By Emily ElliottThe Army is an exciting prospect

for Laura Goldsworthy, who has just been selected for officer training next year.

Last week, the recently graduated Marlborough Girls’ College student found out that she is one of 60 ac-cepted into the New Zealand Army, out of 6000 applicants.

“It’s exciting. I’ve always wanted to do it. My granddad was in the military, so I grew up hearing stories and reading books.”

The teenager will begin her full year

of training on January 7, working from 5:30am-10pm every day, with one weekend off per month.

The training starts off as mainly physical, with two university papers.

“There is the possibility of going to Australia or Malaysia for some exercises,” Laura said.

“Everyone works towards going on deployment, it’s an exciting thing where you get to learn so much,” she said about the possibility of serving in Afghanistan or Timor Leste.

There are two other females in New Zealand selected with her intake, but

Laura says she is definitely in the younger group.

“My family are really proud, it’s the same thing my Granddad did.”

The Blenheim girl is ecstatic about starting training, and when others hear about what she wants to do, they are often surprised.

“People look at me like, ‘really?’, because I’m quite small and petite!”

At the moment, Laura is working hard to get ready for next year.

“All I do now is eat, train, and sleep!“You have to be really fit for next

year.”

By Chris Tobin A board of inquiry’s draft report

and decision regarding NZ King Salmon’s salmon farm proposals for the Marlborough Sounds is expected to be released this week.

NZ King Salmon’s chief executive Grant Rosewarne commented in a letter to the Sun last Friday that the decision would be made public today.

However the Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) communications manager Lesley Meadows said this had not been confirmed.

“Everyone is going all out to make it available this week,” she said.

The board has considered King Salmon’s proposal for two plan changes to the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan. Also it has looked at the company’s resource consent applications for salmon farms and salmon farming at nine locations in the Sounds.

Eight are new sites – in Pelorus Sound (four sites). Port Gore (one), Queen Charlotte Sound (two) and Tory Channel (one).

The board’s draft decision will be posted on the website once it has been released and will be open for comments from parties after which the board of inquiry will make its final report and decision.

A new joint tour ism v e n t u r e b e t w e e n Marlborough Travel and New Zealand King Salmon aims to celebrate some of the region’s most renowned sights and tastes.

The Seafood Odyssea Cruise which takes attendees through the Marlborough Sounds celebrated its maiden voyage yesterday.

The three-hour cruise starts with a visit to a New Zealand King Salmon farm where guests can witness life on a salmon farm, and from the new year, hand feed the salmon.

Following that, the cruise ventures into Tory channel to visit the oyster farms with attendees able to sampling fresh produce from each.

“While we receive no direct commercial benefit from the cruises themselves we are committed to

sustainable growth for the region and we regard this as being broader than producing only salmon,” said New Zealand King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne.

“We also believe food tourism is an untapped resource for Marlborough and the Odyssea programme is designed to add a new dimension to what is a very popular tourist activity in Europe and globally of course,” he said.

Daily departures from Picton Marina in Queen Charlotte Sound introduce guests to local producers, to sample the fresh catch and match it with Marlborough’s finest Sauvignon Blanc.

By Chris Tobin Workers were applying the finishing

touches to Davidson Place in central Blenheim yesterday in readiness for its official opening tomorrow afternoon.

The $477,332 pocket park on the corner of Charles and Queen streets will be opened at 4pm by Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman and former mayor Liz Davidson, after whom it has been named, will speak.

“It will be very informal,” Marlborough Distr ict Council

spokesperson Karen Fisher said. The Farmers’ market will be open

for business on the site also. The park is the first step of a major

upgrade of the CBD which will be completed over the next 10 to 15 years as part of the town’s urban design strategy.

The park has been designed to link through to the Forum area allowing a connected area for street markets and as a venue for downtown events and entertainment.

Davidson Place opens tomorrow

Still a bit to do: Workmen were busy yesterday at the new Davidson Place pocket park in central Blenheim which will be officially opened tomorrow.

By Emily ElliottThe annual Christmas in the Park was

a success on Sunday night, drawing the largest crowd yet.

According to chairman of the orga n ising com m it tee, Den is Humphries, approximately three and a half thousand turned up to listen to local talent at Pollard Park.

“The event was bigger than last year, it’s growing all the time.”

“We went through 700 sausages!” Mr Humphries said.

Mr Humphries said the night was festive, fun, and just like one big party.

“There is incredible talent in

Marlborough,” he said of Fella Voce, Olivia Sheat, and feature act Matt McNeily, who entertained the crowd.

“We sang about 8-9 Christmas Carols throughout the night.”

The event was made possible with the support of the local community and the council.

“We are very grateful to the community. The generosity is a major plus for

making Christmas in the Park work,” Mr Humphries said.

The organising committee of five are pleased with the outcome of the event, and are starting to work on next year’s Christmas in the Park in February.

Christmas in the Park brings festivity

For the last few weeks the foyer and front window of the Sun’s office has been awash with toys. But not now.

On Monday, two of Santa’s help-ers, Christine Campbell and Liz Fur-ness of the Open Home Foundation, visited the office to collect the toys which have been donated by people from around Marlborough.

The toys are part of the annual collection for the foundation and

will go to 70 families, most of them to foster parents, who will give them to children in their care on Christmas day.

Christine said it was the biggest collection of toys they had received in recent years.

“We want to sincerely thank the public for their generosity.”

The toys will be sorted this week in readiness for Christmas Day.

By Robbie ParkesMonths of intensive training have come to

fruition as members of the RNZAF Base Woodbourne 12/03 Recruit Course graduated and were recongised by the Minister of Defence on Friday.

The Honourable Dr Jonathan Coleman was the reviewing officer for the ceremony at Base Woodbourne, and offered the 41 graduates some key words of encouragement.

“You are joining the airforce at a very important time,” he told the audience of graduates, and their friends and families.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the RNZAF, “And that is a very proud history for our airforce to look back on,” said Dr Coleman.

“It is a great day for you as graduates, and you will remember this day for the rest of your lives.

“With that honour today comes a responsibility to represent a tradition of all those who have come before.”

Of the 41 graduates, Scott Hutchison is the only Blenheim recruit, while Patrick Tafili-Reid, a Tasman Makos Under-20 squad member is the only other Top of the South graduate, hailing from Nelson.

Scott has been a member of the Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade for two years, and will be pursuing the same career path in the airforce.

He will be posted at Base Woodbourne for five

months training, and will go down to Linton for a three month basic firefighting course.

Asked if he has always considered going into the airforce Scott said: “Not really, I just knew a couple of people who were doing it and enjoyed it, and I thought it would be a pretty cool career.”

He said there are some great qualifications he can achieve through the RNZAF, and is eager to get a career started.

The 12/03 Recruit Course trophy recipients are as follow:

Lawson Cup and WOAF Coin: T.A Lewis.R.I Simpson Trophy: S.P Barron.Pat Goddard Memorial Trophy: C.K.J Ramage.Hawea Shield: M.J Grant.Chris Black Memorial Trophy and The Returned

A large oak tree had to be removed from a property on the corner of Max-well Road and Stephenson Street on Friday, after it was declared a danger the Marlborough District Council reports.

Arborists found a split in the tree’s trunk and, in order to minimise the risk of branches falling over the road or onto the next door property, some of its limbs were removed.

Further assessment of the tree’s future was intended but, with high wind gusts, the tree was showing so much movement that immediate removal was requested by the council.

Police and Marlborough Roads cor-doned off the area and nearby residences were evacuated while the tree was largely removed.

Aborists suggested that the tree had

been topped many years ago, which had weakened its structure and opened the trunk up to decay.

The tree, on both private and public land, is thought to be about 80 or more years old. It was not listed as a protected tree on the district council’s register although several neighbouring trees have been registered.

By Robbie ParkesIt may seem like a step

back in time, but the Brown family’s car and bike collection boasts some rare and unique vehicles.

The Marlborough Muscle Car and Bike Museum on Grove Rd opened this week, in-troducing a wide range of vehicles, including a stainless steel DeLorean DMC-12 (famously used in the Back to the future film trilogy) to the Blenheim public.

Museum manager Viv Brown, whose family owns the collection said it will be a great attrac-tion, especially for the district.

The DeLorean for in-stance, has never been on the road and has never been registered.

Viv thinks it may be the only brand new, un-driven one in the whole

world.“There were only

about 50 made in the first place.”

Some of the other spe-cial models is the two-door Ford 54’ Fairlane (“One of the only ones in the country,” accord-ing to Viv), and the 1932 Stutz Bearcat.

“Everytime we went out in it, there would be up to one hundred people staring at it.

“She’s a classic that one.”

But, it is Viv’s 1973 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray - his pride and joy - that takes the cake.

Viv said they are some of the fastest cars in the country, with a lot of them hitting the tarmac on a regular basis.

Viv’s son Terry races too, and his own car is exhibited at the mu-seum.

“Very early in the new year is when the builders come in and start work,”

he said.“ I t h a s go n e

thing right.”“It’ll be very nice

to see a builder down there with a hammer in his hand.”

“We’ll take it out to Ruapuna and places like that,” said Viv.

Viv lived and raced in Blenheim in the late 1950s, before moving down to Christchurch and testing the tracks at

Aranui and Ruapuna. “All the family have

raced out at Ruapuna.”He agreed the museum

is a testament to their family’s passion for mus-cle cars and racing, and he believes the Marlborough

public will thoroughly enjoy their collection.

“There’s some real classy cars.”

The museum is open seven days from 10am to 5pm with a special discount for seniors.

The proposal to shift the ferry terminals to Clifford Bay will be discussed tonight in Picton.

The Picton Business Group will hold a meeting for Picton and Marlborough Sounds business owners.

All business owners are welcome to attend, to learn about possible impacts

of the change. The meeting will take place at

Mercure Picton hotel in Waikawa Rd, at 6pm.

Someone from the Ministry of Transport, and some Marlborough District councillors have been invited to attend the meeting.

Staff and students from Koromiko School made the most of their final day of school on Friday after it was announced earlier that the school would close, after 139 years.

There was cake, a bouncy castle and plenty of games for the send off.

The last day of teaching was officially Friday, December 14, while the school itself closes on January 27.

Continued from page 1“Our emphasis will be on being out there, and

being seen.”With a predicted 30,000 more people on Tasman

roads this summer, including West Coast roads, Inspector Richardson said the aim of the zero-tolerance campaign is to get everyone to their holiday destination safely.

“It’s not really a time for police to be taking leave, it’s all hands at the pump really.”

She said people must remember to wear their seat-belts at all times, and drivers who are towing should pull over when possible to let faster traffic pass.

Close monitoring of rural roads will be another part of the Crossroads campaign.

“It’s a focus for us for this year, we want to stop more people.”

Sergeant Barrie Greenall, Highway Patrol, said rural drivers need to think of everyone’s safety when they get behind the wheel after having alcohol.

“The big fear for people in rural areas is getting caught, not the fact they might kill each other.”

He said monitoring urban areas for drink driving has been well attended by police, but there needs to be more work done in rural areas.

Drivers are sixteen times more likely to crash with 80 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath in their system.

Sergeant Greenall said communities need to work together to stop people driving drunk.

“There are families around here who haven’t got loved ones this Christmas.”

There have been five deaths on Marlborough’s roads this year, involving four crashes, two of which have been alcohol-related.

“It’s just annoying that we have this situation.”

The cost of speeding:1-10km over the posted speed limit - $30 fine.11-15km over the posted speed limit - $80 fine.16-20km over the posted speed limit - $120 fine. 40 km over the posted speed limit will mean a

$510 fine and an immediate suspension of driver licence for 28 days.

By Chris Tobin Not many New Zealand survivors

of the historic World War II Battle of the River Plate are left but Blenheim has one.

He’s Harold Heffer and last Thursday the 96-year-old attended the 73rd anniversary of the battle at a special function organised

by the Royal New Zealand Naval Association (Marlborough branch) at Marlborough Clubs.

Mr Heffer, enjoyed a tot of rum in the traditional Up Spirits ceremony yesterday which preceded a dinner.

Naval association president Barry Rolton said only four other New Zealanders who served on HMS

Achilles at The Battle of the River Plate off the coast of Uruguay and Argentina, on December 13, 1939, were still alive.

The battle was the first major naval battle of WWII.

Mr Heffer served in the navy from 1936 to 1948 and was a leading stoker on HMS Achilles.

Historic naval battle recalled

The 82-minute battle between the pocket battleship Graf Spee and three smaller British opponents – Achilles, Ajax and Exeter – in the South Atlantic in 1939 ended with all four ships damaged.

The British ships suffered 72 fatalities (among them two New Zealanders) to the Graf

Spee’s 36. But the German

warship’s subsequent withdrawal to the neutral Uruguayan port of Montevideo, and it s d ra mat ic scuttling by its own crew on December 17, 1939, turned the Battle of the River Plate into a major British victory – and a welcome morale boost for the Allied

cause.Achilles’ role in the

battle was a special source of pride for New Zealanders, who

welcomed the ship’s crew home at huge parades in Auckland and Wellington in early 1940.

Tot of rum. Battle of the River Plate veteran Harry Heffer enjoys an 'Up Spirit" tot of rum. From left Mr Heffer's daughter Lois Freeth, husband Don Freeth and Royal NZ Naval Association president (Marlbrough branch) Barry Roulton.

By Chris Tobin Some of Marlborough’s

up and coming youth were encouraged to set career goals on Friday.

Speaking at the Marlbrough Lines Tertiary Study Awards, the company’s managing director Ken Forrest said that since the awards were inaugurated, in excess of 200 Marlborough youth had been recipients.

“And they’ve excelled nationally and internationally,” Mr Forrest said.

“I have every confidence you people will similarly succeed and I urge you to think of the goals you seek.”

The awards date back to the the mid-1980s when the then Marlborough Electric Power Board started them at the suggestion of the late Lawrie Duckworth, a former deputy mayor of Blenheim who passed away in September this year.

On Friday seven students were presented with the awards which were worth $18,500 and will assist with their studies.

The 2012 recipients were.- Leatham Landon-Lane,

Marlborough Boys’ College, dux (will be studying for a Bachelor of Engineering at Canterbury University); Christopher Swan, MBC, proxime accessit (Degree in Design, Massey University); R e b e c c a F o r g e s s o n , Marlborough Girls’ College, dux (Bachelor of Engineering ( H o n s ) , C a n t e r b u r y University); Sonia Ginders, MGC, proxime accessit (BA

Dear Ed, I have to agree with Craig over

the mess the Taylor River is (Sun, December 14).

The dumb council spends heaps of taxpayers’ money on making the river banks nice and tidy then hello they bugger up the river.

Back in the 60s-70 we caught a hell of a lot of trout there between the railway bridge and the gym club.

Daryl Slade caught a 15lb trout there. Malcolm Gilmour caught a

10 and an 8lber within 30mins of each other.

There are many stories like that and most of the trout were caught in the middle of the day.

Nowadays the trout are still there somewhere in the murkie shallows.

Come on council what are you doing to the river?

It sure is a good look for people when they decide to have a rest on the banks and see that dirty water.

Dear Ed,While I was getting fish and chips at a takeaway shop

on Wednesday night, an overseas lady walked in and ordered some too.

As she didn’t have enough cash she asked if they accepted a credit card.

Her bill was $30.00, give or take a few cents. The answer was yes, but there was a $2.00 charge

for this. To me it seemed a bit of a rip off especially with

someone from overseas, but they probably do this with everyone. Just seems totally unfair.

Dear Ed Has this government gone insane? I see where a German property investor has bought

part of New Zealand’s parliamentary complex.Hamburg-based Farhad Vladi has bought Bowen

House, the building on the corner of Lambton Quay where NZ First, the Greens and the Maori Party have their offices, for $62 million.

The 22-storey block, which is linked to the Beehive by an underground travelator, also houses the Speaker’s apartment, select committee rooms, the Office of the Clerk, Parliamentary Service and Ministerial Services staff.

Under a deal signed yesterday, Vladi bought the building from AMP Capital.

The only one to speak up against it was NZ First leader Winston Peters who said “It’s incredible that we can be so stupid.”

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei was unconcerned by the change of ownership, saying it had been in private hands for years.

How stupid. And a spokeswoman for Labour leader David

Shearer said he was not particularly concerned. “Our concern is selling land to foreigners.”

PM Key would not comment!Don Coyote

Selling to foreigners

Dear Ed,I read your article (Friday, De-

cember 14) on a local trout angler’s concern about the state of the Taylor River - once a clear, clean flowing stream.

At the junction of the Taylor River and Doctor’s Creek, the latter is cloudy now despite days and days of sunny, rainless weather.

Downstream through town, the Taylor is murky.

The discolouration was raised prob-ably last year and was then fobbed off

and denied by the mayor and deputy mayor.

Perhaps both could walk upstream and locate the discolouration’s source?

If not get the staff out.It seems to me the Marlborough

District Council picks on farmers re state of Marlborough’s rivers but the river through town and the local Wairau due to part treated sewage are far from clean.

Clean and green, 100% pure? Yeah right!

Who’d be a referee? Listening to Kelvin Deaker

reminisce of his career, you realise it takes more than a small amount of internal fortitude: The loneliest man on the field; the man whose decisions are analysed, pored over, commented upon, oftentimes rubbished in bars and homes all over the country, even the world; the man who is picked apart through video analysis by coaches and players to ascertain his strengths and weaknesses.

Who needs this? And then there are the on-field pressures of dealing with the team, with players jabbering in your ears, if you allow them that is.

Deaker (he’s not related to broadcaster Murray Deaker) says every match he refereed was a learning experience but a Super rugby encounter he did between the Brumbies and Sharks was bigger than others, courtesy of Wallaby great, George Gregan.

“The first time I refereed the Brumbies and Sharks I don’t think I blew the whistle unless he (Gregan) told me.

He had the cheek to say at the end that I had a good game.

“The next time I had Gregan I had it out with him in the changing room.

“I said actually I’d like to referee the game.

“After that he let me referee; he

was quiet. “Players take you for a ride as long

as you let them. “If you explain the situation to

them they’re accepting, if not, they’ll continue it.”

Deaker concedes that part of the role of a captain is to ‘ride the referee’; they had to be proactive and keep their team on the front foot.

Gregan and South Africa’s John Smit were of this type which according to Deaker, the All Blacks have lacked since the time of Sean Fitzpatrick.

“McCaw might be getting into it now – good captains chat to a referee all the time, a lot of it in the down time when the referee is collecting his thoughts.”

Deaker says reaching the pinnacle of refereeing as he did in 2001 when he became a professional was “like making the All Blacks.”

Like any Kiwi boy, becoming an All Black had been an aspiration for the former Southland Boys’ High School first XV mid-field back until cut down by a massive knee injury in his early 20s.

He was attending Lincoln College near Christchurch at that time.

From coaching he moved into refereeing, and progressed rapidly.

In explaining the qualities required for top level refereeing, he said while

fitness and knowing the laws were important, in order to advance other factors were needed such as being confident, having a presence and being heard out on the field.

“It’s all about handling the pressures.

“The biggest thing for a referee is to be confident.

“You can be really good but then you come up against older guys who are more experienced and bigger crowds and it’s how you handle that.”

It’s over four years now since Deaker hung up his whistle after eight years as a professional, and settled into a new job in Marlborough with his wife and young family.

That first job was with a wine bottling company and he has since moved onto Marlborough Lines where he is chief financial officer, a job he enjoys.

“It’s a great business, well established and Marlborough can be proud of the quality of power supply within the region.

“It covers all the Sounds and has gone through massive changes supplying to irrigation pumps and wineries.”

He seems not to miss the constant travel and scrutiny of being a top referee and is content with concentrating on his family life with wife Meghan, children Jessica, 14, Matthew, 12, as well as his career.

While cycling is his main relaxation these days, he does not discount the possibility of a return to refereeing.

“I’d like to re-incarnate myself and come back up the grades.

“When I started in Christchurch I had a network of international referees who passed on their knowledge.

“I should be doing that too.”

Professional rugby: Money over-powers everything but without it you’re hopeless.

NZ rugby: New Zealanders will have to retain their passion for rugby or we’ll end up a feeder to UK clubs.

We don’t have enough money to keep everyone in the game here.

Video replays: We’re over analys-ing everything.

We have 25-30 cameras at a test match.

We should just cut replays out.

Analysis has led to the end of any personality or individual flair.

Referees today: They’re too far from the ball prejudicing decisions at the tackle rather than getting in there.

Rules: It’s difficult for lawmakers to find a balance.

Career highlights: Standing in front of packed out crowds at Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium, and other major grounds of France and South Africa before test matches.

By Chris Tobin Problems with the theft of mobility

parking scheme permits has prompted CCS Disability Action to revamp them.

“Newly issued permits have been launched which will mean parking wardens can scan them to check whether they have been stolen or not,” Don Martin spokesperson for CCS Disability Action said from Wellington

The existing permits’ design have been in place since the 1970s and Mr Martin said they were in need of an upgrade.

CCS Disability Action chairman David Matthews said people had been abusing the system.

“Our branches receive a number of calls from concerned community members reporting abuse.

“While we administer the service, local councils provide and monitor public parking spaces. This means that CCS Disability Action doesn’t have any power to enforce the rules for anyone illegally parked in a mobility park.”

People with an existing permit will be able to continue using it but changes would be introduced to new permits this month.

“If a member of the public sees

someone using a space that they believe they’re not entitled to, they should write the vehicle’s registration down and give the information to the relevant parking authority,” Mr Matthews said.

He said if the space was in a private carpark such as supermarket, people should contact the property owner.

If it was on-road parking, they could contact the Marlborough District Council.

There are more than 114,000 mobil-ity parking permit holders around the country.

By Annabelle LatzThey have been described as

masters of dub, reggae, soul and RnB, and Fat Freddys Drop will show Marlborough this talent when it performs as headline act for this summer’s seventh Classic Hits Winery Tour.

Keyboardist Iain Gordon said their third studio album Blackbird, due for release in February, brings together their collective life experi-ences and influences.

“An album is a collection of your inspirations, it is a mish-mash, a collective mix of what we are all playing.”

There is influences of electronic, African techno, and quiet tradi-tional styles.

“We play more, grow more, and hopefully that reflects in the art we create.”

“It is an extremely enjoyable thing to be doing together as a group.”

Many good feasts of whitebait fritters and tacos have seen them through hundreds of hours of playing.

They formed in 1999.“Every year it’s still fun, I look

forward to driving to the studio, and coming to play music.”

This year, Fat Freddys Drop played 19 sold-out shows and festivals in Europe in August, and spent time in Australia.

Iain said the endless avenues to explore in Europe means they could tour all year if they wanted to, but choose to limit their time abroad.

Wellington-based, the seven band members come from all over New Zealand, from Whangarei to Bluff.

“We are home boys, we love home and we have families, so we allocate a certain part of the year to touring.”

This year has seen an increase of radio play in France, and they received a great response at a music festival in Pula, Croatia.

“It was big and diverse. We are established in certain places, Europe is so enormous.”

Back on home soil, they can’t wait to be headlining the Classic Hits Winery Tour later this summer.

They will play 17 concerts in wineries around New Zealand, including Villa Maria Estate in Blenheim on Sunday February 24.

They will be joined by Anika Boh & Hollie, and a group called The Adults; a collaboration of Jon Toogood, Julia Deans and Shayne Carter.

“It’s exciting already. It will be the biggest New Zealand tour we have done.”

“We love to make people dance, that’s what we feed off - when people go crazy.”

Iain’s message to aspiring musi-cians is to play live as often as possible.

“There’s lots of ways to make music. But the key is working out how to play that live. That’s the buzz, playing live is the core, and that has stood us in good stead.”

The Sun is giving away two double passes to the event.

To enter the draw, please put your name and number on a piece of paper and drop it into the office, 72 High St.

Nelson Marlborough health pro-fessionals are being urged to remind parents that they need to provide a consistently safe sleeping environ-ment for their infant over the holiday period.

With Christmas typically a time when families are travelling or likely to indulge with alcohol or partying behaviour, the South Island Alliance Child Services team is stressing the importance of ensuring that such celebrations do not put children’s health at risk.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board paediatrician Dr Nick Baker explains: “When people are travelling for the holidays they still

need to make sure infants are safe where they sleep.

“While travelling, people may think that a couch, adult bed, make-shift bed or armchair are suitable places for their baby to sleep, but we know that these options put babies at a much higher risk of accidental suffocation.

Just as car seats are designed to meet the specific needs of babies, so must be their sleeping space.”

Unsafe sleep factors cause the most incidents of SUDI which is why parents need to plan to ensure their infant continues to have a safe sleeping environment wherever they plan to be.

The team that puts Excellence into Building Merry Christmas and a safe New Year from Colin & Jenny

Closed statutory holidays only

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year in Marlborough and, for most of us, it’s a chance to take a break and relax. We’re blessed to be living in one of the loveliest

parts of the world and I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy some rest and recreation during the weeks ahead.

As the year draws to a close it’s also a time to look back and see how we’ve coped with the challenges of what has been another tough year for many. I want to pay tribute to those who have contributed to our community in any way; through voluntary work, advice or donations. We are fortunate to be part of a community of immense generosity.

Like most of you, I will be spending the season with family and friends but let us remember those who may be alone, those who have no family and those who may be many miles from home. This is the time, above all others, to be generous with our hospitality.

A warm welcome to the many visitors arriving in Marlborough in the coming weeks; loved ones returning home and holidaymakers discovering our piece of paradise. Have a safe and enjoyable visit - there is no better place to spend summer than here in Marlborough!

I hope that as we look toward 2013 that the signs of our regional recovery will continue to build and that the new year fulfils all our hopes and expectations.

My wife Thelma and I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

The Blenheim Sun will publish twice weekly

starting on Friday March 9.

Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside see this

as an exciting time, to provide Marlborough

readers with a second edition as well as the

popular Wednesday paper.

Advertising support has continued to grow for

the Blenheim Sun over the last 12 months and

the demand from advertisers for a Friday paper

has been the driving force to go twice weekly.

Les says the encouragement and support from

major advertisers is just fantastic, particularly

in this economic climate.

However he believes the Marlborough public/

readers who have continued to support the Sun

paper is the main reason why it is so successful

for advertisers.

“We believe this move also shows our confi-

dence in the region,” says Les.

Last week the ABC Audit Bureau of NZ re-

leased its yearly newspaper circulation numbers.

“The Sun is now the number one circulated

newspaper in the region with 18701 copies,

this compared to the Marlborough Express

8077 ANC”

“The Express suffered another sizable de-

crease in circulation, similar to last year,” says

Les.“The new Friday Sun edition will be similar to

Wednesday, but with a few surprises,” he says.

Grout is a very porous material and is rarely sealed when new so it starts to absorb dirt and bacteria from day one. In no time it starts to looks dirty and unsightly, no matter how long you spend on your knees trying to scrub it clean. To make it worse, the wrong type of cleaners could cause more damage!

However, Marlburians can now forget endless, pointless scrubbing, as Blenheim locals Darryl and Cecilia Norman have just started up GroutPro (Marlborough) Ltd. They are part of a team of franchisees throughout New Zealand and Australia.

“GroutPro is the only business in New Zealand specialising in tile and grout restoration and we offer a cost effective solution to making your tiles and grout look brand new again” says Darryl and Cecilia. “It costs only a small proportion of the price to restore tiles than to replace them”.

“We are delighted to be able to offer the people of Marlborough this unique service. Our previous experience in the flooring industry combined with intensive GroutPro training has provided us with a good grounding with which to start our new venture.

One of the biggest drawcards for us was to be able to see what a huge difference our services can make to the appearance of tiled areas in a home.”

Their product range and services include a breathable, topical sealer called Colourseal, unique in New Zealand, which repels dirt, oils and water and will prevent your grout from restaining for up to 15 years. This is applied to grout lines after a deep and thorough clean with specialist products and equipment and offers a range of 89 different colours.

“It looks fantastic once it is applied, truly making your grout lines look like new again and as it repels dirt and oils – no more scrubbing!!!” If you are building a new home with tiled areas, Coloursealing the grout as part of the build finish is high recommended.

If you are selling your home and want to give all the tiled areas a like new appearance, give Darryl and Cecilia a call. Fabulous kitchens and bathrooms sell houses and the GroutProl process could increase the value of your home and help you clinch the deal!

The critically endangered orange-fronted parakeets are thriving at Maud Island in the Marlborough Sounds, a new study has found.

A base population of 11 has jumped to nearly 100 since the birds were moved to the predator-free sanctuary five years ago. However, there are still less than 1000 birds worldwide.

The study, by Dr Luis Ortiz-Catedral and Professor Dianne Brunton from Massey University’s Institute of Natural Sciences, investigated what happened after 11 captive-bred Malherbe’s parakeets (Cyanoramphus malherbi) or kakariki karaka were moved to Maud Island in 2007.

A native New Zealand bird, the orange-fronted parakeets are listed as critically endangered on Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 2004 it was estimated there were between 300 and 500 Malherbe’s parakeets left in the world.

In December 2005, captive-bred birds were moved to Chalky Island in Fiordland, and in 2007 transported to Maud Island began. Further populations were moved to Tuhua Island in December 2009 and Blumine Island in 2011 and this year.

With funding f rom the Department of Conservation,

Forest & Bird and the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, Dr Ortiz-Catedral surveyed the Maud Island birds. He used a simple methodology based on sightings and estimated their survival during the study period, known as “mark-resighting”.

Since March 2007, regular surveys were conducted on Maud Island to record juveniles hatched on site and others released on the island. Within two years, Dr Ortiz-Catedral estimates the population increased from 11 to a maximum of 97 birds, due to the high reproductive potential of the species, and the absence of introduced mammalian predators.

Orange-fronted parakeets remain one of the least known forest birds in New Zealand due to their rarity, and the ambiguity of their status as a separate species.

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz

Hairdressing looks like a successful option for Mikayla Charlton.

She was this year’s Student of the Year at Marlborough Community College, receiving the trophy at last Thursday’s end of year prize giving ceremony.

The 17 year-old decided part way through Year 11 at Marlborough Girls’ College last year that she wanted to pursue a career with a pair of scissors in her hands.

“I’ve always liked playing with hair,” she said.

It was her conscious decision from the beginning of the year to put her head down and work

hard.Mikayla said even when class

time was quiet, she would keep busy by helping her classmates.

“I would help people with their theory, and braiding.”

She thoroughly enjoyed her year at the college this year, achieving a Certificate in Hairdressing.

“It was good, it was laid-back, and the people are encouraging and helpful.”

This summer Mikayla will be getting experience at a hairdressing salon in Fairhall, and wants to start a hairdressing apprenticeship as soon as she can.

“My message to other students is to put your head down and just do your work.

Don’t muck around.”

By Darrell Bate The last few hours before

Friday’s ELF Supercup meeting at Eastern States Speedway proved to have a degree of uncertainty with it for Blenheim driver, Paddy North as his car neared assembly with only an hour or two to spare.

The rush to complete the Monaro Super Saloon ahead of round one of the Supercup paid dividends for North, collecting some vital points for the series.

The rebuilt Chevrolet power engine boasting increased horsepower assisted Paddy in collecting the win in heat one, making the wait for the power plant worthwhile.

As quick as fortune went his way, hopes were dashed in heat two with a puncture disabling the 46e machine forcing North to retire from the race.

Wit h a pole shu f f le determining starting positions for the 25 lap feature, North had to plan a strategy to work his way through the seven cars starting ahead of him and with

some opportunities arising managed to finish the feature in third behind the Nelson duo, Ian Burson and Shane Carey earning valuable points ahead of the second round hosted by Nelson on Saturday.

A ninth spot in heat one and a win in the second placed North in good shape for the Saturday feature again starting third and holding the spot through to the end as Christchurch’s Mark Osbourne battled Burson for first place, Osbourne taking the flag by a nose.

Not so for tunate was defending champion Josh Boulton, badly damaging his new Corvette in a collision in heat one after spinning out and being struck by another competitor in Blenheim ending his weekend.

The next round of the series will be hosted by Riverside Raceway in Invercargill on Friday January 25, 2013, followed by the South Island Super Saloon Championship on the Saturday evening.
