Overview, Target Audience and Learner OutcomeEliza Fernie was well cared for as a child in the Cardiology Department at Children’s Hospital Colorado in the early 1980s. As an adult pursuing her own career now, she and her family continue to be grateful for the care she received. Their aim is to give back by helping pediatric nurses and other members of the healthcare team continue to excel in the clinical setting.

The Eliza Fernie Pediatric Critical Care Symposium is designed to provide evidenced-based critical care updates for nurses, respiratory therapists and other team members. Attendees will be able to expand their own professional development and share knowledge and resources regarding neonatal, cardiac and pediatric critical care diagnoses, trends and innovations with their teams, patients and families.

The overarching conference theme this year is “do no harm.” On the face of it, this may seem an obvious and absolute obligation, a promise above all others we make in the provision of critical care. Over the two-day conference we will delve into human experience and systems issues that can impede our efforts to prevent harm. We will learn with compassion that all people are vulnerable to biases that can contribute to unintended outcomes. We will examine challenges faced in critical care in order to balance competing and sometimes contradictory aims. We will seek guidance from professional society consensus statements, as well as from the history of medicine and nursing, to inform professional practice. We will gain clarity from clinical expert and patient perspectives to re-energize how we think about our commitment to “do no harm” to the patients we serve.

Choose to attend the live conference at Children’s Hospital Colorado or at one of the video conference sites in Colorado (Colorado Springs, Grand Junction), Montana (Billings), New Mexico (Albuquerque and Farmington) or Wyoming (Cheyenne).

ObjectivesUpon conclusion of this symposium, participants should be able to:

• Explore human reasoning, its influence on diagnostic processes and the safety of working in multi-disciplinary diagnostic partnerships.

• Describe contributing factors of different aspects of bias that can impact patient care.

• Describe the role of sleep and self-regulation on neurodevelopment with attention to the competing aims of necessary care.

• Explore the challenges of managing children with a unique life-limiting disease that did not survive in the past, including local and global efforts to maximize the length and quality of life for individuals born with a single ventricle.

• Explain the new breakthroughs and challenges for ACHD care.

• Describe the teen patient’s perspective in a medical encounter.

• Examine current consensus guidelines focused on improving outcomes from pediatric cardiac arrest.

• Describe the risks and benefits of adding Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) in line with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

• Identify appropriate pediatric palliative care consults.

• Describe challenging cases in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit highlighting the importance of situational awareness, interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.

• Explain the importance of genetics in the care of children with cardiac disease.

• Describe historical events that can inform practice and navigation of competing aims in clinical care today.
