Twenty-Fi h Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Confirmation classes began this past week, and with the return of students, there is a natural increase in activity for the parish. Part of that is preparations for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation on November 6th, and all of the things that go along with it, including the inscription ceremony that takes place at the 10am Mass. There are also the other grade levels which will return in October, to prepare our children for the celebration of Sacraments and for lives as adults in the Faith. Our new Mass schedule is still something we need to get used to, and the small things that were overlooked are being addressed. As the Diocese continues to address the diminishing numbers of priests, we will have to examine our Mass schedule in relation to those of neighboring parishes, to allow for the future inevitability of priests covering multiple parishes. Back in June, I concelebrated the Mass of Ordination for six men, who became priests, two of whom I have known for several years, as they progressed through seminary formation. While it was definitely gratifying to have six ordained, the fact is this was an exceptional year with that number, and even though six men became priests, we also had many retire and some go on to their final reward. While vocations begin in the home, with parents and family providing a living example of what it means to be a follower of Christ, the rest of us can do our part by praying for vocations and encouraging young people to consider a call to priesthood and religious life. It was my hope to resume the Church History lecture series this past year, unfortunately the obligations of being the pastor (as well as the head of maintenance, business manager, and attempting to raise money for the parish through various activities) prevented me from something I love doing. One of the projects that I have been working on will help educate people on various aspects of the Faith, and hopefully encourage them to come to church. Speaking of catechism, the Formed program is still available for parishioners (and friends) free of charge, to subscribe, just go to our website and click on the Formed page. There are things we have control over, things we can do to make a difference, and then there are things that are out of our hands. Over this past year, as a result of an extremely biased Newsday article, we lost the services of two companies, who had volunteered to take care of various projects on the parish grounds. While we have those who continue to volunteer to care for parts of the property, planting flowers, weeding, and maintaining flower beds, there is still much that needs to be done, including landscaping the front of the church and some other areas. Hopefully by the Spring we will have a better grasp on the situation. On the other side, much has been accomplished with the parish buildings and property. After many years, the church roof has finally been repaired to the point that it is no longer leaking (knock wood), and the parish center roof (over the office, chapel and classrooms) has been completely replaced, leaving the rectory roof, which is being seal coated to prevent leaks for another year or more. Ceiling tiles for the classrooms and other parts of the parish center are being replaced by the Knights of Columbus Council 725. Our Youth Ministry/Young Adult Apostolate area in the basement of the Rectory has been given a good cleaning and painting, in preparation for this year’s activities. Our heating systems in the church, parish center, and rectory are ready for the coming season, and the air-conditioning in the parish center provided relief during the summer months, when Sunday Masses were relocated there. Someone asked if we would have air-conditioning in the church next year; unfortunately, we do not have the resources needed to do that at this point. It is my hope, over the next few years, to raise the money needed to put in a geothermal system, which will provide cool temperatures in the summer, replace our heating system, which is getting older, and eliminate the fuel bills for the church. In everything we do here at Mount Carmel, we have to do it with an eye to the future of the Church in Patchogue and throughout the eastern part of the Diocese. With God’s grace, we will have a church, and a community, which will make children exclaim “God lives here!” Pax,

Fr. Henry

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ eptember 8th is for Special Collection today is for the Diocesean Co-llection to the Catholic Univerity of America. September 22nd will be the collection to the Pope Pius X Enriched Living Facility. Even in retirement our senior priests retain roles as our shepherds, and St. Pius X enables these dedi-cated men who live there to be fully engaged mem-bers of the community. “Still on duty,” they serve as our teachers, counselors, and spiritual leaders. The special collection for retired priests living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility will take place this weekend. Please be as generous as possible! Thank You!

GOD IS ON THE SIDE OF THE POOR Two of today’s readings make it quite clear that God is on the side of the poor. Amos describes in detail the exploitation of the poor and needy. The psalm repeats that God acts to benefit the poor and lowly. But Luke turns things upside down, telling a tale of a conflicted steward, about to be fired, who demonstrates his clever-ness and is rewarded. Like the community to whom Paul writes in Timothy, these readings are personal, directed to believers, members of the Jewish and Christian communities, who struggle to deal with personal choices about how to conduct their lives. They offer an outline for how God wishes us to live in a world as complicated and as confusing as our own. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Admission $10.00 per seat

During this 100th year we are celebrating a long time for a worship place, but it was not built on sentiments, it was built on love. We are a shining example that we are still here because of all those who came together to watch this community grow by attending masses, celebrating the sacraments and holding bingos, luncheons, and fundraising events, all which moved us from a small church to a large one with a large Rectory and then a Parish Center. So now do we stop? No we go forward as before. We need the help of our parishioners to help collect gifts, gift-cards, sponsors, cake and coffee, more baskets and things to fill them. We need help giving letters to stores you frequent.. Have any gifts you have not returned so donate new things. Gentlemen we are asking for table and chair set up Thursday November 7th. We are also asking for help the night of the event with sales, refreshment and clean up. How about those ticket sales or calling items making hotdogs? Children and Teens, can you wrap a basket or make a bow? Can you be a runner or a refreshment person? Can you help a couple of hours before helping sort and making signs. Ask your friends, invite your parents who can come with their friends, neighbors or co-workers for a night of fun. The solicitation letters are made and awaiting you. Tickets go on sale September 22. All things can be picked up in the Parish Center business Office, gifts can be dropped off before masses or at the office.
