The modern part of #19s design is its appearance,
but its also the techniques, materials, and systems
used to solve the design challenge.
Why another chair?
We set out to create a chair whose form and function
would solve the challenges of its predecessors anddramatically improve the users experience. This meantaddressing some critical areas, including weight acti-vation, passive recline ergonomics, construction andmaterials, unobtrusive lumbar support, thermal regula-tion, and user adjustability with minimal controls. Thegoal was a chair that worked integrally with the humanbody and supported the human body in new andinnovative ways; the user, in that sense, was the mostcritical part of the system. Our effort to improve ledto innovation and 47 patents and patents-pending.18 integral parts, plus one equally integral human
being resulted in #19.
#19 takes ergonomics to a new level. Its design isbased on the most advanced ergonomic and technicalinformation available. Using a combination of passiveadjustments, thermal regulation, and innovative mate-rials, #19 delivers unsurpassed comfort and perform-ance, as well as optimal sitting health.
Allsteel makes beautiful work tools. #19 is no exception. It artfully addresses the complexities of seating, andits hyper-ergonomic capabilities are unprecedented.
The chair is designed to fit multiple body types equallywell; one chair fits all. #19s parts and materials werechosenand in some cases, createdexpressly for theuser and the work environment. Nothing is off-the-shelf.
In the end, #19s design advances seating technologyand promotes a healthy, productive work environment.

DESIGN
A tug handle acts as both structural suppor
and a hand-hold for chair mobility.
Ball joints allow the back of the chair to
rotate freely as the user moves.
Naturally shaped, intuitive controls give a
clear indication of their function.
[ purposeful design in action ]
[ based on interviews with:Marcus Koepke, Furniture Design Consultant; Lead Designer, #19 ] +
Process
#19 had to contribute to the advancement of a better user experi-
ence. During the design process, we chose not to visualize theend result. But sometimes that interferes with the creativity ofengineering. The process was very flexible. For the first severalmonths, the team concentrated exclusively on the technical sideform followed function. We wanted to define the comfort andfunctional aspects of working at a desk, and solve the challengesmost users encounter in their work environments.
Goal
Allsteel calls it Purposeful DesignTM. Function, purpose, and
appearance are tied together. Something that is critical to thechairs performance can also be beautiful. The modern part of#19s design is its appearance, but its also the techniques, mate-rials, and systems used to solve the design challenge.
Perspective
Frequently, chair designers focus exclusively on the user. With #19,the team focused on how the user works in his or her environ-ment. This thought process helped us design innovative solutionsto problems never before considered with other chairs. We made
sure we always accounted for the human body at work, and howthe environment affects productivity. That was important to us. Wedesigned #19 for the user; no compromises were made.

ERGONOMIC INNOVATIONS
Tria and VenTechthermal regulation
An innovative feature of #19 is its thermal characteris-
tics, both in the seat and the back, which manage bothheat accumulation and loss (see figure 1).
#19s seat technology, Tria, is a three-layer constructionconsisting of a specially constructed cushion form,Technogel center, and a microporous Tria compliantseat upholstery. Besides providing comfort and regu-lating temperature, the Technogel layer is odor- andplasticizer-free, so it will not harden over time.Technogel is the same material used in wheelchairs, bicycle seats, and running shoes. In a test conducted bythe Biomechanischen Institute of Munich, Technogels
performance was measured against silicon, EVA,poron, and other PU gels. Technogel proved to be theonly material that offered high shock absorption andhigh pressure distribution.
The Tria compliant upholstery is a double layer of inter-locking loops. It is more breathable than most seatingupholstery and promotes air circulation through thecushion for optimal user comfort. #19s upholstery is alsodesigned to be durable and present a consistentappearance over time.
VenTech, the thermal weave used in the chair back,is exclusive to #19. Outdoor gear and athletic shoematerials were considered. In the end, VenTech wasdesigned by Marcus Koepke and the Allsteel team. This multi-dimensional fabric is more dense thanmesh, and is composed of a structural backing and asoft front designed to breathe. It has the dimensionalquality needed to retain warmth while remainingslightly cooler than core body temperature.
Thermal regulation is one of the newest concepts inergonomics and exclusive to #19s design. Working
together, Tria and VenTech maintain a consistent, comfortable temperature that enhances both comfortand productivity.

Temperature regulation
The number one complaint in offices today istemperature regulation. #19s seat and back aredesigned to maintain a temperature ideal for work. This keeps the user from engaging in self-regulatoryprocesses (sweating, shivering, posture adjustments, etc.) which are direct measures of discomfort and caninterfere with work. A thermal-regulating chairenhances productivity by minimizing the adjustmentsthe user has to make to stay comfortable.
To ensure #19 had the right thermal capabilities, temperature changes were monitored at specific
contact points, as well as across the users clothingand skin. Temperature increase was recorded simulta-neously at 20 critical locations while the user engagedin different tasking activities. An advanced, 64-channelsystem was used for real-time monitoring. In addition, the thermal properties of different fabrics were evalu-ated according to standard test procedures. Theresult: Tria and VenTech, technologies exclusive toAllsteel that regulate temperature.
Long-term comfort
#19s seat is designed to maintain comfort atdifferent levels of pressure and recover easily afterweight is removed. Pressure calibration happens assoon as the user sits and is maintained over time. This effect was verified using digital modeling tools.#19s seat achieves pressure equilibrium without theneed to shift body weight to unhealthy placesforexample, the underside of the front of the thigh, which can obstruct circulation.
#19s seat also distributes and levels pressure more
evenly over larger areas than most chairs (see figure 3).The layer of Technogel aids in this process. It reducespressure concentrations typical in many conventionalchairs and conforms better to the body. Technogelmoves in multiple directions as the user moves, mini-mizing shear stress on the skin.

Form was more than an
aesthetic considerationit
was a necessity. Even the
casters were custom designed.
The chair seat feels hard the longer I sit.
Chairs with mesh and traditional padded seats are unable todistribute pressure as effectively and eventually lose resiliency.#19s Tria calibrated seat system is made up of channeledfoam, Technogel, and Tria compliant seat upholstery. TheTechnogel layer (the same shock-absorbing material in bicycleseats and running shoes) distributes pressure for a widerange of body weights, minimizes the pulling effect on yourskin, and keeps its resiliency.
Im often too hot or cold while I work.
#19 is designed with the unprecedented ability to managetemperature. The back material, VenTech, is a multi-dimen-sional weave that holds warmth while remaining breathable. And the seat technology, Tria, dissipates heat buildup so younever feel too hot or cold as you work. The channeled foampumps air through the seat; working with the breathable Triacompliant upholstery, it keeps you at a comfortable tempera-ture as long as youre seated.
I dont understand all of these levers and knobs.
#19 can be fully adjusted using only a few intuitively designedcontrols. The shape of the pneumatic height adjustment andtilt limiting levers indicate their direction of movement, soadjustment is both simple and spontaneous. The Plexuslumbar support can be positioned while seated. With #19,detailed user instructions are not necessary.
My chair rolls on hardwood but not carpet.
#19s 80mm diameter casters are custom designed to workon any flooring surface, including hardwood, carpet, cement, and tile. Mobility is never compromised by the type of flooryoure on. The casters will not scratch or gouge delicateflooring surfaces, like hardwood.

Avatara healthier sit
When reclining in #19, the body angle increases, and so doescirculation. This delivers blood and oxygen to the extremities, and prevents fatigue and discomfort. In its fully reclined position,#19 leans back 30 from upright. The back of the seat gentlyrises, creating a back-to-seat ratio of 4:1, more than any otherchair. The lift of the seat also provides additional pelvic supportand ensures proper alignment of the spine. Avatar creates abetter body angle that optimizes circulation with minimal usereffort. In addition, Avatar keeps the users line of sight steadyduring recline.
Plexuslower back support
The Plexus lumbar system creates lower back support byincreasing fabric tension and firmness over a vertical range of3.25". A sliding component tenses the contoured fabric and canbe easily adjusted while the user is seated. Because lower backsupport comes from fabric tension and not an added structuralelement, the breathability and thermal properties of the
VenTech weave are uninterrupted.
Triacalibrated comfort
#19s seat incorporates two layers of foam, Technogel, and Triacompliant seat upholstery. Together, they distribute pressureevenly and take away heat buildup. The layer of Technogel restson top of a channeled base foam. Technogels purpose is todistribute pressure evenly over a greater area and reduce peakpressure points. It also moves in multiple directions as the usermoves, reducing shear stress on the skin. The channeled foam
allows air to circulate through the seat, dissipating heat foroptimal temperature. And the Tria compliant upholstery, made ofa double layer of interlocking loops, fits to the seat without glue.It conforms perfectly to the cushion and allows it to breathe.

120.25 PROBLEMS SOLVED
I have to adjust my chairs tension in order to recline.
#19s passive recline is weight-activated. When pressure isapplied to the back, it reclines easily and fluidly, and the backof the seat rises gently while perfectly balancing the user. Thissimultaneous motion is enabled by Avatars synchronizing linklocated under the seat towards the back. Avatar is designedto be smooth and silent, and minimize muscle strain.
My back is not properly supported when I work.
#19 ensures your spine and pelvis get exceptional, contin-uous support. This is the result of: (1) the weight-activatedAvatar motion, which keeps the chairs back with you as youmove; (2) a flexible back carrier, which is pliable to pressure
and attached with ball joints for flexibility; and (3) the VenTechweave, which conforms to your shape in every position.
My chair doesnt allow me to shift or change
positions comfortably.
Moving while you work is healthy. Ideally, your chair shouldfacilitate natural motion. #19s Avatar technology uses yourbodys weight and motion to find the best ergonomic posi-tion. When you recline fully, the back-to-seat ratio is 4:1. Thisangle enhances circulation to your extremities, so your lowerbody and legs never feel fatigued.
As I recline, I must continually refocus.
#19s perfectly balanced recline motion, Avatar, lifts the pelvisduring recline, maintaining your line of sight to the worksur-face. The back also moves independently of the armrests, which remain in position to support your arms. No matterwhich recline position youre in, you can continue to workeasily and naturally.
The lumbar support is uncomfortable and
difficult to adjust.
Plexus, #19s lumbar system, does not position a solid objectat your back. Instead, a mechanism moves up and down thechairs flexible back carrier, tensing the VenTech fabric whereyou need it. Your back receives solid, pliant support in justthe right place.

#19 maintains the spines
curvature and gives the userfluid, smooth movement
from one position to the next.
THE BODY IN MOTION
[ based on interviews with: Dr. Malcolm Pope, Director, Liberty/Worksafe Research Center; Head of
Ergonomics Section, University of Aberdeen, Scotland ]
+
Movement is critical to maintaining body health. The level ofease a user experiences when changing positions correlates tohow often he or she moves throughout the day. #19s self-balancing,passive recline motion and smooth recline-support-return actionencourage movement and promote a continuously healthy sit.
Spine
When you go from a standing to a sitting position, the naturalcurvature of the spine changes and the pelvis tilts. A well-designed ergonomic chair, like #19, maintains that natural curva-ture and provides constant, conforming support, cradling thespine in its natural position. This means there is less stress on thespine, and you dont pay a price, in terms of comfort and health, while sitting.
Hip joint
As we shift postures from sitting forward to sitting back, the bodypivots naturally at the hip joint. #19 has been designed to do thesame thing. It maintains the spines curvature, and the chairsperfectly balanced recline gives the user fluid, smooth movementfrom one position to the next, minimizing muscle strain in theback and abdominal muscles. #19 encourages continual motion, which is ideal, since the best posture is a variety of postures
throughout the workday.
Anthropometrics
People vary in shape and size. We wanted #19 to fit the smallestfemale as well as the largest male. It also had to accommodatethe relative proportions of the different parts of their bodies. #19takes these factors into account by incorporating adjustable-height, pivoting arms, a seat height adjustment from 17"-22"(standard cylinder) or 15"-20" (two-stage cylinder), a seat depthrange of 1.5", and a lumbar support range of 3.25".

8/6/2019 19 Tech Brochure
14/16
Background
Prior to the development of #19, our teams had been
trained in life-cycle analysis, which looks at the overallimpact a material has from the time its mined to thetime its finished its useful life. They also understoodbiomimicry, which takes inspiration and guidance fromnatures design solutions. By the time #19 came along,we were ready to make environmentally consciousdecisions. It wasnt a matter of, Do this, but rather,How can we do this? As a result, we followed a hier-archy of recycling that uses a minimum number ofmaterials in the product. #19s frame and base aremade from 100% post-consumer recycled aluminum;88% of the materials in the chair are recyclable.
Content
#19 uses a minimum number of different materials, including aluminum, steel, and some polymers.Materials are joined in a way that makes them easy todisassemble for recycling. Being able to recycle nearlyall the materials in the chair is a critical end-of-life issue.
Assembly
How a product is assembled is crucial to recyclability. If its glued and welded, it is difficult to reconfigurelater. Individual components also cant be separated.By using simple mechanical fasteners, componentscan be disassembled and/or traded. For example, theentire Tria seat system and flexible back carrier areattached to the frame with simple fasteners and canbe easily disengaged and re-attached. The benefit ofusing mechanical fasteners rather than gluing or weldingis that it doesnt generate potentially hazardous wastein the workplace. In the end, nearly everything thatgoes into #19 can be disassembled and returned tothe resource stream for reuse in another form.
SUSTAINABILITY
+
+
[ durability ]
#19 was rigorously tested to measure its durability
and functionality over time, and under differentconditions. The chair withstood maximum
loads for more than 100,000 cycles, assuring its
performance in the field. The casters were loaded
with 300 pounds and run over bump strips for 95
miles to ensure integrity. Testing chair prototypes
on different surfacescarpet, tile, hardwood
guaranteed the casters would be appropriate for all
flooring surfaces.
#19 is weight-activated. As you go from reclining to
sitting upright, the back stays with you. This
action was put through hundreds of thousands oftest cycles to make sure it performed consistently.
#19s recline action is extremely smooth and will
remain this way after years of use.

[ fig 5 ]
Biomimicry takes inspiration from nature
and applies it to design challenges. The mora product looks and functions like the natur
world, the more likely we are to understandand use it.
Air quality
The chairs emissions are tested by placing it in a large stainless
steel box. The contaminants in the air are measured before thechair goes in and after it comes out. We measure for a tremen-dous number of contaminants and then separate them intodifferent chemical classes, as well as individual compounds. Wereable to measure emissions off-gassing in parts per billion; onepart per billion is the equivalent of one penny to $100,000. Thetesting reveals very, very low-level emissions and ensures #19meets stringent indoor air quality standards.
Extendability
Another one of #19s important features is that its designedfor an extendable life. The frame and base are so strong anddependable, chairs can be rebuilt on them. In that sense, #19could be the last chair youre ever going to need. Its available intwo powder-coat colors. Powder-coating is essentially a non-emit-ting process that provides a solid, durable product.
As Allsteel develops new components and technologies, the chaircan be upgraded. This is extendable life. Its far more efficient touse a product for its original design function than to recycle itwhen you no longer need it.
Result
#19 is the culmination of the changes that have been happeningat Allsteel over the past few years. Its not just about the chair, itsabout the philosophy that went into it. It involves careful materialsselection, waste elimination, judicious design options, intendedcustomer use, future customer use, and end-of-life management, all at the same time.
This is the first time Allsteel has designed an entire product from theground up with an extendable life. And this is just the beginning.
[ right-sized ]
The Allsteel team wanted the production of
#19 to be as sustainable as the materials
used to build the chair. This led to the
creation of an inventive, U-shaped platform
for the chairs construction. No automated
belts are needed; assembly begins with the
casters and base, and the chair rolls around
the platform during production. Parts are
delivered to the assembly site using their ow
weight. In total, #19s production uses only110 volts of electricity to operate the work ce
Fewer resources in production mean the env
ronment is taxed less.
