CURRENTS&COMMUNITIES
Heart of the TrailMember Mark Kuprych made
a donation last winter “in honor of those who understand why we go out into the heart of nature.” In essence, he’s honoring you.
For fifteen years, many have worked through the Northern Forest Canoe Trail to envision, negotiate, build and paddle into the heart of this grand adventure. Together we developed and marked the course for paddlers to travel its historic Native American route, and experience its present-day beauty from the Adirondacks, to Lake Champlain, to the Great North Woods and to the Allagash.
We thank you for your part in getting us here. Maybe you helped us create a map or kiosk. Maybe you paddled to a pristine campsite, settled by a campfire and shared that memory with others. Maybe you helped build a lean-to, privy or log ladder. Maybe you attend our film fests each spring. Or maybe you simply appreciate that this 740-mile trail exists surrounded by wilderness, rural and small-town settings.
Our new mission statement (see upper left) guides us to care for what we have created and protect its opportunities: to canoe, fish, and jump in a swimming hole; to kayak and connect with friends and family; to be a part of the trail’s natural landscape and visit both glacial and human-made relics.
Together, we protect these opportunities for all who visit our trail. For some, the hard work of maintaining the trail is the greatest reward. For others, the pleasure of a paddling trip revives the spirit more than any other adventure.
Since 2000, the community that nurtures the Northern Forest Canoe Trail is indeed one that understands why we go out into the heart of nature. We are grateful to Mark and all of our friends for being part of this journey. Here’s to paddling the next 15 years!
FROM TOP TO BOTTOM: Volunteers help create a map in 2004; the first Northern Forest Explorers set off in 2008; through paddlers at our 10th anniversary celebration in 2010; trail maintainers and staff at a spring training session in 2014.

Welcome to Our Newest Board Member Kevin Nadeau (Durham, ME) is the Senior Product Developer, Camping and Outdoor Equipment at L.L.Bean. He has 20 years of experience in marketing and merchandizing outdoor sports products from backpacking, fishing and hunting to paddling, cycling and snow sports. Active in all of these pursuits, we look forward to Kevin’s expertise in support of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.
Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends,
We are dedicated to helping people of all ages connect with the beauty and adventure of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. The health benefits of spending time outdoors continue to be popular topics and here’s why.
Studies show that spending time in nature improves overall health by lowering stress and increasing concentration. Being outside encourages a more active lifestyle which can address obesity and depression. Exposure to sunshine increases your vitamin D absorption which helps fight certain illnesses. Kids benefit developmentally: time spent in nature has been shown to improve creativity, problem solving and social skills.
For many of us, myself included, it can be hard to weave outside play into a busy schedule. But the time my parents spent connecting my sister and me with the outdoors— whether messing about with pollywogs behind our house, or spending weekends in the White Mountains—was formative for us both.
I developed physical skills like rock hopping across streams. It fostered my ability to push myself when I’m not completely sure I have the stamina to take one more step or stroke. It cultivated my ability to be quiet and appreciate my surroundings. And now it’s my turn to foster these life skills in my own two sons.
Help a young person in your life get outside—you’ll be better for it, too! Read on about all of the ways NFCT is connecting people to the trail this summer. From Waterway Work Trips to Northern Forest Explorers to our Paddle Series, we have something for everyone.
Happy Trails,
Karrie Thomas, Executive Director

Trail Map UpdatesAccurate maps are important to
navigating the Northern Forest Canoe Trail but the trail is constantly changing. As new campsites are added and portage trails refined, we publish all map updates online. Detailed changes can be found on our website at Plan a Trip/Trail Updates.
Here is a sample of improvements to add to your maps:
MAP 3 New primitive campsite in the Town of Plattsburgh on the Saranac River.
MAP 6New portage around the lower stretches of the Clyde River. New campsite on the west shore of Salem Lake.
MAP 7Long-term paddler parking now available at Normandeau Campsite (ideal place to leave vehicle when doing the Upper Ammonoosuc or Connecticut Rivers).
MAP 8 & 9New lean-to at the Maine Forestry Museum (formerly Rangeley Lakes Regional Logging Museum).
MAP 9New portage route around Grand Falls—it’s now on river right instead of river left.
From peeling to notching to raising, volunteers helped build a new lean-to in Rangeley, ME.

On-the-Trail Washing Stations for Canoes & Kayaks
Aquatic invasive species are changing the ecology and habitat of lakes and rivers, and can be transported to new water bodies by hitchhiking on our boats and gear. You can help prevent their spread by using boat washing stations.
NFCT now has paddler-specific boat washing stations at Louie’s Landing in the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in Swanton, VT, and at Normandeau Campsite on the Upper Ammonoosuc River in Groveton, NH. Please take the time to pause mid-trip to use these stands to wash down your boat and gear, especially before moving upstream from one water body to another along the trail.
