1971 OUTLOOK

Added backfield speed, the return of 26 lettermen anda number of talented sophomores could blend into a for-mula that may see the Wolfpack recover from its frustrat-ing ways of a year ago when the record was a less-than-pleasing 3-7-1.Even Earle Edwards, a man who invariably follows the

“wait and see” policy, voiced cautious optimism followingthe Red-White spring game which saw the offense domi-nate the intra-squad battle with 11 touchdowns and a fieldgoal.

, VERSATILE ON OFFENSE“I think there’s more talent on the squad now than we’ve

had the last couple of years,” said the adroit Wolfpack headcoach. “With the material at hand, we certainly should bemore versatile on offense than we were last season.”

Edwards, however, qualified his enthusiastic commentwith the sobering observation that “we only have ten sen-iors back and that means we’ll be short of playingexperlence.”'A key to how well the Wolfpack fares this fall will de-

pend heavily on the performance at quarterback, a positionthat remains unsettled despite the return of both 1970lettermen. Senior Dennis Britt, who occupied the spot atthe conclusion of the season, and junior Pat Korsnick, hisearly season predecessor in the post, will resume theirbattle for starting honors in pre-season drills this fall andmay wind up sharing the signal-calling role.Pushing the two for the assignment and likely to see some

action is the sophomore tandem of Joe Giles and BruceShaw, and junior Gary Clements.

“Giles and Shaw proved pleasant surprises in the springgame,” said Edwards. “Both were impressive and threw theball pretty well.”

KENNEY LEADS RUNNERS

If Edwards and his staff can find the answer at quarter-back, then the rest of the offensive backfield should presentno problem. Pat Kenney, the team’s leading ground gainerlast season with a 4.7 average and a top nominee for all-conference honors this fall, returns to head a corps of high-stepping backs, which also includes Don Bradley. The flashy Kenney will team with fullback Gary Moser

to provide both experience and talent while the presence of

Willie Burden, Mike Stultz and Charley Young, all sopho-mores, should give State’s offense more explosive powerthan it’s packed for several seasons.

All three possess blistering speed and are rated superioropen-field runners. Burden, a blocky 195-pounder, figuresto be the starter at running back while Stultz and Youngwill serve as understudies to Kenney and Moser. On the offensive line, the Wolfpack will have three

starters back in the persons of Bill Culbertson at centerand guards Bill Yoest and John Saunderson. HeberWhitley and John Elliott are the top tackles, while GarySaul and Steve Lester will step up to man the flanks. Allfour earned letters as reserves last year.

EXPERIENCED DEFENSEThe Wolfpack definitely will have more experience on

defense with eight starters returning, but a lack of depthand some injury recoveries appear to be problems.Middle guard George Smith, a rugged competitor and an

all-ACC performer last year, tops the list of defensivereturnees along with end Clyde Chesney and safety VanWalker. But Smith and Chesney both underwent legoperations during the winter and did not take part inspring drills. Walker, a solid candidate for all-leaguehonors, led the secondary in 1970 with seven interceptions.

Linebacking figures to be a team strongpoint with thethreesome of Bryan Wall, Stauber Wilson and Ed Hoffmanreturning after fine sophomore apprenticeships a year ago.Other veterans back for another season are tackle RogerMcSwain and defensive backs Bill Miller and Tom Sieg-fried. Tackle Dan Medlin, a starter last year, missed springpractice because of academics and may not return.

SOPHS HAVE PROMISEMost promising among the defensive sophomores are

Dick Curran at tackle, Bobby Fill, a probable starter atcornerback, linebacker Ken Sheesley, and linemen RickDruschel and Bob Brooks.

State’s improved running game, which should see theteam exercising the option play more than in the past, should also perk up the passing attack. Best among thereceivers are Lester, Kenney and Pete Blocklin. The kicking assignments are still up for grabs. Korsnick

and end Mark Cassidy will vie for the punting duties whileMike Charron and Sam Harrell, who alternated the joblast year, are again candidates as place-kicking specialists.

COACH’S

COMMENTS

“We were quite pleased with spring practice, namelybecause of the fine effort and attitude. Both the playersand the coaches felt we made a good deal of progress. Weworked very hard on some of our shortcomings that wereapparent last season and I thought the results of our springgame indicated we had achieved a certain amount ofsuccess.“Our quarterbacks (Dennis Britt and Pat Korsnick) seem

to have profitedfrom their ‘education’ of last season, whichthey played without previous experience. This was true inother positions, too, where we used so many new men. Anexample is the linebacking corps. Three men (StauberWilson, Bryan Wall and Ed Hoffman) started from scratchlast season, handled the job pretty well, and all three willbe back.“One of the best things to come out of our spring drills

was the evidence of considerable ability among some of ourrising sophomores. Willie Burden and Charley Younglooked good among the backs and so did Bruce Shaw,Donnie Hall and Bob Divens. A number of the linemenwill also figure prominently in our plans. Included in thisgroup are Howard Bradburn, Rick Druschel and BobBrooks, as well as several others who have shown very goodpotential.“The schedule, as usual, is a challenge since we play all

of the conference teams. The outsiders won’t be any easier, particularly teams like Miami and Penn State. But we’vealways favored a strong, representative schedule and we’reglad we have one this season.“At present, we are somewhat optimistic, a trait that is

inherent in all teams starting fresh again in the fall. Itwould be very helpful to get off to a favorable start, butthat is something we won’t know about until the actualseason begins.”
