once in a while, fill up an empty water pitcher, help set up and clean up after a dance. Help greet new dancers and guest with a.smile and invite them into your square. We are sure you receive quite

FAD. 1st VP: 63 1986 graduates qualified for FREELOADERS from 20 differ-ent clubs. All were thanked for their support of the summer dance program. Average attendance was 23-1- sets. Future specials - Nov. 29- John Sweeney; Jan. 31 Don Coy; May 30 Tom Rinker; Jan 30 '88 - Mike Callahan. Five clubs qualified for "ONE SQUARE IS FAIR" awards. 2nd VP: 30 clubs are sponsoring classes. Two class level dances planned by NNJ Jan 25 & April 26. MS & Plus booklets are available to NNJSDA mem-ber clubs at cost, slightly higher to non-members. 3rd VP: Rose Ericson congratulated for submitting winning poster. Gover-nors of PA,NY & NJ all signed proclamations declaring September as S/D month. Copies sent to appropriate clubs. Publicity Primer (one per club) distributed at LUST. FAD (Fun At Dancing) has submitted membership appli-cation. To be voted on by delegates at. January meeting. Bergen County Festival of Arts exhibition set for end of Sept. Bill Heyman to call. Reminded all to fill out questionnaires for input on NNJSDA's specials. COR SEC: Reminded all that club rosters are due December 1st. GRAND SQUARE: Distributed at LUST. Ended year in black. Report in next issue. Needs local typist - any volunteers? Thanked volunteer Shirley Sherlock for all her typing assistance. RID ADVISOR: Reminded all of NNJRDLC special in November with 2 halls. INSURANCE: Distributed a packet of information for every club. Any ???? contact Fred Hill 201-459-4667. Renewals due back November 1. MINI-FESTIVAL: 2 halls; MS & + with 3 callers Don. Beck, Henry Ferree & Brian Fugere with Wolcotts on rounds. Registrars are the Dell-Angelos. BLOOD BANK: A letter for all clubs explaining Blood Program. Asked S/D to donate at local Blood Drives in name & # (9192) of NNJSDA. OLD BUSINESS - BADGES - The NNJSDA badge was redesigned.A person's name and club will go on it as a hanger and thus the badge can be passed along to successors. The NNJ is underwriting the cost, but club's are respon-sible for the hangers. ROSES - The Margo's have roses (stick on-red ones) which will help defray cost of Floats in previous Tournament of Roses par-ade. SDNCJ - Sponsoring the first NJ state convention Saturday, March 14. At Trenton State College - an all day affair. See flyer for details. LUST - Over 230 attended. Well received. Attendees want more sessions, with fewer simultaneously and better directions at facility. Micro-LUST's to be conducted prior to delegate meetings under Education Chairman. DUES -- After a lengthy, thorough discussion it was passed to raise the NNJSDA member club dues to per membeL....effecLive immediately. NEW BUSINESS - FAD's application for membership rementioned. Their delegates present to answer all questions. ONE SQUARE IS FAIR AWARD - 3 clubs received it first year; 5 this year. No objection to deleting the Warm-Up dance from requirement and substituting Mini-Festival. Meeting then opened to Delegate discussion. (see page 38)

Refreshments served by Hill City, Hi Taws and Hix & Chix. During the refreshment break all committees had a chance to meet with their respec-tive Chairman and discuss the coming year as it related to their respon-sibilities. Meeting adjourned at 4:43 PM. Next meeting Jan. 18, 1987.

so successful. An Editor's life is full of surprises - thankfully our Area Reporters and Advertising Editor continued on in their all important jobs. Distrubution was streamlined under the Sandt's supervision; Shirley Sherlock was the answer to a dream as she shared her considerable talents and introduced ye editors to the Smith Corona SD (love those initials) 300 & its spell right beep; and we were fortunate to have Linda Morrison volunteer to replace Chuck when we retired from the activity. Now we're breaking in 2 volunteer typists- Joan Berg & Kathy Porter - to replace Shirley who rejoined the working world (or rather now gets PAID for work) So while YOU prepare for the holidays, the staff will be hard at work. A letter was sent, via the delegates meeting, to every club president asking for their help with the Blood Drives. Until the NNJ can establish which elubs ur groups of clubs in an area can re-

cruit enough donors (minimum 30 donors) to conduct their own drives, we must ask you to participate in the open mobiles in your community. Each month when Burt Caplan gets the list of open dates, he shall send a copy to nearby clubs. If a club has a Blood Drive Chairman, please let Burt know. in the meantime. if you do donate blood, use the NNJ number #9192. Also ask the registrar there for the blue copy of the form they signed and give this to your club Blood Bank Chairman so the NNJ will have a record.

"Selective insurance Company" is December 15, 1986, A renewal form, along with much pertinent information, was given to the delegates at the September Delegates meeting by our Insurance Coordinators Fred/Kathryn Hill. They strongly recommend their handout (Bulletin #1, Rev. 5) be given to the club treasurer for safe keeping and ready reference. Much investi-gative work has been done in an effort to find similar coverage with a lower premium. At this time the Hills cannot state whether there will be any change in the insurance premium. Our dancing season is now in full swing. We started by cele-brating S/Dancing. Mike Foley took us back about ten years by using many fine old singers. We had many visitors at our Open House. Wayne Applegate made them feel right at home on the dance floor. It was also a night for celebrating Eugene

We began our new season with a flurry, having our first dance as a Fun Nite....by having an open house, inviting new people to come/observe and try their hand at square dancing. It turned out to be an enjoyable even-ing with the guests enjoying themselves more than they anticipated.

We now have a complete slate of officers with John/Linda Kenny Presi-dents & Dick/Roberta Dulaney VP's. Classes are off to a flying start -good turn out of students. I'm sure they will turn out to be a hard work-ing group that we can look forward to having joining our club later on. We have a great line-up of callers for our upcoming dances and we would very much like to see you come and square up with us.

Years ago New York State had a most active Federation who successfully battled the NY Tax Bureau. A state wide convention drew large crowds. Our Welcome Back Dance was what we expected. A chance to meet with friends with special news of summer weddings, vacations, & cheery greet-ings. The leaves are turning colors & the Autumn Dance was an excuse to dance & prepare for the Crazy Hat

Nite Dance in October. We had some strange visitors on Halloween Dress Up Nite. One never knows who will arrive and spook us. The Garden State Campers Group raided us in Nov. & the Lakeland Squares are expected in Dec. We will be giving a demo at the Newton Hospital this fall also. Our Big Top weekend was a huge success, the largest crowd in its 21 year his-tory due largely to the efforts of Frank/Margaret Birmingham & Jim/Pat Ray. A quick tally of dancers showed upwards of 25 squares. Calling was provided by Lhe Mason Dixon Line, who will return next year. Thanks also to Pete Divan for leading us in

the Rounds. John Wieland, Charles Porter & Peter Yuskevich walked off with top honors in the Miss Big Top, Sexiest & Funniest contests respect-ively. The Sept. Barn Dance chaired by John/Judy Mastroiano, with Joe Fioretti calling, kicked off the new season. Everyone who attended had a good time. The Staten Island RIOS fall class had a large turnout at its open house. It's being chaired by Len Bianco. George/ Delores Pascua are serving as treasurers. There is still plenty of room for angels. We extend our condolences to Joe/Rae Troiano on the recent loss of their son. Get well wishes are extended to Joe DiGiacomo, Harry Childs, Lorr-aine Litkenhaus & Jack Wall who are all recovering from surgery. We dance for fun & friendship. Why not join us?

fun for all. Some who had joined in the fun attended our introductory dance the following Monday. Our beginners are eager and enthusastic and have the support from a wonderful corps of angels. It's exciting to think of the enjoyment ahead for them. Not only is it rewarding to learn new skills and to exercise, but the camaraderie that develops and the friend-ships made are well worth the efforts involved. With his usual expertise Bob Tarrant opened our first Plus Workshop and reinforced the fact that a Plus Workshop is useful and needed. This workshop starts at 7:30 with the regular dance at 8 PM; add rounds by Peg/Ted Tristram and "POW" you have a packed fun-filled evening.

With fall here and school starting for all the Rutgers students, the

Promenaders are back in session, and the year promises to be a BLAST!!

We started things off with a tremendously successful high-lo eleven

squares of guests and angels. Our guests gave the occasion an interna-

tional flair, being from Switzerland, Turkey, the Philippines and else-

where. Conversation presented a few difficulties, but then again, danc-

ing crosses all language barriers. We followed with two very enthusias- tic dances, and the energy level is rising. Come and join us, but check

on the dance location. This fall we divide our time between Busch

Campus Center and Douglass College Center.

is always a very special treat with

special refreshments, gifts and great dancing. We hope you can

join us. Looking back brings memories of several super dances we've already experienced. Our annual Dessert Dance opened our season with

lots of delicious goodies, and Ralph Trout's calling to help work off

the calories. Our 35th Anniversary Dance chaired by Joe/Emma DiGiovanni

and called by Joe Landi was a hugh success also. Our sincere congratu-lations to Frank/Shirley Bellotti who were honored at the dance as our newest "Honorary Lift- Members." They join a very "elite" group. The

past honorees are Joe/Beulah Samec, Jim/Jean Laird, and Lee Kirchmyer

(and her late husband Ray). We do not give this award often or lightly,

which only proves what very special people they are. We wish all of you

a joyous holiday season and a very Happy New Year.

We opened our season with an open house in September. There was a large turnout and it looks like we will have a good class. Wilson Hoff will continue to be the teacher. Bob Mitchell called our first dance. Everyone was back from the summer and a good time was had by all. This year the Spinks are cueing rounds for us. With the addition of approxi-mately 16 new members we are looking forward to a busy season of dancing.

We waited with excited anticipation to begin our third mainstream

classes in October. Many of the students who graduated in May plan to

"angel" beginning that date. They feel that the angels were there to help them and want to be there for the next class. This type of cooper- ation is what makes a club tick. Your club is only as good as the effort put in. We enjoyed quite a bit of fellowship over the last few months

starting with our club picnic held at the Colonial Sportsmens Club in

Hopewell. Each of the ladies prepared a covered dish topped off with

Theresa Vicari's chocolate cake made in the shape of our square dance

logo. It was delicious, thanks Theresa! The day was topped by a huge

group of us square dancing in the large swimming pool which earned many

of us a duck dangle for our badges, followed by our wonderful club

caller, John Kephart, swinging us into a few tips to end a perfect day.

It is with regret that we say goodbye to John Kephart and his lovely

wife Sherry, who h,,s been transferred to Germany for the next 3 years. We'll miss you terribly John and Sherry, best wishes to both of you.

Our first two dances of the year were well

attended. Eight squares enjoyed dancing to the superb calling of Carl

Hanks. His singing calls are something you just have to hear to appre-

ciate. After four years of dancing at the same location, we suddenly found ourselves wondering if we could use the Central School in Montville.

After some quick (& frantic) phone calls, the 2 & 4 Wednesdays have moved

over to the First Presbyterian Church in Whippany. Then the C-I group learned we could still have the Central School, so they remained dancing

there on 1st & 3rd Fridays. It you have any questions call the Tingleys

In June we danced with Hemlock Squares, in July at Cherry Valley Methodist Church, senior citizens at Dansbury Par in August at outdoor world, Timothy Lakes and the West End Fair!!! Almost forgot also at the Antique auto Show in Springtown, PA. Between all of these activities and our Tuesday plus classes at Hope, NJ we kept in con-tact with each other. Our season started off on a sad note...the death of Dottie Simmons.

class got off on the right foot with caller Rich Murphy. Many Rangers had a great weekend of camping and danc-

ing at the Garden State S/D Campers Mini-Camporee at the Sussex County

Fairgrounds. If you didn't come to square up with Ted Knauss and dance

rounds with Al Spinks before this issue, you missed some fun dancing,

and some of the most spectacular fall foliage we've seen in years.

Gone are the hot summer days which we enjoyed while they were here. Another season has started. We were happy to see so many smiling faces, all in good spirits, full of excitement and ready to set their dancing feet into motion. Our first dance with Manny Amor's sparkling, jubilant calling & shirley/Frank Bellotti on the rounds was a great success. Come dance with our talented callers - Ray Lehberger, Wes Morris, Bill Heyman to name a few. Discussion on how to meet club expenses...meet deficit thru outside activities, renegotiate contracts, raids, joint dances, cancel a dance when you know attendance will be low, more publicity, encourage visitations. Mention made S/D admission has not drastically changed over years while other prices have sharply risen. Discussion on raids and banner stealing. While NNJ has never gone in for Banner STEALING, pinning banners had been well received. GRAND SQUARE will research some typical rules of raiding. Letters to Editor always welcome - if signed! Discussion on - are we pushing dancers into PLUS too soon. Stress remain at program at which the dancer is most comfortable. Mention Ms clubs hold classes; + clubs hold classes. Federation of Delaware Valley most impressed with NJ state out-fits and is now trying to design a state outfit their state can adopt. Our Open House was well attended

by a jovial, enthusiastic group eager

to start the new season. A large 411IMMM number of would-be students joined

Lincoln School , Crane St., Caldwell N. .1. - us every other tip. Paul Brody made every tip fun for all. Our new class with Russ/Laura Safar as Coordinators

and Instructor, Herb Conklin, is well

on its way to becoming accomplished dancers. Your new officers are busy

planning raids, demos, and special events. Ten members attended LUST.

Allcame away impressed and more knowledgeable by our experience there. The seminars conducted by the very able Moderators and the interchanging

of ideas between clubs was very enlightening. On a sadder note, we all

share with Evelyn a great sense of loss caused by the death of Bert

Boucher, yet we also feel privileged to have had our lives touched by

this fine gentle soul who enriched all that knew him. Bert was one of

the shining lights of Cross Trails and his courage over the past two

years was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.

WRAP UP - LUST '86 Over 230 attended the Leadership seminar Sept. 14 at the Douglass Campus of Rutgers University. 2/3 of those present were officers with several serving in 2 or 3 different clubs! 1/3 of those at-tending had danced under 4 years; another 1/3 between 5 & 9 years with the rest scattered from 10 to 36 years! A vast range of experiences to draw upon. In going over the critique sheets, most felt it was well planned, very informative & helpful, an excellent learning experience, enjoyed the warm friendliness and sharing of ideas and meeting people with similar problems. Some wondered if it could start earlier in day, with fewer si-multaneous sessions so they could attend more sessions. All comments will be passed along to the next LUST Chr for '90. Hickory Hills did the fashion show; John Kaltenthaler moderated & called the PM dance with the Tirrells on rounds. Oliers & Cavanaughs are to be praised for a GREAT LUST.

Herbal Toe Stuffers

While scanning one of the many free catalogs that cress my

desk, I found an ad for shoe shapers. It read, "Lengthen

the life of leather and fabric shoes!" Just slip them in

to absorb moisture, to re-shape shoes after wearing. One

set, $6.98, plus postage.

The wheels began to turn, I leafed through my file of sewing

ideas accumulated through the years and low and behold,

there they were...Toe Stuffers...the Herbal was my idea, and

it adds a pleasant scent to your closet as well. These make

delightful gifts, and scrap fabrics may be used, and the

cost is minimal.

Directions: Trace pattern shown below. Place pattern on the

fold of fabric. Cut two at a time, you will need four

pieces to make two stuffers. Sew around curved edges leav-

ing top open. Trim sewn seams to 1/4 inch width. Turn to

right side of fabric, press. Stuff with old cutup nylons

or commercial stuffing. Pack Pot-Pourri of your choice here

and there in the stuffing. Close the open end and gather it

for shape. Add a piece of ribbon or plastic ring for grip-

ping when pulling out of shoes. You may wish to fill with

just Pot-Pourri, either way is nice.

There's something new among international INTRODUCING: organizations - you've heard of CALLERLAB and

CONTRALAB

ROUNDALAB - well, now there is CONTRALAB! - the international association of contra callers.

In actuality CONTRALAB was begun in February 1985 with the support of contra leaders from all over. The past few months have been devoted to organizational matters. On Wednesday before the National Square Dance Con-vention officially began, contra leaders from all over the US and overseas met to set goals and policies and elect a Board of Governors. Dick Meyers of Cranford,NJ is on the Board. The aim of CONTRALAB is to promote the cause of contra dancing and to enhance the skills of contra callers. A quarterly publication, edited by Walt Cole will keep its membership up to date. Contra dancing is in a growth period, both for itself and for its influence on the rest of the dance world. We wish the new organization well.

eE The International Assembly of Trustees of the Square Dance Activity will he holding its biennial meeting this coming May 14-17 down in Nashville, TN. High on its agenda will he he a discussion of the results of the 5th

dancer survey which is to be conducted this winter. The Tirrells are chairing the Survey Committee with a lot of assistance from the membership.

The face of square dancing has changed many times over the years. A Rip Van Winkle, waking up after a 35 year snooze would scarcely recognize the activity the way it is today as being a part of his dance back in the late 1940's. Certainly much of what we now enjoy would be a vast improvement. One of the first things Rip might notice would be the excellence of so many of our callers. What at one time was a casual avocation for the callers has today become a prime art form for many individuals whose ability would rival that of some of our popular recording singers.

Another thing Mr. Van Winkle would notice is the quality of the recor-dings. Back in 1950 there was only a handful of record companies turning out the old 10-inch, 78 rpm discs. And the sound systems! The equipment we had in the 40's was usually bulky (and portable only because it had a handle) and would be less than acceptable by today's standards.

Immediately following WW-II, most of the nation was in a state of change. Lives that had been disrupted by the War were now fitting back to-gether. Families that had been scattered began to settle down to post-war living. New communities were springing up everywhere and with this growth came a need for people to get acquainted with their neighbors. What they needed was a good method for making friends. The answer came, just as it had many times during this country's short history, to involve the people in the friendly spirit of our traditional dance. Introduce them to S/Ding.

Old time callers dug into their little black books of handwritten calls. Recreation leaders began their research. Schools, churches, public buil dings opened their halls to Square Dancing, & folks began to rush to the open dances that were springing up everywhere.

At first there were no classes so anyone who knew anything about square dancing welcomed the non-dancer into the squares. As time went on & there was more to learn, it became necessary to start classes - and they were fun. Callers saw to it that the programs were filled with mixers - mixers from squares - mixers in circles. This concept not only taught the person how to dance, but introdUced them to each other and, in a setting of fun and excitement, square dancing became the means for folks to get acquainted.

Our Rip Van Winkle, while amazed at many of today's plus factors, might lament that some groups have missed the point that it is this fun & joy of the activity that brings people into the halls in the first place and that it is this spirit of friendliness that cements a happy S/D club. Square dancing was, and is, a challenge to one's dexterity & mental prowess and it affords one the joy of moving to music, but it is designed to be so much more. It is an answer to An inrlividual's need for neighborliness and friendliness. To have one aspect without the other would be to miss much that the activity has to offer. Bill Brockett summed up the feeling when he wrote for the American Square Dancers stationed overseas, "Friendship is Square Dancing's Greatest Reward!" Think about it.

It is very difficult to find a knowledgeable dancer or caller

who is free daytimes to share their S/D talents with the many senior citizen groups in our NNJ area. (Most of the time the onl pay is seeing the joy on the par-ticipants' faces). Charlie and Jeannette Novak have been intro-

; Stockholm (Sweden), Orebro (Sweden), Oslo (Norway) & Stavanger (Norway) as well as a reunion with the Stintfang Dancers of Hamburg, Germany last May. Clubs extended Themsr,ivec with hos-pitality, opening their homes for over-night accommodations, sharing traditional foods, exchanging ad-dresses and being in-

vited to spend time with the group when they visit America in the future. With 3 clubs in Norway, the group danced at every Norway club...not so

in Sweden which numbers over 70! The Tyreso Squares even hired a cos-tumed folk dance group to come perform some traditional dances (one of which resembled Grand Square!). The club in Stavanger extended an invi-tation for other groups to come over. Interesting to note that the orig-inal copper for the Statue of Liberty came from Stavanger! Next trip by this group will be Hawaii in 1988.

The first hour on Mondays is devoted to S/D ROM's, then at 9 we move into R/D ROM's and occasionally a "lucky strike" extra such as Don Valero.

Our ladies have turned into "capes" as the Tuesday niters have been working on the Paso Doble figures in "El Adorno". It's a whole new lan-guage. Pelham Promenaders in the early summer and they returned the raid in September. F.A.D.Squares also raided us in July. Year old Amanda Gold-

smith was our youngest visitor of the summer (she brought Mark/Sue with her). Our open house in September was very successful with over two squares of visitors enjoying their tast of square dancing. Our new

We had a very nice turnout at our one nighter and know that many of the group will be taking lessons as part of the West Windsor-Plainsboro Community Educa- tion Program. As the July 20th weather cleared, the Leisure Sq. breathed a sigh of re-lief as the work of 30+ couples was not in vain.

for the Monroe County Susquecentennial Parade was ready. They a sway back trailer pulled by a large borrowed tractor with carpet; they had plants and flowers and a gazebo creating a

back yard garden. Everything was borrowed begged for, donated or "acquir ed". The five mile long parade ran through East Stroudsburg & Stroudsburg with Leisure Squares dancing ALL the time. The project, engineered & di-rected by Pam/Bill Hochrine, workers & dancers from Leisure Squares, with Ed Miller as caller (lipsinging the Red Boot Boys Tape) was the hit of the the parade. TV channels 17 & 39 taped & replayed it the whole week! The parade watchers greeted the float most enthusiastically-whistling, clap-- ping, even dancing. What a thrill when Leisure Squares was awarded the plaque for the Most Beautiful Theme in the parade! Congratulations!
