SCHOOL CALENDAR
PLEASE CHECK ON SKOOLBAG CALENDAR
Meetings are in the Staff/Community Centre unless indicated otherwise
Our planning for next year is well underway and teachers will soon begin
formulating 2020 classes. If your child is leaving the school (except for Year 6
students of course), have you let us know?
Many factors are taken into account when placing students in class groups for
the following year. If parents have a particular request, these should be made in
writing by email to [email protected] or by hard copy, and
addressed to the Principal (not your child’s teacher). They must be received by
Monday 4th November. These are then considered along with those of other
families, teachers and students.
As in previous years, please do not ask for specific teachers for 2020 as these
requests will not be considered. We also respectfully request that your requests
are reasonable; one or two requests per child are manageable as we try to juggle
competing and often conflicting priorities.
Due to the complex process involved, late requests cannot be accepted.
There was much excitement last
Thursday as Green Team held their first
‘pop up’ stall after school, selling the
produce grown in our vegetable
garden.
Thank you to all those families who
bought the produce, and to parent
Claire P and teachers Jayde Fielding and
Liv Mahon, who have worked with Green Team every week. And, of
course, we are very proud of the students in Green Team who planted,
grew, weeded, watered and sold their produce. Stay tuned for the next
stall.
During Term 4, we conduct a transition program, not only for our
incoming Prep students and exiting Year 6’s, but also for current Prep -
Year 5 students. In readiness for 2020, transition sessions are staggered
through to late December. Students visit the next year level and spend
time with a teacher currently working there, as well as acquaint
themselves with students from other classes. The transition program
culminates in students visiting their 2020 classroom.
At Laburnum, class placement for 2020 considers student, teacher and
parent input. If parents want to make requests, please see the
information below. Our teachers spend extensive time on class
placements and we will only do this once, so please note the closing date
for requests.

School Captain Report
Welcome to the last term of the year! The students (especially the Year 6s) and teachers are determined to make this
term count.
Lately, the JSC Reps have been selling bandanas during recess near the Year 1 line up area. All the money raised will be
donated to the Canteen Foundation which supports young people who are going through cancer or loved ones who are.
The Canteen bandana is a symbol of hope, resilience and connection. The cotton bandanas cost $5, the silk bandanas
cost $15 and the canteen pen costs $5. Bandana day will be held on Friday the 25th of October and we hope to see many
of the students wearing one.
On Tuesday the 15th of October, the Year 1s and 2s went to Mont de Lancy where they could experience what it was like
in the olden days. They had an educational experience and we couldn’t be happier to hear their wonderful and
interesting stories.
Just a reminder, that the Smile Squad is coming to our school frequently and will be checking up on students a few at a
time – so don’t forget to brush and floss!

Library News We have had a fantastic start to Library in Term 4.
It has been great to see the students who don’t have library sessions this term returning their books, borrowing new
books, reading and sharing our library with their families before school.
It is also wonderful to see students using our library at lunchtimes for reading, playing chess, creating, constructing and
drawing.
We have a new supply of board games which the students are welcome to use before school and at lunchtimes.
Our library is open every morning from 8.45 – 8.57 am so come in and say hello!
We are also open every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime from 1.25 pm- 1.50 pm.
Book Club
Laburnum participates in Scholastic Book Club which offers a selection of books across a wide range of reading levels
and interests, often at discounted prices. Book Club is also a fantastic fundraiser for our school as we receive a
percentage of each book sold.
Brochures for the current Book Club issue have been sent home this week and orders are due next Tuesday October 22.
Orders can be placed either online by visiting www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP or by completing the order form included in the brochure, and returning this with correct payment to your class teacher by next Tuesday.

Thank you
Thank you very much to the wonderful parent volunteers who have offered to assist with returning and shelving books,
and running our Book Club.
I would also like to thank the wonderful families who have donated preloved books to our library. We appreciate your
generosity.

Spanish News Hola a todos!
It has been a fantastic start to the term! Our Year 1 students have finished Spanish for the year, but it has been great to
see everyone at Spanish Club (Tuesdays 1.00-1.30pm) to say ‘Hola’ and continue with Spanish in a more informal
setting. However, it has been great having the Year 2 students return and of course, many of the Year 5 and 6 classes
who are returning back to Spanish!
This term, all of our year levels will be kept busy with units of work that are taught in a 1 or 2 week sequence. This is in
contrast with last term, where we focused on longer units of work for our older students. In experimenting with longer
units of work, the assessments (role plays, partner work, Kahoot testing) indicated that students were able to
confidently retain much of the vocabulary that they were taught throughout the term. ¡Buen trabajo! (Good job!)
That said, the approach I am taking with shorter units of work this term reflects not only the requirements of the
curriculum, but also the positive attitude that I am seeing in regards to learning Spanish this year. I believe that the
retention of vocabulary can be maintained (in shorter units of work) when students see Spanish in a positive light, as
something to practice with their friends in the classroom. I also encourage them to be the ‘experts’, who teach their
teachers or parents some every day vocabulary that can be used out of the Spanish room. Practice is key!
This change in approach also caters for those students who found it difficult to direct their own learning through good time management practices across a number of weeks and preferred to cover different content each week.
This term, the program aligns with what each year level is learning in Inquiry. As such, we will learning about:
All year levels- Buenos modales (Good manners)
Prep- Mi familia (My family)
Year 2- This year level will be completing content that was missed last term- Juguetes, literature and classroom conversations.
Year 3/4- Celebraciones y conmemoraciones (Celebrations and commemorations)
Year 5/6- Art Study, Los numeros y matematicas (numbers and maths) and money.
Hasta pronto,
Señora Mason

You must register online by the deadline. The system will then invite you to complete the grants process so that the Tel-

The more entries there are for our school, the greater the chance our name will be randomly chosen.
So, if you are a Telstra employee, please hop online as soon as possible and register.

OSHC program phone: 0413 227 071 Dear Parents, Please ensure your child brings a hat each time they attend OSHClub as we require all children to wear and hat and apply sunscreen on any days where the UV will exceed 3. Hats and Sunscreen- please ensure your child brings their hat! Just a reminder that as it is Term 4, it’s time to Slip, Slop, Slap! Please make sure your child brings a hat to the OSHClub program. OSHClub has a “No hat- No outside play” policy. OSHClub also provides sun cream. If your child is allergic to a particular type of sun cream, please inform the coordinator (Lynette) at the program. We also encourage you to read our sun smart policy, which states that a broad brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat and sunscreen must be worn when the UV index is above 3. Collection of Preps- process
We are now fostering a sense of responsibility for our preps as they travel to and from OSHClub. During term 4 (after school care), prep children will not be collected from their classrooms. Instead, they will come outside with their teacher, before walking to the hall (supervised by an educator), where they will be signed in. Preps that have attended a before school care session have had the option to walk to their classrooms independently since the beginning of term 3, which most choose to do. This forms a valuable part of their education here at OSHC- encouraging them to make choices for themselves.
Any new preps coming for the first time will still be collected and delivered directly to/ from their teacher until they are confident about where to go. If your prep is attending for the first time, we encourage you to visit the OSHC room prior to their first attendance. If you have any questions about this process, you are most welcome to drop into the OSHC room any morning after 9am for a chat. VAC photos- recap The Vacation Care program was absolutely amazing! Children went on excursions to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Bounce Trampolining, Wetlands Mini-golf, and GoClimb Coburg! We also had a FANTASTIC carnival day which saw 7 other schools come to Laburnum to participate in a variety of fun activities including a petting zoo, three jumping castles, and inflatable games and activities!
