Australian Rules Football, The King ofAll Football Codes begins its 1970 seasonthis week-end.More than 300,000 are expected to at-

tend the grand opening in Victoria,South Australia, Western Aust~alia,N.S.W. and Queensland.With a big influx of interstate players,

a record year is predicted fo'r Sydneyfootball.

1::t 1::t 1::tAUSSIE RULES RADIO SEGMENTTiger Black, 2KY's popula,r sporting

commentator, will interview prominentAussie Rules personalities each Saturdaymorning over Radio 2KY.His "Shelleys Sports Personalities" ses-

sion goes on air at 11 o'clock.On Saturday, March 28th, he inter-

viewed the new League Secretary, LionelBeale while David Sykes the newly ap-pointed state coach and Emmanuel Keri-niaua from St. George, the leading goal-kicker last season will be guests onfuture programmes.We hope to have a personality on the

programme each week.Tiger Black will also announce the

week-end Australian Rules fixtures dur-ing the season. - -"Spectator enjoyment-that's the pro-

mise for 1970" said the new League Sec-retary, Lionel Beale, when speaking onTiger Blacks session on Radio 2KY lastSaturday morning. A good g",me towatch.-the paying public deserve thevery bes't and I want to see them get thebest.

1::t * *Passing through Sydney during the

week was Ted Rippon, former star Es-sendon ruckman and centre half back ofthe early forties.Ted is now widely known as a com-

mentator on Radio 3KZ and Channel 2.He will broadcast todays Richmond-

Fitzroy clash at the MCG, where thematch which will be attended by HerMajesty the Queen and Prince Philip, isexpected to attract a crowd in excessof 100,000.Incidentally, Ted's only appearance in

the Victorian State side was againstN.S.W.

1::t * (:rEast Sydney and Sydney Naval have

exchanged captains.After two years as Naval captain, Ray

Houston returns to his old team Eastsas captain-coach.A fine player, Ray also had three suc-

cessful seasons with VFL club, St. Kilda.Last year's Easts captain Bob Hankin-

son has accepted the position as SydneyNaval captain coach.A brilliant player Bob should prove a

decided acquisition to the Demons.1::t 1::t 1::t

Two weeks ago VFL team Fitzroy,journeyed to Adelaide to play the S.A.Tigers, Glenelg.Fitzroy received such a battering from

Glenelg that Kevin Murray captaincoach of the Lions, stated that his teamwould never play a pre-season game inAdelaide again.VFL Tigers, Richmond, said that they

were not afraid of the S.A. Tigers andwould not hesitate to play them.It is now history that Richmond sil-

enced Glenelg in no uncertain mannerand rightly hold the current title as thebest in Australia.

1::t 1::t 1::tSouth Sydney one of the glamor teams

of the thirties will be missing from thesenior competition for the first time thisyear.The Red and Greens have fallen on

hard times in recent years and in the in-terests of the code in Sydney, Souths willplay in the Reserve Grade competition.It is to be hoped that South Sydney

can build their side up as they have pro-duced some magnificent players in theyears gone by.

1::t 1::t 1::tYou can't keep a good man down!Last year's East Sydney coach Bill

Quinn was seen last week-end assistingin Easts' final trial match by acting asumpire.A former umpire Bill, is always on

hand doing something in the interestsof the code.

1::t 1::tFormer Fitzroy player

been appointed captaintown for this season.Dave replaces Gordon Bowman, who

has retired after a long and outstandingcareer in four States.A dynamic personality, Sykes should

prove a worthy successor to Bowman,with his vigorous non stop brand offootball.

to the League slogan for the 70's.Promotion- Presen tation- Performance

and predicted a best ever season forAustralian Rules in Sydney in 1970.After an excellent dinner Mr. Hart

spoke in glowing terms of the work doneover the past 36 years for AustralianRules by Ken Ferguson-and of the re-cord and respect with which Ken isknown throughout all of Australia.A long list of succeeding speakers 'y"ith

both long and short association with KenFerguson added lustre to what had beensaid.On behalf of Western Suburbs Club

Limited and the League Mr. J. K. Stew-art (League Vice President) made a pre-sentation to Ken and led the guests in"For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."Ken Ferguson when at last given his

opportunity to speak was in a reminis-cent mood.The names of many old timers of the

code were mentioned, the good old daysat Erskineville, South Sydney, Newtown,Rosebery (of course) the Grand oldman of Australian Rules-Mr. JimPhelan.Ken Ferguson admits to 36 years of

service to the Code-those are calendaryears-it can be said that his hours ofwork and effort would be nearly twolifetimes than one.Ken Ferguson very graciously handed

his torch to the new Secretary, Mr.Lionel Beale who freely admitted thathe had a wonderful example to followand would need help and co-operationfrom all if he was to emulate "Mr. Aus-tralian Rules."This is not goodbye to Ken because

now he can eo to the games each week-end and meet all his friends and he willalso be writing his memoirs.

EAST SYDNEY CLUB NOTESWell the Pre-season is behind us, with

lessons learnt along the line; we wouldhave wished to hoist this flag althoughwe really didn't fare too badly after all.The matches at Olds Park were hard

battles as expected. St. George were notabout to allow us any latitude, piling onthe goals early in the piece. In the12.30 duel we were able to contain theDragon's fire, with great goal kickingby Dave Amundsen (4), Brian Ratcliffe(3), Ben Haagsmar, Geoff Langdon, GeoffScott (2 each) and John Wood with one,givin gus a five goal win.Unfortunately in the main game the

story was reversed, allowing the Saintsto go marching on too long. During thesecond half our boys fired well enoughbut the gap was too wide to bridge inthe remaining time. Goal scorers JimSkews, Gary and Bob Wilton, JohnBranch, Rob Ellis, Dave Goddard andKeith Liddelow did their best for us

with Ron F'itzpatrick and John Robertsably assisting.Congrats to Bob Wilton for achieving

best and fairest, and thanks to Wills forthe award.We had a ball over the Easter week
