The two windows either side of the main entrance represent the Apostles, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The windows were commissioned for the new church and designed by Ars Sacra in1966. Christian tradition has long connected the authors of the four Gospels, with the four "living creatures" that surround the throne of God, as is described in Revelation 4:7….. Many pictures of Matthew, Mark and Luke show them writing; with John portrayed looking straight ahead at the reader, holding his scroll. Mark and John are pictured as young men because they symbolise the divine immortal Christ; Matthew and Luke are generally older and bearded, because they represent Christ's mortal nature. The window second from the main door on the western side of the church represents ST. MATTHEW. Matthew is often shown writing his gospel. Matthew's symbol is an angel, because the first story he tells is about how an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. The window next to the main door on the western side of the church represents ST. MARK. Mark's symbol is the winged lion, because his Gospel begins with John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness. He explains the royal dignity of Christ and his version of the Gospel begins: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness,” suggesting the roar of the lion. The window next to the main door on the eastern side of the church represents ST. LUKE. Luke's symbol is shown with an ox, because his Gospel begins with Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, offering sacrifice in the temple at Jerusalem. Sometimes he is shown painting an icon of Mary and Jesus. The window second from the main door on the eastern side of the church represents ST. JOHN, John's symbol is called the rising eagle, since his gaze penetrates into the mysteries of Heaven. His symbol is an eagle, because his writing “soars” to the mystical heights of heavenly things, and doesn’t spend much time on the ground.

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. YEAR A 27th July , 2014

Dear friends in Jesus Christ, it’s very important for us to know, identify

and associate the symbols used in stained glass window. The two

windows either side of the main entrance represent the

Apostles, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The windows were commissioned for the new church and designed by

Ars Sacra in1966.

His symbol is an eagle, because his writing “soars” to the mystical heights of heavenly things, and doesn’t spend much

time on the ground.

AAA s part of St Nicholas of Myra Parish's 175th Anniversary, the parish will be putting together a

commemorative book to celebrate this Jubilee year.

The Jubilee book will not only commemorate the big events of this year, but also detail the vast history of the parish, feature messages from past and present priests, highlight some of the key people and organisations that make up the St Nicholas' community, and much more.

In order to undertake this project and ensure that we create the best book we can for this parish, we need your help! We would like parishioners to help contribute content for the book, such as: Stories about yourself, another parishioner, or a prominent organisation within the parish in the last 25 years;

Histories about the parish, such as the aspects of the parish buildings, works within the community, and contributions to the development of Penrith; Poems or other creative works by parishioners.

If you would like to contribute, make a suggestion, or volunteer someone else, please send us an email at [email protected]. Please email us only with your ideas, as we may not be able to accommodate all contributions.

Thank you all, and God Bless you in this Jubilee year!
