give back to him the forfei tedl i fe , change his nature again

into harmo ny with Hi s own,

and defeat the dev i l . But this

must be re st or ed on leg al

grou nds. God cannot ig no re

man's hideous transg res sio n.

It must be punis hed. If man is

restored to God, it must be on

grounds that wi l l not pauperize

man nor ro b him of his self

respect. But it must also be

upon legal grounds that will

pe r fec t ly just ify man in the si ghtof God and g ive him as good a

standing as though he had never

sinned.

Justice makes her demand that

man pay the penalt y of his

c r i m e . However , man is unable

to pay even the in te res t on it .

Th e penalty of man's t rans

gress ion is hell . This unpardon

able sin of tre aso n agai nst God

is the basic reason for the

incarnation and substitutionary

sacr if ice of God 's be loved Son.

The inca rnat ion and the sub

stitutionary sac ri fic e of God 's

Son go hand in hand. Because

man cannot save himself, God

must p rovide a red eem er. The

penalty of man's t reason must

be met by God if man is to be

saved.

Ma n had no soo ner fallen underthe domi nion of his ene my than

the great heart of God began to

plan his red emp tio n. At the very

gates of Eden f rom which man

had been driven a sacrifice was

slain, blood was spi ll ed, and a

garm ent of atonement was

offered to man. (T he word

"atonement" means a cover ing. )

Man had stri pped hi ms el f and

stood naked in the pr es en ce of

just ice. God made a covering of

skins fo r Adam, which was atype of atonement for his soul .

At the v e r y beginning of man's

existence on ear th God gave the

blood cov enant , and on the

grounds of this e v e r y man who

en ter ed into it had the prom is e

of redemption f rom all his si ns.

Adam hi mse lf , the father of allthe sin, heartaches, and tears of

the ag es , has a rig ht to this

promise of a final redemption

f rom his own gui lt . Th e shedding

of the blood of innocent animals

wa s onl y a type of that which

wa s to co me . God made

prov i s ion for man's penalty for

sin. Th e penalty is spiri tual

death and h el l. Someone must go

there and pay man's penalty,

for th er e is not a man who can

represent the human race be fore God. Ne ith er is ther e a man

who can stand for himself befo re

God, for the whole human race

is under indictment.

A s soon as man fel l , God began

to speak through prophe ts

promising that a redeemer

should co me who would brea k

Satan's dominion and restore to

man his lost domi nio n. In the

prophetic utterances in Genesis

3:15 co nce rni ng the "Co mi ng

One," we see the base in the

great oratory of redemption

Hi s Lo rd sh ip and domin ion.

"And I w i l l put enmity between

thee and the woman , and be

tween thy seed and her see d;

it sha ll br ui se thy head, and thou

shalt bru ise his h eel ." He is

going to b rea k the domi nion of

Satan, He is going to set men

f r ee , He is going to bru ise the

head of the ser pen t.

In Isa iah 7:14 we have a very

important statement of the

coming redeemer. "Therefore

the L ord himself shall g ive you

a sign; Behold, a v i rg in shall

conce ive , and bear a son, and

shall call his name Immanuel."

The child would be cal led

Immanuel, or Incarnation. Here

and humanity.

In Isai ah 9:6 we rea d, "F or

unto us a chi ld is born, unto

us a son is given: and the

gov ern men t shall be upon his

sho uld er: and his name shall be

ca l led Wonderful, Counsellor,

Th e mighty God, The eve rla st

ing Fathe r, Th e Pri nc e of

P e a c e . " In other wo rd s, He shallcome as a ru le r to have

authority and dominion.

Of all prophetic refer enc es to

the c omi ng Savi our, His name in

this ve rs e in Isaiah is perhaps

the most striking. "Wonderful"

"Counselo r"—the great lawye r

of God's family . "Mighty God"

no Jewish mother would dare

to ca ll her chil d "Mighty God,"

for it would be rank blasphemy,

and both she and her chi ld wouldbe a re ve al er of the Father, as

we find Hi m in the gospel of

John. "Pr ince of Pe ac e" —t o

on e day bring ever las tin g peace.

We can s ee one of the cl ea re st

picture s of the i nca rna tio n—

wh y Jesus cam e in John 1:14,

"And the Word was made flesh,

and dw elt a mong us, (and we

beheld hi s g l o ry , the g lory as

of the only bego tten of the

Fat her ,) full of gr ac e and

truth." Here, in capsule form,

we have the s to ry of the union

of deity and humanity, a child

conceived in a vi rg in 's womb

by a supernatural manifestation

because man's sin had necessi

tated a second mi ra cl e great er

than the mi ra cl e of creat ion to

encompas s his redemptio n from

the p ow er and gui lt of his own

transgressions. Jesus came and

dwel led in mor tal flesh that wemight be eternally reunited with

the Father.
