Superintendent recognitions During superintendent recognitions, Tony Apostle and the board recognized: Aylen Junior High School students who won individual and team awards during the 2007 Washington Technology Student Association conference last month in Everett. Each year, the district recognizes several volunteers and one volunteer coordina- tor for their outstanding contributions to children. The board honored each of the winners this year during a special recognition and reception, attended by school staff and the honorees’ families and friends. This year’s winners and their photos are featured on the reverse side of this issue of Board Highlights. They will also be featured in stories and photographs in the May issue of Connections. Directors unanimously agreed Monday night to appoint two new committee mem- bers, Stan Cross and James McBride. Cross will fill the remain- ing two years of the position vacated by Craig Marburger, who resigned due to reloca- tion. McBride will fill a seat vacated by Ellen Sas, who resigned due to the expiration of her three-year term. McBride has been appointed to serve the next three years. Technology club advisor Nyla Simonetti shared about the conference and intro- duced the four student winners: Jason Wienecke, Derek Cragle, Wil DeYoung, and David Hoover. Students competed and brought home awards in events including Career Challenge, Leadership Challenge, Technology Bowl, and Problem Solving. TSA is the only student organization at Aylen devoted exclusively to the needs of technology education students. The asso- ciation is open to students throughout the country who are enrolled in or who have completed technology education courses. Members learn through competitive events, leadership opportunities, and more. The board presented each of the four Aylen students with a certificate of rec- ognition. Stan Cross James McBride

Volunteer of the YearTerry ThomasFruitland Elementary School

Lisa Westover, a volunteer at Ballou Junior High School, has been named Volunteer of the Year for the 2006-07 school year.

Westover received an Award of Recognition plaque, and the Ballou administration received a plaque to post in the school building. Her name is also added to a plaque that is on display at the Education Service Center in downtown Puyallup.

Terry Thomas, a volunteer at Fruitland Elementary School, has been named Volunteer of the Year for the 2006-07 school year.

Thomas received an Award of Recognition plaque, and the Fruitland administration received a plaque to post in the school building. Her name is also added to a plaque that is on display at the Education Service Center in downtown Puyallup.

Volunteer Coordinator of the YearViengkham “Pheng” NixSpinning Elementary School

Viengkham “Pheng” Nix, a volunteer coordinator at Spinning Elementary School, has been named Volun-teer Coordinator of the Year.

Nix received an Award of Merit plaque, and the Spin-ning school administration received a plaque to post in the school building. Her name is also added to a plaque that is on display at the Education Service Center in downtown Puyallup.

Golden Apple Award, The Mascaro FamilyWildwood Elementary School

Wildwood Elementary School volunteers Deanna Mas-caro, her husband, Tom, and their fi fth-grade daughters, Hayley and Lauren, are this year’s Golden Apple Award recipients. The family volunteers in the Help One Stu-dent To Succeed (HOSTS) program.

The award is given to volunteers who have shown outstand-ing dedication and have made signifi cant contributions to students. The family received a golden apple paperweight, and each member received a golden apple pin.
