The Caritas campaign began last week (on SHROVE TUESDAY) with pancakes being sold and will con nue with other fundraising events un l Easter. Each home class is raising money and awareness on ma ers of poverty and injus ce (www.caritas.org.au).

Project Compassion helps fight poverty and injus ces around the world. Our efforts can open doors to a brighter future. I thank you for your generous support.

SUCCESS AT SPORT

I wish to congratulate the students on their wonderful start to the Volleyball and AFL seasons. Last week the teams had good strong games performing at impressive levels, especially so early in the season. Well done girls, with special thanks to your coaches and supervising staff.

It is pleasing also to see so many students enjoying the Swimming, Running and Tennis opportuni es. I wish all involved every success as you seek to improve your skills, your fitness and your performance.

WELCOME DAY FOR PARENTS – an Open Day for Loreto Parents

We warmly welcome parents to visit the classrooms on Tuesday 26 February to see our teaching and learning ‘in ac on’. This is a unique opportunity for you, as a parent, to be part of “Loreto Learning” for a day. You are invited to join your daughter’s classes for all, or any part, of her day. Morning Tea will be served for all guests in the Home Economics room at 10.30am. This is always a highlight. I look forward to seeing you then. I hope you enjoy your visit.

WELCOME TO VISITING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

We warmly welcome to Loreto three students, from Immaculate Heart College, Kagoshima in Japan, who will be staying with us for the next four weeks. I thank their host families for welcoming them into our ”LORETO FAMILY” and for your par cular hospitality and kindness. Your support with this program is invaluable.

The interna onal student exchange program at Loreto is an important part of our mul cultural focus. It is lovely to have these deligh ul students with us, as we learn from them and they from us. The benefits from such exchange experiences are many. Next week we also look forward to the arrival of our visi ng French students.

FAREWELL & WELCOME

It is with mixed emo ons that this week we farewell one of our talented Laboratory Technicians, Ms Liz Booth, who has resigned in order that she might study teaching. We congratulate her on her enrolment at University and wish her every success in her studies. We thank her for her valued service given to Loreto and in par cular for her work with the Student Environment Council.

We welcome to the staff a new Groundsman, Mr Brendan Bartle and a new Tuckshop Assistant, Ms Sarina Pollicina. We trust their me with us will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

ctÜ~|Çz tÇw WÜ|ä|Çz TÜÉâÇw g{x VÉÄÄxzx TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà Last Wednesday Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts Studies Students took part in workshops conducted by Brisbane Artists Tony Rice and Wendy Winsley. Tony Rice shared his interest in the impact of plastic waste on sea creatures to work with Year 11 students as they created their own sculptures in response to this environmental issue. Year 12’s were assisted by Wendy Winsley to explore the use of gutta and dye to produce brilliantly coloured designs in silk painting. The Art Department is looking for ice-cream containers, large plastic containers with screw lids (plain flour, fruit container plastic etc.) and any lace, ribbon, material, or junk we can use in our Animal Sculpture Unit using mixed media. VtÜxxÜá axãá Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) 2013 UMAT is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The test is used specifically to assist with the selection of students into the medicine, dentistry and health science degree programs at undergraduate level at vari-ous universities. Registration for UMAT opens early April 2013 and closes at 5pm on 7 June 2013. UMAT will be sat on 31 July 2013 with the results being released late September 2013. PARKING AND DRIVING AROUND THE COLLEGE

Now that the school year is underway, it is mely to remind parents of the need to be watchful when driving around the College par cularly at peak mes in the morning and a ernoon. Addi onally, all parents are asked to ensure that you comply with the restricted parking arrangements that exist before and a er school. Unfortunately, a number of parents have been ignoring these restric ons and as a result are placing students at risk and imposing on our neighbours.

Wxutà|Çz axãá Last Sunday, approximately twenty Loreto students attended the Queensland Debating Union Summer School. This was an exceptional turn-out and the girls were a credit to their school. The first section of the day was a lecture format, with students given information relevant to their year level. After lunch the students were treated to an actual debate on the topical issue of performance enhancing drugs. I would like to thank the girls for giving up their time to attend the Summer School and I am confident that they all gained much from the day. As soon as the QDU draw is available, the debating teams and their coaches will be informed. All teams do have the first topic, however, and are advised to meet and discuss arguments both for and against the issue. John McKinlay - Debating Coordinator

“Loreto girls at the QDU Summer School”

WÜtÅt axãá Last Wednesday evening, 13 February, Year 11 and 12 Drama students attended a performance of “A Doll House” at the Brisbane Powerhouse Theatre. This was a professional and highly interesting presentation of the famous play by Henrik Ibsen. This show was a thought-provoking interpretation of Ibsen’s play which really engaged the audience. The girls are required to analyse the play for assessment. Kerry Williams - Drama Coordinator

`âá|v axãá Brass Ensemble Information – At the start of each year, all Year Eights are offered the chance to apply for a position in the Beginner Brass Ensemble. This group is designed to give students an opportunity to try ensemble music making for as low a cost as possible to parents. For students accepted into the group, all instruments are supplied by the school free of charge. Additionally, students offered places on Trombone, French Horn, Tuba or Euphonium will have Music Tuition Fees substantially subsidised. Over the past two days Mr Langford has spoken to all year 8 classes about this ensemble, and offered students the chance to apply to play Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba or Euphonium. If your daughter is keen to try music making in a band environment but has never before had the chance to do so, then this is an opportunity not to miss! Collect information forms from the Music Office and return the Application to the school by Tuesday 26 February for your chance to be involved! Classroom Music Excursion - On Wednesday 6 March, all students studying classroom Music from Years 9 - 12 will travel to QPAC to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in their annual Secondary Showcase Concert. This year’s concert is entitled “Musical Revolutionaries” and will include works about “significant uprisings or a revolutionary heroes, including Beethoven’s military tribute to the Duke of Wellington and Shostakovich’s sinister Tenth Symphony which is a portrait of the cruel Russian dictator Joseph Stalin”. The concert will also feature a performance by the winner of the 2013 Young Instrumentalist Competition. Music Tuition – Lessons on all instruments have now begun. Kim Devine and Catrina Capelli - Year 10 Parent Representatives lxtÜ DD fàâwç Éy exÄ|z|ÉÇ XåvâÜá|ÉÇ Year 11 Study of Religion students, as part of their semester unit, “Gender & Religion” visited the Chung Tian Buddhist Temple and the Griffith University Multi-faith Centre on Friday 15 February. At the Temple the staff gave in-depth explanations of all aspects of the temple complex and how the practice of Pure Land Buddhism contributes to the multiculturalism of our local area. The students discovered not only many exotic religious artefacts and practices, but also learnt how the temple is run entirely by Buddhist nuns under the direction of the Abbess.

At the Griffith University Multi-faith Centre, the students spent two hours with women from local Jewish and Islamic Commu-nities. All of the speakers were informative and gave the students particular insight into what it means to be a practising Muslim woman or Jewish woman in our community.

This direct contact is a rich and invaluable opportunity for learning. The students were able to relate to our speakers as women and this helped generate dialogue and engage their interest in what is quite different to what most have experi-enced. As Pope John 23rd said to the invited non-Christian delegates to the Second Vatican Council, we have much that we can learn from each other.

As well as help the students build their knowledge and understanding about the diverse nature of religion, this field trip will be invaluable in students completing an assessment task where they research women from non-Christian traditions later in the term. Dr Michael Downey

Results Round 1 - Junior AFL

Our Junior AFL team got off to a great start to the season by defeating Lourdes Hill 2 by 63 points. The final score: Loreto with 70 points (11 goals 4 points) defeated Lourdes Hill 2 with 7 points (1 goal 1 point). After a couple of minutes settling in Loreto scored the first goal. Throughout the first half Loreto continued to dominate play holding Lourdes Hill almost scoreless in the first half. During the second half Loreto continued to dominate and score regularly throughout the remainder of the game. It was pleasing to see all players adhered to the rules and respected both opposition players and coach. Well done girls! Next week we meet Lourdes Hill 1. We can expect a harder game. Girls are reminded that if they are travelling away from Loreto, they are to change into their playing uniform at lunchtime and report to the MWC at 3.05pm. If parents intend collecting their daughter from the ‘away’ or home ‘Churchie’ venue, a note must be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on match day. All buses aim to return to Loreto between 5.30-5.45pm, traffic dependent! We wish all teams the best of luck. Spectators are most welcome, we’d love to see you there! Open B The girls have started the season with a blast, winning their first game. Great support from all players. Exceptional serving from Olivia Mastry and good court covering by Claudia Miotti, with those dives. Keep up the wonderful work girls.

Junior A The junior A volleyball team had a strong 3-0 win against Mary MacKillop College. While the game was competitive throughout, Loreto deserved the win, playing strong three touch volleyball. Strong serving from Matilda Ruffin at the beginning of the second set allowed the team to run away with the match.

Junior B A great game of Volleyball for our Junior B team, defeating St. John Fisher 2 sets to 1. Isobelle Scott received two ace's and passed with confidence whilst Nikki Foley’s serves were amazing. Kassidy Graham was a super team player who communicated well with her team. It was a great game and all girls showed great sportsmanship.

Junior C - The Junior C team started off the volleyball season with a great win against Mt Alvernia. The girls showed great skills and shared plenty of encouragement from their team mates. Amanda Hansen showed outstanding performance in serving, along with her fellow team mate Sophie Hinchliffe. All players played exceptionally well on their first match. Congratulations!

Junior D Last Wednesday the Junior D Volleyball team had an outstanding first round victory over San Sisto College. It was a courageous team performance from the girls who won the first two sets in quick succession to seal the game. San Sisto hit back in the third set to finish the game at 2 sets to 1. Special mention to Zoe McNamee and Frances Wong.

Junior E This talented and spirited team was unluckily beaten, 2 sets to 1 in their first game representing Loreto. The team are already working the W formation while receiving serve. The second set was snatched by Loreto and the girls should be really proud of how they have come together so far! Maddison Ryan and Riley Adams played very well, and were particularly effective with their serving.

Junior F The Junior F team had an awesome start to the season winning their first game of volleyball against All Hallows’ 2 – 1. All players worked together and showed dedication, enthusiasm and spirit. Special mention must go to Ella Smyth and Emily Lowe for outstanding serving. Kirsty Gore – Volleyball Coordinator

Water polo Results U14’s - The girls played an superb game going against St Peter’s. The opposing team did not have enough players so three of our players played for their team. U15’s - The girls had a strong match against Mt St Michael’s with a great win. The team were short of players and several girls from U14’s stepped up to the challenge. Congratulations to Julia Logan for doing an excellent job in goals. Coach – James Duffy

U18’s - The girls had a very tight game this week, scoring 5 all against BGGS. Everyone played well together and kept up a great defence. The girls have displayed a vast improvement and playing well as a team. Keep up the fine effort girls. Coach – Mikaela Brogan

BSGSA TENNIS COMPETITION

The tennis competition begins this weekend. All players MUST check where they are playing this week. The Junior teams (Year 8 and 9) will have their home games at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Gregory Terrace, SPRING HILL. The Year 8 and 9 players MUST start their warm up at 7.30am and start the games at 8.00am. Most games are finished by 12.00pm if not earlier. All players MUST provide a healthy morning or afternoon tea when they have a home match. The A, B1/2, will commence their warm up at 12.00pm and games begin at 12.30pm. The B and C teams will start their warm up at 12.30pm and begin games at 1.00pm. Unfortunately the A, B and C teams that play All Hallows’ School and Mt Alvernia will need to commence games at 10.00am due to restricted use of facilities. All teams have started training this week. ST PETER’S LUTHERAN COLLEGE SWIM MEET On Friday 1 March our swimming team will be competing at the St Peter’s Lutheran College Swim Meet. Our team have the opportunity to do time trials and improve their times in the 50m pool. A bus has been arranged to transport the girls to St Peter’s Lutheran College (66 Harts Rd, Indooroopilly) directly after school finishes. The warm up is at 4.30pm and the meet will start at 5.00pm. The finish time is approximately 6.30pm. Parents/guardians are required to collect their daughter after the meet at St Peters Lutheran College. The Executive, with the help of the Board, have organised a Social/get-to-know-you afternoon this Friday (22nd Feb) from 3.30 to 5.00pm. It should be a fun afternoon with games and prizes. There will be afternoon tea on arrival and pizza and drinks will be provided to finish the social afternoon. Permission letters are available at the office or from members of the Executive. We are also about to begin our Easter egg collection for delivery with our local Meals on Wheels. Last Friday 15 February, Mr John Holroyd and Fr Peter Wieneke brought Villanova students, to Loreto, to participate in a Justice Café with students in the senior school. As part of our Loreto focus on Justice for 2013, the students reflected on Scripture and what it has to say about Biblical Justice then explored together how they could cooperatively engage in Social Justice action. The enthusiasm generated by the students has motivated them to continue to work together to raise awareness of the imperative for Justice, from everyday relationships to engaging in larger projects. Mary Ward said that she often meditated on the meaning of Justice so it is fitting that Loreto students reflect on Scriptures to discern how to do justice where they can.

_tÇzâtzxá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá FRENCH Next Monday, a group of 17 French exchange students will visit Loreto College Coorparoo from our sister school, St Joseph de Tivoli in Bordeaux. Girls who are hosting these French students received lots of practical information about their visit last Monday. The French group will arrive from Sydney on flight QF528 (Qantas) at 13:35 on Sunday 24 February at Brisbane domestic airport. Families are asked to meet at the arrival gate for this flight at 13:25 on Sunday. Girls are reminded to see Miss Stewart or Miss Tilly before leaving the airport with their French host brother/sister. The girls also received a copy of the French students’ timetable for their two week stay in Brisbane. Thank you to all the families involved in hosting our international guests and all the teachers who have organised activities and excursions for them. Tomorrow 20 February, French Day will be held at Loreto College Coorparoo. All Year 8 girls and French students in Years 9-12 are encouraged to wear red, white and blue accessories to celebrate. Please bring these accessories to school and put them on when you arrive. There is no charge for this. French cakes, éclairs, croissants and pains au chocolat will be sold at morning tea and there will be a design a dress competition at lunch time. French students in Years 11 and 12 are reminded that our dinner at La Provence restaurant begins at 7:00pm and will conclude by 9:00pm.

GERMAN Families of students who are hosting and travelling for the German Exchange Program are reminded that a meeting will take place on Tuesday 26 February at 7:00pm in room 402. Parents should have received a letter about this and the reply slip should have been returned to the Office by now.

JAPANESE Last week we welcomed three Japanese exchange students from Immaculate Heart College, Kagoshima to Loreto College Coorparoo. These girls are Kanako Kodama, Yukito Fukunaga and Natsumi Kubota. During their stay in Bris-bane the Japanese exchange students will assist with Japanese classes and visit various places of interest in the Brisbane region. Thank you to the Dalton, Lecatsas and Kelly families who are hosting Kanako, Yukito and Natsumi respectively. We are sure that the exchange will provide many happy memories for all involved.
