Third Sunday of Advent From the Pastors Desk
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This weekend we celebrate Gaudate Sunday, which is marked by the Rose-colored vestments and the lighting of the candle of the same color. Gaudate comes from the Latin to rejoice, and the idea, as most of have been told at one point of time or another, is that the purple of waiting, of mourning, is brightened by the promise of Christmas joy, which is symbolized by white. Many times our lives contain this combination of waiting and mourning, combined with the brilliance of the hope and joy, and so our Gaudate Sunday reminds us to look forward to the joy that awaits us. Many of you know, whether through homilies or the bulletin, that I arrived at my vocation as a priest through a round about way, having worked a number of jobs to support myself through school and travels. At several places I worked with youth, in crisis situations and those in our juvenile system, and oftentimes I look back on these young men and women wondering what became of them. Recently, I was thinking of one of those boys, who I knew from a former co-worker and previous Google searches had battles with addiction and a tragedy in his twenties. As I found him online, I noticed another person, connected to one of the other boys, who I had had no luck in tracking down, and I found out why. Back in 1997, a year after I had last seen Timmy, he died in a car crash, drunk, and fleeing the State Troopers as the car he was driving had been stolen by his cousin. Without getting into details about how much heartache I feel when I find out one of my boys died, this was even more so, as Timmy stood out among them. As I said, we all have these times in our lives when things seem dark, when it is difficult to get out of bed and face another day, but we need to carry on, to see the light of hope that Christ has given to us. Only in the Light of the Resurrection, in the Reality of the Risen Christ, can we hope to make sense of the heartache and anguish we experience in this world. Sometimes though, we also receive a blessing to show us the light in these times; a friend of mine, the Director of Religious Education in another parish I was in sent me a copy of a letter that parents had written to their son, as he is preparing for Confirmation. Dear ______, Just about 12 years ago, Dad and I had you baptized in our living room with just Thomas, you, us and Fr. Henry present. We had asked for Fr. Henry to come and bless you with the Anointing of the Sick, but he encouraged us to baptize you on the spot. He filled a bowl with water from our sink. Before our eyes he blessed the water for your baptism. It was extraordinary and meaningful. We sat together as a family and welcomed you into the Catholic Faith. We were excited to have you become part of the Church we have grown up in. Your grandparents had us baptized in 1976, their promise to us became our promise to you. Our family is a very strong and deeply rooted Catholic family. It is our intention and lifelong promise to guide you in your faith journey and to keep you Christ focused. So far, you have shown us that you are a fine, loving, prayerful and good young man. You serve others and are always looking for ways to help. We will nurture your gifts, kind heart and giving soul. You’ve proven to us that you have fight, perseverance and love in your heart. While we may find the various things that discourage us, even things that break our hearts, God continues to give us moments that restore hope. Just looking at the Advent wreath, we see that the three candles are not black, without hope, but purple, like the sky before dawn, and though one is diffused with the white light of Christ’s presence, all of them hold the flame that gives off a radiance for us to see by. We never know the true effects of our actions, but we do know that God works through us and the good we do in His name reverberates throughout this world and into the next. Pax, Fr. Henry

December 15, 2019 --third Sunday of Advent REASON TO REJOICE Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news pro-claimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). THE RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT FUND Collection The second collection is, from the Diocese, for the care of the retired clergy and religious. These ded-icated Priests and, Nuns who have given so much to the generation that helped to build the schools, and work at parish’s and the Seminary , all the hospitals and retreat houses. This is only a small mention of what they have given to all the people on long island. This helps to cover the expenses of those retired who still service in any way they can.
