DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA FILE
The Survey of Population Change in Thailand was a continuoussurvey conducted in 3-month rounds for the period from 1984 to1986. Rounds 1 to 4 generated data on changes in demographiccharacteristics, documented in the National Statistical Officepublication "Report on Population Characteristics: The 1984Survey of Population Change." The present data set includesRounds 5 to 9, covering the period from July, 1985, to September,1986.
The data file consists of 353,350 individual recordsresiding in 71,463 individual and collective households in 52 ofthe 72 changwats (provinces) of Thailand. The SPC covered 245enumeration blocks and 255 villages.
A two-stage unequal probability sampling design was used toselect the sampling units. Sampling was done according to thefollowing procedure (National Statistical Office, 1988):
(1) 52 changwats were selected using simple random sampling andgrouped into 4 regions and Bangkok Metropolis.
(2) In each region, municipal and non-municipal areas (tambon)were grouped separately for the first of the two samplingstages. A sample of municipal and non-municipal areas wasdrawn separately for each region in accordance with the totalpopulation distribution of the region.
(3) According to sampling fractions determined for each region, asystematic random sample of blocks was taken from municipalareas. Likewise, a systematic random sample of villages wastaken from non-municipal areas. The sampling of blocks andvillages formed the second and final stage of the samplingdesign.
Socioeconomic characteristics were recorded at Round 5(beginning July, 1985), which provides the baseline population.Changes in household composition, i.e. births, deaths, andmigration, as well as certain socioeconomic characteristics (e.g,marital status, V36), were recorded in Rounds 6 through 9.Socioeconomic characteristics were also recorded in Rounds 6through 9 for any household members who were not in Round 5 butwere present in later rounds. Data were collected forindividuals who were permanent residents, including those who
3
were temporarily absent from the household (residence status,V22-26, codes 1 and 2). The mid-year population is estimated asthe average of the populations at Round 5 and Round 9.
Weighting is necessary to adjust for the differentialsampling design of the SPC. The sampling fractions were obtainedthrough communication with the National Statistical Office inBangkok. These sampling fractions do not inflate the sample tothe total Thai population; rather, they adjust the sample torepresent the actual population distribution by region andmunicipal/non-municipal area. The weighted sample size is equalto the original unweighted sample size:

area 0.72 0.16 0.16 0.16 0.16
Non-municipal

*excluding Bangkok
The SPC was designed to obtain estimates of fertility, mortality, and the rate of population growth at the region level. The SPC was designed as one component of a dual-record system ofvital events. The Ministry of the Interior maintains aregistration system whose records are matched against the datacollected from the SPC to measure the completeness of birth anddeath registration (for more information on matching procedures, see the 1988 National Statistical Office report).

V3 AMPHOE 4 - 5
All provinces or changwat in Thailand aredivided into districts or amphoe. Eachamphoe within a province is identified by a2-digit code, ranging from 01 to 29. SeeAppendix A for amphoe codes.
V4 TAMBON 6 - 7
Tambon or sub-districts are classified asmunicipal or non-municipal areas. The term"municipality" refers to an administrativestatus conferred by the Thai Ministry ofInterior on a locality that meets certainpopulation size and density criteria. Amphoeinclude both non-municipal and municipalareas. There are 3 types of municipalities:
9
nakhon (minimum population of 50,000 anddensity of 3,000 per square kilometer); muang(minimum population of 10,000 and density of3,000 per square km); and tambon (small townor commune--there are no official numericalcriteria for this). A tambon is establishedby decree by the Ministry of Interior,

usually because it has "urban characteristicsand adequate income to provide the servicesneeded for an urban location" (VisidPrachuabmoh and Penporn Tirasawat, 1974:Internal Migration in Thailand, Paper No. 7,Institute of Population Studies,Chulalongkorn University: Page 11). Inaddition, the seat of provincial governmentmust also be established as a muangmunicipality regardless of population sizeand density.

V5 ENUMERATION DISTRICT NUMBER (ENUMDIST) 8 - 9
This is a 2-digit code, ranging from 01 to99, used to identify Enumeration Districtswithin municipal and non-municipal areas. Anenumeration district was defined as an areaassigned to an enumerator to be completedduring the stated enumeration period. Inmunicipal areas an enumeration districtconsisted of one or two blocks, containingabout 200-300 households. In non-municipalareas, the enumeration district consisted of250-350 households and could be part of avillage, a whole village, or more than one

The village number is a 2-digit codeidentifying villages in non-municipal areas.Villages are the final sampling units in non-municipal areas, in which up to 19 villageswere selected.
V8 HOUSEHOLD NUMBER (HH#) 14 - 17
Each household is identified by a 4-digitnumber within each ED, starting from 0001.

Examples of collective households are: Wat(Temple), Jail, Welfare Lodging, Hospital,Dormitory, Military Quarters, Hotel, andRooming House

DATE OF INTERVIEW
Months of interview are generally clusteredin the 3 months during which a particularround was conducted. However, for each roundthere are several hundred cases that wereassigned codes outside the 3-month range. There are also about 20 cases in most roundsfor which implausible month codes (i.e., 27,28) have been recoded to 99, unknown. Thoserespondents who were not present in earlierrounds were assigned the day and month ofinterview of the members of their householdsfor those earlier rounds.
