Turin, 1971An architect and engineer, Carlo Ratti practices in Italy and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he directs the SENSEable City Lab. He has co-authored over 200 publications and holds several patents. He is a regular contributor to the architecture magazine Domus and the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. He has written for the BBC, La Stampa, Scientific American and The New York Times. His work has been exhibited worldwide at venues such as the Venice Biennale, the Design Museum Barcelona, the Science Museum in London, GAFTA in San Francisco and MoMA in New York. In June 2007 the Italian Minister of Culture named Ratti as a member of the Italian Design Council. Ratti recently presented at TED 2011 and serves as a member of the World Economic Forum, Global Agenda Council for Urban Management. He is also a program director at the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow and curator of the 2012 BMW Guggenheim Pavilion in Berlin.

What is your definition of creativity? Creativity is what allows us to see what we had not seen before.

What is the ideal creative environment? It comes when I least expect it: sometimes listening to others, sometimes on my own, sometimes while traveling. You can’t switch the creative button on and off.

Who do you consider creative? I would choose among the people I know personally and I would list: Oliviero Toscani, Aaron Koblin, John Maeda, Alex Haw...

Torino, 1971 Architetto e ingegnere, Carlo Ratti lavora in Italia e insegna al Massachusetts Institute of Technology, dove dirige il SENSEable City Lab. È co-autore di oltre 200 pubblicazioni ed è autore di diversi brevetti. Collabora regolarmente con la rivista di architettura Domus e il quotidiano italiano Il Sole 24 Ore. Ha scritto per la BBC, La Stampa, Scientific American e per il New York Times. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in tutto il mondo: alla Biennale di Venezia, al Design Museum di Barcellona, al Science Museum di Londra, al GAFTA di San Francisco e al MoMA di New York. Nel giugno 2007 viene nominato membro del Consiglio Italiano del Design dal ministro italiano della Cultura. Carlo ha partecipato alle TED del 2011 ed è membro del World Economic Forum, Global Agenda Council for Urban Management.
