Year 12 References and Exit Statements

Year 12 students’ references and exit statements will be available from the

College from lunchtime on Wednesday 28 November. Students who have

outstanding fees or library books will not be able to receive their reference or exit

statements until these matters are resolved.

Year 11 Exams and Leadership Week

In the last week of school after completion of their exams, Year 11 students will

take part in leadership activities, a significant part of which is the election of

College Leaders for 2019. The week culminates with the Year 11 Semi-Formal

being held at the Mackay Turf Club. Attendance at the semi-formal is conditional

on satisfactory attendance at all activities in Leadership Week. That is, students

will not be allowed to attend the Semi-Formal if they do not attend the activities

in Leadership Week.

Thank you for your support of the St Patrick’s College Christmas Fair on Saturday night. Your generosity

is very much appreciated and has helped make our fair a great community event.

Diocesan Assembly News

A number of common themes have emerged from the Regional Assemblies. The Diocesan Assembly

Taskforce is assisting Bishop Michael to identify those themes that are within the scope and purpose of

the Diocesan Assembly to be held from 27-29 March 2019. The members of the Taskforce are preparing

brief explanatory papers on these themes, including: the mission of the Church in this Diocese, how to engage those who

are marginalised, faith formation and renewal, leadership, governance and inclusion, preparation for the Sacraments of

Initiation, Eucharist and the Rites of Reconciliation.

Please keep these issues in your prayer and discuss them with staff, family and friends.

Reflection

As we celebrated the graduation of the Senior Class of 2018, we experienced mixed feelings; sadness as the young men and women leave us, and joy for the possibilities of their future. These young adults, have helped shape the spirit which is uniquely St Patrick’s.

Each year, students speak of the challenges which their final year of schooling has brought - the assignment preparation, the grappling with new concepts, the exams, the unknown future, but they also speak of the many joys of their final year.

We enjoyed the final celebrations last week and are thankful for the opportunity to bid these fine young people farewell. I speak for all staff at St Patrick’s College when I say that we have faith in our Year 12 students, that after many years of Catholic Education, they too, have a belief in God, the goodness of humanity and hope for the future.

SchoolTV – Mindfulness

Mindfulness and meditation is a Buddhist practice, but it isn’t limited to any spiritual practice. You will

see it in all spiritual traditions including Christianity and it has become increasingly popular in recent

years. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years in Buddhist traditions and it is fair to say,

that the mainstream practice of mindfulness stems from this Buddhist background. In December 2017

I had the opportunity to spend a night in a Buddhist temple on Mt Koya, Japan with my wife and son.

We were woken at 5:30am for an early morning service in the prayer temple. We were joined by one

other family and the four monks who conducted the hour-long service of prayer and meditation. The

prayer room was beautifully decorated and when the monks began to chan,t it was really quite amazing to witness the role

that meditation and mindfulness play in the life of a Buddhist monk. Despite the fact that the service was in Japanese, it truly

was a very holy experience and one I will never forget.

Over the last decade, mindfulness has been slowly rising in popularity with many individuals practising it on a regular basis.

Evidence based research has found that there are many benefits to mindfulness which has prompted schools across the nation

to implement this practice into their daily routines. Recent studies have revealed that 1 in 7 primary school students have

significant mental health disorders whilst 1 in 4 secondary school students, have psychological problems.

Mindfulness can be described as attention training for your brain, enabling you to focus on something without judgement and

to stimulate curiosity. Mindfulness can be practised in a number of ways and is something that can be done by everyone - no

matter what your age! It has been practised by many cultures around the world, but it is not exclusively affiliated to any

particular philosophy or religion.

Mindfulness helps improve memory, engagement and performance. Its positive effect on the brain can improve immunity,

mental wellbeing, learning ability, emotional health and even, time management. It is especially important in this era of

information overload, as our attention is constantly being pulled in many directions making us more distracted. Mindfulness

is all about building resilience and if we can build resilience in our students, we can equip them with the skills to deal with

many of life’s challenges.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents can learn the best way to introduce mindfulness to their children, implementing it into

their daily lives to have an overall positive impact on family relationships. We hope you take time to reflect on the information

offered in this month’s edition and we always welcome your feedback.

Year 11 Leadership Week During Retreat/QCS preparation Year 11 students were informed about Leadership Week 27–30

November 2018. A brief outline was detailed regarding what is happening during the week and

requirements regarding Semi-Formal.

Program:

Tuesday 27 November: Day 1 – The focus of this day will be centred on what makes a good

leader, leadership qualities, how you can be a leader and not a person with a position, and voting for leadership

positions. This process will further shortlist the people who will deliver a captain’s speech. There will be guest

speakers to inspire the students.

Wednesday 28 November: Day 2 – Students will be involved in small group work on committees, speeches for

captains and fun activities to foster community spirit.

Thursday 29 November: Day 3 – Orientation Day. There is a later start for Year 11 students who will arrive at

11:30am. A request for volunteers will be made to welcome the new students to St Patrick’s College. Students will

be listening to Committee Chair speeches and future planning.

Friday 30 November: Day 4 – Culminating event- Students will participate in a Paraliturgy. Following this there will

be a BBQ, concert and activities on the oval. Students will be able to depart earlier at 11:30am. The venue for the

Semi-Formal is at the Mackay Turf Club. The cost of the ticket will be $90. These tickets need to be purchased by

Thursday 15 November. The evening commences at 6:30pm and concludes at 10:30pm. A taxi will be phoned at the

parent’s expense if students are not collected by 11:00pm. The cost includes venue hire, buffet meal, DJ, table set

up and balloons. The College does not encourage or condone in any way the hosting of post Semi-Formal events.

FAILURE TO ATTEND LEADERSHIP WEEK MEANS THAT STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE SEMI-

FORMAL (exception – Workplace Traineeship or a medical certificate for illness). Please contact Mrs Brauer if

there are any issues regarding this matter.

All students need to check the sheet that they were given on Monday, by their home room teacher for

their current loans. If they did not receive a sheet, students should check with library staff urgently. All

loans should be returned as students finish with them before the last week of term. Any queries should

be directed to Library staff.

Borrowing for 2019 will be available in the final weeks of 2018 until

Thursday 6 December. Come early and beat the back to school rush in

January. The library will reopen for borrowing on Tuesday 22 January 2019 at 8:30 am.

Design competition

Recently our Senior Graphics students were given the opportunity to enter a design competition. They had

to design a modular fish habitat structure to attract fish and improve recreational fishing catches in

Kinchant Dam. The structures should attract fish, be easy to fish around and not be dangerous to boats or

water skiers.

Year 12 student Kirsty Edwards was the winner with her design! A visit to Kinchant Dam on Saturday the 1oth of November

was a great experience with these devices deployed to 36 locations around the dam. Mackay Mayor, Greg Williamson and

our local MLA, Julienne Gilbert were in attendance for this very special occasion as this is the first Barramundi impoundment

in Australia to have fish habitat structure introduced!

Thank you to the Mackay Regional Council, and in particular, Jonathon Dykyj, for the invitation to be a part of this ground

breaking collaboration as St Patrick’s College Construction and Engineering students helped construct many of these

structures. If anyone wishes to fish on these structures, please visit the Mackay Regional Council website for GPS locations!

Annual Cultural Showcase and Awards night

On Friday 2 November, we celebrated our annual Cultural Showcase. With rehearsals and sound checks

all through the day, the night kicked off with much excitement. The Hospitality students served the most

delicious food thanks to the guidance of their teacher, Ms Jodie Zahmel, whilst everyone enjoyed the

musical repertoire from our talented students. The Art exhibition in Rooms J3 and J4 was absolutely

stunning, thanks to Mr David Gravino and his talented Art students.

The first act started at 6:30pm and featured the percussion ensemble, stage band, handbells ensemble, handbell trio, film

viewings, choir, folk group, a solo act from Noah Hayes, the Dance Squad and the Year 11 Rock Pop Mine group. The

nominated speakers of each act were very composed and well-spoken, which allowed for a smooth transition between acts.

Thank you to all who participated in the Showcase either on stage, back stage, in the kitchen or the behind the scenes. You

helped make the night a success and everyone enjoyed your professionalism and input.

Act two began with a genuine and inspiring speech from Ms Kyra Geoghegan. A presentation of gifts were presented to the

staff and helpers of the Cultural Department for 2018. Finally, the student cultural awards were presented.

Cultural Encouragement awards were given to students of both Year 11 and 12 who have made a promising contribution to

the arts. They were:

Marita Bolic, Amber May, Angela Schatkowski, Murphee Foley, Gabrielle Perkins and Vince Vinzon

Cultural Excellence awards were given to students who are most deserving for their outstanding contribution to the arts. The

following students have shown dedicated involvement in various cultural areas:

Cultural Leadership awards were presented to each cultural group captain and school cultural captain. The following students were chosen at the start of this year to lead each respective ensemble as they showed maturity, responsibility and enthusiasm for the arts:

These students have led their ensembles through thick and thin, and have been excellent representatives of the school. The Senior Accompanist Award awarded to the most proficient accompanist in Year 12.

The winner of this award was Jack Kelly.

The Father Stephen Hanly Award for Encouragement in the Arts is for two students, most deserving of encouragement. These two students have represented the College through a number of cultural activities and overall, they show great promise.

This year, the Father Stephen Hanly Award went to: Zodie Bolic and Taylah Verri.

The Tony Druery Award for Encouragement in Visual Arts is awarded to a student, most deserving of encouragement. This student has shown great promise and potential in the field of Visual Arts.

This year, the Tony Druery Award went to: Kiralee Welsh

The Peter Scott Award for Cultural Student of the Year awarded to a Year 12 student who has shown support and promotion of the Arts in the College with an outstanding contribution to the Arts within the College. They have shown ongoing participation, support and promotion of the Arts across a range of cultural activities, whilst displaying a balance between their cultural and study commitments.

The recipient of the Peter Scott Award for Cultural Student of 2018 was Ethan McCarthy and Connor Shannon.

Sports Awards Night

On Friday 9 November the St Patrick’s Sports Awards evening was held at the St Patrick’s Hall. There were

100 people in attendance who enjoyed a wonderful meal with some fantastic company with sports awards

presented along the way. The night is a great way to thank and acknowledge all the hard working people

who have made a contribution to the St Patrick’s Sports Program over the past year.

The guest speaker for this year was Mitch Dunn, professional Rugby League Footballer. Thank you for your

time and effort Mitch and your inspirational talk to our guests and students.

I would like to congratulate and thank every student who has pulled on a St Patrick’s College jersey this year. Your

commitment to the College and your sporting endeavours is amazing and you have continued the high standard that has

been set for you by previous sportspeople of St Pats.

To all the hardworking coaches and managers – I cannot thank you enough for the time and commitment you have shown

throughout the year. Without you, the success of the St Patrick’s Sports Program would not be where it is today so THANK

Reef Guardians/Container deposit Scheme 2018

The St Pat’s Reef Guardians group celebrated another big year in 2018. The group was involved in several

projects, with the goal of reducing the College’s environmental footprint, both locally and globally. Some

of the project’s they undertook included excursions to the Mackay Materials Recovery Facility, a cleanup

at Mackay Harbour beach and the Great Northern Cleanup.

The group also encouraged students to use reusable lunch containers and

bottles via free popcorn and cordial days and to think globally, by

downloading apps that spread awareness of problems of the palm oil industry.

St Patrick’s College also introduced paper recycling in 2018, to go along with our bottle and can

recycling programmes. This was in large part due to the efforts of Mr Stephen Mortimer and

Mrs Rosemary Christensen.

We are also very proud to announce that St Patrick’s College is participating in the national container deposit scheme. If

students wish to bring their recyclable containers to the College, they will be added to the College’s containers, with funds

raised being contributed back to the College. Also, if students/parents wish to

drop off bags at any deposit points and they display our Scheme ID (can be

seen below). Again any funds raised will go directly to the College.

Whilst the 2018 Reef Guardians group largely comprised of Year 12s, several

Year 11 students joined later in the year and I hope this trend will continue

into 2019. I personally would like to thank all students who participated this

year and hope for a bigger and better 2019.
