By BOB FOX The New Zealand Defence Force is to shift its national Human Resources (HR) and Payroll operations to a refurbished Hazelwood’s Building on Main Street,. Upper Hutt. In a move that strengthens the 96-year link between Upper Hutt and Trentham Camp, 110 HR admin and payroll staff will be in place in the CBD, right in the centre of the five main banks, and within walking distance of supermarkets and inter-city transport. Upper Hutt building contractor Bill Peryer has already begun gutting the former department store that called itself the “best store under the sun” because of the large sun logo on the Main Street frontage. Defence has signed a six-year lease, announced Acting General Manager of Organisational Support, Peter Thomas, saying the move is designed to make Defence Force HR functions more streamlined and efficient and also strengthens the long standing relationship between the Upper Hutt community and the Defence Force. “This is a win for the Defence Force as we can provide staff with a good working environment that is close to public transport, as well as local shops and facilities such as the pool and library,” he says. “Historically Defence Force facilities and resources have been located inside a military base in a remote location. But here we are centralising our back-office functions and locating them closer to amenities, making it a more attractive workplace.” Mayor Wayne Guppy is in no doubt it is also a huge win for the city. “We are proud of our strong links with the Defence Force which dates back to World War I when Trentham Military Camp opened in October 1914. “Upper Hutt has a long and important association with Defence Force, and we’re obviously pleased that now military and civilian personnel will be working in the heart of our city centre.” “It’s a win too for local retailers.” With some of the best cafés in the Valley, the effects of an extra 220 feet walking the CBD will have immediate effects. “It also boosts our growing role as an alternate commercial location that provides quality working accommodation at a reasonable cost to taxpayers,” Mr Guppy said.. He acknowledged Council staff who have been working collaboratively with the developer behind the scenes. It’s exciting to see it come to fruition.” Trentham City Investments Ltd chair Colin Gibbs echoed the comment, and added ‘relief’ at the announcement which has been rumoured for some weeks. Asked whether this was a one- off deal, or was there potential for others, Mr Gibbs was non- commital. “We have the land, the buildings. Upper Hutt is a great living and working environment and we hope success here will show others what can be achieved.” The contrast between Main Street, Upper Hutt and downtown Wellington is believed to have significant financial benefits for the New Zealand Defence Force. Defence Force sources say it is impossible to quantify as the personnel involved have been drawn together into a new streamlined unit. Why I love Upper HuttPaul Patterson Principal Fergusson Intermediate

Fergusson Intermediate School’s Principal Paul Patterson is a true Upper Hutt son. Not only is he Fergusson’s current principal, but he was once a student there himself AND his very first teaching job was at Fergusson. Paul is Upper Hutt born and bred. He was raised in Trentham and attended Trentham School (before it had a pink fence), Fergusson Intermediate and Heretaunga College. He trained for teaching at Wellington College of Education and then in 1978 Paul started his teaching career at Fergusson Intermediate. After leaving Fergusson he taught out of town before returning as principal in 2004. He has been passionate about restoring the school to its former glory.During the intervening years he has lived in Mangaroa (a beautiful rural area right on the city’s doorstep) Heretaunga and Silverstream. Paul loves the peace and quiet and privacy of the bush and tree surrounded property in Silverstream he shares with wife Dianne (also a school

principal) and a geriatric cat.

Why I love Upper HuttPaul says: The hills, the river, the parks and the free parking go without saying but really it’s all about the people. Not just a place to live, a way of life! This phrase borrowed from local identity the late Selwyn Toogood’s promotion of Totara Park many years ago best sums up why I love Upper Hutt. There is a real sense of community identity, often based around the local school, the people are genuine and the facilities in the main are first class. Given that much of my career has been teaching in Upper Hutt I have worked with two and in a number of cases, three generations of the same family, which of course adds to the sense of community.

Favourite Place to ShopPaul says: My love of shopping is legendary! No week is complete without a stroll through the aisles of Pak ‘n Save.

Favourite Place to EatPaul says: Upper Hutt is blessed with many fine dining places. Nothing beats the home cooked Sunday roast but we’ve always enjoyed the

food and service at The Silver Spoon, and Silverstream’s Yum Yums Fish & Chips is great for a Friday night treat. The fish is wonderful and their home-made chips are the best around.

Favourite Place to take VisitorsPaul says: Trentham Memorial Park is a magnificent area situated as it is, right in the middle of suburbia and Trentham Racecourse is a much under-utilised facility which I would love to see developed into a real focal point of the area. Of course all future visitors will be taken to see Fergusson’s fantastic new classrooms of which we can all be justifiably proud.

Favourite thing to do with family/friendsWellington Cup Day is an annual highlight, a group of us having developed a tradition of gathering together for a day of picnicking and punting. The picnic is always successful. And of course every day with my friends at Fergusson Intermediate is an absolute delight!

Upper Hutt rescue team called back to help in ‘recovery’By BOB FOXNZRT9 is back on the ground in Christchurch, but now in recovery mode, says leader Chris Lapsley. It has been a nine-day deployment for the four members of Upper Hutt Community Rescue, officially NZ Rescue Team 9, who are due back home tomorrow (Saturday).“There have been no surprises, “Chris said. “This time we knew what to expect.“But it’s still a long day.”Having linked up again with the Lower Hutt team, NZRT9 has been supporting engineers as they painstakingly assess the state of houses. They look for the booby traps left in collapsing homes, their primary role the safety of the engineers.“These are yellow sticker houses; do they leave them as yellow, or are they upgraded to red? You never know what you’re going to find, and we’re an extra pair of eyes and ears on the ground,” Chris Lapsley said. “We keep them out of trouble.”With him are Denny McArthur and Paul Godfrey, the trio flown in by RNZAF Hercules to Christchurch where they were joined by Upper Hutt team member Vicky Blair, who had to fly in from Hamilton. They ‘travelled light’, with one bag for personals, a second

for operational and personal protection gear. There is now a good logistical setup on the ground, and any gear or machinery they need is quickly forthcoming. The team is just “happy to be achieving what we set out to do,” Chris Lapsley said. The quartet are grateful to family and employers just to be given the opportunity. They are all colunteers.“In my case,” Chris said, “I work for Aviation Security, and when they generously give me the time off, they have to fill my rosters.”In recovery mode, there have not been the dramatic rescues of fisrt time around.Possibly the mnost significant first time was going into a house that looked okay from the outside, but inside the chimneys had come through the roof, and there was the 80-year-old woman, sitting shaking on the couch. She was too afraid to move. Other experts were called in to take her into care. And there was the lighter side, like the very nice house in the very nice street in the very nice suburb that had to be checked for damage like all houses. No apparent problems, but check out the garage with the open door!Oh, a red Ferrari. With the keys still in the ignition. That one was also reported to police.

The Eddie Carson & Sons plant lines up on Aotea Quay wharf really for loading onto the HMNZS Canterbury. That’s about $50-60,000 of inter-is-land fares - normally. Thanks Navy.

No free rides on the trip south to Christchurch, with every space filled up by four pallet loads pf do-nated potato chips from Pak’nSave. Colin Hey (right) was in personal charge of the packing before head-ing to the boat.

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONFraser Crescent School’s 3rd annual sleepover last Friday was more poignant than usual, with students realising what it was like for Christchurch residents affected by recent earthquakes and hearing of the earthquake and tsunami which caused great loss and devastation in Japan, while they were at the sleepover.

The sleepovers started in 2009 during Fraser Crescent School’s explorer programme which focussed on preparing for an emergency with their Term 3 Unit “Don’t Panic Fraser!” which involved all student learning about what they needed to know and do in the event of a major Civil Defence Emergency. The unit concluded with a one-

night sleepover in the school grounds, which involved all staff and the majority of students and parents sleeping in tents on the school playing field.Another of the school’s goals was to provide students and in some cases their parents, with an opportunity to experience sleeping in a tent in a safe secure environment. While every year has had meaning - and been a lot of fun - 2011 was particularly meaningful as it gave students an appreciation of what life is like for many in Christchurch and Japan who have lost everything and are living in tents or shelters.“Over the last three years we have seen many of our students grow in confidence and move from not wanting to stay the night in 2009, to staying in a tent with their parents in 2010 and now in 2011 sleeping in a tent with their friends and telling their parents that they can stay at home!” says principal John Channer.“Fraser vision encourages our students and staff to be Future Focussed and we see this type of activity as a valuable learning experience which has a positive spin off as our students talk about and share their experiences.

Getting something soft to sleep on: Year 1 student Devlin Backhouse helps another Year 1, Briar Scott, with pumping up the airbeds.

Stage One of Upper Hutt College’s $20 million rebuild is nearly complete. On Monday, Rimutaka MP Chris Hipkins toured the site and was impressed with what he saw.Contractors were marking out the floor of the new main gym and were busy with the final fit out of the fitness centre and changing rooms.New fenced Astroturf all weather courts are well underway. While the formal opening for this stage of the re-development which sees the school almost

totally rebuilt, is within a few weeks of being ready for use, the formal opening is expected to be held in week 1 of term 2 (May). As well as the new fitness centre, the rebuild will include a new administration block, performing arts centre and 34 new classrooms. At left, Upper Hutt College deputy principal John Lee, executive officer Don Hancox and Rimutaka MP Chris Hipkins outside the school’s new main gym. Markings on the floor were just been put down for the painting of court lines.

By MARY-ANNE THOMSONInspired by the Jenny Joseph poem “Warning: When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple” that begins: “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple/with a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me,” American Sue Ellen Cooper bought herself a red hat…. When her friend turned 50, she bought one for her too. Soon it became Sue Ellen’s signature gift for friends as they turned 50, and in 2000, Sue Ellen and her friends started the Red Hat Society, for women over 50. Little did they know then it would become a worldwide phenomena, with local societies across the globe – including in Upper Hutt – celebrating Red Hat day on April 25.The Society’s only rule is no rules - it’s simply an organisation for women to have fun, support each other and find kindred spirits. “We like to think we have Hatittude,” says local president Kinsa Hays. The Upper Hutt Society was formed last year by Ms Hays as her response to a challenge in a course she was doing at the time, to “create a happening” in her community.New to Upper Hutt from Christchurch, she missed the camaraderie of the RedHatters there. Recognising there was a need for women aged 50 and over toget together and have fun, she made it her project. It’s been going well but the group would love to welcome new members. The local group “gathers” on the first Sunday of each month at Expressions for a coffee. “We don’t meet – that’s too serious. We gather,” Ms Hays says.“We plan how we want to have fun, put on our hats and purple clothes and do it with Hattitude!”As well as monthly coffee sessions they have had, hat-making sessions, a train ride, dined out in the Mayfair Café, had a members birthday afternoon tea at Wellington’s Hippopotamus Restaurant and toured Christmas lights together. “Meeting new people, making

friends and enjoying yourself is what it’s about. You can let your hair down if you want to. There’s no baking or fundraising,” Ms Hays says. There are now over 81,000 chapters worldwide. A queen heads each one, it’s Queen Kinsa here. “Hatquarters” is the USA, societies events vary according to the needs of members but one of the most common pastimes is attending or hosting tea parties or coffee sessions.Under 50’s can join. They wear a pink hat and lavender gear. “Pink Hatters are a wonderful part of the Red Hat Society,” Ms Hays says.“Not yet 50, Pink Hatters are welcomed into many RHS chapters. They follow all Queen guidelines (the only difference being their dress; lavender and pink until their REDuation) at fifty.Fun, friendship and frivolity - that’s us. “We meet the first Sunday of each month at Expressions cafe 1.30pm if you’d like to meet us. We’re easy to spot in our red head gear,” Ms Hays says.Anyone wanting more information can contact her on 526 8982 or 021 864 654.

“Should I be lighting my fire this winter, what if there is an earthquakes” is a question that heating professionals Tony’s Chimney Sweeps & Repairs and Fireworx are being asked repeatedly this month.

It’s at the back of everyone’s minds, but not lighting your fire because there might be a problem in an earthquake is like not crossing the road in case you get run over, according to Tony from Tony’s Chimney Sweeps.

“People should continue to

enjoy their fireplaces this winter,” he says.

“There are things you can do to minimise risk when crossing the road, like looking both ways and listening for traffic, and there are things you can do to minimise any risk associated with using a fire.

“The most important thing is to have the chimney or flue inspected by a professional. I recommend that everyone gets their fire checked before lighting it this winter. That way they can find out if there are any issues, then address them

and minimise risk,” he says.

All wood burners should be seismically restrained, according to Tony.

This means they are bolted down so in an earthquake if they move they shouldn’t tip face forward onto the floor and start a fire – Tony says restraining the wood burner, is the most important thing people should do if it isn’t already done. The other important thing is to make sure there aren’t any gaps in flues, corrosion of flues or other problems.

While stone chimneys can be tied back and this will help minimise the risk, Tony says that heavy tall chimneys should be lowered and owners should consider installing light stainless steel flues instead.

“Christchurch has proved that these tall heavy chimneys are going to come down. Owners should ask themselves, do I really need that chimney or can I have a stainless steel flue,” he says.

“It might be time to take it down instead of leaving it up to nature.

“Anything you can do to minimise damage is good,” he says.

Having all flues, chimneys, wood burners and fireplaces inspected every couple

of years and having a professional clean every few years is the key to minimising risk according to Rochelle from Fireworx.

Even if the owner is cleaning them they often can’t tell if there are any problems,” she says.

“Lots of people doing their own sweeping use a nylon brush. They can’t necessarily feel if there are any gaps or problems. The chimney or flue expands and contracts with heat and cooling and creosote can get trapped in the joins this build up can be missed by home cleaning and can cause chimney fires. Gaps can appear which can be unsafe and depending on what wood is used, flues can corrode.

“For peace of mind its good to get a professional to clean and look at it regularly,” she says.

“That’s what sorts the chimney sweeps from the chimney sweeps, Tony says.

There are people who simply sweep chimneys then there are others who give a good clean and inspect. They can then give professional advice about any problems that need addressing and any restraining issues.

“That’s where the importance of inspection comes in again,” Rochelle says. “We can give

advice on any repairs that can make the fireplace more efficient, maybe something as simple as some draught stop around a door to stop air whistling through, or adjusting the handle on the wood burner,” she says.

Tony and Rochelle also recommend for efficiency purposes that those with open fires and stone chimneys consider installing wood burners.

“We can also give advice on new fires and relative efficiencies,” Rochelle says.

Both Tony’s Chimney Sweeps and Fireworx promote the cosy warmth that can be enjoyed from having a fireplace. They agree that as long as people have their fireplaces checked regularly by professionals, they should light them and enjoy them this winter.

They also agree that the key to making the most of this warmth is having an efficient fireplace and burning bone-dry seasoned wood.

Burning dry seasoned wood means more heat, less creosote and less risk of chimney fires.

Firewood Unlimited sell dry seasoned firewood all year round. They guarantee that wood sold as dry will be dry. Firstly they dry it out on concrete in their yard, then, store it inside in their shed so that it will be dry all winter.

For customers who want to dry and season their own wood, they can buy from Firewood Unlimited at a lesser price.

“We welcome customers coming into our yard at 35-37 Montgomery Crescent and having a look at our operation,” says Bill. “They are welcome to inspect the wood before they order, so they can be sure that it’s well dried and seasoned.”

Firewood Unlimited specialise in providing just the right amount of wood for individual situations. They sell small light bags which can be easily picked up and popped into the back of a car – these offcourse are dry and seasoned before they are bagged. Bags are just $10 or three for $25.

They also have a ute with a tip tray which can deliver wood right into a carport or wood shed. “We find that elderly people or those who don’t use a fire regularly really like this service,” Bill says. “It means they don’t have to spend time relocating wood. We deliver dry wood right to their storage area.

“For those prefer a clean heat option,” heat pumps are ideal,” says Kim from Laser Electrical.

“As long as they are installed by a qualified person, heat pumps are energy efficient and offer instant heat,” she says.

“A lot of people are now using a combination of heat pumps and fireplaces because of the convenience of heat pumps.

“They don’t want to worry abut lugging in firewood when they are busy so they use a heat pump in those times and enjoy their fireplace when they have time – like at the weekend.

Laser Electrical stock all major brands of heat pumps and offer advice about which pump will be best for which home or work place.

“They can be really efficient when the right pump is installed, but if you have too small a pump for the space it will work all the time and cost more than the correct sized pump so it pays to get advice from a professional,” Kim says.

“Heat pumps are great as they usually come with timers so you can set them to come

on before you get up in the morning and just before you get home from work, so you don’t have to run them all day to ensure your house is warm when you get home.

“You also pay for the power as you go rather than having to pay up front for firewood, so for people on a limited budget that’s useful,” Kim says.

For a warm healthy home Laser Electrical also recommend good ventilation to ensure that there is no damp or mould. “We can give advice on ventilation too,” Kim says.

To get the most out of any form of heating, keep heating bills to a minimum and use heating as little as possible, it is widely accepted that insulation is critical.

“Covering the windows with good thermal backed drapes will keep warmth in and cold out and reduce the requirement for extra heating and its associated costs and risks,” says Dennis for The Curtain Store.

“Using good linings on the back as well as good fabrics on the front is important for protection of the fabric and good insulation,” he says.“Its also good to have drapes to the floor in many situations as that adds to the insulation properties,” he says. The Curtain Store services the entire Wellington region from its Upper Hutt Warehouse and store and has numerous ready-made window furnishings on display and in stock for those

who want to get something in place immediately now the weather has turned cooler.

They also stock curtain rods, accessories and fittings and much more to help customers pull a room together.

The Curtain Store carries products from upscale designers such as James Dunlop, Maurice Kain, Simonson Filigree, Ken Bimler, Charles Parsons, Irvines, Warwicks as well as traditional products, country, French or modern.

If there’s not something in the Curtain Store’s large selection of ready-made curtains, then they offer a design and make service – the starting point is dozens of coordinated fabric groups plus numerous trim choices - pick trim, lining, accents. The Curtain Store offers a free measure and quote service.

“Any form of floor covering, but in particular good quality wool carpet coupled with under floor insulation will help keep the home or workplace warmer,” says Tom from Fair Flooring.

“Nature has perfected wool to protect sheep from extremes of temperature. The crimp structure of wool traps millions of tiny pockets of air which create a barrier preventing heat loss,” He says.

“When it gets cooler, wool carpet provides natural insulation by reducing draughts and trapping warmth. In winter they prevent

cold and damp rising through the floor and in summer they prevent heat rising so the room will remain cooler and more comfortable,” he says.

“So wool carpet will cut down the need to use extra electrical or wood heating, reducing costs and minimizing the need to “light the fire” or turn on the heater. And it feels great to touch and walk on barefoot.

Tom also points out that wool is naturally resistant to burning. Wool carpets are used in aircraft and cruise ships because wool’s high protein and moisture content make it difficult to set alight. If ignited, wool only burns weakly, limiting the spread

of flame. Compared to synthetics, wool’s inherently low smoke emissions and low flame spread mean that it does not create such dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and other toxic fumes. Wool carpet self-extinguishes due to the upper pile forming a thick insulating char layer which inhibits fire. Wool does not melt which prevents the underlay contributing additional smoke, heat and toxic gases. If wool is exposed to high temperatures, it gives off a strong non-toxic odor. Flair Flooring can help with advice about which floor covering will be the most suitable to help with heating – and cooling – homes and work places.

When St Joseph’s School and Church in Upper Hutt celebrates its centenary over Queen’s Birthday weekend, Mary Richardson will be one of the many expected attendees. Having moved to Upper Hutt as a newlywed in 1947, Mary has been part of the fabric of the St Joseph’s family for over 60 years. Much about Upper Hutt has changed over this time; the landscape urbanised and the population increased. St Joseph’s too has grown with Upper Hutt; evolving into the vibrant, multi-cultural community it is today.“St Joseph’s is known for being a friendly, open and progressive parish I am proud to be part of,” says Mary. “There is representation for just about every group you could possibly want. The people are generous in many ways, sharing their skills and

learning from one another.”When they settled in Upper Hutt, Mary and her husband, Arthur, purchased a section in an area

affectionately known as “Vatican Square”, due to its previous landowners being the Catholic Church. The “Swiss Guards”

lived beyond the “Square”. Fittingly, many Catholic families moved into the area, becoming neighbours, friends and fellow parishioners. Mary has been active in the community in a many ways, including many years with the Catholic Women’s League. She fondly recalls the many working bees and fundraising events held by St Joseph’s, all of which provided a social outlet for the Catholic community. “There was a terrific amount of camaraderie in the early days and everyone looked after each other,” says Mary. She laughs as she recalls the time a local MP donated a sheep to raffle to raise funds for the Sisters. Mary’s contribution to the community has been acknowledged with a number of awards, including the impressive Queen’s Service Order that hangs on her wall. She hopes she is known in Upper Hutt as a Catholic woman.St Joseph’s School and Church will mark the occasion of its centenary over the long weekend of June 3-5 2011. Anyone interested in joining the celebrations can download a registration form at www.stjosephsuh.com. Alternatively, contact Christine by email s t josephsuh@actr ix .co.nz, phone 528 2028

All raffle tickets will be $5 and all monies collected will go to the people of ChristChurch.

Our aim is to see how well we come together as a community if we were to be in the same position and at the same time helping another community to rebuild their shattered lives.

We would really appreciate anything big or small. If you would like to hop on board and help organise please feel free to contact us at Configure Express ph 939 1563.

Monique Ballinger and Configure Express would like to organise as a community the biggest raffle in Upper Hutt. We thought by starting with the local retailers and businesses it could grow to include the community as a whole.

Rimutaka rugby is set to take a major run at achieving its long-term goal this season.

To make the premier division in the Wellington competition, they first need to make the top two in Senior First, then win their premier place by standout good performance in the promotion-relegation series at the end of the season for the Hardham Cup.

It has been so oh so close in the past

Early 2011 has been a bumper acquisition year and they go into their pre-season with hopes high.

As many as six Upper Hutt premier players have signed this season with Rimutaka, wing and top try

scorer Ofa Pongi, who played for the Wellington 7s earlier this year. He was Upper Hutt’s leading try-scorer last season.

Also changing clubs will be Clayton Masina, the wellington Maori rep, talented first five Claude Collier, prop Walter Treviranus, Lock Johnny Manaena, Nua Fono-Hunt and Martin Asiata. Throw in Marist St Pat’s premier player Kiki Stowers, and welcome back former Upper Hutt College player Dan Konise, who has been in Canterbury, and the Rimutaka confidence is easy to understand.

Spokesman Dustin Brattle said the club is getting good numbers at senior pre-season training, with over 50 turning out on two nights of the week.

“We’re strong enough that we’ve entered a new J8 (Junior eight) team, where the rugby is good by the training not quite so demanding.”

He believes it will be a much more balanced team this year.

Joker in the pack is likely to be Wanganui Heartland lock Aaron Kelly. Kelly has an incredible rugby CV already, with top honours in secondary school and age grade rugby, including both at the Hurricanes level.

He’s in Wellington to play under uncle Rangi Kelly, the forward coach of the senior first side.

Already, the big lock or blindside flanker has been called up to the North Island Maori team this season.

Rimutaka sets up for extra strong season‘s challenge

BNZ volunteers Madhu Mummadi, Ian Shannon, Abby Austin (from front to back) paint fences with donated paint at Trentham School last week. They were three of 10 BNZ staff who helped paint the school’s interior fences as part of the bank’s ‘Closed for Good’ initiative. What’s more, the paint was donated by Resene. “We are so lucky to have both the volunteer labour and the paint donated,” says principal Suzanne Su’a. “The fences were long over due for a paint,” she says.
