Student SpotlightMichael Rosenberg

As I walked through the student center, I spotted Michael sitting on the couches by the ballrooms, dressed casually in an Alexander Wang for H&M sweater (since he attended the press launch party the night before… jealous), and some causal jeans, waiting patiently for my arrival. Having been involved with the magazine for a good two months now, it was shocking that this was actually the first time I was able to meet our fabulous fashion director, and I was excited to get to learn more about him! When we finally greeted each other, we surprisingly found a quiet spot in the student center, and began chatting away…

1908 Magazine: What are your aspirations and career goals for the future in the fashion world?Michael Rosenberg: Having such a creative mind and being so artistic (my parents enrolled me in private art classes for five years), I think bringing that creativity into fashion will further me in my career. I would love to work at a magazine, say like Vogue or T Magazine, any-thing like that—just being in the creative field is where I want to be. I’ve worked with numerous stylists before and they like my eye on certain things, and it just sort of comes together.

1908: Being the fashion director for 1908 Magazine en-ables you to show off your sense of style. So, what’s your signature style? Because we all know you’re fab-ulous!MR: (Chuckles) Oh no, I’m not! It all just comes to-gether honestly! But my personal style would have to be a little collegiate, preppy, but add a sense of flair and edge to it. I’ll wear a Margiela blazer that’s totally Ryan O’Neal from Love Story--it’s very classic, and I’ll add a nice dusty t-shirt underneath with ripped jeans and may-be a flat sandal or a Van sneaker. It just all depends on my mood, but usually I tend to stick to something that’s classic and incorporate it with something that’s not real-ly on the sense of classic, but totally different.

1908: What’s your favorite thing about fashion?MR: … Everything! (laughs). The stories that come out every month and every year. I feel like everything encompasses not only fashion but things that you see, things that are ordinary in music all encompass fashion, and that’s what I love about it—being able to bring in all aspects of life in, like traveling, the weather, it all just comes together for something. Just seeing the finished product or the final look is what I value the most.

I don’t like things that have been repeated. I like people who don’t look to magazines for trends. I like people who go into their own closet to figure it out.

1908: What are you doing right now? I know that you’re at Engie Style, correct?MR: Yes! I’ve worked with her for about two years now, I’m their men’s fashion director, but I’m also pret-ty much in charge of everything e-commerce related. We do brand consulting, fashion shows and styling for cli-ents. There’s so many sectors to it, so we do it all! We’ve even worked with royalty, Princess Ameerah Al-Taweel from Saudi Arabia! Kanye West worked with Engie in the past as well as a bunch of other influential people. She’s really given me a lot of experience.

1908: Any advice to upcoming MSU fashion students?MR: I have a lot of advice! I want people to know that hard work does pay off and to just be inspired by not only what’s trending but by the people who start the stories. I also advise to hone your own personal style and to know that you can succeed in any field you desire. I grew up in a small town, Oxford, NJ, and my parents supported me no matter what. They wanted me to do what I wanted to do and that was creating art. I started from such a small place and I feel that if I can do that, then I can promote that to other people. I also want other people’s voices in the industry and I think its very cool that you can have a voice in the industry. Always be polite and have manners because you never know who could be your boss one day—it could be the intern next to you, trust me! The fashion industry is so small, everyone knows everyone, and for making connections it’s great. Pretty much, just work hard! Because I did, and blood, sweat, and tears went into it (laughs), but it was worth it.

Meet The FounderDeanna Massa

Deanna Massa, 23-year-old alumni, decided to start 1908 Magazine in the fall of 2014. After spending her years at college being as involved as possible, (including being a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma National Sorority, a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and a part of the MSU Fashion club,) she was inspired to start MSU’s very own fashion magazine. Fashion has always been a part of her life (obviously, since she’s interned for Cosmopolitan, Rent the Runway, CollegeFashionista, Thirdchannel, CoynePR, and Stylitics) and she’s here to tell us the inside scoop about 1908.

What inspired you to start 1908?Over the summer of 2014, I had the opportunity to intern in the fashion department of Cosmopolitan Magazine. This experience was a dream come true for me… I mean, what fashion girl wouldn’t love that! I got to touch Manolo Blahniks, Christian Louboutins, Chanel and Diane Von Furstenberg pieces all day. This experience allowed me to ex-pand my knowledge of the magazine industry, as well as the fashion industry, and witness the type of work that is necessary to put out a successful pub-lication. I came out of my internship searching for an on-campus fashion magazine that I could get in-volved in, but I came to realize that Montclair State University did not have one. So, I created one! Two weeks later, I had everything planned out and forty staff members supporting me. Who influenced you most in terms of fashion while growing up?My grandmother is a seamstress and worked in a factory sewing blouses. When I was a child, she would teach me how to design and sew. We used to make clothing for my dolls. I was introduced to fashion through her at a very young age and I’ve had a passion for it ever since. She gifted me my first sewing machine, actually.

Who’s your celebrity fashion inspiration? So many celebrity fashion icons inspire my person-al style! (Nicole Richie, Kourtney Kardashian and Blake Lively to name a few.) Though, my ultimate style icon is Rachel Zoe. She’s so chic, classy, and confident. Not only do I admire her awesome fash-ion sense, but she also just seems to have life all figured out. A loving husband, two kids, living in NYC, an A-list stylist, a designer, owns her own corporation, always traveling and still has time to Instagram...sign me up!

What are your goals regarding 1908 Magazine?I hope for a great amount of growth and improve-ment for the future of 1908 Magazine. I want to visit Montclair State University years from now and come back to an incredibly successful and con-tinuously flourishing student-made fashion maga-zine that I once started!

What do you hope readers will get out of 1908?1908 Magazine is meant to showcase the skills of Montclair State University’s creative community, while being fun, light-hearted, and entertaining! I hope readers will become more aware of their fel-low classmates’ talents through the 1908 Magazine publication, as well as take away great fashion, beauty, and health tips from the 1908 Magazine website.
