Morning tea for cancer. The Landsborough Hall Committee and Craft Group together with the wider Landsborough Community are hosting this annual event to raise funds for cancer research. They will be having a cent auction on the day and need prizes to auction, big or small and donations for morning tea. Donations can be collected or can be left at craft group on Wednesday mornings. Some of you may know that this week is officially National Volunteer Week, and the motto is ‘Inspiring the Volunteer in You’.And last Friday morning local member for Glasshouse – Andrew Powell organised a special morning tea to say thanks to just some of the many volunteers who contribute much to our local communities.I was really pleased to be asked to be the MC on the day – it was great to be able to do this very small thing to show my support and acknowledgment of the great work done by volunteers in our community.Andrew made the point that while it may not seem much to provide the recipients with a certificate and a piece of cake, an event like this is an important way to remind those that received the awards and the groups who nominated them just how much we appreciate their efforts.

And I have to say the event was inspiring and the cake was very popular - and thanks to Andrew and his dedicated staff for taking the time to shine the light on these inspirational volunteers.And while we are on the topic of cake and morning tea – you will no doubt notice this week in the paper there is a number of groups organising ‘Big Morning Teas’ as fundraisers for Cancer research and support – keep an eye out for one that is local to your area and help fight cancer.

Mark McArdle seeks action on Landsborough’s car parking woesLandsborough business owners and local residents are more hopeful that their ongoing long term problems with railway commuters parking in front of businesses in Cribb Street will finally see some solutions enacted thanks to action by Mark McArdle MP.Jason Coultis and Olivia Tulloch owners of Mellum Munchies have seen many businesses, including their own, affected by the ongoing parking issues. Jason said the problem was that there were not enough car spaces at the Railway Station forcing commuters to park in front of businesses.“Regular customers can’t get to the stores when they want to and it’s costing businesses quite a good amount of money,” he said.“It’s good that people are catching transport - it’s just providing adequate parking. I feel sorry for the commuters too, probably the vast majority don’t want to park in front of us."Wilfred Rocker from Network Video Landsborough has had customers tell him that they were forced to travel to Beerwah when they couldn’t find a car park outside his store.“Landsborough is a thriving little country town and the commuters which contribute to that a little bit are congesting the street that much that it’s choking us when it comes to our locals wanting to come in to do some shopping. They can’t get a parking spot and that happens on a daily basis,” he said.Wilfred believes it is not the commuters fault.“They’re trying to do the right thing, they’re trying to catch transport to work to save the

environment. The problem is locals are deterred from shopping in the main street because of the congestion,” he said.Last Friday Mark McArdle MP, Andew Powell MP and Shadow Transport Minister, Scott Emerson MP, went to look at the problem. Mark McArdle has also sent correspondence to Hon Ms Annastacia Palaszczuk, Minister for Transport and Multicultural Affairs, highlighting the issue.Some solutions local business owners say they’d like to see happen are timed parking signs where there currently are none, land on the opposite side of the railway turned into parking, an extension of the existing car park and more consideration by some commuters.“Some cars have been in front of the stores for two days straight. In the mornings a lot of them will park in the street even when the car park is half empty,” Wilfred said. A TransLink spokesman said that Landsborough Railway Station currently has 207 car parking spaces. The most recent upgrade was in 2008 when 70 car parking spaces were added. There are no plans to extend the car park at Landsborough at this stage.

Green light for Glass House streetscape projectImproved pedestrian safety and a stronger village feel are just some of the features of the Glasshouse Streetscape Project. Construction is about to begin and Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the works would breathe new life into Bruce Parade.“Originally the work that was to be undertaken on this stage of project had a total budget of $250,000 but through the bringing forward of funds allocated in the 2011/2012 budget we have been able to dramatically improve what we are able to do,” Cr Anna said.“This project will include landscaping and planting works to improve the look of the town centre that is currently an expanse of bitumen from one side of the street to the other,” she said.“Bruce Parade currently runs through the middle of the car parking area and there are not clearly defined paths for pedestrians from one side of the street to the other.“This project will provide separation between the parking area in the town centre and through-traffic and will also provide clearly designated crossing points for pedestrians.”Other features of the $700,000 Glasshouse Streetscape Project include:Additional seating areas and gardens; washed concrete footpaths; feature handrail to western footpath outside existing café; upgraded street lighting; improved underground drainage; provision for additional caravan and heavy vehicle parking; two additional motorcycle parking bays.Work is due to start in the week commencing May 30 and is expected to be completed within 12 weeks (weather permitting). During construction pedestrian property access may be affected for short durations. Council officers will contact residents, where relevant, to discuss timing for access or parking if works are likely to restrict access. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. During construction of the underground road

drainage in Bruce Parade, part road closures at the immediate works locations may occur for short durations during which detour routes will be sign posted.

The 'Mistress’ keeps marriage motoringIt’s very rare for a wife to say she’s happy for her husband to spend time with ‘The Mistress’ but that’s exactly the case for Beerwah couple Darryll and Colleen Ashby. Colleen even credits the mistress for keeping their 30 year marriage a happy one. When you find out the mistress is actually a ’65 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2 it all becomes clear.“I nicknamed the car, ‘The Mistress’, because of all the time and money you spend on it you see,” Colleen said.“It’s really brought my husband and I very close together, sharing it. It’s something we’re both very passionate about now. And after 30 years of marriage I think that’s important.”At the recent 2011 National Mustang Concours held at the Gold Coast at Easter they won the Gold Award in the Display Class. This is only the second time they have entered their car. The first time was for the 2010 State Mustang Concours where they also won the Top Gold Award.It has taken four and a half years for the car to be restored. Darryll praised Colleen for all her support during the restoration. “It was definitely a joint effort,” he said.Colleen was quick to point out all the hard work Darryll put in. “Naturally we’re both really proud but I think I’m even prouder because Darryll actually built our car from the ground up. The paint, the panel, mechanical, everything; and not many men could say that.”Darryll said rebuilding the car needed perseverance, patience and finding just the right

part. He thinks he had an edge over the 47 strong field because of the attention to detail.“It’s just the finer things that separate them. I heard they couldn’t fault my interior and engine bay,” he said.Darryll and Colleen also belong to the Mustang Owners Club of Australia which they say is 50 per cent of the enjoyment of owning Mustangs. (They also have a ’66 Mustang GT convertible as well which they don’t show.) “It’s the camaraderie and being around like minded people and friends,” said Darryll.In between showing, going to events and displays, cruising the roads and even travelling overseas to attend Mustang anniversaries you soon understand why this couple enjoy their cars so much.“The good fun that we get out of it now, together, is the best part,” Darryll said.

Aussie World’s newest attractionWith the success of the new thrill ride Giant Redback, launched just last month, another two rides are in the making at Aussie World. This week the fun park alongside the iconic Ettamogah Pub has introduced the aptly named Giant Slide, a much-loved attraction at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.The slide is 150 feet long, 50 feet high and 30 feet wide and the subsequent ride is yet to be formally announced but will be the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast.These rides take Aussie World’s investment into the ever popular facility past the $2 million dollar mark, reinforcing Aussie World as a major player in the Sunshine Coast tourism industry.General Manager David Thompson said the purchase of these new attractions will entice more visitors to come to the Sunshine Coast and to stay for longer.“Due to our management principles and unique diversity of the complex, such as being the

largest off site function venue on the Coast, we are successfully forging ahead and are able to make this significant investment,” he said.“We will also remain an affordable and fun day out by not increasing our gate entrance prices.”The three new rides will enhance the current six function areas and 30 rides and attractions on site, which include the Town Hall, The Shed, Giant Redback, Wild Mouse Rollercoaster, Ferris Wheel, Rock n Roll Rebel Dark Ride, Dodgem Cars and Side Show Alley.

Bringing butterflies back from the brinkIt is never too late to help a worthy cause as the residents of Twin Cedars Over 50’s Lifestyle Village at Beerburrum have recently demonstrated. When Jenny Donovan, resident of Twin Cedars and a member of the Bribie Island Environment Protection Association, told the residents about the plight of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, all of them, including the Twin Cedar’s management, were keen to do their bit. There are now 15 newly planted Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines growing at Twin Cedars which will help expand the Southern Corridor Habitat for the vulnerable butterfly.While the decision to plant the vines had already been made, an informative and interesting

presentation by Ray Seddon, from Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network and Gwen, from GMAN about the butterfly made the residents even more determined to help.“It helped to understand just how endangered the butterfly is. How we can actually do something positive and real to give them a better chance of survival,” Jenny said.

She said it’s not just planting the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine that makes a difference, (it is the only plant the Richmond Birdwing Caterpillar can eat) but the eradication of the imported weed, Dutchman’s Pipe Vine, which kills the caterpillar.It is hoped if the vines grow well that the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly will make an appearance around spring next year. Jenny said all the residents feel wonderful being a part of the project.“It gives that feeling of great satisfaction and pleasure. Everyone is looking forward to seeing these butterflies here - something beautiful we helped preserve.”Anyone can help by purchasing vines to assist in restoring the natural habitat of the butterfly. On Sunday June 5, from 10.00am to 4.00pm BADYACC and the Hinterland Community Development Association are holding a fantastic Off The Wall Sk8 Park Event at the Roberts Road Skate Park, Beerwah. There will be three categories, 12 and under, 13 to 16 and 17 and over with great prizes and giveaways. Entertainment on the day will include local youth band ‘The Escape’ and a DJ. Tutu Much Fun!We recently brought you the story of Tina Eccles and her Scrapheap Adventure Ride quest and happily we can report that she was successful in reaching both her targets. The first was to raise over $1,000 for the Down Syndrome Foundation and the second, to successfully reach Cameron’s Corner 1,400 kilometres away.What she wasn’t expecting was a new rule which stated that anyone riding a scooter to the state’s corner had to wear a tutu if they wanted a drink at the bar that night. As you can see from the photo Tina happily complied.“It was a great night among the 50 odd riders and many people who came as support,” she said. The trip took Tina six and a half days. Her Sachs Madass 140cc motorcycle (which she affectionately calls Sagy) did have some carburettor issues, but she was able to fix those along the way.

“The ride was so much fun and I raised over $1,000 for the Down Syndrome Foundation. Overall the ride raised $53,000,” Tina said.“This result was amazing. I would like to thank all who supported my ride and build of Sagy. Karen Hagger-Peen the director of Glasshouse Mountains ABC Learning Centre was thrilled with the gift and explained the benefit of it in helping the children develop their motor skills, and indicated the children will certainly be fascinated.

Dirt Thirst at Beerwah has just celebrated their first birthday and business owner Brock would like to give a big thanks to all their customers for their support over the last year.Dirt Thirst has also taken another step into the motocross market with their own range of all Australian MX gear about to be launched in the next month. Fun at Beerwah Kindy

Bee Happy at Beerwah State Primary School Bee Happy Puppets recently visited Prep J1 and Prep J2. At Beerwah Prep there are many skills that are an important part of the program for all students, including social and emotional skills. Life skills such as learning to mix with others, knowing that all people are individuals, while recognising differences and communicating with others, are all important elements.As part of being a ‘Kandoo’ student at our school, we learn about Respect, being Safe and being an Active Learner. The Bee Happy Puppet Show demonstrated how to gain and extend these skills. We met Lilly the Crocodilly, Chloe the Bear, Fritzl the Dog and many other puppet friends.

Fun at the Father’s Night at Beerwah Kindy

The children and families of Beerwah and District Kindergarten have had a very exciting and busy start to 2011. The end of term one saw the children dance their way through the Jungle Disco. This event was a great night for the families involved in the Kindy to get to know each other and have some fun. Many thanks go out to the FUNdraising committee for the well organised event.One of the great experiences has been Father’s Night. This was a fantastic opportunity for the dads to be exposed to ‘the Kindy experience’. The children were all so excited to be able to show their dads around their Kindy. Some of the fun involved carpentry, collage, playdough, reading books and a special dance session at the conclusion of the night.Most recently the children participated in the Obstacle-a-thon, with the help of many supportive family members. Children were encouraged to demonstrate their improved gross motor development by jumping, balancing, crawling through tunnels and climbing their way along the course. All the while raising valuable funds for the Kindy.Over the next term there will be a visit from the fire department and the much anticipated Grandparent's Day!

Mooloolah Community get-togetherIn the spirit of National Volunteers Week (May 9 -13), community group representatives and other residents of Mooloolah got together last Tuesday for a sharing session and morning tea at the Mooloolah Community Centre.The Mooloolah Community get-together was about sharing information, effort, resources and ideas for the benefit of the Mooloolah community. Cr Jenny McKay attended, listening to and supporting what the various groups are doing and spoke about Council's current initiatives in the local area.Vice President of the Mooloolah Community Centre, Natasha Odgers, said they wanted to bring all the community groups in Mooloolah together for groups to share what great things were happening and to look at how they could support each other. "There were many comments during the morning tea from people saying they were amazed at how much is going on,” she said."People often hear bits and pieces, but when we put it all together and are able to have representatives explain why the various projects and events are happening, we gain a much greater appreciation and connection with the community and feel more inclined to take part or spread the word," she said."This was the first time in a long time, if ever, to have groups in Mooloolah come together specifically for information sharing of this nature. Groups who were not able to attend received the shared information by email and have been asked to provide any further information to give everyone the opportunity to make the connections."We looked at how we can collaborate on some particular initiatives such as re-establishing the Mooloolah Community Christmas Party, Mooloolah Family Fun Day and ideas for re-establishing community use of the Recreation Grounds," Natasha said. Community collaboration on a town scale is planned to continue for a more connected and active Mooloolah.

Glass House volunteers recognised at second annual ceremonyMember for Glass House, Andrew Powell, has proudly hosted the second annual Glass House Volunteer Awards designed to recognise the hard work of volunteers in our community.“Volunteers truly are the lifeblood of any community - they keep things ticking over and in most cases are not thanked enough for the vital role they play."It was great that for the second year in a row we could link the Glass House ceremony with the nation-wide celebration for National Volunteers week," Mr Powell said.Mr Powell invited community groups, schools, churches and sporting groups from across the electorate to submit a nomination for one of their outstanding volunteers."The word is out I'd say - we had so many new groups submitting nominations this year and plenty of the ones from last year who took the opportunity to recognise another one of their hardworking volunteers."I must say my favourite part of the day is having

Pacific celebrates 10th year in styleHigh levels of enthusiasm accompanied Pacific Lutheran College’s 10th birthday celebrations last week. Foundation parents and students joined current students to open the new library and multipurpose facility at the dual celebration. Principal, Dr Bronwyn Dolling highlighted the importance of partnerships in the College’s success. “We have been able to achieve such amazing things in academic, cultural, sporting, pastoral care, service and outdoor education activities through the passion, goodwill and talent of our staff, parents and students,” she said. Executive Director of Lutheran Education Queensland, Mrs Sue Kloeden, paid special tribute to the outstanding staff and leadership team.The music at the celebration was a showcase of talent.

Students gave a preview of their ‘Godspell’ performance and the concert band had the audience tapping its feet. Senator Claire Moore commented on the spirit of the college as students joined in the celebrations and the quality of the music.In the same week the college learnt that Year 12 student of 2010, Jeremy Smith, had received an Australian Student Prize. This prize is awarded by the Federal Government to the top 500 Year 12 students across Australia each year and includes a certificate and $2,000 payment. Dr Dolling acknowledged the award as an outstanding achievement for Jeremy and the college. “Jeremy is the second student to receive this prize in the college’s history. It is a testament to the quality and maturity of the college’s education program, and the commitment of both boys,” she said.

Coffee near a carparkOn my weekend ritual to Mary Cairncross Park for my caffeine fix, I was appalled to see that council has taken part of the park and turned it into a car park. Do they not understand that families love the park to picnic in and for their children to safely kick a ball around. Now families have less area to use. Then a few steps through the park and I was confronted with more devastation the council has inflicted on my beloved park. In the name of progress they have destroyed numerous trees to put up a car park which ironically will not offer any more car spaces.The council is obviously out of touch with why people flock to the park. Garden destroyedI do not enjoy writing this letter but I would just like to report a case of wilful damage to our front garden. We live in Mooloolah Road, Mooloolah Valley and are proud of our wonderful garden. Everyone who passes admires it and comments

on it. They say it’s the best garden in the town.Imagine our consternation on Sunday morning (May 8) when we got up and witnessed that, what was once a beautiful garden had been trashed. Every plant had been pulled out. It was an absolute desecration and a nightmare as we are both in our 90’s and now don’t feel safe in our own home. We have both worked tirelessly for the community and like to think we are well regarded. Such an act of vandalism cannot be overlooked. If anyone has any ideas who the culprits are, please inform the police or us.

Shikan Taza in BeerwahOver the last few years, meditation has become more popular in the west and is recognised as a valuable method of dealing with many medical problems. It had its origins in ancient India where it was used as a spiritual discipline. It soon spread to China, where it was called ‘Chan’ and to Korea, where it was called ‘Soen’, then finally onto Japan where it was given the now familiar name ‘Zen’. It specifically focusses on the practices of Samatha (Stop) and Vypassana (See) or Shikan (Stopping the mind).The study and practice of Shikan, enabled serious practitioners to eventually see into and through the illusion of life by slowing down or ‘stopping’ the ego-centered activity of the mind. Reality in Truth could be both seen and experienced.Over one and half thousand years ago, the great Chinese master Zhi Yi, devoted his life to developing, practicing and teaching the meditations of Samatha~Vypassana to an extremely high level. Such was the degree of training that it took 12 years for monks to complete in order to gain full understanding and mastery. Today, in the traditional Zen sense, practice still continues through Japan’s Tendai gyoja (monks and nuns).

Launching the 'Just Start Walking' initiative in Beerwah, local chiropractor Dr Braxton Turnage said while we are living in more mobile times thanks to portable technology, physically we are less active.“The human body is designed for movement, so to keep your spine at its best we need to stay active – it’s time to lace up the sneakers and quite simply, just start walking,” he said.Coinciding with the launch is National Chiropractic Care Week, which Dr Braxton Turnage and his team will be using to highlight the importance of posture and mobility on our overall health and wellbeing. Community GrantsI encourage community groups, including sporting groups, to apply for funds under the Volunteer Grants 2011 programme. Local community organisations can apply for a grant of between $1,000 and $5,000 to help purchase a variety of equipment to assist the work of volunteers. Glass House Volunteer AwardsWe received an overwhelming number of nominations this year and I am pleased to say that hardworking volunteers from groups such as the Glasshouse Mountains Rural Fire Brigade, Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch were officially recognised and thanked at the ceremony last Friday. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our society and really do deserve a big, big thank you as often as we can for the great work they do within our local schools, churches, hospitals, sporting groups and other community based organisations. This is the second year I have held these awards and I am pleased to say we had even more nominations this year! Lea knows almost all of the people at the ceremony so I know she enjoys the chance to thank them just as much as I do.Update on Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way upgradeI am very cognisant that one of the main issues for the Glass House Mountains township continues to be the need to complete a full upgrade of the Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way intersection. Population growth in Glass House is now causing major congestion at this outdated intersection.I have been working at securing funding for this upgrade since becoming the local member for the area and will continue to do what I can to see it happen. My latest correspondence with the Minister for Main Roads has advised the planning study will be completed by the end of this year. What will happen after that is anyone’s guess – we can only hope that the data they have researched will show an overwhelming need to spend the money soon. I have also written via ‘Right to Information’ asking what the total cost for this project will be and will keep you informed on the answer when I receive it.

Over the last few months we have lived the roller coaster of life on a global scale.We have seen a huge wedding (I am so glad I am not paying for that one), the death of Osama Bin Laden. We have seen the destructive powers of tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and the associated grief they bring. Some of us have even been confronted with the death of a loved one.Over the last few months the world seems to be spiralling out of control. And people want to know why? What is God doing?When he was here on earth, Jesus was presented with a similar situation. There were two shocking tragedies that got people asking this very question.One was where the government of the day executed people at worship for unknown reasons. Pontius Pilate actually ordered their execution while they were at worship.The other tragedy was that a tower collapsed killing 18 innocent people.Many people thought that these people must have done something really wrong for God to punish these people in this way.Yet Jesus says they are not more innocent or guiltier than anyone else.But He goes onto warn his listeners and us his readers that we too will share in their fate one day i.e. death.George Burns said I don’t mind dying; I just don’t want to be there when it happens. But the harsh reality of life is that we are all going to pass away.And during these times of tragedy God speaks to us and warns us that none of us really know when this will be.There are some verses in the book of Revelation where God sends plague after plague upon the earth and thousands of people die as a result.

The verses say that one third of the population die with each plague - but still no one listens to God or comes to Him.I want to suggest to you that God speaks in times of tragedy yet very few of us listen.We tend to live as if this life is all there is and we tend to live as if we are in control of our lives and so we live as if there is no God or, even if we do believe in God we live as if we don’t need him.God’s verdict on this sort of attitude is that He calls us fools. These tragedies remind us of the brevity of life. And they warn us that what we need to be is rich toward God because we never know when our time is up.I do not want to suggest that God is punishing people for their specific sin, because people we call good die as well as people we might classify as evil or bad – they also pass away. Nor do I want to suggest that God delights in death. Far from it. God hates death.But none the less the fact that we all die is a reminder to us that ultimately, we are answerable to God for how we have lived our lives.Tragedies are an awful way to remind us that we all one day face our creator and judge.Jesus tells the story about a man who strikes it rich. He stays awake wondering about what to do with his newfound wealth. He says, "I will eat, drink and be merry" (which is where we get this saying from).Jesus verdict upon this man is that he is a fool because he passes away unexpectedly that night. Jesus concludes with the question, "What good is it to be rich now put poor when it comes to our relationship with God?"

To be honest, I have not had the enormous success I envisaged going into autumn this month. This is mainly attributed to the intermittent rain that just happened to occur just after I liberally sprayed with Dipel in a desperate attempt to eradicate my very healthy caterpillar population.Luckily for me, nothing seems to eat chokos (even my kids – willingly), so this is one very prominent vegetable on our dinner plates of late. This coupled with pumpkin, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and bush beans, has prompted our kids to suggest some very interesting alternative uses for these vegetables.On the bright side, we have loads of bananas, paw paw and passionfruit available, and some mandarins just beginning to ripen. Growing my own paw paws however, didn’t change their taste and ultimately didn’t change the fact that we don’t like them, so it’s lucky my neighbour does, as they just keep coming.With all the rain, the available nitrogen and potassium (both having a weak bond to the soil)

would have been leached from the soil and I will be side-dressing the surviving plants with some blood and bone and manure to amend this. Furthermore on the nutrient side of things, I am aiming once again to plant a green manure crop of barley which unlocks phosphorus from the soil, and some nitrogen fixing lucerne which is a great perennial that can be harvested regularly for high nitrogen mulch - and guinea pig food.Finally, to deal with those incessant caterpillars, I use organically certified Dipel. This product contains a naturally occurring bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis) found in the soil that only kills young caterpillars, thus not harming other organisms even if digested.The biggest problem I have however, is timing the applications effectively so that it is on long enough to have the desired impact on my healthy caterpillar population. It would seem though that I can conjure up rain from blue skies just by spraying Dipel on my veggies.Oh and finally for those who follow this column regularly, I will concede defeat when it comes to

my limited time gardening. My produce level is at a very bare minimum because I haven’t been down in the garden at crucial insect hatching times and the weeds are going berserk. I usually pride myself on a neat and tidy patch, but I am embarrassed to say that I will be having to get in and revamp the whole area to bring it back up to scratch.So, the month of May will be a busy one of both maintenance and regular plantings. I hope you all are enjoying your gardens and are not being discouraged by the challenges encountered. Don’t give up, keep on growing!

The Mooloolah Sustainable Living Group lit up with a combination of solar and community power at their launch event on Thursday, May 12 at the Mooloolah Public Hall. The action group showed a public screening of the inspiring movie, ‘The Power of Community: how Cuba survived peak oil’.Cr Jenny McKay officially launched the Mooloolah Sustainable Living Group with the flick of solar lights and applause from the audience.“Our local group was about reducing our impact on the earth and working together towards a more sustainable future,” said group coordinator, Natasha Odgers.

“Since our first small meeting around a kitchen table at the end of January, we have formed into a community action group to host a range of local

events, workshops and other community projects.“We are also encouraging information sharing of others’ initiatives for people to access the many ways to live in more sustainable ways,” she said.The Mooloolah Sustainable Living Group called for ideas and input from locals to gauge what sustainable living topics and skills people were most interested in.“Prior to the movie night, the group had put ideas boxes around town and held a stall over the recent four Saturdays to ask people directly what they would like to see,” she said.“There has already been lots of positive support for the group and the opportunities it brings to locals. These ideas will form the basis for future events and workshops hosted by the Mooloolah Sustainable Living Group,” Natasha said.Ideas flowed from discussion circles on the night about a range of sustainable living topics such as public transport, making goods from scratch and growing our own food. This small tea tree gets its beautiful name of Wooroonooran from the aboriginal people of North Queensland. It is their name for what we know as Mt Bellenden-Ker, Queensland’s second highest peak where this tea tree naturally grows. This gorgeous little tea tree has stunning flushes of coppery new growth and becomes a dense shrub to approximately 2m x 2m, but can be kept smaller by an annual prune. Throughout spring and summer masses of white five petalled flowers will adorn the shrub. It is also good as a screening or hedging plant. We will have them on display at our stand at the Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo at Turner Park, Beerwah on May 29. Look forward to seeing you there and happy gardening.

Beegees Soccer ClubContributed by Frank DoonanOn Friday, night May 20, our 2nd division Women’s team and over 35’s play at home. On Saturday we have another 13 games starting at 9.00am with our under 8’s, 9’s and under 10’s then games will continue all day finishing with our senior men’s teams kicking off at 3.00pm for Division 2 and 5.00pm for Division 1. Our under 13 boys had a good win on Saturday beating Caboolture 11-1. The boys dominated the games as the score suggests with seven different goal scorers which showed the boys work as a team. Our women’s 1st division had a good win on Friday night beating Woombye. Our division 1 men’s team played well losing 3-0 but the improvement in this team as the season goes on is incredible they are such a young squad taking on more senior and seasoned teams. They are competing well week in week out so keep it going fellows. Don’t forget, Friday nights have canteen and meals on, so come down and support the club.

Beerwah Indoor Bowls ClubRecently a group of Beerwah Indoor Bowlers visited the Woodford Indoor Bowls Club to participate in their Ladies Day competitions. Some of the Beerwah people were lucky to win places in the finals. There were so many visitors from other clubs, to win a prize with so much competition was quite a thrill.

We are still looking for new members so if you would like to have a try at indoor bowling come along on Mondays, play starts at 12.30pm. If you can be at the Beerwah Hall by 12.15pm it will assist the games director with draws should you wish to try your hand.

Men’s Pairs and Triples close on May 21.We have been away in Bundaberg since Thursday with the Travelling Bowlers. There were 49 people on the trip from about 10 different Clubs on the Coast. We played at Bargara, Woodgate and Elliott Heads. We were greeted with warmth at each Club and their players turned out in great numbers. We had a few medical problems on the last day but in all it was a greatly enjoyable trip. Where to next year?
