According to the chairman Mr. Asvin Kaka, Harley’s as a company can be associated with efficiency, first class service and integrity. It is his goal to see Harley’s become the number one supplier of medical products, pharmaceuticals and FMCG products.

He believes that it is only when the employees have job satisfaction and a happy working environment that the company will be able to achieve this goal. He hopes that the employees will show dedication to work and bring innovative ideas that will ensure that the company achieves its aims.

Mr. Nishil believes that Harley’s should use technology better in order to drive future growth while at the same time allocating resources prudently.

He believes that in order for employees to grow within the company and as a whole, they should embrace the core behaviours of Harley’s. Continuous innovation, efficiency of operation, market position, market share and revenue growth are key indicators of success at Harley’s as well as the ability to solve the problems that customers experience. Harley’s is a solution provider that meets the needs of its customers and engages in the right ethical practices.

As the directors we should epitomize the qualities as outlined in the core behaviours of Harley’s so that the same can be replicated by our employees. In 2016, we have had several milestones such as the opening of the Eldoret Branch, establishment of an ecommerce platform, social media marketing and tying up deals with new agencies such as Astra Zeneca and Merck Serono.

Director of operations MR. NISHIL HARIA

With over 60 years since its humble inception as a retail pharmacy in Kisumu in 1953, Harley’s has become synonymous with the best employer company as well as a loyal tax payer to the Kenyan government. Our journey has not been easy since the current management took over in 1975, but has been characterised by hard work and clear prioritisation of the core business of the company which has been focused on importation and distribution of healthcare products. Huge growth within the medical sphere has prompted government to push for the upgrading of all facilities operating in the healthcare industry.

We have seen tremendous growth over the years and in 1983 our headquarters moved from Kisumu to Nairobi in order to maximise output and streamline our operations. We now have branches in Mombasa, Tanzania, Uganda and recently Eldoret. This remarkable growth can only be attributed to the company culture we have cultivated as well as our brilliant employees, efficient suppliers as well as our dependable customers. I wish to thank them all. In order to achieve our target for the next three years of a 25 percent annual growth, we would like to focus our efforts on strengthening our key areas of distribution.

In spite of the sense of foreboding brought about by the financial crises and property glut that has engulfed the East African economy, we see a bright future ahead and while others are slowing down and going into cost cutting, we are planning to move forward swiftly and decisively. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our employees, suppliers and customers and to wish them all the best for 2017.

HIV/ Aids continues to be the number one killer accounting for 80,000 deaths every year. However, Cancer has emerged as one of the leading causes of deaths in the country. Cancer is the third leading cause of death in Kenya accounting for 7% of deaths per year. Even though the data on the disease is scanty and mostly from urban centres especially Nairobi, it is estimated that there are 39,000 new cases of cancer each year with 27,000 deaths reported every year.Cancer is a complex disease which manifests when cells of an organ or

tissue in the body become abnormal, growing and multiplying out of control. These cells can invade other tissue and spreads to other parts of the body through blood and lymph systems.

The disease manifests itself as either benign or malignant. Benign tumours do not spread to other parts of the body while malignant tumours invade other tissue and cells and continue to spread if they are not treated leading to secondary cancers. Other forms of cancers such as leukaemia do not form tumours.

Majority of Kenyans affected by cancer, 60%, are younger than 70 years old.

Breast cancer accounts for the highest cases of cancer among women, 34 in every 100,000 while cervical cancer affects 25 in every 100,000 women. Amongst the men prostate cancer affects 17 in every 100,000 and oesophageal cancer affects 9 in every 100,000 men. Due to several factors, majority of cancer cases are diagnosed in late stages. Lack of diagnosis and treatment centres has been one of

Most Prevalent Illness 2016Dr. Qasim Shabbir Pirbhai

Kenya like most African countries continues to grapple with tropical diseases such as Malaria which kills 8 million people in Africa every

year and other water-borne and communicable diseases.

the biggest challenges. The number of radiation centres stands at four, all of which are based in Nairobi. There are two main treatment facilities and two more facilities with limited capabilities. The number of personnel to treat the disease stands at six medical oncologists, four radiation oncologists, three oncology nurses amongst other personnel. The disease has not spared children either, with children accounting for 15% of cancer admission between 1998 and 2008. Due to poor access to medical care for patients in rural areas, limited specialist treatment centres, high cost of cancer drugs and lack of awareness amongst medical staff and the general public the survival rate amongst children in Kenya is very low compared to developed countries.

Causes:Cancer is known to appear later in life. This can be attributed to the alterations that occur to our genes over time due to cell division. Diet, lifestyle, viral infections, exposure to radiation or harmful chemicals, and inherited genes are suspected to increase one’s risk of cancer. Substances such as tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, radiation can cause cancer.

Infections such as HIV/Aids damage the body’s immune system therefore increasing the risk of developing cancer. Age is also a factor because due to the accumulation of damaged cells and the weakening of the immune system as we grow old. Some viral infections are responsible for certain types of cancer, for example Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are responsible for liver cancer while the human papillomavirus virus (HPV)

is believed to increase the risk of cervical cancer. Genetic composition is also responsible for certain cancer which are inherited from family members.

TreatmentsEarly detection, better screening and improved treatment have helped increase people’s chances of surviving after being diagnosed with the disease. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the treatment options available for patients.Chemotherapy involves treatment with drugs that are known to kill cancer. Surgery or surgical oncology involves the surgical management of tumours. Radiotherapy involves blasting tumours with high-energy x-rays to shrink them and destroy cancerous cells. It works killing the cancerous cells. Some of the advanced treatments that are not yet available in Kenya include, bone marrow transplant, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, gene and gene therapy.

PreventionOne of the best ways to prevent and reduce cases of cancer is early

diagnosis. According to research, screening for various forms of cancer helps to prevent them by finding precancerous tumours which can be treated before they become cancerous. Treatment for the disease also works well when the disease is at an early stage, therefore screening is advised as it helps detect the disease at early stages.

Women can be vaccinated for the human papillomavirus(HPV) which helps lower the risk of developing cervical cancer while the hepatitis B vaccine helps lower the risk of developing liver cancer.

Keeping a healthy lifestyle can also help reduce the chances of developing cancer. It is advisable to avoid tobacco, reducing alcohol use, using sunscreen to protect ourselves from UV light, avoiding indoor tanning, partaking vegetables, exercising and checking our weight.

In the year 2013 Harley’s joined left foot sports league and started in division 5 and finished seventh in the first year. The next year after some excellent performance the team was promoted to division four. As of 2016 the team

is playing on the left foot league in division four and also participates in cups and tournaments. One of the most recent tournaments

Harley’s Football Team

to participate in was the Floodlight tournament at Hockey Park where Harley’s qualified for the finals out of 60 teams. Harley’s lost the final 3-1 to Ping Limited. This was one of the greatest achievement that the team has ever accomplished.

On the 8th of October Harley’s Limited also participated in the Reckitt Tournament at Milimani Primary where they have previously reached the semi-final.

The team is composed of Harley’s staff and they practice on Saturdays at Hospital Hill primary school in parklands. The left foot league games usually take place at Kilimani Primary School on Sundays.

Mr. Farouk Parpia is the team manager while Mr. Kimani is the assistant team manager.

Deep Freeze sponsors the team and provides kits. Wellman from Vitabiotics has also offered their support for the team. Rohto has also been in touch with the team management for an opportunity to sponsor the team.

The team manager is also hopeful that other brands within Harley’s can support the team and also appear for matches when they have an opportunity to advertise their merchandize. Harley’s management provides the allowances for the players as well as the participation fee in the left foot league and tournaments. The team manager was also hopeful that Harley’s employees would attend their matches in order to offer them support during matches

Aquagenic UrticariaAllergic reactions usually occur when our body’s immune system reacts aggressively to harmless substances which it mistakes for pathogens. Allergic reactions range from mild ones to very acute. anaphylactic shock inducing.

The most common causes of allergies are pollen, dust, food, insect strings, animal dander, mold, medication and latex among others. It is however unthinkable that someone would have an allergic reaction to water. Aquagenic Urticaria is one of the strangest allergies where the patient develops painful and itchy abrasions when they come into contact with water. These abrasions and itchiness occur despite the temperature of the water the sufferer of the condition comes into contact with. The condition is more prevalent in women and has been known to affect children. The condition manifests itself prevalently during adolescence.

There is no known cure for the disease, however there are several numbers of treatment that can help mitigate the effects of the rashes. The condition may manifest itself as cold urticarial which is a reaction to cold

this condition. The condition is particularly prevalent in women who have siblings who suffer from Bernanrd Souliers Syndrome.

Treatment for Aquagenic UricariaThe condition has no known treatment and the treatments offered are only used to mitigate the effects of the disease and to ease the pain when the patients have to come into contact with water.

Oral antihistamines are usually used to mitigate the effects and therapeutic responses to them vary amongst patients.Ultra violet radiation has been used to thicken the epidermis and therefore prevent water from penetrating it and interacting with the cells underneath. It is also used with antihistamines to rid patients of the lacerations and eruptions caused by the condition.

Barrier methodsAn oil in water solution or emulsion cream have been applied to the skin to protect it from water exposure while washing or performing aquatic activities. Use of protective clothing to avoid contact with water.

water or cholinergic uticaria which is a reaction to warm or hot water.Diagnosis of Aquagenic UrticariaWater treatment test are used to diagnose the condition. Water is placed directly on the skin or a wet cloth is put on the skin. Distilled water, tap water and saline water are used to check the difference in reaction. Every 10-15 minutes the skin is examined for a reaction.

SymptomsThe symptoms for this condition manifest themselves on the skin. Hives, eruptions and skin reddening occurs within a few minutes after contact with water. Very painful lacerations develop after10-120 minutes. Difficulty in swallowing, gasping or subjective respiratory distress can occur after drinking water.

Causes of Aquagenic UrticariaThe condition usually occurs after bathing, swimming or exposure to rain and in extreme cases skin eruptions occur due to sweat and tears emission.

Lactose intolerance seems to intensify the risk of developing

Henry Wanyoike’s Story and Inspiration.

His motto, “I have lost my sight but I haven’t lost my vision” epitomises his desire to reach great heights of achievement despite his challenges. His walls are bedecked by medals and accolades in both international and local events in recognition of his athletic prowess as well as his inspiration to achieve more despite our challenges.

Henry Wanyoike woke up in complete darkness on May 1st 1995. He had suffered a mild stroke during the night which left him completely blind. This was cataclysmic and left him wallowing in suicidal depression. He undertook counselling and therapy sessions at a local Mission Hospital and later joined Machakos Technical Institute for the blind, for a rehabilitation program. While at the institute he developed an interest in athletics which saw him compete in an Olympic Day run. This enabled him

to participate in the national trials for the Sydney 2000 Paralympics in Australia. He garnered gold in the 5000 metres.

This was the beginning of his journey in both national and international athletics in both disabled and able bodied categories which has seen him garner numerous medals and accolades.

President Daniel T. Moi as well as President Mwai Kibaki have awarded him the grand warrior medals. In 2005 he was the UN personality of the year runners up, he has also received various UN international

awards as well as ambassadorial posts. He is amongst the one hundred most influential people and sportsmen in Kenya

In his quest to give back to the community, Henry Wanyoike has participated in many charitable activities in Kenya to assist the poor, persons with disabilities, orphans and other less privileged people. He donates, participates in events, initiates community service projects, partners with other organisations/ corporates among others. You can visit Henry Wanyoike’s website www.henry4gold.com for more information

Harley’s at Henry Wanyoike’sHope for the future run

In Henry Wanyoike we have found a person who epitomises our vision of giving back to the community. Our partnership began in 2012 when we participated in the Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon. We wanted to challenge everyone to achieve more than they thought they could as individuals, as well as the entire company.

We invited Wanyoike to share his story with us and be part of our start up for the marathon. His story inspired hope to our marathon team

and continues to inspire everyone and give them a better perspective on life and how to handle challenges.

From 2012, we continue to participate every year in the annual Henry Wanyoike Foundation Hope for the Future RUN Marathon. In 2016 we participated in the 10th edition which was held on the 4th of June 2016. The theme for the Marathon was peace and inclusion for persons with disabilities. The marathon began at Wangige and concluded at Kikuyu Township Primary. Henry Wanyoike continues to be an inspiration to many people, one of the reasons Harley’s as partnered

with him to be the Deep Heat Brand Ambassador. With every sale of Deep Heat, a certain amount goes to the Foundation. Harley’s also regularly contributes towards the Foundation. We are proud to be associated with the Henry Wanyoike Foundation and support his vision.

“Oops, oh my God!”....these are the usual cries of women in the households because of the behaviour of men and their socks. It’s not that I hate you men but it’s a reality that almost 70% of men do not keep their socks in the right place - laundry basket, after removing them from their feet.

After following up this issue, I decided to do a survey on women both married and single and amazingly I was shocked by what they say, plus their body language and I did conclude that this should be declared a household disaster.Men, this is a small thing that we need to change but only if you will read and understand the message our women are sending to us. It’s

actually embarrassing when you find that the worst happens even with the most celebrated individuals in our society. An example is the USA first lady one day in a T.V interview complained that sometimes she used to get the socks on top of the fridge in the kitchen and better one is of our former transport minister was spotted wearing a torn sock. A spot check revealed that when men arrive at home the first place in the house is usually the living room for the lazy guys and the kitchen for the good eaters/mummy’s boys.

For those who do end up in the kitchen they will mostly roll their socks into a ball and then throw them along the corridors to the kitchen, on top of the sink or kitchen table, in

their pockets or next to the dustbin while the lazy men will throw the socks under the table, the seats, the sides of the sofa set or inside the shoes. Those who tend to behave nicely must have suffered from the ailments attached to the feet disease where they must attain cleanliness to avoid the foul smell. But they still will mess up the toilets by leaving them on top of the cistern tank.

An interview with most men seems to prove the claim by giving a weaker version of argument that they are so busy to notice what happens with the socks. I think it’s a habit that can only be tamed by women by providing a clear guideline on cleanliness of the house and with extensive follow up by commenting about it every time it happens. Because they usually know where to find the washed socks so they should be trained to use the laundry basket. Most single men have the tendency of wearing the same pair of socks for two or three days while others will buy so many pairs and instead of washing them they do what is called “Aeration” that is putting them on the line for re-use in two weeks time.

In conclusion, there is a saying stating that for every successful man there is a woman behind him so it is now a duty for the women to make sure that these men are smart with these footwear. They should look into it that there is enough pair of socks in the wardrobe, discard any torn socks and replace the old socks reason being that these is the weakest point in most men. The writers advisory

“please match your socks”.

Te l e p h o n e E t i q u et teWhen communicating we should do so in a manner that is appropriate to the audience, situation and nature of the message to be communicated. A phone call is one of the best way to communicate. When communicating through the

phone it is important to follow these rules.

You should pick the phone by the second or third ring Keep the phone at least two fingers from your mouth for clarity. Your tone should neither be too loud nor too low, make sure you pronounce words clearly and slowly enough for people to understand. Request for permission before putting someone on hold, and when taking someone off of hold, thank them. When you promise to return a call, ensure you do so and that you keep within the promised time frame. Inform a person before transferring their call and explain the need for the transfer. Confirm that the person a call is being transferred to is available before transferring a call. Give the person’s name to the party who is being transferred.Always end the phone call with a positive ending like, “Thank you for calling.” Or “Have a good day.”

Never leave the line open, instead place the person on hold and check with them frequently. If you do not know the answer to a question, it is more appropriate to inform the caller that you will find the appropriate information instead of saying, “I don’t know”. You should never be rude to a client or talk in a way that might be construed to be rude. It is important to speak in a polite manner as you would expect others to speak to you. Slang and swear words should never be used and are illegal in some circumstances. Never argue with a caller Never transfer a call prior to informing the person on the phone and requesting them for permission to do so.

We cannot always choose our audience but we can always choose how we communicate.

Neck pain or a stiff neck is a common problem and is generally nothing to worry about. The pain and stiffness usually

gets better after a few days or weeks, and is rarely a sign of a more serious problem. You can get a painful or stiff neck if you sleep in an awkward position, use a computer for a prolonged period of time, or strain a muscle because of bad posture.Anxiety and stress can also sometimes cause tension in your neck muscles, which can lead to pain in your neck. You can normally manage your symptoms at home by following the advice below.

Managing neck pain at homeFor most of the types of neck pain described above, the advice is generally the same: carry on with

your normal daily activities, keep active, and take painkillers to relieve the symptoms. You can also take these steps to manage your pain: Take regular doses of paracetamol, ibuprofen, or a combination of the two, to control pain – ibuprofen gel can be rubbed on to your neck as an alternative to taking tablets. Try holding a hot water bottle or heat pack to your neck – this can help reduce the pain and any muscle spasms, although some people find cold packs offer better relief

Sleep on a low, firm pillow at night – using too many pillows may force your neck to bend unnaturally Check your posture – bad posture can aggravate the pain, and it may have caused it in the first place Avoid wearing a neck collar – there is no evidence to suggest wearing

a neck collar will help to heal your neck, and it’s generally better to keep your neck mobile

Avoid driving if you find it difficult to turn your head – this may prevent you being able to view traffic If your neck is stiff or twisted, try some neck exercises – gently tense your neck muscles as you tilt your head up and down and from side to side, and as you carefully twist your neck from left to right; these exercises will help strengthen your neck muscles and improve your range of movement.

Many people gazing into computers or staring down into smart phones most of the day, it’s no wonder data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 60 percent of people have experienced

neck pain within the past three months.

A stiff neck typically is the result of muscles weakening over time from poor posture or misuse, Looking down at your computer monitor all day can cause the muscles around the neck joints to tire and become overstretched.

Driving for long periods of time or looking at your smart phone can have the same effect. If you’re doing this day after day, it can add up and can displace your neck joints. When your neck muscles become weak and you try to turn your head, the joint no longer moves smoothly because it’s now out of place, Often the joint catches on something, either pulling a muscle or hitting the nerve irregularly, or maybe both.

Then you’ll have instant pain and your body has a protective spasm. Your body doesn’t want you to get hurt more, so it will clench, causing you to feel like you can’t even move and leaving you wondering what you did to injure yourself.” Stretching can keep pain at bay. Putting your monitor at eye level, sitting up straight and avoiding tilting and twisting your head down or to the side while you’re on the computer can help you avoid neck pain. When you’re driving or looking at your smart phone, be sure to take frequent breaks and avoid having your neck bent forward for long periods of time.

The key to relief for a stiff neck is proper stretching and manipulation. Here are some stretches you can try at your desk or in the car that may help you to avoid a stiff neck:

• Roll your shoulders backwards and down 10 times

• Squeeze your shoulder blades together 10 times

• Push your head backwards into your car head rest or hands and hold for 30 seconds

• Bring your ear to your shoulder 10 times on each side

• Take care when you sleep• If your neck is bothering you, you

also should pay attention to your sleep positions. Sleep only on your side or on your back – never on your stomach.

When you sleep on your stomach, often you will end up twisting your head one way or the other for hours at a time. Sleeping on your stomach also can affect your low back because your belly sinks in to the bed if you don’t have enough support.

For minor, common causes of neck pain, try these simple remedies:• Apply heat or ice to the

painful area. Use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, then use heat after that. Heat may be applied with warm showers, hot compresses or a heating pad. Be sure not to fall asleep with a heating pad or ice bag in place to avoid skin injuries.

• Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

• Keep moving, but avoid jerking or painful activities. This helps calm your symptoms and reduce inflammation.

• Do slow range-of-motion exercises, up and down, side to side, and from ear to ear. This

helps to gently stretch the neck muscles.

• Have a partner gently massage the sore or painful areas.

• Try sleeping on a firm mattress without a pillow or with a special neck pillow.

• Ask your health care provider about using a soft neck collar to relieve discomfort. Do not use the collar for a long time. Doing so can make your neck muscles weaker.

If the pain gets in the way of your daily activities, Please call your doctor.

Dengue fever is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas and is caused by viruses that are transmitted to people by

mosquitoes. Dengue fever usually causes fever, skin rash, headache and severe muscle and joint pains. The unusually severe muscle and joint pains can make people assume distorted body positions

Dengue fever is estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to cause about 50-100 million infections per year worldwide. The first clinical report of dengue fever was in 1789 by B. Rush.

The Chinese may have described the disease associated with “flying insects” as early as 420 AD. Africans described “ka dinga pepo” as cramp-like and caused by an evil spirit. The Spanish are thought to have changed “dinga” to dengue since it means fastidious or careful in Spanish, which describes the gait of people trying to reduce the pain of walking.

Unfortunately, the disease incidence seems to be increasing. Researchers suggest the surge in dengue fever may be due to several factors:Increased urban crowding with more sites for mosquitoes to developInternational commerce that contains infected mosquitoes, thus introducing the disease to areas previously free of the disease. Local and world

D e n g u e F e v e renvironmental changes that allow mosquitoes to survive the winter months. International travelers who carry the disease to areas where mosquitoes have not been previously infected.

Causes & TransmissionFour closely related viruses cause dengue fever. The viruses are transmitted from Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes to humans in a viral life cycle that requires both humans and these mosquitoes. There is no human-to-human dengue fever transmission. Once a mosquito is infected, it remains infected for its life span. A human can infect mosquitoes when the human has a high number of viruses in the blood (right before symptoms develop).

Risk FactorsThe risk factors for dengue fever are as follows:Travelling to or living in endemic or outbreak areas, especially if no mosquito control is attempted by the people or government

Mosquito bitesA repeated infection with another serovar of dengue virus with antibodies in the serum active against the first infecting virus typeNot taking precautions to avoid mosquito bites

Symptoms of infection usually start

about four to 15 days (the incubation period is typically four to seven days) after a mosquito bite transfers the viruses to the human. In most instances, the disease lasts about 3 to 10 days, although a few patients’ symptoms may last longer. During the incubation period, large amounts of the virus are present in the person’s blood just before the person becomes symptomatic; this is when a mosquito that may be uninfected can pick up viruses that can be transferred to other humans. However, the virus has to develop within the mosquito for a few days before it is ready to be transferred during the blood meal (mosquito bite)

Is Dengue Fever Contagious?Dengue fever is not contagious; it is not spread from person to person. Dengue fever viruses require a vector, a mosquito that allows the virus to mature within the mosquito before the mosquito can effectively transfer the viruses to humans during a blood meal.

A plumber attended to a leaking faucet at the neurosurgeon’s house. After a two-minute job, he demanded $150. The neurosurgeon exclaimed, “I don’t even charge that amount and I am a brain surgeon.” The plumber replied, “I agree. You are right! I too, didn’t either, when I was a surgeon. That’s why I switched to plumbing.

I was very scared about going to the eye doctor to get a certain procedure done on my eyes. The doctor tried to put me at ease but to no avail. It was after he finished with my first eye that I nearly jumped out of the chair. “There there”, he said “only one eye left!”

A doctor asks, “how is that little girl doing who swallowed ten quarters last night?”. The nurse replies, “No change yet.”

Patient: ‘Doctor, I think I need glasses.’ Teller: ‘You certainly do! This is a bank.’

Patient: How much to have this tooth pulled? Dentist: $100.00. Patient: $100.00 for just a few minutes work? Dentist: Well, I can extract it very slowly if you like.

She has no rigors or chills but her husband says she was very hot in bed last night.

Patient was released to outpatient department without dressing.
