In both Truman Show and 1984, there is a sort of dictator, who controls everything that happens to the main character.

Comparison 1 “Big brother”

In both there are cameras that monitor everything the main character does.

Comparison 2 “Telescreens”

Both characters lost a parent and thought it was their fault. Later both main characters find out that their parent’s death was not their fault. For Truman, his father wasn’t dead; for Winston, his mother’s death wasn’t his fault.

Comparison 3 “Guilt”

In both cases, there exist a group of people specifically designed to keep order in the communities by automatically taking people who break the rules out of the world. In the Truman Show these people aren’t killed; in 1984 they are vaporized.

Comparison 4 “Thought police”

In both cases Winston and Truman are both secluded from the rest of the world. They are stuck in their own little area, and are forcibly kept there.

Comparison 5 “Confinement”

Both main characters are so believe in their rebellion so much that they are willing to die for it. Winston already considers himself a dead man, and Truman shouts “you’ll have to kill me” when the producers tried to stop him.

In the Truman Show our main character, Truman, is much more positive and enjoys his life. Even after he realizes he is captured he believes in himself and that he can escape.

In Truman show, Truman eventually escapes and leaves his confinement. In 1984 Winston is captured and kept.

Contrast 2 “outcome”

Page 10: 1984 vs. Truman Show

In 1984 Winston is aware of people watching him, and he always has known who. In Truman Show, Truman has no idea that he is being watched, and people do everything they can to stop him from knowing.

Contrast 3 “Knowledge”

Page 11: 1984 vs. Truman Show

These characters don’t face the same amount of danger. Truman is being protected, the producers even wear shirts that say “protect him, love him.” While with Winston he is in constant danger, from the thought police, random violence during hate week, being discovered, and from random bombs that attack people.

Contrast 4 “danger”

In Truman Show, Truman is allowed to have friends, family and a social life; however, these things are fake and the people are fed lines and don’t love him. In 1984 Winston is advised to not have social relationships and no love life; however, when he does make friends it is real, the relationships he makes are real.
