1972 - Top of the Pops7 July 1972 - Dunstable Civic HallSilver MachineHawkwind weren't keen on appearing on Top of the Pops, so the BBC filmed them live Dunstable Civic instead. Classic. Aroundthirty minutes of film from this gig is thought to exist (Dave Brock interview in Record Collector 162 - February 1993), with EMIperhaps having even more in the vaults. A few seconds of Stacia dancing au naturale to Orgone Accumulator was featured on the2001 Top Ten Progressive Rock Bands programme on Channel 4. This looks suspiciously like more footage from the same gig, butit's hard to be sure...

1973 - Empire Pool, Wembley27 May 1973, Empire Pool, WembleyThe 2001 Top Ten of Progressive Rock show included a few seconds of film that probably originate from this gig - is the whole seton film somewhere? Who knows? If you do, let me know!!

1973 - The Final Programme Hawkwind filmed a scene for this 1973 film of the Moorcock novel. It ended up on the cutting room floor, but here's a rare still ofMichael Moorcock, actor Jon Finch (as Jerry Cornelius) with Dik Mik, Robert Calvert, Nik Turner, Stacia, Simon King, Dave Brock,Del Dettmar & Lemmy). Maybe the deleted scene will turn up as an extra on DVD one day? The Final Programme is a film byRobert Fuest.

1973 - Swedish TV14 or 15 September 1973 - SwedenSwedish TV filmed a festival that Hawkwind played (either Mantorps or Gothenberg). Rumour has it that all of Hawkwind's set wasfilmed but when the program was shown the following year, only part of Master of The Universe was featured.

1975 - Watchfield Festival23 August 1975 - Watchfield, UKNow I probably wouldn't even bother to mention this if it wasn't for the fact 1970's film is so thin on the ground, but a recentBBC4 documentary on the history of Travellers featured a couple of seconds of Hawkwind playing at the Watchfield Festival. Youcan download the clip from the Hawkfanfare site.

1977 - The Marc Bolan Show14 September 1977 - Quark, Strangeness & CharmThe band appeared as a 4-piece (minus Dave Brock) to mime along to Quark, Strangeness & Charm. 1978 - Hawklords Promos24 November 1978 - Uxbridge, UKAnother reference from the Dave Brock interview in Record Collector 162 - February 1993, this time to a video made by Charismato accompany the Roadhawks album. A correspondent on the old Listserv Hawkwind Discussion Group suggests these were of theband doing Automoton & 25 Years. An appearance of the Hawklords on Italian TV is also mentioned there. The Sonic Assassinsbook by Ian Abrahams reports the Uxbridge gig in November 1978 was filmed and may be the source for all these clips a fewseconds of which were glimpsed on the 2001 Top Ten of Progressive Rock show.

1979 - Masters of the Universe Tour Film Nov/Dec 1979 - Lighthouse is included on the Hawkwind Video Collection 1979-89, a now unavailable VHS tape. No info at the moment on exactlywhen or where this was filmed, but the track was a regular in the November/December UK tour. This clip is included on the Startling Stories: Do Not Panic Volume 3 - it's very dark with just a few flashes of the light show to setit apart from an audience audio recording.

Both these clips are included on Startling Stories: Do Not Panic Volume 1. Only interesting due to the lack of any other qualityfilms from the time.

Also around this time Kevin Smith started, with the bands approval, making single camera videos of many of the concerts. I'm notsure whether it's Kevin's films that are the source material for the 'official' VHS videos released in the early 90's by HawkwindMerchandising. 1982 filmed gigs specifically mentioned on Kevin's website include Oxford (14 November).Choose Your Masques tour, Glasgow (19 October) was one of the titles offered by Hawkwind Merchandising on VHS.A video entitled Live at Edinburgh Playhouse 1982 (21 October) was released in 1983.

We stayed up allthe previous night making new video cables to run four instead of two cameras, drove to London for the extra cameras and filmschool crew making it to Ipswich for the gig at 4pm on the Friday. The gig was filmed in the most chaotic way, but it worked...The Hawkwind tape was a milestone in that it was the first of our videos to feature conceptual, or made up footage along with themusic. The problem was that there were long periods of darkness in the live master tape and something had to be done about it.So I created footage in a variety of ways, including some incredible staggered sequences discovered accidentally whilst rewindingthe master tape through a time base corrector. The finished release resulted in our best selling tape to date, a No.1 in the videochart and some rave reviews in the music press."Order it from Amazon.com - (out of stock at amazon.co.uk)

Hawkwind go full on psychedelic, performing bona fide classics ripped from rock n roll’sunderbelly. As always the stage-show is a melting pot of audio-visual lunacy. 20 years does nothing to dilute their relentlesseccentricity, as the stage becomes a virtual battlefield of noise and melody, mesmerising mantras and nightmare images."You can read a review of this at Starfarer.net.Order it from Amazon.com - (out of stock at amazon.co.uk)

The following is from VoicePrint (publishers of thecompanion double live CD): Hawkwind made this rare TV appearance on a music show called "Bedrock". It was a strange affair, asalthough it was filmed live the set was interrupted a few times for the Bedrock team to make adjustments. Equally as strange, was that the lighting levels were unusually high (for a Hawkwind concert at least), this was so that viewers had something towatch, as the show was to be screened across all the ITV regions. Hawkwind's screen projections, because of the high lightinglevels, had to be filmed the following day, and placed over the footage.Wind of Change was omitted from the DVD release (though it was on the VHS video, but can be downloaded from Starfarer'sHawkwind Downloads Page).

It showsthe band at there most creative and over the top, with then frontman Ron Tree wearing a vast array of bizarre costumes designedspecially for the tour alongside various performance artists. The band are paired down to a four piece but have lost non of the rawpower one associates with archetypal Hawkwind".

2001 - Top Ten of Progressive Rock, C4 2002 - When Rock Ruled the World, BBC 2004 - Classic Albums: Ace of Spades, BBCHawkwind were at Number 8 on this compilation show which featured some interesting snippets - interviews with DaveBrock,Lemmy & Nik Turner as well as old footage of Stacia on-stage from 1972, a Bob Calvert clip and snippets from otherreleased material. This was followed in 2002 by a similar programme from the BBC: When Rock Ruled the World which usedalmost identical clips, presumably from the same source, with similar quotes from Lemmy. Classic Albums features interviews withDave Brock and Lemmy on the Hawkwind days - going over the same old ground as Top 10 Prog Rock. Brief clip of 'Motorhead'(the song).

2002 - Making of 'Destruction of the Death Generator'December 2002 - WiltshireThere's a bizarre story about the Ministry of Defence producing a film about the making of Destruction Of The Death Generator. This was going to be Hawkwind's "next epic project.. written in conjunction with Michael Moorcock". (in fact it eventually becameTake Me To Your Leader, with no Moorcock involvement). Read all about it for yourself over at Starfarer.net. Perhaps not surprisingly, this film has yet to appear.

2005 - Spirit of the Age Launch Party1 September 2005 - LondonJust a few seconds of Matthew Wright introducing the band at the Spirit of the Age launch can be downloaded from Starfarer'sHawkwind Downloads Page.
