As part of its endeavours to contribute to fostering culture at its highest levels of expression, the Princess
of Asturias Foundation created a
The Princess of Asturias Foundation is a non-profit private institution whose essential aims are to contribute to extolling and promoting those scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of the universal heritage of humanity and to consolidate the existing links between the Principality of Asturias and the title traditionally held by the heirs to the Crown of Spain.
HM King Felipe VI was Honorary President of the Foundation since its creation in 1980 until his proclamation as King of Spain on 19th June 2014, following which HRH Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, Princess of Asturias, became the Honorary President of this institution which annually convenes the .
Aimed at rewarding the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions, these awards are granted in eight categories: the Arts, Literature, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Technical and Scientific Research, International Cooperation, Concord and Sports.
The Awards are presented at a solemn ceremony held each year at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

the . With the passage of time and thanks to the efforts of its conductors and members, it has
achieved well-deserved national and international prestige and has become one of Europe’s leading
amateur choirs. Until his death in 2018, Jesús López Cobos, 1981 Prince of Asturias Laureate for the
Arts, was joint honorary conductor of the Choir along with Krzysztof Penderecki, who received the same
award in 2001. In December 2007, the European Parliament distinguished the Choir via an extraordinary
acknowledgement “for its outstanding services to the European Union”. The was created in
1988 and the in 1990 as part of the ongoing mission of this initiative to harvest the
traditional love of Asturians for choral music at its highest level through constant educational endeavours.
The three choirs have served as a platform for training hundreds of voices and for keeping alive the close
relationship that Asturias has always had with music.
