6 Love of Crochet | Summer 2014 loveofcrochet.com
I always crochet more in the summertime. I don’t the have patience for long, drawn-out knitting projects, and the speed with which I can complete crocheted projects perfectly suits my short, summer attention span. This summer is no different, and with so many kids in my family, I am particularly excited to create the Busy Bees Playset, page 74. I know the darling crocheted bee and fl ower fi nger puppets will be a big hit with the kiddos, and the fun, creative, and practical hive for storage will be a big hit for the moms. I am also excited about the tiny amount
of yarn required for this project, and I am planning on digging into my bin of leftover yarn to make most of the puppets, making this set a thoughtful and economical gift.
Not only does crochet keep my short attention span focused, it also encourages my creativity to run wild. The free-form nature of the stitches feels like an open invitation to add my own splashes of color. I am already putting aside balls of yarn to create the fl oral motifs featured in the Blossom Bag, page 84. While I love the look of the monochromatic bag pictured, I am eager to see how a multicolored look will change the fi nish of this simple tote. As an added bonus, using small amounts of multiple colors makes this bag a fantastic stash-buster.
After creating two fun projects using stash yarn, I am going to treat myself to a new shawl. We have picked the Olive Twist, page 42, as our crochet along project this summer. Crocheted using Creative Linen, a cool linen and cotton blend, this shawl will make a fantastic cover up on breezy summer nights. We know that the stitches in this shawl can be a bit tricky, so in addition to crocheting this project with you, we have added a step-by-step tutorial on www.LoveofCrochet.com to help you with the stitches. If you want to crochet along with us, be sure to sign up for our newsletter to keep up-to-date on our news and progress. We can’t wait to hear what you have been working on this summer and see your crocheted shawls!

We all have a few once-loved
sweaters that we no longer
wear but can’t bear to part
with. Rather than leaving them
hanging lonely in the closet,
use your crafty skills to breathe
new life into them! By simply
removing the existing sleeves
and crocheting new ones, you
can create a brand-new look that
is completely unique. Recycling
your old sweaters is a fun way
to go green and update your
wardrobe on a budget.

We have a trick up our sleeves!
Upcycled Sweaters
loveofcrochet.com Love of Crochet | Summer 2014 29
Picking the Right Sweater When looking for a sweater
to recycle, you’ll need to to
examine how it is constructed.
It is especially important to
think about how the sleeves
are attached because you want
them to be easy to remove. Our
sample (photo A) was made with
set in sleeves, and the technique
described here will be similar
for drop shoulder constructions.
Take a close look at other sleeve
or shoulder constructions (i.e.
raglan, yoke, saddle) because
you may need to use a different
technique.
It is also important to
understand how the pieces in
your sweater were made. Were
the pieces knit in the round, knit
fl at, or cut from machine knit
fabric? The striped and purple
samples are great options for
a sleeve update because the
pieces are constructed much like
those in a hand-knit sweater,
and the sleeves can be removed
by undoing the seam stitching
(photo B). The red sample is an
example of a piece that needs
a little more work. The edges of
this sweater’s pieces are serged,
and removing this serging will
cause the pieces to unravel
(photo C). Even more concerning,
C
B
Athe shoulder seam was made
by serging the sleeve and body
pieces at the same time. In this
case, we would leave the seam
intact and remove the sleeve by
cutting close to it.
After you have decided if it will
be possible to neatly remove
the sleeves, you should start
thinking about how you want
your new sweater to look. Will
your sleeves feature lace, cables,
or colorwork? What type and
weight of yarn will best work
with your existing fabric and
your planned pattern? Think
about the measurements of your
existing sweater, especially the
armhole depth, and plan for the
sleeve length and shape of your
new sweater.
Our striped sample sweater
started with long sleeves, and
was still a good sweater, but
just didn’t match our style any
longer. We wanted to jazz it up
and make it more likely to get
some wearing time again. We
still wanted long sleeves, but
we thought they should have a
more feminine look. We chose a
worsted weight yarn with some
shine from tencel and a lovely
color that pulled out one of the
colors in the original sweater.Check out the Summer 2014 Issue of Love of Knitting to learn how to add knit sleeves.
30 Love of Crochet | Summer 2014 loveofcrochet.com
Removing the SleevesIf your sweater is like our sample, you will want to
fi nd the seam stitches and start carefully removing
them. These are often a woven stitch or a crocheted
slip stitch (see sample). Carefully identify the
seaming thread and begin cutting (photo D). It is
important not to cut the body fabric and to be extra
careful around other seams, such as the top of the
shoulder or the side seam on the body (photos E and
F). If these areas do start coming undone, the seams
can be reinforced during the fi nishing process.
Picking up StitchesOnce you’ve removed your sleeves, picking up
stitches will be easy because you will simply begin
crocheting into the fabric of your sweater at the
armhole openings. You will likely not be using the
same yarn as in the body, so a standard pick up ratio
may not work. Before you start picking up stitches,
it is important to decide at what gauge the new
sleeves will be worked and how many stitches will
be needed for the pattern. We used locking stitch
markers to measure out 1 inch intervals around
our armhole openings (photo G). This gave us an
easy way to balance out the picked up stitches;
for example, if our gauge is 6 stitches per inch we
pick up 6 stitches in each 1 inch interval. Use your
crochet hook to pull the yarn from the inside of the
body, and work the fi rst round in single crochet. We
picked up 66 stitches around each armhole opening
for the stitch pattern we chose (photo H).

Placing the Pattern You can choose any pattern you like for the sleeves, but you
may need to pick up a different number of stitches to give you
a multiple that works. We chose an easy yet gorgeous scalloped
pattern for our sweater to give it some extra style. We worked
our decreases every 6 rounds and continued until we had full-
length sleeves. However, the beauty of this project is that you
can customize your sleeves in any way you like.
That’s all there is to it! We invite you to use this technique as a fun
opportunity to go green while personalizing your style. The next
time you’re cleaning out your closet, or even shopping at your
favorite thrift store, you just might fi nd your next recycled sweater.

Tunisian Crochet: Color Changes
Beginner’s Guide
By Sheryl Thies
Ever since we’ve been old enough to grasp a crayon, we’ve been
adding color to our world. Sometimes we color outside the lines,
sometimes inside the lines and sometimes we prefer to draw our
own lines.
Adding color is a simple way of personalizing your work. You may prefer to go for bold and bright or simply subtle. Perhaps you just want to draw the viewer’s eye to a certain area. Adding bit of color will do the job.
Once you’ve learned how to work Tunisian crochet with one color, you are ready to explore adding an additional color to your work. Because of the vertical and horizontal construction of Tunisian crochet, you are not limited to working simple stripes. Rather, there’s a magical quality to Tunisian crochet color changes.
Color can be changed at either edge, left or right, or anywhere within the row that you choose. Depending on where you add the second color, you will get a different appearance.
Use these techniques
in the Ocean Breeze
placemat and coaster
pattern on page 12.

Note
loveofcrochet.com Love of Crochet | Summer 2014 71
A color change on the right hand edge is made near the end of the return pass. Working the last two loops of the return pass creates the fi rst vertical bar, so to make all the vertical bars the same color, the color change occurs on the return pass when two loops remain on the hook. Move the color to be dropped off toward the edge. Tie the new color yarn in a slipknot on the hook, and pull the knot through the last two loops. Work the forward pass with the color just added. Do not cut the color dropped, and at the end of the next return pass, again move the color to be dropped off to the edge and bring the color to be added to the left and up to the hook. This locks the new color on top of the color being dropped, keeping the strand close to the edge.
Changing colors on the right hand edge creates a defi nitive stripe pattern on the front side of the work. The wrong side of the work has a less defi ned stripe pattern.

Beginner’s Guide
Color change on left hand sideA left edge color change is worked in the middle of the row, when the forward pass is complete. To begin the return pass, move the color to be dropped off to the edge. Make a slipknot with the color to be added and place it on the hook. Pull the slipknot through the fi rst loop on the hook. This counts as the [yo, pull through one loop] of the return pass. The return pass continues normally with [yo, pull through two loops]. The forward pass is worked in the same color as the return pass. To create a striped pattern, at the end of the forward pass, again move the color to be dropped off to the edge and bring the color to be added up from below. This locks the new color on top of the color being dropped, keeping the strand close to the edge.
A left edge color change creates a distinctive, tweedy, woven-like pattern on the right side. Turn the piece over and the distinctive stripes on the wrong side are a pleasing surprise, making the piece completely reversible.

Add a third color and change at each edge using the techniques just described. There is no need to keep track of which color to switch to next; there will only be one color waiting when you reach the edge. Managing the balls of yarn to avoid gnarly tangles is imperative. After a few passes, take a moment and untangle the balls. The right and wrong sides combine the best of both the right and left edge color changes.
When changing color within the work rather than at an edge, work the forward pass up to the point of the change and move the color to be dropped off to the left. Then, insert your hook behind the next vertical bar and pull up a loop with the new color, continuing across the forward pass. Work the return pass normally until there is one loop of the color to be dropped on the hook and the other loops are the new color. Then, move the color to be dropped to the right, bring the new color up from behind, and continue across the return pass.
The right side color transition will be distinct and without holes. The neatly interlocked loops will be noticeable on the wrong side.
All of the samples were worked using Tunisian simple stitch, but color changes can be worked using any stitch following the same techniques described here. Experiment with some different color changes, and color it your way when you make your next project.p

Standard yarn weight system
Standards and guidelines for crochet and knitting: categories of yarn, gauge ranges, and recommended needle and hook sizes
Basic crochet instructions
* These are guidelines only: They refl ect the most com-monly used gauges and needle or hook sizes for specifi c yarn categories.
** Lace weight yarns are usually knitted or crocheted on larger needles and hooks to create lacy, openwork patterns. Accordingly, a gauge range is diffi cult to deter-mine. Always follow the gauge stated in your pattern.
*** Steel crochet hooks are sized differently from regular hooks — the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is the reverse of regular hook sizing.

The BasicsPART 1
Holding your hook and yarn
To crochet successfully, it’s important that you hold the yarn and hook in a correct and comfortable manner. This will ensure that your tension is accurate throughout the project.
There are two main ways of holding the hook and yarn in crochet – you can choose whichever of these, or variations, that are natural for you.
HOLDING THE YARN
Option A: Forefi nger hold
Wrap the ball end of the yarn around the little fi nger of your other hand, passing it up between your middle and ring fi ngers to the front of your hand and over the other two fi ngers. Hold the work steady with your thumb and forefi nger, and use your middle fi nger to create tension.
Option B: Middle-fi nger hold
Wrap the ball end of the yarn around the little fi nger of your other hand, passing it up between your middle and ring fi ngers to the front of your hand and over the other two fi ngers. Hold the work steady with your thumb and middle fi nger, and use your forefi nger to create tension.
How to CROCHET:
Option A: Pencil grip
Hold the hook in your dominant hand as you would a pencil, approx 2" from the tip of the hook.
Option B: Knife grip
Hold the hook in your dominant hand as you would a knife, approx 2" from the tip of the hook.
GRIPPING THE HOOK

Letting the yarn slide through your fi ngers, especially over your little fi nger, will help to maintain an even tension.

PART 2
Getting started…
THE SLIP KNOT
MAKING A CHAIN
1 2 3Step 1: Make a loop in the yarn. Step 2: With your crochet hook,
catch the ball working end of the yarn and draw through loop.
Step 3: Pull fi rmly on yarn and hook to tighten knot and create fi rst loop.
Step 1: To make a chain, hold the tail end of the yarn and bring the yarn over the hook by passing the hook in front of the yarn, under and around it.
Step 2: Keeping the yarn taut, draw the hook and yarn through the loop on the hook. Pull it through.
Step 3: Ensuring the stitches are fairly loose, repeat to make the number of chains required.
To count the stitches, use the right side of the chain, or the one that has more visible and less twisted “V” shapes. Each “V” is one chain. Remember to count the slip knot as the fi rst stitch, but do not count the loop on the hook.
SLIP STITCH (SL ST)
Slip stitch is used to join one stitch to another or to join a stitch to another point. It’s usually made by picking up two strands of a stitch. Where sl st is used all over, you execute it in the same way, but only pick up the back loop.
Insert the hook into the back loop of the next stitch and pass yarn over hook, as in chain stitch. Then draw yarn through both loops on stitch and repeat to end.

PART 3
Main crochet stitches…
Step 1: Skip 2 ch and insert hook, front to back into next stitch, under top loop of next ch. Yarn over hook (yo).
Step 2: Pull loop through to front, two loops on hook.
Step 3: Yo.
Step 4: Draw through both loops to complete the single crochet.
Step 5: Work one sc into every ch to end. For next row, turn your work and chain 1, called a turning chain. Skip stitch at the base of the turning chain, then work a sc under both top loops of next st. When working any stitch in cro-chet, you must work through both loops of each stitch, unless the pattern calls for just working through either the front or back loop of next stitch. Work one sc into each stitch to end of row. Repeat this row for sc fabric (shown at right).

SINGLE CROCHET (SC): The most basic crochet stitch
DOUBLE CROCHET (DC): A taller crochet stitch
Step 1: Yo. Step 2: Insert hook in next stitch, from front to back. Yo and pull the loop through just the chain stitch.
Step 3: Three loops on hook.
Step 4: Yo and draw the loop through the fi rst two loops only.
Step 5: Two loops on hook.
Step 6: Yo. Step 7: Draw through remaining two loops to complete double crochet. Repeat this along the row for dc fabric (shown above).

PART 4
WORKING PATTERNS…
Turn a row
At the end of a row, when you turn the work to begin the next row, you need to complete a turning chain (t-ch) to get to the right height of the stitch you’re working, as demonstrated on the dc. This chain counts as the fi rst stitch in the row and each technique, depending on its height, uses a different number of chains at the start of the row.
sc = 1 t-ch hdc = 2 t-ch dc = 3 t-ch
Measuring gauge
Before starting on a project, it’s advisable that you do a gauge swatch to ensure that you’re crocheting at the right tension. This enables you to correct any deviances from the working pattern before you begin, ensuring your project is the correct size. The swatch should be just over 4"(10cm) square. If the tension is wrong, you must re-work the swatch with larger or smaller hooks until you obtain the correct gauge. Measure out 4"(10cm) along a row and place markers. Measure out 4"(10cm) down the rows and place markers. Use these two sets of markers to count how many stitches and rows there are to 4"(10cm), and compare to the pattern’s gauge swatch. You may wish to take a few measurements in this way to create an average. Before starting a project, do a tension swatch.
Steps 3 and 4: Yo, as for dc, but draw yarn through three remaining loops on hook together to complete half double.
HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (HDC): The second essential crochet stitch
Step 1: Yo, insert hook in next stitch, from front to back, and pull the loop through just the chain stitch.
Step 2: This creates three loops on the hook.
1 2
3 4Repeat the hdc along the row for hdc fabric (shown above).
