THE REV. JAMES F. LANIGAN
Seattle University, always desirous to recognize and acclaim the out-standing accomplishments of a fellow educator, is proud on this occasion to honor publicly the singular contributions to the education of Catholic youth made by the Reverend James F. Lanigan, Pastor of the Holy Rosary Church in Seattle.
Father Lanigan, since 1914, the year of his ordination to the sacred priest-hood, has devoted himself unhesitatingly to the needs and interests of Catholic youth in the Diocese of Seattle. He accepted the challenge of a great opportunity with vision and foresight. As General Supervisor of the Catholic Social Betterment League in Seattle in 1917, he organized for the first time in the United States, a systematic approach to the alleviation of temporal misfortune, particularly among the young. What he did in Seattle proved to be a most constructive example to other communities throughout the nation. Today he serves in an advisory capacity to the administration of the Catholic Charities he helped establish in Seattle.
But it is because of his work as an educator that Seattle University is particularly pleased to receive him into the family of its Alumni.
In 1923, under considerable expense and difficulty, Father Lanigan made his first direct contribution to the educational work of the Diocese; he suc-ceeded in building the parochial school in St. Margaret's Parish where he was pastor at the time. As pastor of Holy Rosary Church for the past twenty-seven years, he has organized and maintained what has since become a model parochial institution. In addition to church, rectory and convent which he has built, he supervises, under the direction of the Sisters of St. Dominic, a grade and high school program, and operates them without cost to the children who attend them. It is this system which Seattle University recognizes as a monument of more than concrete and steel not only to the devotion and generosity of the people of Holy Rosary Parish, but more especiall y to the administrative ability, the spiritual leadership and the untiring interest in Catholic education of their good Pastor, Father Lanigan.
Father Lanigan's interest in music is evidenced by the excellent Holy Rosary High School All-Girls' Choir, unexcelled in their field. His love for artistic beauty is for all to see in the beautiful Holy Rosary Church, its adorning art, its majestic windows and its imposing exterior, just a few weeks ago fully and irrevocably consecrated to the service of God.
The innumerable ways in which Father Lanigan has shown a personal interest in Seattle University will never be fully appreciated or adequately repaid.
It is, then, the humble effort of Seattle University on this occasion to acknowledge this interest and these many devoted accomplishments by be-stowing upon Father James F. Lanigan the highest honor within its power to grant—the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.
