An inspirational life. The Ruakaka Village community turned out in force on Saturday 4 September for the Community Pride clean up morning. I went down to take some photographs and there were people of all ages wearing blue plastic gloves filling green council supplied bags with rubbish picked up from streets and reserves. This could be the start of something big, a real positive new start for the village, which has been troubled by graffiti and arson attacks in recent times. Congratulations to the organisers for involving such a wide cross-section of the community. I hope people get out to listen to the local government candidates when they come to Waipu on Monday the 13th, and Ruakaka, on Tuesday 21st of this month. I have put details about both meetings (with bright yellow and orange backgrounds so they will get noticed) on the inside back cover (page 23) of this issue. The voter interest in these three yearly elections is usually better in Bream Bay than other parts of the district but, even so, it is appallingly low. If we want good governance in our regional and district councils and health board then we need to make informed choices about the people we elect to these bodies.I have thoroughly enjoyed interviewing and writing about the career of former Northland Harbour Board tug master Ray Wilson. Ray went to work as a deck boy on a scow at the age of 15 and has had many adventures in his long career at sea. This article (on pages 15,16 and 17 of this issue) is a real lesson in New Zealand history. Ray has either played an active role or been affected by a number of the important events in this country over the past 78 years. I think many people will find his story inspiring. For young people setting out on a career he shows how, from humble beginnings, you can rise to important positions with real responsibility. For working people he is an example of someone who enjoyed and excelled in his job and took pride in the skills he attained. For working parents he describes how he struggled and found a way to balance family responsibilities with his career. Ray’s involvement with the Mercy Ships, captaining boats taking medical teams and supplies to remote parts of the Pacific, shows how retirement can sometimes be a beginning, not and end and emphasises just how valuable and useful the accumulated skills of all those years of family life and work can be.

Bream Bay College is looking for a photograph of Dr McBirney to hang in the school foyer. The McBirney Award is the highest honour at Bream Bay College. The award commemorates the work Dr. McBirney did as the first doctor in the district from 1954 until his death in 1962. The members of the McBirney Trust (which administers this award) want to know if there is anyone in the district who is in contact with either of Dr. McBirney’s two children, Margaret or Robert, who live in Auckland, in the hope they may be able to supply a photograph taken during their father’s years in Bream Bay. Please contact the College – 432 8226 if you can assist.

The wild pig, which attacked a man in Camellia Ave Ruakaka on 13 August, has possibly found its way back into bush in Prescott Rd. Mark Zelstra said on the same afternoon as the pig had appeared in the Ruakaka Beach area he was called by his neighbour to shoot a wild pig, which he had spotted amongst his sheep. Mark was relaxing after a busy day at work so didn’t feel like shooting a pig but went out to take a look. “I must have got too close because it went for me.” The pig, which chased Mark was a sow which he estimated weighed around 150lbs. “It was brown with greenie white patches. We have a lot of black pigs around here. I hadn’t seen one like that before.”Mark said he didn’t stay around long enough to notice if the pig had tusks but points out that sows as well as boars have these, although a sow’s tusks are usually smaller. The pig which had swum across the Ruakaka River, ran through the Ruakaka camping ground and attacked a man earlier that day, was described as a large tusked boar. Children travelling home on the Ruakaka school bus that afternoon had seen a pig running along State Highway One in the direction of Prescott Rd. For two weekends in a row the Department of Conservation sent a pig hunter down to the Ruakaka area to hunt for the pig in conservation duneland without success.

for silage – a month earlier then usual. Ali said the combination of good grass growth through the winter and having reduced the size of his beef herd during the drought has resulted in plentiful grass. He is hopeful of getting an early crop of silage and later a crop of hay to fill his empty hay sheds. Spring calving has almost finished and “It’s been great.”Less water in the ground has meant ground temperatures are warmer. “We don’t have to off graze animals on sand pads (to reduce pugging in paddocks). Its very labour intensive if you have to do this. Calving has been very relaxed.” He has been feeding palm kernel and maize to his milking herd to help with the low fibre issue.

Public land is just that “Public” and no one can be denied access to it, so this needs to remedied. Walkways, cycle ways and footpaths are basic infrastructure which need Council’s full attention. If we can find money to build a bridge and walkways around the Town Basin, why can’t we find money for footpath upgrading and extensions in Bream Bay?To me this is priority Council business as it caters for the young, old and tourists.

Thank-you for the opportunity to reply. We are fully aware that there are public strips along these cliff tops.We continually get requests to open these up, however the rules regarding public safety need to be seriously considered. In places men-tioned we have vertical drops of five metres and more, and some very dangerous un-dermining of the cliff faces. This situation becomes an OSH issue, and could result in WDC having to fence the cliff edge. The public can walk along a beautiful beach and can view the harbour from many vantage spots along the coast.

Phil Halse

It is unfortunate that the cliff edge particularly along the western end of One Tree Point has receded dramatically and is dangerous in many areas where erosion has undermined what at first glance appears to be solid ground. Because of the safety aspect of access to the full cliff edge particularly along the western end, specially designed access points have been installed to allow easier and safe access to the beach from various points along the cliffs. These have re-placed a variety of privately installed stairways which were not easily accessible to the public and which had significant safety issues. Walkways along riparian strips are highly desirable and have been achieved in many local areas – the Waipu Cove to Lang’s Beach track has been a huge com-munity/WDC collaborative success thanks, in main, to Alan McKenzie’s diligence – but in some areas it is more difficult to achieve attractive access bearing in mind that public safety is paramount”. Phil and I continue to work with the community on a variety of projects to develop better access to the coastline, particularly for the less able and to ensure that coastal erosion control together with public entitlement and safety continue to be addressed as high priority issues”.

Shelley Deeming

This needs to be remedied.

LETTERS

Letters to the Editor are very welcome.Send them to The Bream Bay News, RD2, Waipu 0528, email them to: [email protected] or you can leave them at Bream Bay Office Services in the Ruakaka Shopping Centre or at The Thistle in Waipu .

Where have all our reserves gone to? In One Tree Point strips of public land around the cliff tops have been fenced off by private land owners illegally preventing public access. This is disgraceful! It is high time action was taken to open up public land for public enjoyment. We could have wonderful cycle and walk-ways around our cliffs, and would certainly attract tourists and asso-ciated economic growth to the area if we did so.I invite readers to visit the Whangarei District Council GIS Maps. Where have all our reserves gone?

Editor’s note: At Rosalene’s suggestion I put her question about private appropria-tion of public land along the One Tree Point Cliffs to each of the three candidates standing for election to the Bream Bay Ward of the Whangarei District Council in the upcoming local government elections.

Chris Carter

It’s an OSH issue.

Public safety is paramount.

Acacia Longifolia, also known as the Waihopo Wattle, is in danger of taking over the native dune vegetation in some parts of Bream Bay. The Australian import was planted in coastal locations to stabalise sand and as an ornamental plant that would thrive in dry conditions but it has spread rapidly around the Ruakaka beach area and is making steady progress along the Department of Conservation’s coastal land towards Waipu. Several years ago Bream Bay Drive residents won a Northland Regional Council Weed Busters award for their efforts to eliminate it from the dunes in front of their homes where it’s thick leafy growth was threatening to obscure their sea views. Members of the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust have spent many Sunday morning

Acacia Longifolia - get rid of it now before it takes over our dunes.

working bees uprooting small plants and chainsawing down larger ones and painting the stumps with herbicide on conservation land south of the Paradise Shores subdivision. It is an ongoing task, as the seed can remain viable in the ground for up to 50 years. “It must have been here for some time”, said Lisa Forester of the Northland Regional Council as it has taken quite a firm hold in some parts of Northland. “Just north of Kaitaia it is really horrendous in some places forming a thick forest on duneland. In Ruakaka where it hasn’t yet got to this stage, people should be acting to get it out now.”

Now is a good time to attack this weed species, as its light yellow flowers are evident in many coastal gardens and empty sections.

When Tim Condor of New Zealand Transport Agency announced there is no proposal to close any of the intersections into Waipu he got a round of applause from the 64 strong audience at the Waipu Residents and Ratepayers Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 25 August. Rosemary Neave the WRRA facilitator had opened the meeting saying that there were three good ways to fill a hall in Waipu – one to announce a marine reserve in Bream Bay , the second to propose a multi purpose concrete skatepark anywhere in Waipu and the third to suggest that one of the town’s intersections onto SH1 be closed. Mr. Condor said that he imagined the idea had come about as a result of the NZTA objections to the draft Waipu Structure Plan which had proposed large new intensive residential living areas in the town. NZTA had concerns because of the impact of this amount of development on the roading infrastructure. Mr. Condor said he understood the issue had been resolved as the expanded residential areas in the structure plan have now been substantially reduced. “There is no need for NZTA to oppose anything that is now being proposed.”

He explained the NZTA had a policy that if there was a new development, such as a big new shopping mall in Waipu and a major unplanned upgrade of the highway and intersections would be necessary, than they expected that the developers would contribute to the cost of the upgrade. However, Rosemary pointed out, “It isn’t just Waipu people using those intersections.

Representative of the New Zealand Transport Agency answer questions in Waipu

Announcement there are no plans to close any intersection wins applause.

Councillor Halse - We pay taxes. NZTA shouldn’t be claiming contributions from our developers.

People using the twin coast discovery road also use them. The flow on from this will be an increase in the price of land in Waipu. And Councillor Phil Halse said, “We pay taxes for the state highway and now NZTA is trying to claim money from our developers. Developers are not all bad people. They stimulate the economy and create jobs. We want them in our district.”

Safety improvements planned for Nova Sco-tia intersection

Residents of Shoemaker Rd. asked about the safety of the Shoemaker Rd./ State Highway One intersection. They said a development in Ferry Rd. had been required to fund an upgrade of the Shoemaker Rd./SH1 intersection as part of its subdivision consent and asked why the upgrade had not been done. Brian Rainford, senior traffic safety engineer for NZTA in Northland said he understood the development hadn’t yet been undertaken. A southbound deceleration taper for the intersection had been suggested as an appropriate road safety mitigation should an increase in traffic volume due to the new development justify this work. Justin Nops said he believed the Shoemaker Rd. intersection should have a shoulder to pull over and turn from. He said this should be “a fundamental principle” for intersections all along the state highway. Mr. Rainford said the government had recognised that intersections need upgrading and as part of its Safe Journeys strategy he expected that this would be given increased priority. Another suggestion was that a yellow no passing line should be drawn down the middle of the highway at the Shoemaker intersection.

Cove Rd. a “death trap” for pedestrians and cyclists.

He said, “the police recorded crash history for Shoemaker Rd and the Braigh and subsequent calculated intersection crash rate is below the national average for this type of intersection. “While it is appreciated that unrecorded crashes occur, we also factor this in when considering priority for remedial improvement work.”

Why are South Island roads so much better than Northland roads?

Lyn Jordan raised the issue of Cove Road saying it was sometimes used as a state highway when traffic needed to be diverted from SH1 if there was an accident blocking the road. She said she lived close to where the 80k speed restriction ends and despite a school bus stop just 25 metres inside the 80k zone vehicles tended to speed up when they see the 100k sign ahead. Lyn said many people in Waipu like to cycle or walk and as there is no footpath or shoulder on this road, it was “a death trap.”

Ferry Road developer to fund Shoemaker Rd. intersection upgrade if increased traffic gener-ated makes it necessary

Mr. Rainford said the NZTA monitors the crash history and safety performance of all State Highway intersections annually including the Waipu intersections and the only one of the three causing concern was the Nova Scotia Rd. intersection. He said some work is planned to improve visibility and provide a deceleration taper for southbound traffic which would address some of the problems.

Police recorded crash rate for Shoemaker Rd. and The Braigh intersections below nationao average .

Ritchie Guy said he had recently been in the South Island and the roads down there where much better than Northland’s roads. “I think I must have passed 12 cars between Oamaru and Dunedin. He asked why with much higher traffic volumes Northland’s roads are not better funded. Mr. Rainford said the chip used on South Island roads is better quality than that in the North Island and the low density of traffic also contributed to the good state of the roads. However, he said that six of the governments seven priorities for big roading projects for the next decade were in the North Island and one of them – an upgrade of the road between Puhoi and Wellsford was for Northland.

Councillor Halse asked about the recently imposed 80k speed restriction over the Brynderwyn ranges. He said NZTA should be improving the road and making the travel time between Auckland and Whangarei faster. After the meeting Mr. Rainford commented to the Bream Bay News that the travel time difference made by the new speed restriction is “about 30 seconds.”He said this calculation was made in the difference in travel time on the North side of the Brynderwyn Hills as there is no effect on the south side because you could not previously safely drive any faster than 80km/hr there anyway.

Re - the new 80k speed restriction over the Brynderwyns

Rosemary asked about the restrictions the NZTA places on signage on the highway. “We have been fighting to keep our piper sign up on the highway. One of the things for a place like Waipu just off the state highway is how do we let people know this is a good place to stop. Mr. Rainford admitted to being the person responsible for the orders to remove signs. He said Waipu has more signage than most places. “You have eight symbols on your sign when the rules say there should only be four. Our policy is that signs should be based on need not on wants.”

How can Waipu let travellers know about its facilities when the NZTA restricts signage on the highway?

He suggested that Waipu businesses talk to the road safety co-ordinator about organising a driver reviver campaign in Waipu over a long weekend. He said 18% of the crashes on the stretch of road between the Brynderwyns and Whangarei are due to driver fatigue, which is much higher than the national average of 12%, and he would like to see this level reduced.

Suggested long weekend Driver Reviver campaign in Waipu.

Three generations of princesses: Carla Gordon (left) with her grand-daughter 15 month old Sariah and daughter in law - Ashika Gordon.

There was an Hawaiian theme at this year’s Princess Ball held at the Lifepoint Church hall on Friday 3 September. The walls were decorated with Pacific Island styled designs, ball goers wore lei and the floors were strewn with flowers. One hundred and eighty women and girls attended the ball which is an intergenerational affair. In the words of organiser Sandra Currie the purpose of the event is “to celebrate who we are and our community.”Sandra said the ball was well supported by Orrs Pharmacy and the retailers at the Marsden Cove shops who provided goods given out as prizes.

Right: Maxine Hiki, aged 11, looked every bit a Hawaiian princess with her frangipani lei.

A methamphetamine lab was located in a rental property in rural Maungaturoto. This is the second P-lab located in the Bream Bay policing area in 1 month, after the first was located and dismantled in Waipu by Auckland Police. In both situations offenders have been apprehended and charged. Its great to be detecting and clean-ing these cooks and dealers away, and further Bream Bay meth and cannabis dealers are currently being looked into by Police. We will not stop putting the pressure on these people.

It was disappointing to see that three young Bream Bay locals were caught allegedly drink driving over the weekend 27th -28th August on Ruakaka roads. A 19 - year - old man, a 21 - year - old man, and a 24 - year - old woman will all be appearing in the Whangarei Court on drink/drive related charges. Local Police as well as the dedicated TAG booze bus will continue to target drink/drivers in this community.

Over three nights on 17th, 18th and 19th August the Bream Bay Takeaways was broken into. The offender smashed a window each time, and on the first night entered and took a large quantity of confectionery. The damage and lost stock has cost the store owner $420. A 14 year old Ruakaka youth has admitted the offending to Police This youth had also recently smashed his way into the Supervalue Super-market using a sledge-hammer. All matters have been referred to Whangarei Police Youth Aid.

Constable Dan Hales will be holding a meeting at the One Tree Point Yacht Club, Thursday 4 November at 6pm, for people interested in being part of a community patrol group. This patrol group will work on a roster and conduct patrols at random dates and times, working together with Police to improve and maintain the safety of the OTP community. A member of Community Patrols New Zealand (CPNZ) will be speaking and assisting in the initiation of the patrol group.I look forward to seeing you there. Constable Dan Hales, Ruakaka Police.

On the evening of 3 Sept between 10pm and 7am 2 concrete Koru statue’s were sto-len from 352 One Tree Point Road, One Tree Point. Bream Bay College Under 16’s vs Rodney College @ BBC ( 18/8/10) Perfect conditions greeted players for the re-match vs Rodney College after our earlier encounter with their strong Under 16s side. Once again they proved to be the better opponents, linking solid forwards play with structured set-piece moves in the backs. The first half was very much a one-sided affair with Bream Bay de-fending most of the half. Having Tim Murray at hooker secured some good lineout and scrum ball, but the backs were starved. New player Kahi Tipene had a couple of strong runs and was unlucky on two occasions not to get across the line. After the break, we shifted Josh Harding into the forwards and shuffled around a few others, which saw a dramatic increase in ball retention and the backs were able to open up the game. Jake Moffat scored a solid try in the corner after a sequence of forward pick and goes. Not long after, Josh Dunn did much the same. Dalton Bar-ribal showed good skills with the boot slotting a nice conversion. Rodney College continued to batter us and there were prolonged periods of defending in our own half, with Rodney scoring a number of good tries. The rematch was a much fairer outing this time, in terms of player size and skill, but it was Rodney College who dominated the game from start to finish. Many thanks to Maria Northin for Rodney College and the players for a great couple of games. Final Score RC 30 - 12 BBC ( HT RC 15-BBC 0) Loss. Tries- Jake Moffat , Joshua Dunn Conversion : Dalton Barribal Players of the day - Forwards - Tim Murray Backs -Kahi Tipene NRU Under 15’s Tournament @ Hikurangi ( 25/8/10)Game One : BBC vs Kerikeri High School Up against a well-drilled Kerikeri team, the BBC team took the first few touches of the ball to settle into the game, but once things started to gather momentum the forwards secured some great lineout and scrum ball and allowed the backs some freedom to move. Leon Cooper showed solid strength off the back of the scrum at Number 8 and after a couple of good strong runs, Leon dashed through the middle of the pack to score a try. Soon afterward Sam Moffat scored an outstanding try on the wing, running around his opposition to score under the posts. Kahi Tipene converted and it was 12 - 0 at half time to BBC. In the second half, Kerikeri came out firing and BBC spent most of the half defending onslaughts of forward drives and back line at-tacking moves. Kerikeri scored a good try in the last spell but Bream Bay managed to hold them out to take their first victory of the Tournament. Final Score BBC 12 - KKHS 5 ( HT BBC12 - KKHS 0) WIN. Tries : Leon Cooper , Sam Moffat Conversion : Kahi Tipene Game Two : BBC vs Bay of Islands College Game two of the Tournament was held in wet conditions. From the start it was evi-dent that the conditions were going to play a huge factor in the game, with handling errors on both sides. Once again, after the first few touches of the ball the BBC team settled in. Seyerus Miller had a strong first half at Half Back making some big tackles and ensuring Dalton Barriball at First Five got plenty of quick ball. Kahi Tipene intercepted a lazy BOI pass to run in and score under the posts, and kicked his own conversion. It was to be the only try for BBC in the game and BOI scored a good try before half time. The second half was a battle and the game was run from one end to other with both teams making some good attacking moves only to have handling errors ruin their chances. An illegal tackle from BOI saw a Yellow Card and the team reduced to 14 players. Dalton Barriball, Ben Lucas and Noah Smith all had strong second halves, showing good defending and making plenty of breaks. A penalty for BBC in the final minutes saw Kahi Tipene score the much needed 3 points and secure the win for the team. Final Score BBC 10 - BOIC 5 (HT BBC 7 - BOIC 5) WIN. Tries : Kahi Tipene Conversion : Kahi Tipene ( 2). Players of the Day : Forwards - Leon Cooper/ Tho-mas Eynon Backs - Kahi Tipene / Dalton Barribal

Ray was born in Invercargill but grew up in Motueka. His father was a First World War veteran and had served in the muddy trenches of the battle of Passchendaele. He came back to work on the family farm in Southland but the great depression (1929 – 1935) forced him to look for work elsewhere. “My father walked away from the farm and went north in search of work. He left us with my maternal grandparents. Six months later he came back and moved the family to Motueka, where he had found work in an orchard.” The family moved into a small bach on the foreshore at Motueka.“It was a wonderful place to grow up. We had the sea in front of us. I used to watch the coastal ships coming in and out of the port and would say that had a big bearing on my going to sea.” Ray remembers the scows, which regularly called at Motueka. “In those days they still used a lot of sail. Sonny Tredigo was the skipper on one. He was a little short man – a bit of an icon in the district. He would sail right up to the bar and then drop the sails and come in on the tide. It was quite a sight to watch.” Ray’s first job was at the age of 15 as a deckboy on the scow Talisman. “There was a very small crew on those scows and we had to work really hard. There was just a captain, a

chief engineer, an assistant engineer, two able seaman and two boys.Us boys had to take turns doing the cooking. We had an old Scotch Engineer and he was very sarcastic. He would say, ‘What is it tonight a burnt offering or a blood offering?” We would leave Nelson on Monday and go up to Motueka where we would dispatch and load cargo. Then up to Waitapu, which was the port for Takaka. We carried general cargo and loaded cases of butter. “Sometimes we would take a load of live pigs for the Huttons’ butchery in Wellington. The pigs were unloaded by crane onto trucks, which would be waiting on the wharf. “They would be lifted three at a time and they would make an awful noise. People used to come down to the wharf to watch. That old Scots engineer would be leaning out of the engine room hatch and would say – ‘Look at them, the rubberneckers.” The onlookers would get splattered in urine and faeces from the airborne pigs. Afterwards it was the job of Ray and the other ship’s boy to scrub down the deck. “There would be an awful stench but the deck would come up white as the driven snow as a result of all that ammonia.” He also recalls several pigs jumping overboard in mid- passage across the Strait, last seen heading for an island. In 1951 Ray found himself without work or pay for five months as a result of the watersiders strike. He found a job in a packing shed in Motueka until a farmer from up country heard there was a striking seaman working in the shed and put pressure on his boss to ask him to leave. Ray said if he had continued to work as a seaman through the strike, he would never have been able to go to sea again. He served his apprenticeship up through the ranks of ordinary seaman and able seaman. By the age of 25 he had his first command as master of a little ship called Paroto with the Collingwood Shipping Company. This company re-opened the port of Kaiapoi, which had been closed for 30 odd

years. “From 1959 to the mid 1960s we built up a really good trade. I can remember the principal owner Colin Ross saying it was good for one small company, if others came along it would ruin it, and this is what happened. It started to peter out around 1966.” In the early 1960s Ray was master of the mail ship, which sailed between Nelson and Wellington across the notorious Cook Strait for the Pearl Jasper and Anchor shipping companies. “I spent many wild nights in the Straits. We sailed in some pretty atrocious weather. Once in a real old man southerly gale, we took shelter in Queen Charlotte Sounds. Back in the straits again, all at once a big wave crashed right through the wheelhouse. It took every window and door in it out. There was a lot of seawater down in the engine room. The man at the wheel was swept all the way out onto the wing of the bridge. “We managed to turn the ship around before the swell and get things under control. We had no radio and no navigational aids. We tacked canvas around the wheelhouse and went back through the north entrance into Queen Charlotte Sounds and down into Picton. From there we notified our agent in Wellington who was wondering where we were and went back down to Nelson to get repairs.” Ray travelled to most ports around New Zealand and had exemptions to enter many of these without a pilot. “We had to sit examinations by filling in a blank chart. You had to fill in the soundings, the beacons and light sectors in the harbour.”Ray held exemptions for the ports of: Bluff, Wellington, Lyttelton, Nelson, Napier, Gisborne, New Plymouth and Westport. In 1967 he got a job with the Wellington Harbour Board as a master on its pilot vessels. “It was pretty hard on my wife with me being away at sea. Sometimes I could be away for two months at a time. Our son was 13 - years - old, so needed his dad to be at home.“It was a big change for me after being master of my own ship to coming to work for a bureaucracy like the Wellington Harbour Board where the chain of command was very entrenched.” He was in Wellington on 10 April 1968 when the inter - island ferry The Wahine foundered on Barretts reef at the entrance to Wellington Harbour with the loss of 53 lives. Ray was off duty when the disaster occurred and had his hands full dealing with his own problems when two thirds of the roof of his house in the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn blew off. “Three great big sections lifted off the rafters. One section landed two properties away and two others ended up on a property below.“Ray got his wife and three children to safety at a neighbour’s home, which was in a less exposed position

further down the hill, and then phoned in to the senior pilot to say he was available to help. He went out later in the day on “a mop up operation”. “We were picking up the life rafts and stuff.”The next day he took divers out to The Wahine. They went down her funnel to close off the fuel valve and stop oil escaping into the sea.In 1970 he was on standby duty in a tug as a pilot ship led the Royal Yacht Britannia and her escort the Naval frigate Waikato out of Wellington Harbour. He remembers, “It was a wretched southerly gale and I was surprised the Royal Yacht was allowed to sail under such conditions.”As he kept watch, he saw a marker buoy left in the harbour by some yachties get caught up in the Britannia’s propeller. He had this information radioed to the Britannia’s captain. On the same occasion, three men were washed overboard from the Waikato. On the way to assist, Ray and his crew noticed a jacket floating in the water. “We thought it was just a jacket but we put a scrabbling hook out just in case.” It turned out to be one of the men. “He was gone.” Ray attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and then got a crewman to take over so he could get back to controlling the vessel. The other two men were in

sight and were picked out of the water by helicopter. The man recovered by the pilot boat was winched up onto the Waikato where paramedics attempted to revive him with oxygen. The ship went back into port and he was delivered to an ambulance and taken to Wellington hospital but he could not be revived. Ray received a letter of thanks from the Captain of the Waikato for his efforts. Finding his job at the Wellington Harbour Board a bit restricting, Ray kept his ear to the ground and, when he heard there was a position open for a tug master in Northland, he applied.Working for the Northland Harbour Board, Ray said, was “like a breath of fresh air.” The NHB had four big tugs: Parahaki, Raumanga, Herekino and Waitangi. Ray remembers, “We used to do a sweep right across to Urquharts Bay up to One Tree Point and back to the berth to check for oil spills first thing every morning and evening.“We looked after all the small ports such as Opua, so I could keep up my seagoing skills.”On 3 September 1975, he was mate on the tug Waitangi as she towed the Captaine Bougainville into Marsden Point where firefighters put out the fire in her engine room. Sixteen lives were lost, including the wife of the captain and her three young children, after the crew abandoned ship and the ships’ boats overturned in heavy seas just off

to Papua New Guinea. I saw a young man led on board by his cousin. They had walked and canoed for three days to get to the ship. When the surgeon took the bandages away from his eyes he could see. “There was a little lady all bent over from leprosy. She had white hair framing a beautiful face. The surgeon gave her sight in one eye. She just beamed. These are memories.” Maisie accompanied Ray on a three month long trip to the Philippines. After meeting a little Filipino boy with a double cleft pallet who had been abandoned by his family, they withdrew some of their invested retirement savings to help fund corrective surgery for the child. With David Cowie, the New Zealand director of the Mercy Ships organisation, they helped found the Ruel Foundation (named for this boy), which has since provided corrective surgery for 100s of children. As recently as last year, Ray flew to Suva to take up the position of First Officer on the current mercy ship for this region – The Pacific Link, taking medical and

Whananaki. Ray remembers coming upon the stricken vessel.“It was a pretty dramatic scene. There was a huge sea running. She was snatching at her anchor and the cable was close to parting. The focsle head would submerge and the propeller would lift right up out of the water. “Initially we doused the fire down with the tug’s fire fighting equipment.” While the ship was undertow the fire flared up again. Captain McKellar Northland’s Harbour Superintendent, who was also on board The Waitangi, called out a second tug, the Raumanga, to spray the flames with water while the tow continued. Ray said, he is grateful to the Northland Harbour Board. “The job was a happy compromise between seafaring and family life.” “I really felt this place had a pulse. Mr. Ralph Trimmer, the Northland Harbour Board’s chairman wanted his marine staff to be the elite in the country. If we got word Mr. Trimmer was bringing VIPs through, we would get to work with the spit and polish. Captain McKellar had high expectations of all his marine staff. We kept those tugs like yachts.” Ray retired from the Northland Port Company in 1991 but that wasn’t the end of his career. Maisie (his late wife) and Ray were both what Ray describes as “practising Christians” and the international Christian Organisation – Mercy Ships, approached the newly retired ships master. Ray agreed to captain the ship The Pacific Ruby, thinking this volunteer position would perhaps take him away from home for a few weeksnow and then. He stayed involved with this organization for the next 12 years, sometimes working up to six months in a year. He took dental and medical teams and medical supplies to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, some of the more remote Fiji islands and the Philippines. He went on public relations fund raising tours around New Zealand and up the Eastern Seaboard of Australia. He took a charter to the sub Antarctic Auckland Islands and delivered a new ship – The Island Mercy from America. “It was life changing stuff. In 1997 we did an outreach

dental teams to two outlying Fiji islands. From the window of the lounge room in his home on the Ruakaka ridge, Ray keeps a knowledgeable eye on the ships coming and going into the port and the Marsden refinery. His son Kenneth has also chosen a career in shipping. He is currently third officer on the Kakariki, an oil tanker which travels around the coast of New Zealand and calls in regularly at Marsden Point Refinery. Ray concludes, “I have had a really good life and an interesting life. There were times when it was pretty hard, particularly when I was a young father and couldn’t get home, but we managed. I am happy with the way my life has evolved.”

A former student if Bream Bay College will be returning to Bream Bay with his new band later this month. Greg Overton plays drums in a band called Scarlet Rage which also includes: singer and guitarist: Scarlet Rose, bass player Roger Clark and guitarist Harry Ashbrook. Greg said he started playing in bands at Bream Bay College “under the watchful eye of Rose Waerea.” While he was a student at the college from 1994 to 2000, “the music culture was huge” and at one point he was in four different bands at once playing various instruments including guitar and drums. He said he is very grateful for the guidance and encouragement Mrs. Waerea gave him. “She taught me to be professional with music.” Scarlet Rage will perform on Friday 24th September from 6pm at the Sharing Shed “We are starting early so the workers can get a taste of what we do with the end of week drinks”- and on Saturday 25th of September at The Waipu Hotel. “I’ve always wanted to play at the Waipu Hotel after seeing many great local acts perform there. That place has a great vibe to it, especially in summer,” said Greg.

Celebrating its 4th anniversary the LJ Hooker Fashion Fiesta at the Ruakaka Races on Saturday September 11 is an opportunity for people to dress up for the races – whether they’re entering into the competition or not. The Fashion Fiesta heats will take place between the 10 horse races, in a large marquee, set-up especially for the fashion catwalk. There are five categories, which include Women 40 & Over, Women Under 40, Men 18 and Over, Young Teens Under 18, and Children aged 5 – 12. A new innovation this year is a local design award, se-lected from those race day outfits entered in the fashion fiesta competition that have been designed by North-landers. The Supreme Award winner (chosen from the winners of the three adult categories) will gain automatic entry into the Prix de Fashion regional finals at the Ellerslie races next March, in addition to a $1500 gift voucher from Steve Haywood Master Jeweller. Entry to the fashion competition is free - you can reg-ister on the day up till 11.30am or contact the Club for an entry form beforehand. There is also a prize for the Best Hat – selected from the public – so you don’t have to enter to be a winner. A $5 gate entry charge applies with the gates opening at 10.30am. The first race is at 11.20am.See www.ruakakaracing.co.nz for more information
