Dear Parents and Students

As another busy term comes to a close I wish to pay tribute to the many fine teachers at Loreto. We are truly blessed to have teachers of such high calibre who understand and embody “teaching as a vocation”.

Parker J Palmer offers this insight:

“Good teaching takes myriad forms but

good teachers share one trait:

they are authentically present in

the classroom, deeply connected with

their students and their subject.

These connections are held in the teacher’s heart

the place where intellect, emotion and spirit

converge in the human-self.”

THANK YOU

I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank both Ms Diamond and Mrs O’Neill on the wonderful jobs they have both done respectively as Acting Deputy – Pastoral Care and Acting Year 12 Co-ordinator in the absence of Ms Carty. These two women provide outstanding leadership and care through generous and selfless service.

Gracious God

May we be a community “of the heart,

from the heart and about the heart”,

May we be grateful, sincere and trusting;

May our teachers be wise, discerning and reflective;

May our students be confident, free and resilient;

And, together, may we be open to the mystery of God’s

presence working with and through each of us as we seek

to be a community of freedom, verity, felicity, sincerity and justice.

This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

2

Ideal courses These are the courses you would really like to study even though your chanc-es of gaining entry may not be assured.

3

4

Realistic courses These courses are less competitive. Realistically, they should provide another way to the career you want or to a second choice career. They can be used to upgrade to your ‘ideal’ course.

5

6

‘Foot-In-The-Door courses

These courses are the ones you are prepared to do if you miss out on all the others. They should be courses that in the past have been quite easy to get into. They can help you upgrade.

Students in the Year 10 Music classes are invited to take part in the “Live ’n’ Wired” Festival to be held on Sunday 21 October from 2pm on the Deshon Oval. Bands from these classes could choose to perform their original song (recorded at Ghost Gum studios) or they could perform a cover of song studied in class. To apply for a spot on the program at this festival please email Mrs Nielson giving the details of the band members and the song title. A high standard of performance is expected and girls would need to be prepared to rehearse together for this performance.

CELTIC STORM

A letter was sent home to parents of girls in the Senior Choir and Orchestra last week outlining the rehearsal schedule for Celtic Storm. Please check with your daughter if you did not receive this letter. Spare letters can be collected from Mrs Carr in the Music Staffroom.

This Week’s Draw:

Open A vs Mt St Michael’s at Loreto (MWC)

Open B vs Brigidine at Bardon State School (bus)

Intermediate A vs St John Fisher at Clem Jones Centre, Carina (bus)

Intermediate B vs St Rita’s at Clem Jones Centre, Carina (bus)

Junior A vs San Sisto at San Sisto courts near Carina Library (bus)

Junior B vs Brigidine at Loreto (outside court)

Round 2 Reports

Open A were defeated by St John Fisher 42 to 12

Loreto displayed strong defence throughout the match but were unable to match the court transition speed of their tough

opponents. Isabella Mammone and Taili Beausang scored several strong layups but needed assistance in rebounding from

team mates. It was pleasing to see Loreto maintain determination until the final siren.

Open B were defeated by San Sisto 69 to 22

Loreto faced a very strong opposition and were unable to stop the flow of baskets against them. Rebounding needs to

continue to develop in the next matches. Loreto fought hard with enthusiasm and commitment but were outclassed in this

match.

Intermediate A were defeated by All Hallows’ 66 to 9

All Hallows’ had several very good players and Loreto were unable to stop their scoring spree. It was pleasing to see all girls

work hard even though the scoring was very one-sided. A good team effort and improvements are obvious in team work.

Intermediate B defeated Our Lady’s College 19 to 10

In Loreto’s first game of the season, they started very strongly. They held OLC to nil in the first quarter, while Isobella Scott

scored the opening 5 points. As the game progressed, OLC got stronger and the game became more physical. Sidney Brain

played an excellent game at guard.

Junior A defeated Our Lady’s College 50 to 6

Loreto played good offence and enjoyed the opportunity to score. Top scorers were Jessica Galpin, Zoe Sever and Tayla

Jansen. Laura Schenk and Adrianna Urbina were strong in defence. A great team effort by all players, contributing to a very

strong win.

Junior B were defeated by St Rita’s 28 to 14

Loreto will need to continue to work on rebounding to continue to improve in future weeks. Lucy Briggs and Caitlin

Mandrusiak had strong games in attack. The court transition from attack to defence was excellent as was the fluid movement

of the ball in passing. Nyree Wood - Basketball Coordinator

Year 10 Laptop Survey The Year 10 Student Laptop Program has been running for almost a term now and as a way of gathering feedback on how the program was progressing we conducted a survey. This survey asked a range of question including had the tablet improved their educational opportunities at school and at home, the use of One Note in their classes and how many hours per day were they spending on their computer. They were also given the chance to write some extended responses as well. This type of information allows us to evaluate the experiences of the present Year 10 students and to plan how to maximise the effectiveness of the program for the current group of girls as well as for future year levels. Some of the feedback is below.

One of the issues raised was that of digital textbooks and the desire to reduce the weight carried by the students to and from school. I have been working closely with all of the Academic Co-ordinators and as many textbooks as possible in 2013 will come with digital versions so that students can leave the paper version of the book at school. This means that if they have homework that requires a textbook they can use the digital version that is either loaded onto their tablet, available on Edukate (our Learning Management System) or accessed through a website. Unfortunately for schools co-ordinating this can be a little problematic as all of the different publishers have different methods of making these digital texts available.
