WORKS UPDATE: Our outdoor crew have put the new EWP to work with lots of tree pruning and de-nutting happening. There will be a short break in this program and we will resume once the school holidays are over.

The cleaning and storing of batteries for off-island disposal continues so we are well on schedule.

With lots of rain expected over the next few days, the crew on Home Island have prepared themselves to operate the pumps in the event of flooding. Halim (Pak Ainul) and Riadi (Nek Nazif) are very organised to take control of the situation if required.

These are a few items that I think may be of particular interest but we are always willing to meet with members of the community who are interested in knowing more about Shire activities.

Cocos Islands Golf Club News

From the Sunday Captain, Bill

The fourth Monthly Mug competition of the year was held on Sunday, with the Club President, Kelly Edwards winning with a fine score of net 62. Previously Rohan Dyall had dominated the first two comps of the year, before finding other things to do to give everyone a chance, with Ash James winning the March event and taking full advantage of the Mug over a six week break between comps. Thanks to all the volunteers doing work on and off the course, and frequently behind the scenes to keep the club running smoothly and efficiently.

From the Women’s Captain, Anna

Likewise Women’s Golf is being held on many of the non-competition Sundays. So far this year we have played Ambrose style golf a number of times, including a hugely popular Champagne Golf morning. Recently we held a coaching clinic with three of the more experienced golfers, Bill, Trevor and Ash assisting. Many of the participants then put their new skills into practice at a Foursome event with the Sunday afternoon golf group. In addition to the Sunday morning Women’s Golf there are plans to hold Women’s golf on a Wednesday afternoon in the lead up to Corporate Gold Day.

From the Scroungers Captain, Leah

Scroungers golf is off to a cracking start for 2019! Played EVERY Thursday, this unique afternoon of golfing fun is hugely popular with both locals and tourists alike. We had a ball on Valentines Day, raising money for the “Love Your Sister” cancer charity. We were nearly blown away during Cyclone Savannah ... and last week (thanks to a generous donation from VARA) all players went in the draw to win a return flight to Perth! Our upcoming calendar of events includes Coconut and Easter themed Scroungers with a few surprises in between! Come and join us each Thursday at 3.30pm! Bring cash for the cheap green fees, hire clubs, or perhaps to spend at the Donga Bar. All adults are welcome!

From the Committee

A very big thank you to our new Sponsor, Saltmakers Café. They generously sponsor every Scroungers event throughout the Tradewinds season with a free Kebab & Chips voucher and a free Pizza voucher for every Monthly Mug winner. Thanks Tony, we really appreciate your support.

Also thanks for the very generous donation of a return airfare from VARA, recently. It was an amazing, busy Scroungers followed by a delicious dinner provided by Neale. Congratulations to the winner of the flight (drawn in a raffle) Leah Stratford.

A welcome to existing members and new members, we have a busy calendar of events for 2019 and details will be emailed to members, or can be read on The Donga blackboard. Thanks to everyone who does their bit by helping out, it’s what makes our Club great!

See you at The Donga.

The SMS Emden in Pulu Keeling National Park In the lead up to Anzac Day, we would like to share with you some recent photos of the SMS Emden, as the engagement is often referred to in Anzac Day speeches. Pulu Keeling National Park contains many sites of social and historical significance, including the wreck of the World War I German raider SMS Emden, sunk by the HMAS Sydney in 1914, the first naval engagement for the Royal Australian Navy.

The Emden today lies about 100m from the shore in 3-9 metres of water at the southern end of Pulu Keeling. Two salvage operations in 1915 and in the late 1930s resulted in the loss of the superstructure, however the ship's propellers and shafts, port side gun and engine still remain (see photos above and below) plus the ship’s capstan and an anchor at the bow, spent and unspent shells and other small items of copper and brass.

To preserve the SMS Emden, is has been declared a historic shipwreck. The wreck of about 100m in length and the waters within a 500 metre radius are protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. Come in and visit us at the Parks office if you would like to know more about this special site.

Remains of the Emden gun port side mid ships Bekas senapan Emden sebelah kanan pertengahan kapal

Remains of the Emden propellers and hull (left); top of port engine (middle); propeller shaft starboard side (right) Bekas daripada propeller dan badan Emden (kiri); atas injin sebelah kanan (tengah); shaft propeller sebelah kiri (kanan)

When you are on South Island on a very high tide sometimes a flock of small noisy birds fly by. They are Ruddy Turnstones and to feed they flick over crusty bits of mud-flat looking for bugs. They are here every year around 40 in number. On arrival in November they look like a normal bird but by late April they are FAT, and in breeding plumage ready for the long flight back to the Russian Tundra which should be melting by now.

Pelanggaran jenayah terhadap mengiring-iring I

The other offence of stalking is where the offender does not intend to intimidate the person, but pursues them in a way that could reasonably be expected to intimidate them and in fact does intimidate them.

Ways to Go Green and Save

Save Energy to Save Money Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water. Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying Save water to save money. Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too. Install a low-flow showerhead. They don't cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.

Less gas = more money (and better health!). Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity. Eat Smart If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.

Borrow instead of buying. Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books. Buy Smart Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.

Make your own cleaning supplies. The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and soap. Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality.

Apa artinya “mengancham”?

In addition, there are other more specific defences for stalking, being that the alleged offender:

menpunyai kuasa sah untuk mengiring mangsa

tidak

did not know that the victim lived or worked or happened to be at the place the alleged offender is accused of watching or persistently being at, or

Quick Tips for Reading Nutrition Labels

Being your own health and label-reading detective adds another tool to help you take control of your own health and well-being. This can indicate whether you’re fuelling your body with enough of the nutrients it needs. 1. How many Servings is That? Serving size is the size or portion of the product that equates to the amount of nutrients l isted. All the information provided in the Nutrition Facts label is based upon the serving size listed. Serving per container is the total amount of servings per container. Portion size isn’t found on the Nutrition Facts label. It’s different for everyone based on their unique health goals and needs, like if they have a medical condition. Moreover, the recommended portion size for each person may not be the same as the serving size listed on the package, particularly if you’re managing a condition like diabetes. Let’s use a bag of pasta as an example. If the serving size says 1 cup of pasta, the nutrition information below the s e r v i n g s i z e ( f a t s , carbohydrates, protein, sugars, fiber) only apply to that 1 cup of pasta. 2. Look for Fibre Pay attention to the grams of fiber per serving on a Nutrition Facts Label. Aim for food that have higher fiber amount at least 5 grams per serving. Food that are high in fibre include broccoli, wholegrain bread and oats, berries, pears, melons. 3. Know your Sugars Total sugars are the total amount of sugars found in a produc t , bo th na tura l ly occurring (like sugars in fruit and milk) and added. Added sugars simply refer to the amount of sugar that’s been added during the processing of the food product. Added sugars can include maple syrup, concentrated vegetables or fruit juice and high-fructose corn syrup.
