ear Readers,

It’s June, the flowers are in bloom and we are ready to kick summer into gear! You can do yourself a favor and get your own summer party started by taking a dip into this issue of 1966. You’ll find advice about hair care, beauty tips, fitness and more.

Take a trip down memory lane with our salute to music mogul Don Cornelius, founder of the revolutionary dance show, Soul Train. He paved the way for today’s music entrepreneurs like Jay-Z and P Diddy. Speaking of entrepreneurs, we highlight Fashionista Tea, Inc. where an upscale tea collection meets the world of fashion.

If your significant other is really a big kid at heart, then you will want to take a peek at our luxury item of the month. We won’t tell you what it is, but it just might be the perfect thing for his man cave. Also be sure to imbibe our wine of the month, presented by Chrishon Lampley. Enjoying some good spirits can most definitely lift your spirit.

Want to get away? How about a vacation to the Italian island of Capri? It might be small, but it is the playground of the rich and famous. We will show why it is such a hotspot.

If you are looking for a whole new look in your home, some-thing old might be the answer: antiques. Learn everything you need to know on your shopping excursions to get beautiful furniture at bargain prices.

We only get three precious months of summer each year so make those months count by not missing an issue of 1966. Happy reading!

Sincerely,

Alicia and ArianneCo-Editors

DAYNEFACEY

GORGEOUS MALE MODEL DISCOVERED MODELING WHILE ON VACATION

8 – 1966mag.com

Dayne Facey was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica,

one of the most beautiful islands of the Caribbean.

Jamaica has crystalline waters flowing over gardens

of coral, lapping onto soft sandy beaches, and rising

past red soil and lush banana groves into sheer mountains. This is a

beautiful country, captivating to the eyes and soul.

Jamaica cries out to be explored – underwater, on

hikes, river bound with a raft, underground with a lamp

strapped to your head, or on the road by car or bicycle.

However, Dayne had already done it all and was seeking

other adventures.

So, he set off for a journey in Florida and got more than

he dreamed possible. While there, he saw young men

modeling couture clothing in scenes straight from the

pages of GQ.

He had never pursued or thought about modeling until

that day.

When he returned to Jamaica,

as fate would have it, he heard

about a model casting being

held. After attending, he was

asked if he really wanted to model. Facey said, “Sure, what’s the

worst that can happen.”

9 – 1966mag.com

Thus began his life as a male model. Overnight he started

booking major runway shows, television appearances

and music videos. After honing his modeling chops,

Dayne started spending more time in London, Milan,

Paris and New York.

10 – 1966mag.com

11 – 1966mag.com

During his international modeling career, he has been privileged to be signed and working with premier agencies, such as: ICM Models, FM Models, Future Models and L’umo Elite. Facey has walked in European shows for Etro, Adidas, and BBM Magazine just to name a few.

14 – 1966mag.com

What’s happening for Mr. Facey now?

Well, he currently resides in New York

City. He is represented by the cut-

ting-edge E4 Model Management

agency that keeps him busy. Dayne

is solidifying his place in the model-

ing industry as someone with the

distinctive ability to combine good

looks with great skills.

With Bob Marley, Jamaica gifted us

the first global superstar from the

developing world. Now Jamaica

has given the world Dayne Facey, a

gorgeous male model that has just

begun to blossom.

CASTLE STAR LAUNCHES ANEURYSM MODEL SEARCH

In an effort to raise awareness

of a sudden and fatal illness

that claims nearly 500,000 lives

annually, actress Tamala Jones

(“Castle”) is teaming with the Joe

Niekro Foundation and luxury hat

maker Canada Bliss in a model

search for brain aneurysms sur-

vivors.

Running now through June 5 the

Brain Aneurysm Survivor Model

Search is looking for survivors

age 18 and older to appear in

advertising for Tamala By Canada

Bliss, Jones’ signature line of

hand-crocheted hats. To enter

participants must submit a 500

word essay along with two pho-

tos to BASurvivorModelSearch@

gmail.com.

“This is more than a model

search, it is a message to survi-

vors that by sharing our stories

we help save lives,” says Jones

who suffered a ruptured brain

aneurysm at age 23. “For a long

time I did not discuss my brain

aneurysm out of fear, so I under-

stand the silence of survivors but

now we are giving them not only

a voice but faces too.”

The model search is also the

start of Jones’ personal aneu-

rysm early detection campaign

and survivor self-esteem initia-

tive that seeks to educate the

public on the warning signs and

symptoms of brain aneurysms by

encouraging survivors to share

their stories and show post aneu-

rysm successes.

33 – 1966mag.com

Luxury hat maker Canada Bliss

worked with Jones to create the

signature line Tamala By Canada

Bliss to help raise awareness

of brain aneurysms. The com-

pany is now taking its altruism a

step further by placing survivors

chosen via the model search in

advertising for the brand. Pro-

ceeds from the sales of Tamala

By Canada Bliss benefit brain an-

eurysm awareness and research.

“One of the central values of

Canada Bliss is celebrating the

simple joys and diversities of life.

Being part of the Brain Aneurysm

Survivor Model Search embod-

ies all of these values,” said

Karen Viloria-Miguel the CEO of

Canada Bliss. “It is a privilege to

be involved in supporting brain

aneurysm survivors; honoring

their struggles and celebrating

their lives.”

In a twist of fate, Natalie Niekro

founder of the Joe Niekro Foun-

dation contacted Viloria-Miguel

about Tamala By Canada Bliss

via social media to applaud her

and the company for their ef-

forts to promote brain aneurysm

awareness and ended up joining

the campaign.

“We are thrilled to be collaborat-

ing with Tamala, Canada Bliss

and survivors across America.

This is a wonderful testament to

survivors everywhere that aware-

ness is beautiful and chic,” said

Niekro who lost her father major

league baseball legend Joe Niek-

ro to a brain aneurysm in 2006.

“What an incredible day it will be

when we get to witness these

courageous survivors represent-

ing a platform that is so vitally

important to our mission.”

With women being 50% more

likely to suffer an aneurysm than

men Jones, Viloria-Miguel and

Niekro are the ideal advocates for

this cause that currently claims

nearly 500,000 lives annually;

approximately 30,000 Americans

suffer a rupture each year, that

is roughly one rupture every 18

minutes. Those numbers out-

pace more well know illnesses

like breast cancer and ALS.

Links to enter the model search

may also be found canada-bliss.

com, joeniekrofoundation.com

and at tamala-jones.com/model-

search. Participants must submit

a 500 word essay along with two

photos to be eligible for consid-

eration. Submissions close at

midnight June 5th.

BEAUTYMUST-HAVES

EDITOR’S CHOICE:

Product: Ruby Kisses Lip Lacquer in Midnight Plum Black

Why: This lip gloss is super pigmented and has serious staying power! Between my meals and Starbucks cof-fee runs my lip color lasted all day. I love the incred-ible shine and beautiful deep plum shade too; it is so strong I feel as though the rest of my makeup can remain quite simple.

-Arianne Suggs

Product: Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer SX12

Why: I literally will continue to buy this product until the end of time. The good thing is all you need is a little bit of product and it takes care of all your needs whether you wear it as a concealer or foundation. It’s perfect. It has cut down my makeup routine for sure

-Alicia Suggs

Product: Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer in Chain Reaction

Why: I have been on the hunt for a strong metallic nail tint to give my nails a real indus-trial feel. This color is strong, yet surprisingly blends easily into any ensemble. The pol-ish, in time, seems to fade rather than chip making it easy to remove or simply add a quick coat in order to refresh the nail look.

-Arianne Suggs

1. Purple Eyes: During fashion

weeks held all over the globe,

purple proved to be the color

of choice of makeup artists in

order to enhance the window to

the soul aka the eyes. In order to

make this look your very own be

sure to cover or lessen the ap-

pearance of any dark circles first.

Purple eye shadow coupled with

dark circles can give you a tired

look instead of a glam one.

Not a fan of purple? Blue is still

going strong this season and

can be used heavily all over

the lid or in a more subtle

way through the applica-

tion of blue eyeliner to just

the waterline or even blue

mascara to help make the

eyes pop.

2. Red lips: This classic lip

color is back in all of its glorious

tint power! Red lips are for the

woman who is confident, bold,

sophisticated and wants to ooze

sex appeal. This beauty trend

can be worn to enhance sum-

mer hair such as beachy waves,

curls, buns or a chic retro updo.

2 SUMMER BEAUTY TRENDS TO TRY RIGHT NOW!

COURTESY OF:NIXX PHOTOGRAPHYHORST PETZOLDLUBA V NEL

It is very important to invest in a

good moisturizer that is suitable

for your skin type.

As you age, you start losing the

collagen in your skin and this can

lead to fine lines and wrinkles. In

order to prevent this from hap-

pening you have to get to the root

of the cause of collagen loss.

By using a skin care moisturizer

cream with ingredients like func-

tional keratin and active manuka

honey, you can prevent collagen

loss and even help it re-grow.

Don’t make the mistake of using

a cream that contains collagen.

To maintain your skin’s smooth-

ness, elasticity, and tone as you

grow older use a skin care mois-

turizer cream that contains phy-

tessence wakame. Phytessence

wakame inhibits the activity of

hyaluronidase in the skin. Hyal-

uronidase is a harmful enzyme

that breaks down hyaluronic acid,

which is essential to maintain

your skin’s smoothness, elastic-

ity, and tone.

MOISTURIZER WHY IS IT GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN

If you don’t use a cream that

contains phytessence wakame,

your skin will lose its youthful

appearance and you will be more

likely to develop dark under eye

circles. Phytessence wakame

is rich in vitamins and minerals

and it is also beneficial because

it protects your skin from the

damage caused by UV rays and

pollution.

We all know the importance

of drinking water, it flushes

out all the toxins and waste

from the skin, leaving it soft,

radiant and youthful. Howev-

er, we must not neglect our

skin on the outside, it needs

a certain amount of moisture

to maintain its elasticity and

flexibility, which is why the

use of a cleanser and mois-

turizer are so important.

Skin toner works well to

remove impurities and

tighten pores. However,

some of them can be very

abrasive on your skin.

So, toner should be used

sparingly and never used

around your eye area.

So I kept hearing

about eyelash exten-

sions and wanted to

give it a try. I had

already tried applying eyelashes

myself but felt like it was such a

pain and I just don’t have the time

to figure it out in the morning be-

fore starting my day.

EYELASH EXTENSIONSBEAUTY TREND

BY: ALICIA SUGGS

With these eyelash extensions it

took about an hour to apply them

and voila you have a set of beauti-

ful lashes with little to no up keep.

I have had no allergic reaction to

them at all which is great. I also

usually forget they are even there.

It’s really a great investment

SPOTLIGHT

FASHIONISTA

TEA

By Serena Harris

47 – 1966mag.com

Americans generally love their coffee and can’t

imagine starting their day without a strong,

steaming cup of Joe. However, we also love the

occasional cup of tea, perhaps a nod to our na-

tion’s early British heritage. There is just some-

thing both sophisticated and civilized about a

proper cup of tea and Brenda Dillon Cavette has

managed to add fashion to the mix. She is the

founder of Fashionista Tea Inc.

Cavette studied fashion design and merchan-

dising in college which eventually led her down

the career path of a television producer. She

produced a number of fashion and design seg-

ments and earned an Emmy Award nomination

along the way. However, she never forgot how

much she loved tea and her fond memories of

sharing it with her mother in their kitchen.

Leaving television behind, Cavette returned to

her love of tea and created Fashionista Tea Inc,

which combines fashion with a unique organic

tea collection. The unique feature of the collec-

tion is the custom crafted biodegradable silk

pyramid sachets with a tea tag of a leopard

print stiletto heel. One can’t help but to think of

fashion with a tea tag like that.

The tea collection is obtained from small tea

growers from all over the world. The company

tries to buy Fair Trade Tea as often as possible

because this promotes fair wages for workers,

helps to protect against land loss and promotes

environmentally friendly processes for produc-

ers and their families. So not only is Fashionista

Tea sophisticated but also socially conscious.

It is always refreshing to learn about entrepre-

neurs who are setting new trends and protect-

ing the environment at the same time. To learn

more about Brenda and her tea collection you

can listen to her interview on blogtalk radio:

DON CORNELIUS DON CORNELIUS THE ORIGINAL MUSIC MOGUL

These days we are all familiar with Jay-Z, P

Diddy and Kanye West. They all are considered

music moguls, particularly of the hip-hop/rap

genre. However, when they were still in dia-

pers, Don Cornelius was in Chicago blazing a

trail for them to follow. The originator of the

popular hit TV dance show, Soul Train, brought

great soul music into the homes of millions of

American, no matter their ethnicity.

Born and raised in Chicago, Cornelius joined

the United States Marine Corps upon gradu-

ating from high school in 1954 and served in

Korea for 18 months. Afterwards, he held vari-

ous jobs including selling tires and insurance;

he even served for a stint as a Chicago police

officer. However, he was not satisfied with the

work he was doing and quit his job, despite the

fact that he only had $400 in the bank and a

family to support.

49 – 1966mag.com

After taking a three month

broadcasting course he was

able to land a job with Chi-

cago radio station WVON,

working as a news reporter,

announcer and disc jockey.

In 1967, he hosted the pro-

gram A Black’s View of the

News for Chicago television

station WCIU. The same

television station allowed

him to launch the ground-

breaking show Soul Train.

In 1971 the show went into

syndication and was moved

to Los Angeles.

Cornelius, who had also

been a journalist inspired

by the civil rights move-

ment, recognized that there

was no outlet on television

to promote soul music.

By means of Soul Train he

was able to introduce many

African-American singers

and musicians to a very

large audience; some of the

entertainers included Glad-

ys Knight & the Pips, James

Brown, Aretha Franklin and

Michael Jackson.

50 – 1966mag.com

Thanks to Soul Train,

Cornelius was able to

keep the civil rights

movement alive and

well long after the death

of Dr. Martin Luther

King Jr. The show cast

African-Americans in a

more positive light and

shared their culture with

the rest of the nation. It

even helped to promote

the “Black Is Beautiful”

campaign and give a

platform to both tal-

ented musicians and

dancers.

51 – 1966mag.com

Sadly, Cornelius died in February

2012; apparently his death was

was due to a self-inflicted gunshot

wound to the head. He had under-

gone a brain operation in 1982 and

according to Cornelius he was nev-

er quite the same again and was in

a great deal of pain. Eventually he

couldn’t take the pain anymore and

took his life. We could use more

groundbreaking musical business

people like Cornelius, but we were

so happy to have him while he was

with us. It only seems appropriate

to close this article with his famous

catchphrase “... and you can bet

your last money, it’s all gonna be a

stone gas, honey! I’m Don Corne-

lius, and as always in parting, we

wish you love, peace and soul!”

a splendid vacation, is a gem of an island located

off the Italian coast of Naples.

Capri is just four miles long and two miles wide.

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, its glorious

mountains look like magical creatures rising out

of the sea. You will not need a car while visiting

Capri because the island has a network of buses,

taxis and funiculars.

Capri may be small, but it is definitely the play-

ground of the rich - movie stars, businessmen,

luxury travelers and jetsetters. Capri is southern

Italy’s “it town”, defeating Sardinia’s Costa Smer-

alda.

While visiting Capri,

you will see charming

outdoor cafe’s, shops,

white-washed build-

ings, narrow thorough-

fares, wrought-iron

gates and an array of

flowers. The best time

to take your Capri vaca-

tion is in the spring

when fragrant orange

blossoms, jasmine

and roses overtake the

island. The gentle wind

blowing in from the sea

carries a crisp fra-

grance over the island.

Reaching Capri

All tourists visiting

Capri usually arrive

at the Marina Grande,

Capri’s bustling port. A

sand and pebble beach

sits right next to the

port where you may

see people playing ball

when you arrive. The

scene may look tempt-

ing, but it is perhaps the

least attractive thing that the capricious Capri

has to offer.

From the port, a funicular will take you to your

hotels. Most hotels are located in the Alberghi

region of Capri and it is recommended that you

choose a hotel close to the port, to avoid the long

transit.

Grotta Azzura or the Blue Grotto

Capri’s most authentic offer-

ing is the Grotta Azzura or

the Blue Grotto. It is a sea

cave, distinctively lighted due

to the natural architecture

of the cave. Visiting Azzura

makes you wonder at the

amazing things that Mother

Nature can do. There are

a few similar caves in the

world, but the one at Capri is

the most beautiful.

Swimming While Visiting the Island of

Capri

Capri is located on a rocky coast. The jagged

coastline makes Capri unfit for swimming. There

are only a few sandy beaches, like the one next

to the port. Tourists often opt to swim in their

hotel pools. Bagni Neuttno, located near the

Blue Grotto is suitable for swimming. You have

to pay to use the towels, deck chairs, cabanas

and other beachside amenities. Bagni di Tiberio

is another place to go swimming. It’s a short

walk from the Italian villa.

Capri Vacation Accommodation

Tourism is a leg on which Capri’s economy

stands, making tourist trapping an almost com-

pulsive behavior of the vendors here. Especially

thronged in the summers, Capri will leave you

without a hotel room if you arrive without a prior

reservation.

When visiting Italy, do not forget to

set aside a few days for a memo-

rable Capri vacation. A remarkable

island, with nature’s wonders galore,

Capri is not a place worth missing.

1. Keep things cool – Keeping your home on the cool side will increase your body’s brown fat. The brown fat, in turn, burns calories to help your body stay warm.

2. Drop to the ground – This may sound crazy, but it is better to sit on the floor when watch-ing TV rather than sitting on the couch. The rea-son is that your muscles have to support you more when seated on the floor and you will have to exert yourself more to stand up again.

3. Do the tedious tasks – Most jobs require little physical effort so we don’t burn as many calories as workers back in the day used to burn. Try copying some documents (burns 12 calories), standing while filing (burns 18 calo-ries) or watering plants and cleaning up your cubicle (burns 15 calories).

4. Do not be a Hercules – After you have done your grocery shopping and are ready to unload your bags from the car, don’t try to carry as many bags as you can into the house. Take one bag at a time so that you make several trips from the car to the house. You could potentially burn 89 calories by taking all those extra steps.Getting up early and going to the

gym can be real tough to do; it’s much easier to keep hitting the snooze button instead. So what do you do when you fail to go to the gym but don’t want to feel guilty all day about it? Try getting up just 15 minutes earlier than usual and do some activity to get your metabo-lism going. Jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches and squats are all excellent ways to get the calorie-burning pro-cess started and continuing through-out the day.

HERE ARE SEVEN WAYS YOU CAN BURN MORE CALORIES AND FAT

THROUGHOUT THE DAY:HOW TO BURN MORE

CALORIES ALL DAY

LONG

5. Make use of a smaller water bottle – Gener-ally we try to get the biggest water bottle we can find to make sure we are getting plenty of water during the day. However, using a small water bottle will mean having to make more trips to the water cooler to refill it. More trips, means more steps, more steps means more calories burned.

6 .Take five – Whether you are walking on the treadmill or working out on the elliptical make yourself go on for another five minutes, 10 minutes would be even better, and you could burn up to an extra 100 calories.

7. Let the music move you – Rap music has anywhere from 120 to 140 beats per minute, so every time your foot hits the ground there is a beat. Without even knowing it, you will automatically pick up your pace to try to equal the beat. You will end up working harder and therefore, burning more calories.

Getting fit or staying fit takes work, but hope-fully, these tips will help you to get the job done!

WAIST TRAINING

59 – 1966mag.com

They call it a six pack, washboard or

plainly just abs. Many women are vying

for not only a flattened tummy but a

smaller numerical measurement of their

waistline. This phenomenon is noth-

ing new, during the glory days of old

Hollywood actresses and entertainers

were touted for their diminutive waists

and hourglass figures. However, even

further back within the annals of history

women have long sought after a smaller

diameter.

In times past, ladies achieved tinier di-

mensions with the use of a corset. The

contraptions created during those time

periods were less forgiving than the

ones commonly used today. In modern

times women can now comfortably use

corsets in order to pull or train their

waist to reshape itself. However, just

like with any new fitness program it is

very wise to investigate the risks, if any,

to ensure that the end result will be a

beneficial one.

Some of the health risks associated

with waist training include: difficult

breathing, movement of internal organs

and breaking ribs if the belt is used too

tightly. In addition, women who use their

corsets incorrectly risk developing bad

posture, especially when the corset is

removed. If you think that this process

will be simple or a quick fix think again.

Waist training is not like a crash diet,

patience is very important in the forma-

tion of the waist, as it can take weeks

or months to get the desired shape. The

body shaping process takes time and

cannot be rushed, especially if you do

not want to experience harsh repercus-

sions.

Tips For Safe Waist Training• Use a cotton shirt under the corset to

avoid rubbing of the skin.

• Skin can become rough due to training so

after removing the corset make sure skin

is clean and dry then immediately apply a

moisturizer.

• Don’t just rely on the corset to give you

results, start a workout program and eat

sensibly in order to lose excess weight and

give more tone to the body.

• Remember that if the waist measures

more than 36 inches the corset needs to

be 5 or 6 inches smaller than your waist;

otherwise, if your waist is smaller than 36

inches the corset has to be 3 or 4 inches

smaller.

• Do not train your waist while eating,

sleeping or working out.

• To achieve drastic results you must work

up to waist training for at least 12 hours

a day. When beginning your waist training

program start by wearing the corset for 4-5

hours.

Alternative

Not quite sure if waist training is for you? You are not alone, but rest assured that you can achieve a

smaller waist through good old fashion exercise. A great move to help whittle your waist is the plank.

Hold this position for 30-60 seconds if you are a beginner or up to to 2 minutes if advanced. Repeat 3

times and you are on your way to a rocking body!

HEAD OVER HEELSSweet Riesling is fragrant nosed with a distinct lemon grapefruit character. It’s a supple body

wine with a cleansing crispness. Enjoy Head Over Heels whenever you want to indulge in pun-gent cheeses and dried fruit desserts.

THE SECRET TO WORK-AT-HOME SUCCESS

Would you like to start a busi-

ness from home? If so, you

have lots of options. Many

people earn a nice side income,

and some, a handsome full-

time income, by putting their

interests and talents to work.

But those who make a nice

profit with their businesses

have not jumped into some-

thing that looked promising and

hoped for the best. To establish

a successful work-at-home

business, you need to learn

certain secrets. And the most

successful micro-business

owners learn this one well:

You need to research the mar-

ket.

How do you do that? After

thinking about what your busi-

ness might consist of, based

on your interests and expertise,

you need to first take a look

at what your target market is

already buying. Go to major

online stores, for instance Ama-

zon.com, and take a look at the

bestseller lists of the catego-

ries that fit with your business.

Check out non-fiction books

related to your business idea.

What people are already buying is

what you need to be selling.

This sounds counterintuitive.

After all, won’t you be in compe-

tition with businesses that are

already established? Yes, but

when there is a large demand

for something, there needs

to be more suppliers. There

is room for everyone to make

money.

63 – 1966mag.com

As an example, lets discuss

shampoo. A lot of companies

make shampoo because it’s

something people use a lot. But

that doesn’t mean you couldn’t

earn a good living selling sham-

poo. On the contrary, since the

product is in such high demand

you would find customers a lot

more easily than if you were sell-

ing wedding garters.

You can also figure out what kind

of business might work by going

to a bookstore and examining the

magazine titles. First, whatever

topic has a magazine is bound to

have some good business ideas

hidden therein. Second, glancing

at the article teasers on the front

cover can give you some ideas

about what the target market is

interested in.

Want to go into digital self-pub-

lishing? You’ll make a lot more

money selling romance than

junior science books.

Another way to research your

market is to find out what prob-

lems people are struggling with.

• Overweight people who want to

lose weight struggle with finding

a diet that works.

• Dog lovers may want to know

what the healthiest food for their

pets is.

• Mothers of young children are

desperate to know how to find

peace and relaxation when they

feel like they’re being torn in sev-

eral directions every moment of

every day.

To succeed with a work-at-home

business, you have to do your

research. You need to know what

people want and then figure out

how to meet their needs within

the context of your business

model and unique skill set and

talents. Once you figure that out,

the sky is the limit for you!

DÉCORHOMEBUYING AFFORDABLE, AUTHENTIC ANTIQUES

66 – 1966mag.com

Antique shops are fun, interesting alterna-

tives to run-of-the-mill retailers. Even if

you’re just browsing, you’ll find dealers who

will be more than happy to ask questions

and describe the history of the items they’re

displaying. If you don’t have a lot of experi-

ence doing this type of shopping, here’s

some information that will help make your

first antiquing excursion successful and

fun.

Developing Relationships

Smaller antique shops are great because

they provide an opportunity to develop rela-

tionships with dealers and their employees. The owners will probably always be there, and often share some

of the same interests as you. Instead of just going in and out like a regular store, you’ll have such a good time

chatting up the employees you’ll want to stay for hours.

Safety

Once you go to a place you trust, you’ll feel secure knowing your purchase is of high quality. For instance, if

your dealer says that sofa you’re interested in is a true Victorian-era model, you will know he or she is tell-

ing you the truth. Unlike auctions, where what you’re buying is “as is,” reputable antique shops will have fair

return policies.

In many instances, they’ll even let you try out an item to make sure it is exactly what you want. This can be a

big help if you’re interested in an old oak chest or an Oriental rug, but it doesn’t quite fit with the decor when

you bring it home.

67 – 1966mag.com

Specialty Stores

There are probably a lot of antique shops in your city that have their own unique personalities and specialize

in certain items. One store may feature French furniture while others may carry vintage books, jewelry and

collectibles. Look at each store’s website and make sure they sell something that piques your interest before

paying a visit.

Negotiating

Most of the time, the prices you see in these types of stores aren’t set in stone; there’s a little “wiggle room”

where you can negotiate. But you shouldn’t take this as an opportunity to nitpick an item and point out ev-

erything that’s wrong. That may result in a polite invitation to take your business elsewhere. Simply ask the

dealer if he or she can do better on the price and you may receive a discount of about 10 percent.

Sales

Most of the stores in your area will typically hold big sales events once or twice a year, so if you’re not in a

rush to get a particular item you’ll probably be better served waiting for a while. The results could be well

worth it.

Don’t be afraid to go into various antique shops in your area and just browse. You’ll very likely not have to

deal with any sort of “hard sell” approach and you may even wind up making a new friend or two.
