the first four months and cus-tomers have been respondingfavorably to not only theclothing offered but the af-fordable prices as well.

Christine Herman, storeowner, fills the store withclothing that she feels cus-tomers will feel comfortablewearing all of the time andalso has items made by artistsand craftspeople in the GreenBay area. Inventory changesfrom week to week to keepeverything fresh and new forcustomers.

With a background in mar-keting, Christine worked indifferent marketing positionsin the Green Bay and FoxCities area until her first childwas diagnosed with autism. Itwas at that time she left hercorporate job to stay homewith her son. While being astay at home Mom she real-ized that it was difficult tofind comfortable clothing thatwas still fashionable and yetdidn't have a brand nameplastered across the front.

After two years of operatingas a foster-based rescue, SafeHaven Humane Society andOutreach Center successfullysigned the lease on a newspace that will serve as a full-service animal shelter andcommunity pet pantry. Theorganization will operate outof 991 N. Military Avenue inHoward.

“The new space will help usfill gaps in service for home-less pets in our community,”said the group’s founderLeigh Ann Wagner Kroening.“Not only will we be able totake in more pets who needhelp finding their foreverfamilies, but now we alsohave a place for strugglingpet owners to come for assis-tance.”

The new building is not theonly big news for the organi-zation. The group also has de-cided to add a doing businessas (DBA) name and over thenext few months will fullytransition its operations toHaven Animal Rescue and

Community Outreach. Board President Jamie

Lotto said the new namemore accurately reflects theorganization’s work and setsit apart from other rescues inthe community.

“We’ve never really been ahumane society,” Lotto said.“Our slogan is ‘Not Your Or-dinary Shelter’ and HavenAnimal Rescue and Commu-nity Outreach is a name thatis more reflective of the res-cue work we do and the serv-ices we provide to people andpets in our own area.”

As if a new building andnew name aren’t enough tokeep the rescue busy, for thethird year in a row, the organ-ization also was selected toparticipate in the MichelsonFound Pets Saving AnimalsChallenge. The fundraisingcampaign is for animal shel-ters, rescue groups, andspay/neuter clinics fromaround the country that willcompete for $250,000 ingrants toward programs that

expand lifesaving capacity intheir communities. The cam-paign launched May 1st andruns through May 31st.

This year participating or-ganizations have been di-vided into two tiers broken upby operating budget. SinceSafe Haven Humane Societyis a grassroots organizationrun completely by volunteers,it is competing in Tier 2 withthe smaller organizations. The seven top teams in Tier 2at the end of the challengewill earn cash prizes from$2,000 to $25,000, and thereare an additional $35,000 inprizes for weekly bonus chal-lenges.

Wagner Kroening said allthe money raised during theSaving Pets Challenge will godirectly toward making thenew shelter space the perfecthome for the homeless pets inthe rescue’s care.

“Since our organization iscompletely run by volunteers,we don’t have to spend ourprecious dollars on salaries orbenefits,” she said. “Ofcourse, a new building brings

with it some expenses. Wewill have rent and utilities, but more importantly we needextra dollars to create a com-fortable living environmentfor the dogs, cats, and critterswho will be calling the shel-ter home while they wait fortheir forever families.”

Wagner Kroening said theorganization is fundraising tofence the spacious outdoorplay yard, as well as to outfitthe large dog kennels withbeds, toys, and spill-proofdishes. Every pet that comesinto rescue also gets a well-ness check, and most petsneed some type of vet care, she said.

“We have a busy monthahead of us getting the newbuilding ready and fundrais-ing for a variety of needs, butwe can’t wait to open thedoors and welcome our com-munity inside,” she said.

From the Howard-Suamico School District Board

HSSD Referendum: An InvestmentOn April 3rd the Board of

Education presented a refer-endum, which would begin toaddress long-standing finan-cial challenges faced by theHoward-Suamico SchoolDistrict.

The Board is truly gratefulthat a large majority of thevoters that supported this ref-erendum joined us in our be-lief that education is aninvestment and not simply anexpense. The Board and en-tire district considers theApril 3rd outcome as a state-ment of confidence in ourdistrict and we take the re-sponsibility to steward the as-sociated funds very seriously.

More than 50% of the ref-erendum funds are allocatedto reducing the student toteacher ratios in many of ourclassrooms. This effort beganwhen the Board took un-precedented action to for-mally limit open enrollmentacross many grades, and con-tinues with a plan to hire 30additional teachers over thenext two years. In fact, thedistrict posted 22 new posi-tions in the days immediatelyfollowing the referendum.

In addition, approximately25% of the funds will addressthe challenges in effectivelyretaining current and attract-ing new staff. The pace of

work on this effort from ourteacher-led compensationcommittee takes on a newsense of urgency with the re-cent vote of confidence.

Finally, the remaining quar-ter of funds will be focusedon addressing the district’sdeferred maintenance. Webelieve our facilities profes-sionals are second to noneand they are continuing thistradition of excellence as theywork through all of our de-ferred projects.

As the Board moves for-ward, we will remain focusedon academic performancethat honors both our studentsand taxpayers. In addition,

we will continue to workalongside our legislators ad-vocating for fundamentalchanges to the manner inwhich public education isfunded.

We believe in the invest-ment that is public educationand we’re grateful for ourcommunity’s support in thisbelief.
