1944-2019 # NWC 75 November 2019 General Manager’s Message Bean harvest continued through October, allowing good progress on local winter wheat planting. As we go to print, our growers are working hard to complete bean harvest and get the last acres of winter wheat planted. Corn harvest is underway in many areas. We are starting to prepare equipment for winter storage, but we will be keeping a number of spreaders and the Vector available for fall plow-down applications. Contact your NWC field man to take advantage of fall plow-down service discounts. What’s the advantage? Spring work done now and improved availability of nutrients. Call us to order soil testing, or arrange to borrow a probe, forms, and bags to take your own and we will send them away for you. 2020 seed booking has begun in earnest and, as always, we encourage you to book your seed now because the best varieties always sell out first! Energy division petroleum and propane trucks are very busy with the start of the home heat season, which coincides with the busy fall harvest, crop drying, and tillage seasons. Propane equipment installation, 10-year inspections and other service work is keeping our Energy Team busy. We have added a fourth delivery unit to our propane fleet to provide extra delivery capacity for the busy home heat season. We expect to take delivery of a new petroleum truck in the coming weeks. Thank you in advance for giving us as much notice as possible for your fuel requirements, trimming low hanging branches and marking driveways ahead of the snow we know will come eventually. Your Co-op Staff is gearing up for Customer Appreciation Days, November 22nd – 30th. Join us for coffee and treats served at all locations and watch for our flyer to see all the great deals we have for you! Plan on joining us on December 5th at the Neustadt Community Hall for our 75th Annual Meeting. We are going to have a great meal, bring you up to speed on operations, our projects, and finish the evening with some social time for our members to enjoy a good old-fashioned visit! As we enter our 76th year of operation we need to thank you, our member owners, for your continued support. We’ve been your Co-op for 75 years. We are here for you, to serve, help, coach, inspire, find and solve. Energy NotesFall is upon us, harvest is underway and our fuel trucks have been busy. We may even be into crop drying as you read this. We thank everyone for providing as much notice as possible for your energy requirements. Fall is a great time to maintain the trees and greenery that grow near your driveway. We are very proud of our great looking fleet of delivery trucks and your cooperation in keeping your lane free of low hanging branches is greatly appreciated. It is also a great time to mark your lanes and gateways before the ground freezes and the snow flies. As the cold weather is upon us, reminder to our “will call” customers that we require 3 days notice for home heat deliveries. If you are currently on “will call” and wish to be on automatic please give our team a call!

There are many ways to contact the Energy Division with your inquiries or order needs. Please see below or scan the QR code. Please note the “Cell” number provided receives text messages ONLY.

Garden CornerBy Lina Calvert

Christmas is a time for tradition, festive scents, warm wishes, and holiday décor. You can easily turn your home into a winter wonderland with some beautiful Christmas plants and greenery from your local garden centre!

Nothing says Christmas like a poinsettia! These traditional flowering plants are most common in bright red, but there is a recent trend towards whites, pinks, marbled, and tricolour poinsettias. Poinsettias are relatively easy to keep as long as you mind the following tips when caring for them:

• Traditionally a tropical understory plant, poinsettias love a bright filtered light (approximately 6 hrs per day is best)

• Poinsettias like to be warm – keep them in an area that is between 15°C - 22°C

• Keep away from drafts, cold windows, intense heat from a wood stove or heating vents

• Keep your poinsettia evenly moist – these plants cannot take being overwatered! As the saying goes, “less is more”

• Do not fertilize your poinsettia while it is in bloom - Save the fertilizing for after the holidays, when the blooms are fading. Many people keep poinsettias for several years!

Christmas cactus, or Zygo cactus, is another favourite for the holidays. This plant has a desert look to it, but its gorgeous blooms add colour to any home in winter! Bright reds, pinks, corals, and whites cover these plants when in full bloom, and they should bloom for several weeks’ right around the holidays. Check out our tips on how to keep your Christmas cactus blooming its best!

• Christmas cactus do appreciate a bit of humidity - mist lightly while it is in full bloom

• Keep soil consistently moist but not too wet• Lack of water and dramatic temperature swings will cause

bloom droppage• Maintain an optimal temperature of 18°C - 22°C • They do not need direct sunlight – east facing windows and

bright rooms are best

Many people have success keeping Christmas cactus from year to year; be sure to give your cactus an extended period of darkness (in spring/summer) so it can regain energy. Then bring it out, repot, fertilize, and you should be on your way to a reblooming Christmas cactus!

New favourite plants that are trending for Christmas are frosty ferns, Norfolk pine trees, and mini cypress trees. All of these Christmas foliage plants make a welcome addition to a holiday display or table and offer something different than the usual houseplants as well.

Don’t forget about some of the most fragrant items of the holiday season – trees and greens! Our branches will carry an assortment of live Christmas tree sizes, and our shipments will arrive mid-November. We will also carry a large assortment of greenery, garland, wreaths, and door swags at our garden centres, arriving early-mid November. Put your own creative flair on our basic greenery items, or check out our “ready to go” items. Check out your local branch for our unique assortment of holiday plants, and

2020 Corn and Soybean Seed - Early Order and Booking Savings

With soybean harvest completed and grain corn rolling on, it is time to start thinking about ordering your seed for 2020. We offer a wide range of corn and soybean varieties from PRIDE Seeds, DEKALB, NK Seeds, PROSeeds and SeCan. There are many early order and pay discounts to take advantage of, so we would suggest putting your order in before the end of the month. This will also help guarantee that you get your first choice of variety, as they can sell out.

Do you grow corn silage or haylage? There are also early booking/pay savings out for alfalfa, tripper, grass seed, hay acid and silage inoculant. Talk to your NWC Crop Specialist to go over the early booking and pay opportunities, and to figure out which seed varieties will work best for your farm.

Fall Fertility Application

Many growers have taken advantage of NWC’s fall fertility application discounts, but if you haven’t yet there is still time to apply fall Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) for the 2020 crop. However, if you are not applying it to a growing crop, or not working it in, it is not advised to apply phosphorus. Why? Primarily because there is a high chance the P will run off, and the nutrient will not stay in the field. Not only is this bad for the environment, it is not great economically, as the investment you made in fertilizer is no longer in your field. On top of this, it does not follow the 4R Nutrient Stewardship guidelines, as applying late season P is not what would be considered the ‘right time’ to do so. Fortunately, with potassium there is not the same concern, and it can be

applied late into the season if the ground is not frozen. Talk to your NWC Crop Specialist to determine the right rate of fall applied fertilizer, and to make sure you and your farm are complying with 4R nutrient management stewardship.
