    PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – JULY, 2012

I missed the Minter Show this past week; unavoidable due to family

circumstances. It is always at the top of my list of favorite shows. It’s always

a highlight in a crowded summer schedule of classic and vintage automobile

shows. Its beautiful setting and the high quality and diversity of the entrants

are such a treat. As we all know this year’s weather was less than perfect. It’s

a shame when you think of all the time and effort that goes into putting on a

    show like this.

Harv, Bob and Jerry start planning early on in the year working with Erin Minter and her staff to

ensure that all comes together as the well oiled machine that we see every year.

On behalf of all our club members, I want to once again want to thank Jerry, Harv and Bob along

with Erin and her staff for allowing our Club to participate in what is such a proud event.

On behalf of Bob, Jerry and Harv I want to extend their thanks to all the Club members who help

    year after year.

Lastly a special thanks to each of the entrants who braved the elements to display their pride and

    joy. LARRY

WELL, IT FINALLY HAPPENED. A WET MINTER!! AFTER SO MANY YEARS OF GREAT WEATHER, WE FINALLY HAD TO BREAK OUT THE UMBRELLAS. ON THE POSITIVE SIDE, THOUGH, THE TURNOUT OF DISPLAY CARS WAS EXCELLENT, CONSIDERING, WHICH SHOWED THE ESTEEM IN WHICH THE SHOW IS HELD BY SO MANY COLLECTOR CAR FOLKS. THESE PEOPLE ARE DIEHARDS!! AND YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT THE PEOPLE COMING THROUGH THE GATE WERE ALSO REAL FANS. I OVERHEARD A FELLOW TALKING ON A CELL PHONE, TELLING WHOEVER WAS ON THE OTHER END THAT HE WAS AT MINTER GARDENS, AND THERE WAS ONE HELLUVA CAR SHOW GOING ON!! I GUESS THE OTHER END SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THE WEATHER; THE GUY REPLIED “IT’S WORTH IT!” PRETTY MUCH ECHOES JERRY PARKHILL’S COMMENT– “THERE ARE SOME DAMN FINE CARS HERE!” TAKE A LOOK.....

ORIGINAL OWNER REUNITED WITH 1970 JAGUAR E-TYPE AFTER 42 YEARS

You may recall the white, right hand drive (RHD), 1970 Jaguar E-Type FHC of Stephen Way, Kamloops, sibling to Larry's left hand drive E-type, which came to last September's Hougen Park Picnic and was reunited with second owner Brian Lees. (See article in September, 2010 Hooter). Well, the story has gotten even better. Stephen's RHD car was built June 3, 1970, just 12 days after Larry's LHD car. After being on the production line together, the cars parted ways - Larry's car to a dealer in the Eastern U.S., Stephen's car to Henly's, London, England. But they have now both found their way to beautiful British Columbia. The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate showed Stephen's car was originally factory ordered as a personal export car by a Mr. W.M. Wainwright, Woodville, South Australia. Telephone directory and other internet searches had come up with no results for Mr. W. M. Wainwright in Australia, the UK, Canada or the USA. Henly's went out of business in the 1980's, so it appeared, as is often the case, the search for the original owner had reached a dead end. Stephen and Brian connected when Brian saw a picture of the distinctive white, RHD, Webasto sun roofed E-Type in a picture in the 2010 Brits 'round BC on the Old English Car Club website. Stephen took the opportunity at the 2011 Hougen Park Picnic to test Brian's memory of the 1980s. Brian was not sure what years he had even owned the car. From other discussions, Stephen was able to advise Brian he sold it in 1988. Brian went home and found a 1983 photograph of the car and on the reverse, the cars features, mileage (76,000) and price in the original owners writing. This was the ad from which Brian bought the car – in Vancouver. He racked his memory some more and thought the, then middle aged, seller was called Michael and was either a doctor or dentist. Hmm, maybe W.M. was Michael. More internet sleuthing brought up a website for a Dr. Michael Wainwright, an orthodontist with British parents and who grew up in Australia. This had to be worth pursuing. An e-mail to the website produced a response within 30 minutes – the original owner had been found. He was now 70 and nearing the end of his work career. All those questions, about why were things a certain way with the car, could be answered by the most authoritative source - the original owner. Unfortunately it was now late October, 2011, so a reunion would need to wait until the spring of 2012. A meeting of the original and current (5th) owner took place over a 3 hour lunch at the St George's Day, Fort Langley meet. Unfortunately, the E-Type could not make it that day, but some interesting car history came out as the Wainwrights' recalled 42 years ago. Michael, the son of a British chemical engineer, was born in Egypt and grew up in Australia from 6 years old. After obtaining a dental degree from University Adelaide and then a Masters from Indiana University, he had been married to his US bride, Jackie, for only two days before going to UK for an extended honeymoon and visit to his British roots. This was swinging London in the late 1960's and what better transportation for a new graduate, after 8 years of studying, and his new bride, than a British sports car.

  • 16After road testing a number of new vehicles including a Lotus Elan+2, Michael decided on one of the last two, right hand drive Jaguar E-Type Series 2, FHC cars, available for England delivery before production was changing to the larger 12 cylinder models. Only 1,071 right hand drive Jaguar E-type FHC Series 2 cars were produced between 1968 and 1970, the priority, as it was for much of 1960's Britain automotive industry, being left hand drive export models. Michael picked the white one, leaving the red one for another buyer. He preferred the cleaner lines of the FHC over the OTS. Planning to take the car back to Australia he had a Webasto sun roof installed. The car has power

steering, very rare for a Series 2 FHC. Michael cannot remember why that was ordered. After taking delivery in November 1970, (original Bill of Sale now also found), the car toured extensively throughout the British Isles, Scotland and Wales. When asked about the Jag’s top speed, Michael recalled a late night occasion on Britain’s M1 when driving along with an Aston Martin. Both were in excess of 140MPH before realising this was twice the then legal speed limit. Apparently, there was still some throttle left. The plan to return to Australia did not happen. An offer of a teaching position at the University of British Columbia brought the car to Canada after a required gap of taking the car out of Britain before one year of ownership to retain export sales tax exemption. This resulted in a car tour of Europe in a Jaguar E-Type - life long memories are made of this. Vineyards in France, the autobahns of Germany, mountain roads of the Alps and Italy (where the car was almost stolen) before shipping the car in a container to Toronto. After one year of ownership; it became a personal possession, not a taxable import. With a growing family, the two seat E-Type became less practical, particularly for infant car seats, and was reluctantly sold in 1983 with 76,000 miles. There was one occasion when, needing to attend a conference in San Francisco, a 1970's infant car seat was placed on the luggage shelf and the car driven from Vancouver, with the luggage shipped via Greyhound, (arriving late and making for some interesting business conference attire). The Jaguar became only a memory, reminded only by the original wooden steering wheel, damaged in an accident, now framed and hanging on a basement wall.

Michael, the original owner, now nearing the end of his work career was successfully reunited with his “graduation present” - a 1970 Jaguar E-Type - 42 years later, at the May 2012 All British Field Meet, Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. Michael reunited Stephen with the original steering wheel and the only item missing from the original toolkit - the Jaguar tire pressure gauge - now it is again complete. An attempt to get a picture with all the previous owners on the day was not successful and will be re-attempted at a future classic car event. The red Jaguar E-Type, (with the next consecutive serial number), not purchased in 1970, lives on in Manchester, England, (xkedata.com).
