Introduction

In the course of the overall economic upswing, European construction industry is expected to grow in 2014, with favorable outlook towards 2016 where all sectors – housing, non-residential construction and civil engineering are expected to experience an expansion in volume. The challenges, however, are in cutting the use of energy and increasingly scarce raw materials.

Aligning Geospatial and BIM technologies and processes to the business goals improves collaboration, efficiency and performance in planning and design phase, during construction, in post-build savings and for ongoing operational management. But there still needs to be awareness and understanding of the differences

between geo-information and building information.

Geospatial Media and Communications brings to you a high level discussion forum, GeoBIM 2014 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands that aims to bring together experts from the Geospatial, AEC and Infrastructure industry across the region. It will focus on addressing challenges and opportunities of the Infrastructure sector in Europe.

The primary agenda of the forum is to provide a platform to understand/acknowledge the need for leveraging Geospatial+BIM (Building Information Modelling) technologies in plan, design, build and operate. The said technologies can help answer

‘how’ and ‘why’ the assets are, ‘where’ they are.

In addition, it will showcase solutions by who’s who of the industry that can help you gain more accurate, accessible, and actionable insight, which will help you throughout the execution and lifecycle of infrastructure projects.

AgendaPlenary 1:Value of BIM Policy to Construction Supply Chain This plenary will feature top-ranked policy-makers from the leading BIM adopters in Europe, sharing their insights on how BIM policy has affected the delivery of projects by contractors in their respective countries. The talk will also focus on the policy framework, implementation challenges, and resource management to overcoming legacy bottlenecks. Their successful adoption shall promote more BIM policy formulation in other European countries.

Plenary 2: Geospatial + BIM InteroperabilityStandards and interoperability is without a doubt a major bottleneck in construction industry. As it is crucial to use the same information system from the beginning of project planning to designing, it is more crucial that the same system is used by the contractors to ensure accurate as built and to the operators for maintenance phase. In this plenary, professional bodies responsible in creating and promoting open standards in construction industry shall address the audience on the progress and future work being carried out on this front. Technology providers of the leading construction software, too, shall add their insights on their interoperability strategy and its value to their business.

Panel Discussion: Bridging Demand-Supply Gap for Effective Project DeliveryAs more countries in Europe are starting to adopt BIM policy, there has been a recognized gap between the ‘demand’ of the government, in terms of project specifications; and the capability of the contractors in terms of technology ‘supply’. Information exchange between the two demand and supply sides are very crucial to ensure effective project planning and delivery. The panel shall facilitate dialogues between the government, contractors and technology providers addressing issues such as information delivery, technology awareness, capacity building and the best way to meet each other’s expectations. Such synergy could result in optimized project expenditure, better preparedness in facing global competition, meeting sustainability expectation, and maximized return on investment.

Build and Operate

Construction of infrastructure post the design stage brings about ‘ground’ challenges in the equation of the construction life cycle. Addressing of these issues through technology viz. construction grade surveying with the use of LiDAR, as-built mapping, construction scheduling and estimations, and asset management will be addressed by the experts in this session. Different construction and operational issues in civil and building sectors will also be addressed.

Plan and Design

The session will bring together professionals from Geospatial and AEC industry who will highlight the various trends and case studies supporting the use of technology in creation of master plans, visualizations, 3D analysis and simulations for developing a sustainable infrastructure from building to a city. Geospatial information management in construction industry will also be discussed from technological point of view, as well as human resources and capacity building point of view.
